An automatic chest sorter uses a line of hoppers, one filter cell per item, and a comparator-controlled redstone lock to route matching items into labeled chests. Build the input line above your output chests, tune each filter hopper with 41 units of its target item plus four distinct filler items, and finish with an overflow chest. The design works in both Java and Bedrock when you use an edition-appropriate layout, but sustained hopper speed can expose different failure modes in each edition.

What an automatic chest sorter does
A sorter turns one mixed stream of drops into separate storage. Items enter an input chest or hopper line and travel past a series of filter cells. Each cell is assigned to one item, such as cobblestone, wheat or iron ingots. When that item reaches its cell, the filter hopper inventory changes enough for its comparator to produce a redstone signal. That signal changes the lock state of the hopper below, allowing the matching item to fall into the cell’s output chest. Items that do not match continue along the transport line to the next filter.

Every hopper has two jobs in this system: it pulls items from a container above and pushes items into a container below. A redstone signal can lock a hopper, stopping its transfer. The official Minecraft explanation describes the basic behavior this way: a hopper normally sucks up items that fall on it from above and stores them in its five-slot inventory. Your redstone circuit exploits that inventory level as a control signal rather than treating the hopper as passive piping.
The last destination should be an unsorted, junk or overflow chest. Without that destination, a full output chest or an item with no filter can block the entire line and make the farm feeding it appear broken.

Plan the storage line before placing blocks
Choose categories and chest locations
List the items you expect to receive before you build. Give each category a labeled output chest, and leave physical space for additional cells if the list will grow. Put frequently collected materials closest to the input only if that arrangement helps you find them; the filter order does not change the basic sorting rule. Labels, signs or item frames make it possible to identify a chest after the room is full.
Estimate the iron requirement
Hoppers are the main material cost. Minecraft’s official recipe uses one chest and five iron ingots for one hopper. A cell normally needs a filter hopper and an output hopper, or a filter hopper feeding a chest through the chosen design. The transport line also consumes one hopper for each link. Count those pieces first, then gather the redstone parts and solid blocks for the frame. The exact number of repeaters and dust pieces depends on the schematic you select.

| Part | Where it is used | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Chests | Input, one output per sorted item, and overflow | Label outputs before connecting the line. |
| Hoppers | Horizontal transport, one filter hopper per cell, and output transfer where required | Each hopper costs five iron ingots plus one chest; the number grows with line length. |
| Comparators | Reads the filter hopper inventory | Use one for each filter cell in the standard arrangement. |
| Redstone torches and dust | Locks and unlocks the output path | Allow room behind or beside every cell for the circuit. |
| Repeaters | Only in designs that call for them | Do not add them arbitrarily; they change timing and footprint. |
| Solid blocks | Supports the hoppers and carries redstone | Use a consistent frame so a broken cell is easy to locate. |
| Four filler items per filter | Occupies the remaining filter-hopper slots | Use items that cannot be mistaken for anything you intend to sort. |
Build the sorter step by step
1. Place and label the output row
- Place one chest for every category you selected.
- Label each chest with its target item before hoppers obscure the front or top.
- Place a final unsorted or junk chest where every item that passes all filters can reach it.
Keep the overflow chest accessible. It is both a safety valve and the quickest way to see whether the incoming stream contains an unplanned item.

2. Build the input and transport line
- Place the input chest where your farm, mine or manual drop-off will feed it.
- Run a horizontal hopper line above the output row, pointing every hopper toward the next cell.
- Check each hopper’s output direction individually. A single reversed hopper can stop the stream even when the redstone is correct.
- Leave enough room below or beside the line for the filter hoppers, comparators and lock circuit.
The line is the highway for unmatched items. The filter cells divert only their own targets, so a continuous route from the input to the overflow chest is essential.
3. Build one filter cell
- Place a filter hopper connected to the transport line in the orientation required by your chosen design.
- Place an output hopper beneath it, or connect the filter cell directly to an output chest when the schematic supports that arrangement.
- Install a comparator reading the filter hopper’s inventory.
- Build the redstone torch, dust and supporting blocks that use the comparator signal to lock the lower hopper until a matching item arrives.
- Before copying the cell, confirm that the lower hopper is normally locked and that the comparator changes state when the filter hopper’s contents change.
Different compact schematics place the torch and dust on different sides, so follow a layout made for your edition. The functional requirements are the same: the comparator must read the filter hopper, and the signal must control the hopper that sends a match to the output.
4. Tune the filter hopper
- Open the filter hopper for the cell.
- Put 41 units of the target item in its first slot.
- Put one distinct filler item in each of the other four slots, for four filler items total.
- Make sure the fillers are not items you plan to sort in another cell and are not likely to enter the line accidentally.
- Close the hopper and watch the comparator. The configured inventory should hold the circuit in its normal filter state; a matching item entering the line should create the brief unlock that sends it downward.
The 41-item setting is not an arbitrary capacity choice. It establishes the inventory level at which the comparator circuit distinguishes the configured cell from a passing item. If a filler is removed, replaced by a sortable item or consumed by a design mistake, the signal threshold changes and the cell can capture the wrong material or stop capturing its target.

5. Repeat and connect the overflow
- Copy the cell for every additional category, keeping the transport line continuous between cells.
- Change only the target stack and keep four safe fillers in each new filter hopper.
- Connect the end of the line to the overflow chest.
- Open every output chest and verify that its hopper points into the chest rather than back into the line.
Do not omit the overflow because the current input happens to contain only known items. Farms change, players drop tools into collection systems, and a full output chest can temporarily turn a valid item into an obstruction.
How the hopper and comparator circuit works
Hoppers provide the movement
A hopper pulls from a container above and pushes into the container below or in the direction of its nozzle. In a sorter, the top line keeps unmatched items moving while a lower path waits for a signal. A hopper that receives a redstone signal is locked, so the circuit can hold the lower path closed until the correct inventory condition appears.
The filter inventory provides the threshold
The comparator measures the filter hopper’s fill level. Forty-one target items and four fillers create a stable baseline. When another copy of the target item reaches the filter hopper, the inventory level rises and the comparator output changes. The redstone circuit uses that change to unlock the output hopper briefly. The target item then leaves through the output path, returning the filter hopper to its baseline. Non-target items do not create the same configured condition and continue along the transport line.

Why fillers must be controlled
The four filler slots prevent the target stack from moving through the hopper and keep the comparator at a predictable level. Use clearly recognizable filler items and store replacements nearby. If a filler can enter the transport stream, it may be diverted into the cell, alter the signal or be mistaken for a legitimate category. A small chest labeled filter spares beside the maintenance access is useful in a large installation.

The Minecraft Wiki’s technical tutorial documents a basic hopper-sorter transfer rate of about 2.5 items per second and notes an eight-game-tick hopper collection cooldown. Treat that figure as the behavior of the basic design, not a promise that every layout or input method will move an unlimited stream. The number of cells, hopper timing, container fullness and the way items enter the line all affect what you observe.
| Edition or situation | What to expect | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition 1.18 and later | Some filter variants can experience redstone-torch flicker burnout when exposed to a steady stream around the basic 2.5-item-per-second rate. | Use an overflow chest, watch the circuit during the first sustained run, and choose a variant that avoids a torch being toggled continuously. |
| Bedrock Edition | A full-speed hopper pipe can push a small percentage of items past filters. | Slow the input, add a buffer, and test the exact design with a mixed stream before attaching a farm. |
| Both editions | The tileable concept is suitable for both editions when the schematic matches the edition, but timing and redstone behavior are not interchangeable assumptions. | Build one cell first, test it in the target edition and version, then extend the line. |
Buffering a fast source
If a farm produces items faster than the line can accept them, feed the sorter through a buffer chest or a deliberately slowed input rather than dropping a burst directly onto the first filter. A buffer absorbs short surges and gives the hopper line time to collect items. Water-stream inputs can also reduce direct hopper pressure in designs that support them, but they add construction complexity and can introduce their own timing and lag considerations.

Test before connecting a farm
A controlled test catches orientation and timing errors while the machine is still easy to reach. Perform it with the real input route enabled but no valuable bulk supply attached.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Drop one target item into the input chest. Confirm that it reaches only the matching output chest.
- Drop one non-target item into the same input. Confirm that it passes the first filter and reaches a later matching cell or the overflow chest.
- Send a mixed stack containing the target and at least one non-target item. Watch whether the target diverts while the other item continues.
- Fill the target output chest until it is near full, then send another target. Verify that the system has a safe destination rather than blocking the transport line.
- Run the line at the rate your farm will actually produce. In Bedrock, specifically look for items appearing in overflow despite having a matching filter; in Java 1.18 or later, watch for a torch flickering repeatedly.
- Let the system run long enough to reveal a missing filler, a reversed hopper or a slow accumulation at a junction.
Only after these checks pass should you connect a farm, quarry or large manual unloading station. Keep the overflow chest visible during the first long run so a failure is obvious.
Choosing a layout
| Layout choice | Strength | Trade-off | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact one-wide tileable cells | Saves floor space and can be extended one category at a time. | Maintenance access is tighter, and an edition-specific redstone detail matters. | Long storage walls where space is limited. |
| Buffered hopper input | Absorbs bursts and reduces pressure on the first filter. | Uses an extra container and does not remove the line’s underlying throughput limit. | Farms with uneven output or short high-volume bursts. |
| Water-stream-assisted input | Can reduce the number of hoppers handling the incoming movement. | Adds water-channel construction, timing considerations and potentially more lag or complexity. | Large systems where hopper count or direct input pressure is a concern. |
Non-stackable items
The standard 41-item filter assumes a target that can occupy a normal stack. Non-stackable items do not fit that assumption cleanly, so do not copy the standard cell and expect reliable results. Use a design explicitly intended for the item type, or route non-stackables to a separate tested line. The safe rule is to test the exact item, edition and input rate rather than treating a stackable-item filter as universal.
Troubleshoot a sorter that misbehaves
Nothing reaches an output chest
- Check that the input hopper line points toward the cells and that the final hopper points into the overflow chest.
- Confirm that the comparator is reading the filter hopper, not an adjacent block or container.
- Inspect the lower hopper’s lock circuit. It should be locked in the idle state and unlock when the filter inventory changes.
- Open the filter hopper and restore 41 target items plus four fillers if the configuration was disturbed.
Items pass the correct filter
- On Bedrock, reduce the input speed or add a buffer; a full-speed hopper pipe can let a small percentage pass by.
- Check for a reversed hopper or a gap that lets an item skip the filter cell.
- Run a single-item test. If one target works but a sustained stream fails, the problem is timing or throughput rather than the category assignment.
The wrong item is captured
- Inspect the four filler slots. A filler that entered the system as ordinary cargo may be treated as a sortable item.
- Restore the exact target stack and distinct fillers, then test with one target and one non-target item.
- Make sure two cells were not accidentally configured with the same target.
The overflow chest fills unexpectedly
- Look for categories you never added to the filter list.
- Check whether an output chest is full and backing items up into the line.
- Observe the system at its real production rate. Bedrock pass-through and a timing mismatch can appear only during sustained input.
A redstone torch flickers or stops
In Java 1.18 and later, some variants can flicker-burn out when a steady stream repeatedly toggles the torch. Stop the input, replace the failed torch if needed, and use a circuit variant that does not expose the torch to that continuous pattern. Keep the overflow connected so a temporary circuit failure does not jam the entire storage line.
Maintenance checklist
- Keep every output chest labeled and the overflow chest accessible.
- Inspect filter hoppers after moving or upgrading the system; each standard cell needs 41 target units and four fillers.
- Replace any filler that was consumed, renamed or accidentally sorted.
- Check hopper directions after extending the line.
- Watch a sustained run after changing the input rate, adding cells or updating the game edition or version.
- Empty full output and overflow chests before they block collection.
- Keep spare torches, comparators, hoppers and filler items near the maintenance side of the build.
When this design is the right choice
Use an automatic chest sorter when you have a predictable set of stackable categories and want hands-off storage from a farm or shared input chest. Its modular cells make expansion straightforward: add a labeled chest, a filter hopper with the correct contents, the comparator lock circuit and the required transport connection. Choose a buffered or water-assisted input when the source produces bursts that approach the hopper line’s practical limit.
Do not treat the sorter as a set-and-forget machine. The basic rate is about 2.5 items per second, hoppers observe an eight-game-tick collection cooldown, Bedrock can pass a small percentage at full speed, and some Java 1.18-plus torch variants can burn out under a steady stream. A visible overflow destination and a test at the real input rate are what turn a compact redstone build into dependable storage.
