GOG is the clearest choice if your priority is a store-wide DRM-free policy and standalone installers you can keep. Its official policy requires games released on the platform to avoid DRM, and supported offline single-player play should work without the Galaxy client, account authentication, or an internet connection. Online multiplayer and services that inherently need a server remain exceptions.
itch.io is the best complement for indie and creator-distributed games, but it requires more checking. itch.io delivers files uploaded by creators and says it does not add DRM or alter those files; however, creators are encouraged—not required—to provide DRM-free builds. For either store, download the files you are entitled to retain, record the edition and requirements, and test a clean reinstall. A library listing is an account entitlement, not automatically a local archive.

What “DRM-free” means for a PC game
Digital rights management (DRM) is a technical or service-based restriction that controls when and how software can run. It may require a client, periodic authentication, a publisher account, a hardware check, or an online service. A game can be sold through a storefront and still use one or more of those systems.
A DRM-free release normally means the supplied game files do not require an external copy-protection check to launch. That does not mean you own the copyright, that a publisher must provide future updates, or that every feature works offline. You receive a license or library entitlement under the store’s terms, plus whatever installation files are made available to you. Keeping a local installer gives you practical control over reinstalling that edition; it does not change the legal nature of the license.

Why GOG is the strongest default for an offline library
A published store-wide requirement
GOG’s developer policy requires games released on the platform to be DRM-free. The company states that single-player functionality designed to work offline should remain usable without Galaxy authentication, without the Galaxy client, and without an active internet connection. This is a platform rule rather than a promise attached only to selected titles, which makes the store easier to evaluate than one where DRM status must be inferred game by game.
GOG has described the policy as part of its preservation mission. In a 2022 company statement, it wrote: “Making sure you can play games purchased on GOG offline, make backup copies, and install them as many times as you need is even more relevant now, as things like game preservation become an important topic for the whole industry.” That is a company commitment, not a guarantee that every future service, update, or online mode will remain available.
Offline backup installers
From your GOG account, you can obtain offline backup installers for supported games. These are intended to be saved and reused without relying on the Galaxy client for installation. Galaxy remains optional for supported offline play; it can still be useful for automatic updates, cloud saves, social features, or convenience, but it is not the required path for the standalone installer.

- A multiplayer mode that contacts a server cannot be made independent of that server merely by removing DRM.
- Leaderboards, matchmaking, cloud saves, achievements, and other account services may stop working when offline.
- An installer can support only the operating systems and hardware listed for that edition.
- A later patch may change files or requirements. Keep the installer, patches, language files, DLC, and extras that matter to you.
How itch.io differs
Creator-controlled files
itch.io is a distribution platform where creators upload the files for their projects. itch.io says it does not alter those files or apply DRM, and a purchase gives you a download page for the files made available by the creator. This direct model is valuable for independent games, prototypes, tools, and small releases that may not appear in larger storefront catalogs.

Why every title needs an individual check
itch.io’s quality guidance encourages creators to upload DRM-free builds but does not require them to do so. A project may therefore be delivered as a genuinely standalone executable, as an archive with no installer, or as a build that still depends on a creator’s launcher, account, or online service. The platform’s own no-DRM handling does not prove that every uploaded game is independently launchable.
Project availability is also controlled by the creator. A purchase page can show updated or changed files, and creators can change project visibility or access. If future reinstallability matters, download the current files while you can and retain them locally instead of treating the purchase page as your only backup.
The itch app is not proof of DRM-free status
The itch app can remember an account and operate offline in some circumstances, which is convenient for managing downloads. That behavior does not establish that a particular game build is DRM-free or that it will launch without the app. Test the downloaded files directly and read the project’s requirements.
What to check before buying any game
Use the exact game listing, not a general assumption about the store, to make this decision. Work through these checks before payment:

- Identify the edition. Note whether the listing is a standard release, bundle, remaster, demo, soundtrack package, or another edition. DRM and file coverage can differ between editions.
- Confirm operating-system support. Check the listed Windows, macOS, or Linux support and any architecture, graphics, controller, or runtime requirements. A DRM-free installer cannot overcome an unsupported operating system.
- Read the download description. Determine whether you will receive an installer, a compressed archive, or several platform-specific files. Record the file names and approximate sizes.
- Check the update state. Look for the latest patch information and whether older builds remain available. If a particular version matters for compatibility or mods, preserve it after downloading.
- List included content. Verify DLC, language packs, manuals, soundtracks, artwork, and other extras separately. Do not assume that a “complete” label includes every file you want.
- Find online dependencies. Look for multiplayer servers, publisher accounts, third-party launchers, cloud saves, anti-cheat, or other services. Separate what is needed to start the game from what is needed only for optional features.
- Plan the archive. Decide where the installer, patches, extras, and notes will live before you buy. An external hard drive is an optional practical choice for a large collection; no particular capacity or model is required.
Downloading and preserving a GOG purchase
Use the account’s offline installer option
- Sign in to your GOG account in a web browser.
- Open your library and select the game and edition you purchased.
- Choose the option for offline backup installers rather than relying only on the Galaxy installation flow.
- Download every installer or archive for the operating system you use. Add separate language packs, patches, DLC, and bonus files when they are listed.
- Save the files in a folder named with the game, edition, platform, and download date. Keep the original filenames so that later updates are easier to identify.
- Copy the folder to a second storage location if the collection matters. A second local copy protects against a single drive failure; it is not a requirement imposed by GOG.
- Run the installer once on the intended computer, then disconnect from the internet and launch the game. Record any feature that still requires an online service.
Keep useful installation notes
Alongside the files, save a short text document containing the edition, supported operating system, patch level, required runtimes, controller notes, and whether the game uses a separate launcher. If you later replace a computer, these notes are often more useful than a remembered store-page description.
Downloading and preserving an itch.io purchase
Start with the purchase download page
- Sign in to the account used for the purchase and open the game’s purchase or download page.
- Read the creator’s instructions and download every file that corresponds to your operating system.
- Keep the original archive or installer before extracting it. If the creator supplies multiple builds, label each one with its version or date.
- Save documentation, patches, DLC, source or bonus files, and any README files included with the project.
- Extract a working copy into a separate folder. Leave the original archive untouched as your preservation copy.
- Launch the working copy without the itch app if the creator’s instructions indicate that direct launching is supported.
- Disconnect from the internet and test the offline functions you care about. Note any account, launcher, or server requirement.
- Back up the preserved files to another storage location. Because creators control project visibility and file access, do not depend on being able to redownload an unchanged build later.
When a creator updates the project
An updated purchase page may replace, add, or remove files. Keep the previous archive if you need to reproduce an older installation, use a particular mod, or maintain a known-compatible build. Treat each version as a separate preservation item rather than overwriting the only copy.
Building a reinstallable game archive
Use a simple folder structure
A consistent structure reduces mistakes when a drive fills or a computer is replaced. For example, organize by store, game, edition, platform, and version, then keep installers, patches, extras, and notes in separate subfolders. The exact naming scheme is up to you; the important part is that another person—or you several years later—can identify what each file does.

Preserve more than the main executable
- Base installers or original archives.
- Standalone patches and language files.
- DLC installers or activation instructions, if supplied.
- Manuals, readme files, artwork, soundtracks, and configuration notes you want to retain.
- System requirements and the date you downloaded each version.
Use storage appropriate to the collection
An external hard drive is a reasonable optional medium for large installer libraries. A portable SSD is another compact category, while writable optical discs suit only a narrow archival workflow. The available material does not establish a required capacity, speed, or model; choose based on your library size and whether you maintain a second copy. Whatever medium you use, periodically connect it and check that files can still be read.

Reinstalling after a computer change
- Identify the correct platform and edition from your archive notes.
- Copy the installer or original archive to the new computer without modifying the preserved copy.
- Install any required runtime, graphics component, or operating-system compatibility setting documented by the game.
- Apply patches in the order supplied by the creator or publisher. Keep each patch with the version it targets.
- Install DLC, language packs, and extras that belong to that edition.
- Launch once online only if the game’s instructions require account or service setup. Then disconnect and test the offline single-player path.
- Reconnect only for features that inherently need a server, such as multiplayer or cloud synchronization.
If the installer fails, compare the operating system and architecture with the original requirements before assuming a DRM problem. If the game launches but a feature is unavailable, determine whether that feature depended on a server or account rather than on the local files.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
“DRM-free” mistaken for “everything works offline”
Removing copy protection does not recreate a closed multiplayer service, restore a publisher’s login server, or provide cloud saves without connectivity. Evaluate offline single-player and online features separately.
Relying on a client as the only copy
A client-managed library can be convenient, but it is not the same as retaining installers. Download the standalone files where the store provides them and keep them outside the client’s default cache.

Ignoring changed or withdrawn downloads
Purchase access can reflect later file changes, and creator-controlled projects can change visibility. Preserve the version you downloaded, including supporting files, if you want to reinstall that exact build.
Forgetting edition and language differences
An installer for one operating system or language is not automatically a complete archive of every edition. Record what you downloaded and obtain the additional files before you need them.
Which store should you choose?
Choose GOG when
- You want a documented store-wide DRM-free requirement.
- You value browser-accessible offline backup installers.
- Your main use is offline single-player play and long-term reinstallability.
- You prefer a clear distinction between optional client features and standalone installation.
Choose itch.io when
- You primarily buy indie, experimental, or creator-distributed games.
- You are comfortable checking each project’s files and requirements.
- You will preserve downloads yourself because project files and visibility are creator-controlled.
- You want direct access to archives, executables, documentation, or bonus files supplied by the creator.
Use title-by-title verification elsewhere
For a storefront without a comparable published guarantee, do not infer DRM status from the store’s size, client design, or a community comment. Confirm the exact edition’s launch requirements and whether you can retain and reuse an installer. If the publisher’s documentation is unclear, treat the game as requiring further verification before purchase.
