The mace is Minecraft’s first weapon whose damage depends on how far you fall. In Java Edition 1.21, it has 5 base damage, can trigger a smash attack after a fall of more than 1.5 blocks, and can convert that fall into heavy impact damage while knocking nearby entities away.

What the mace does
The mace is a close-range weapon introduced in Minecraft: Java Edition 1.21. Its ordinary attack has 5 base damage. Its defining feature is the smash attack: if you fall more than 1.5 blocks before hitting an entity, the strike adds damage based on your fall distance, cancels the fall damage you had accumulated, resets your vertical momentum, and creates strong knockback around the impact point. The mechanics and base damage are documented in the official Java Edition 1.21 release notes.
That makes the mace a poor replacement for a sword when you are standing still, but an exceptional weapon when you can fight from ledges, towers, scaffolding, water-column launches, or repeated Wind Burst jumps. Your first decision is therefore not simply “which enchantment is strongest?” It is whether you want larger single impacts, better performance against armor, or a way to stay airborne for the next hit.

How to craft a mace
Recipe
The recipe uses exactly one Breeze Rod and one Heavy Core. Place the Breeze Rod in the slot directly above the Heavy Core in a crafting table, or select the mace recipe from the recipe book once both ingredients are available. The result is one mace.
Getting a Breeze Rod
Breeze Rods come from the Breeze, the hostile mob found in Trial Chamber encounters. Collect at least one for the recipe and keep extra rods if you intend to repair the weapon later: the official release notes specify that a mace can be repaired with Breeze Rods in an anvil.

Getting a Heavy Core
The Heavy Core is tied to Trial Chamber Vault progression. The official snapshot documentation describes its Trial Chamber acquisition path, but does not establish a universal drop rate or a guaranteed number of Cores per chamber. Treat it as a progression item from Vault content rather than a normal mob drop. The relevant snapshot is Minecraft: Java Edition Snapshot 24w11a.
Repairing the weapon
Use an anvil with Breeze Rods to restore mace durability. Mending and Unbreaking are the long-term durability choices: Mending converts earned experience into repairs, while Unbreaking gives the item more uses before durability is consumed. If you are planning repeated smash attacks, add one or both before taking the mace into a long Trial Chamber run.
How a smash attack works
Reach the trigger threshold
You must fall more than 1.5 blocks before the hit connects. A fall of exactly 1.5 blocks does not satisfy the stated trigger; the player must exceed it. Begin the attack while descending and hit the target before you land. Jumping in place and striking from the same height produces an ordinary mace attack.
What a successful hit changes
- The accumulated fall damage from that descent is negated.
- Your vertical momentum is reset at the moment of impact, so you do not continue carrying the same downward motion through the target.
- Additional damage is calculated from the distance fallen.
- Nearby entities are knocked back, not just the entity directly under your crosshair.
A missed smash is dangerous. If you fail to connect before landing, the mace does not cancel your fall; normal fall-damage rules apply. Practice over water, hay bales, or another safe landing area before attempting high drops over hostile mobs.

Java Edition 1.21 fall-damage schedule
The Java Edition 1.21 release assigns the following fall-damage component to a smash. These values are damage points, not a promise of final damage against every target: armor, mob properties, difficulty-related behavior, and other game rules can affect what the target actually loses.

This schedule comes from the Java Edition 1.21 release documentation. It is separate from the mace’s 5 base damage, so think of a hit as the normal weapon attack plus a fall-based component, subject to the target’s defenses.
Worked examples
- 2-block fall: the fall component is 8 damage (2 × 4), provided the hit qualifies as more than 1.5 blocks.
- 3-block fall: the fall component is 12 damage (3 × 4).
- 8-block fall: the fall component is 22 damage (3 × 4, then 5 × 2).
- 12-block fall: the fall component is 26 damage (12 from the first 3 blocks, 10 from the next 5, and 4 from the final 4 blocks).
These calculations describe the release schedule, not a recommendation to take the highest possible drop. A lower, controlled drop is easier to aim and lets you recover if the target moves.
Version differences you must account for
Mace numbers changed during development. Java snapshot 24w13a recorded a revised baseline of 3 damage per fallen block, while the final Java Edition 1.21 release documents the tiered 4/2/1 schedule above. Do not mix a snapshot value into a release-version guide. The change is recorded in the 24w13a snapshot notes.

Mace enchantments explained
Density: the fall-damage build
Density increases the damage a mace deals per block fallen during a smash attack. It is the direct choice for players who want the largest impact from a controlled drop. Because its value scales with fall distance, Density becomes more noticeable on medium and long drops than on a barely qualifying jump. Microsoft’s enchantment documentation describes Density as increasing “the damage dealt by maces per block fallen when performing smashing attacks.” See the official enchantment reference.

Use Density when your targets are exposed, you can reliably create vertical space, and your priority is killing a single enemy with one impact. It does not solve the main risks of the weapon: missing the target, having no safe landing route, or being unable to create another drop.
Breach: the armor-target build
Breach reduces the effectiveness of the target’s armor. The Java 1.21 release describes a 15% armor-effectiveness reduction per level and four levels, for a stated maximum of four levels. That makes Breach the specialist choice against heavily armored players or mobs whose protection would otherwise absorb much of the hit.

Choose it when the target’s armor is the limiting factor, especially in player-versus-player combat. Against an unarmored mob, the benefit is smaller than the direct fall scaling offered by Density.
Wind Burst: the aerial-combo build
Wind Burst launches the attacking player upward after a successful smash. The lift gives you another chance to reposition and line up a second impact instead of returning immediately to the ground. The official 1.21 release notes state that Wind Burst is found in Ominous Vaults; higher levels are made by combining copies in an anvil.
Wind Burst is the mobility choice. It does not replace Density or Breach’s specialized damage effects, but it can increase your practical damage over a sequence of successful attacks because it helps you stay in the air. The launch is only useful if you can keep a target in sight and control where you land.
Support and specialist enchantments
- Mending: repairs the mace with experience, making it suitable for sustained survival use.
- Unbreaking: extends the number of attacks before durability is consumed.
- Fire Aspect: adds a burning effect to targets that can be set on fire. It is utility damage, not a replacement for a fall-based build.
- Smite: specializes against undead mobs. Pick it for a dedicated undead-hunting mace.
- Bane of Arthropods: specializes against arthropod mobs and is similarly narrow.
- Curse of Vanishing: removes the item when you die. It offers no combat advantage and is normally undesirable on a valuable mace.
The official 1.21 enchantment rules do not allow Density, Breach, and Smite to be freely stacked. Compatibility can vary with edition and version, so check the enchantment table, anvil result, or current release notes instead of assuming every listed enchantment can occupy one weapon.

How to obtain Density, Breach, and Wind Burst
Wind Burst
Wind Burst’s documented source is an Ominous Vault. Once you obtain a Wind Burst book or mace, combine compatible copies in an anvil to reach higher levels, as described in the Java 1.21 release notes. Because the enchantment is tied to Ominous Vault progression, plan for Trial Chamber exploration rather than ordinary surface trading.
Density and Breach
The cited official release introduces Density and Breach and explains what they do, but it does not assign either enchantment a single, definitive structure or drop location in the same way it identifies Ominous Vaults for Wind Burst. Their acquisition route can therefore depend on the edition and version you are playing. Use the current enchantment and loot behavior in your client to determine whether a given book is available through your normal enchanting or loot options; do not assume that a Wind Burst source also supplies Density or Breach.
If you are planning a specific survival world, first confirm that the enchantment appears in that world’s available table or loot, then reserve an anvil and enough experience for combining books. This avoids spending resources on a compatibility path your edition does not permit.
Which mace build is best?
There is no universal best enchantment. Match the build to the problem you are trying to solve.

For most players, the practical choice is Density when you regularly create safe drops, Breach when armor is the threat, and Wind Burst when movement and chaining matter more than a single maximum hit. Add Mending and Unbreaking whenever the mace is part of your regular kit rather than a one-off experiment.

- Prepare a landing route. Clear the blocks below the target, identify where you will fall after the hit, and keep water, hay bales, ladders, or another recovery option nearby. A successful smash cancels the descent that led to the hit, but a miss does not.
- Create more than 1.5 blocks of vertical separation. Use a ledge, staircase, tower, scaffolding, or a controlled jump. Wind Charges can launch you upward and are specifically useful for setting up another attempt.
- Keep the target centered while descending. Start the swing early enough that the hit connects before your feet reach the ground. Waiting until the last instant makes a moving target more likely to escape the impact.
- Confirm the impact. A successful strike produces the smash behavior: the fall is canceled, the target takes fall-scaled damage, and nearby entities are knocked back. If you simply land and take fall damage, the attack did not qualify.
- Use the reset or Wind Burst launch. Without Wind Burst, retreat, climb, or find another height advantage. With Wind Burst, use the upward launch to turn away from the first target, reacquire it, and prepare the next descending hit.
- Repair before the next expedition. Anvil the mace with Breeze Rods, or let Mending restore it with experience. Do not wait until the weapon is nearly broken if you are relying on it as your only close-range option.
Common problems and fixes
“My attack did normal damage.”
Check the fall distance and timing. The player must fall more than 1.5 blocks, and the hit must land before you touch down. A jump that barely clears the threshold, a target that moves out of range, or a strike after landing produces no smash bonus.

“I took fall damage after missing.”
That is expected. Fall-damage negation is an effect of a successful smash, not a passive property of holding the mace. Practice from a lower platform and keep a safe landing block beneath you.

“The mace feels weak against a protected target.”
Armor can reduce the effective result. Consider Breach for armor-focused fights, and remember that the 15%-per-level figure is the Java 1.21 release description. Against ordinary unarmored mobs, Density may provide a more useful increase.
“Wind Burst did not launch me.”
Verify that the mace actually carries Wind Burst and that the hit was a successful smash. A normal ground attack, a missed strike, or an incompatible anvil combination will not produce the aerial reset you are expecting.
“The numbers do not match a video or guide.”
Check the edition and version first. The final Java 1.21 release uses the tiered 4/2/1 schedule, while snapshot 24w13a documented a 3-damage-per-fallen-block baseline. Bedrock and later updates may present different behavior or compatibility.
