What a Minecraft desert temple is
A desert temple is a naturally generated sandstone structure found in a desert biome. Its pyramid silhouette, orange terracotta accents and blue-terracotta floor pattern make it distinctive when the building is exposed. Wind-blown or newly generated sand can cover part of the structure, so you may see only the upper pyramid, a few sandstone walls or the blue center before recognizing it.

The structure is also called a desert pyramid in Java Edition terminology. The names refer to the same ruin; the important practical differences are the locate command, generation frequency and edition-specific loot data.
How to recognize one when it is buried
- Look for a large, symmetrical sandstone pyramid rather than a naturally shaped hill.
- Orange terracotta stripes and a blue-terracotta design usually remain visible even when ordinary sand covers the lower walls.
- Clear sand cautiously around a suspected structure. Removing a little from the outside exposes the four-point pyramid shape without opening the trapped chamber.
- Do not assume every sandstone building is a temple. The central patterned floor and blue-terracotta marker identify the treasure shaft.
Temples can be exposed, partly buried or almost completely covered. There is no reliable surface depth at which every temple appears, so scanning the desert floor and checking suspicious sandstone shapes is more dependable than looking for a fixed height.

How to find a desert temple
Searching without commands
- Enter a desert biome and travel across broad, open areas where a pyramid is easier to see.
- Raise your view while moving and inspect the horizon for sandstone, orange terracotta or a geometric roof.
- When you see a possible structure, remove only enough surface sand to confirm the pyramid outline and the patterned center.
- Mark the route or record coordinates before entering. A buried temple can be difficult to relocate after you leave.
- Approach from an exterior wall or the upper side of the pyramid; do not dig straight down through the blue center.
Java temples generate less frequently than Bedrock temples according to the current structure reference, so a long Java search is not proof that your world failed to generate one. Terrain, biome size and burial can also hide a temple from a quick pass.
Locate commands with cheats enabled
Commands require cheats to be enabled in the world. Use the syntax for the edition you are actually playing:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Edition | Command | What it identifies |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | /locate structure desert_pyramid |
The nearest desert pyramid structure. |
| Bedrock Edition | /locate structure temple |
The nearest temple-type structure; Bedrock does not distinguish every temple variant in this command result. |
Run the command in chat and use the coordinates returned by the game to travel to the structure. If the command is rejected, check that cheats are enabled, that you included structure, and that you used the identifier for your edition. Java’s desert_pyramid identifier will not substitute for Bedrock’s temple identifier.
Why command results and searches differ by edition
Java and Bedrock do not use identical structure data. The reference material records less frequent temple generation in Java and more frequent generation in Bedrock, while burial and visibility still depend on local terrain. Chest contents and suspicious-sand rewards also vary by edition and game version. Treat a command as a location aid, not as a guarantee that two editions will present an identical building or identical loot.
Understand the temple before entering
The patterned floor and treasure shaft
The main floor uses a sandstone-and-terracotta pattern. The blue-terracotta design at the center marks a vertical shaft. Beneath that floor is a hidden chamber with four chests arranged around the bottom. Mojang’s official support description states: “These temples have a hidden room below the center of the floor with four chests inside.”

That center is both the shortest route and the dangerous route. A player who falls directly down the shaft lands on a stone pressure plate. The plate is not decorative: it is the trigger for the temple’s TNT mechanism.
The TNT trap
Under the pressure plate is a 3×3 layer of nine TNT blocks. Stepping on the plate ignites the TNT. The resulting blast can kill an unprepared player, destroy the chests and erase their contents before they can be collected. Because the explosion affects the chamber itself, breaking a chest after the trap has fired cannot recover items that were destroyed.
Safe route: disarm the trap before opening any chest
Use this sequence every time, including in a familiar world. The pressure plate is the only trigger you need to avoid; the four chests can wait until it is removed.
- Do not drop through the blue center. Keep the patterned block intact while you choose a side route.
- Enter beside the shaft. From the floor, mine a block orthogonally or diagonally adjacent to the central opening and descend through that new opening. You can also approach the chamber from the side or top by mining around the shaft rather than through its center.
- Reach the chamber without touching the plate. Keep your crosshair and movement away from the center tile as you descend. If you opened a side block, step onto the chamber floor beside the plate.
- Mine the pressure plate first. Break the stone pressure plate before interacting with a chest. Once it is gone, it cannot activate the TNT.
- Decide what to do with the TNT. You can mine the nine blocks for later use after the trigger has been removed. Leave them in place if you want to preserve the original structure; they are no longer armed by a pressure plate that has been broken.
- Open all four chests. With the plate removed, collect the randomized contents without the temple’s built-in trigger.
The critical detail is the order: side entry, plate removal, then chests. Opening a chest before removing the plate does not itself trigger the explosion, but it leaves the mechanism active while you move around the chamber.
If the TNT has already detonated
A fired trap may destroy some or all of the chamber, chests and their contents. Search the crater for surviving blocks and items, but do not expect the original loot to remain. If the player died, return using the marked coordinates as quickly as practical; dropped items can disappear after the normal item-despawn period. A second temple in the same world is a new structure with its own randomized loot, not a way to restore the first chamber.

What loot desert-temple chests contain
Chest contents are randomized and depend on the Minecraft edition and target version. Documented categories include diamonds, emeralds, gold, iron, enchanted books, gunpowder and other supplies. The table below describes categories rather than promising a fixed item count or a guaranteed rare drop.
| Loot category | What to expect | Version qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ores and valuables | Diamonds, emeralds, gold and iron can appear. | Presence and quantity are randomized; no chest guarantees a diamond. |
| Enchanted books | Useful enchantments may appear as randomized book entries. | Exact enchantments and availability depend on edition and version. |
| Exploration supplies | Gunpowder and other ordinary supplies are documented entries. | Rolls are randomized and can differ between loot-table revisions. |
| Horse equipment | Horse-armor and saddle entries have existed in temple loot tables. | These entries changed across releases; check the target Java or Bedrock version before treating them as guaranteed categories. |
| Newer structure items | The Dune Armor Trim was added to the structure’s documented loot data. | Availability follows the release that added it and is not identical across all older versions. |
Do not use a generic loot list to predict a particular seed. The same temple can produce a different set of items on another world, and Java and Bedrock maintain separate loot data. If you are writing a seed guide or planning a speedrun route, state the exact edition and version alongside any claimed item list.
Can a desert temple contain diamonds?
Yes. Diamonds are a documented possible chest category, so a temple can provide diamonds without mining diamond ore. They are not guaranteed: each chest rolls randomized loot, and the number of diamonds, if any, varies by loot table and generation. The safe procedure matters more than the potential value because detonating the trap can destroy every chest at once.
Archaeology cellar and suspicious sand
Recent desert-temple structures can include a cellar or basement area with suspicious sand. This is separate from the four trapped chests. A temple may have no cellar, so do not assume that every pyramid contains an archaeology room.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Clear ordinary sand around the basement carefully so you can see the suspicious blocks.
- Equip a brush and use it on each suspicious-sand block rather than breaking the block.
- Keep the suspicious sand supported. If it falls, the archaeology reward is lost.
- Collect the revealed item before moving to the next block, and avoid using a tool or action that destroys the suspicious block.
Breaking suspicious sand or allowing it to fall destroys its reward. The brush is therefore essential for archaeology, even though it is not needed to open the four regular chests.

Current suspicious-sand outcomes
The current structured loot data lists eight equally weighted outcomes. Each listed result has a 12.5% chance in that data set:
| Possible reward | Listed weight |
|---|---|
| Diamond | 12.5% |
| Emerald | 12.5% |
| TNT | 12.5% |
| Gunpowder | 12.5% |
| Archer pottery sherd | 12.5% |
| Miner pottery sherd | 12.5% |
| Prize pottery sherd | 12.5% |
| Skull pottery sherd | 12.5% |
Those percentages describe the cited current data, not every historical release. Older versions can use different archaeology tables, and Bedrock and Java should be checked separately when the exact reward matters.

Java Edition versus Bedrock Edition
Use the following comparison when deciding how to search, which command to type and how much confidence to place in a loot list.
| Practical question | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Locate command | /locate structure desert_pyramid |
/locate structure temple |
| Command naming | Uses the desert-pyramid structure identifier. | Returns the nearest temple-type structure and does not distinguish all temple variants. |
| Generation frequency | Temples generate less frequently than in Bedrock according to the current structure reference. | Temples generate more frequently than in Java according to the same comparison. |
| Burial and visibility | Can be exposed or covered by local desert terrain; no single burial depth applies. | Can likewise be exposed or buried; visibility varies with terrain and generation. |
| Chest loot | Use the Java loot table for the exact target version. | Use the Bedrock loot table for the exact target version; it is not automatically identical to Java. |
| Suspicious-sand loot | Recent versions can include cellar archaeology; outcomes follow the Java data for that release. | Recent versions can include cellar archaeology; outcomes follow the Bedrock data for that release. |
Edition differences explain why a tutorial filmed in one version may show a different command, chest item or cellar result from your world. Copy the command exactly, then label any loot claim with edition and version.

Troubleshooting common problems
The locate command gives an error
First confirm the edition. Replace Java’s desert_pyramid with Bedrock’s temple only when you are actually on Bedrock. Then verify that cheats are enabled and that the command begins with /locate structure. A command copied from an older tutorial may use syntax that your current release no longer accepts.
The coordinates lead to sand with no visible temple
The destination can be buried. Search below and around the reported location for sandstone, orange terracotta and the patterned center. Remove surface sand gradually rather than digging a vertical shaft through the center, because the treasure room remains trapped even when the exterior is hidden.
The temple has no archaeology room
Cellars are a feature of recent temple generation, not a guarantee for every structure or every version. If the four-chest chamber is present but no suspicious sand appears, the temple may simply lack a cellar or may have been generated under an older structure rule.
I brushed suspicious sand but received nothing
Check whether the block was actually suspicious sand and whether it remained supported. Breaking it, using the wrong tool or allowing it to fall destroys the archaeology reward. Clear surrounding ordinary sand first so the suspicious block is not accidentally dropped while you work.
I cannot find the pressure plate
Look directly below the blue-terracotta center. The plate sits at the bottom of the shaft above the 3×3 TNT layer. If you entered from a side opening, keep to the chamber edge and inspect the center tile before moving across the floor.
A safe, repeatable temple workflow
- Confirm the edition and, if applicable, the exact game version.
- Find a desert temple by exploration or run the edition-correct locate command with cheats enabled.
- Mark the exterior coordinates and expose the pyramid from the side if sand covers it.
- Open an orthogonally or diagonally adjacent block to bypass the central shaft.
- Reach the bottom, mine the pressure plate and decide whether to collect the TNT.
- Open the four chests and sort the randomized loot.
- Search for a cellar only after the trapped chamber is safe; brush suspicious sand while keeping it supported.
- Record any version-specific items or unusual finds before leaving, especially if you are documenting a seed.
Following that order separates the temple’s two rewards: the conventional chest haul and the optional archaeology cellar. The central design is a warning as much as a signpost—use it to locate the chamber, then approach it from the side so the TNT never gets the first move.
