What a fletching table is for
The fletching table is a job-site block for the fletcher profession. Place an unclaimed table where an unemployed villager can reach it, and that villager can switch to fletcher. Villages can also generate fletching tables naturally in fletcher houses.
Mojang’s release description summarizes the role plainly: villagers use the block as a work site. The table itself does not provide a normal player menu for making arrows, bows, crossbows or tipped arrows. Its practical value comes from the villager trades it enables.

Fletching table recipe and crafting layout
The recipe uses any accepted wood-plank types and two flint. Mojang describes it as “Crafted with four planks and two flint.” Arrange the ingredients in a crafting table as follows:

In the normal three-by-three grid, put the two flint in the first two slots of the upper row. Fill the first two slots of each of the next two rows with planks, leaving the entire right-hand column empty. The wood species can be mixed when the current recipe accepts any planks; the finished block has the same workstation function.

How to turn a villager into a fletcher
The table only assigns the profession when a villager can claim it as a job site. Use this sequence when setting up a trading room or a village workstation:

- Put the table in the area where the villager will live and work.
- Use an unemployed villager as the candidate. The villager must be able to acquire the unclaimed job site.
- Watch for the profession to change to fletcher before spending resources on trades.
- Trade with the fletcher to advance it through novice, apprentice, journeyman, expert and master offers.
- Keep the table accessible after assigning the profession. Villagers can restock up to twice per day when they can work at their station.
If the block is already claimed by another villager, a second villager cannot use that same table as an unclaimed site. A practical setup therefore gives the intended villager a clearly available table and leaves it in a position where the villager can work at it.
What the block does—and what it does not do
No player crafting screen
In normal play, right-clicking the fletching table does not open a crafting screen. It does not directly convert materials into arrows, bows, crossbows or tipped arrows. Those items come from the fletcher’s trading interface instead.
Villager employment
The employment function is the central mechanic: an unemployed villager can claim the table and become a fletcher. Once employed, the villager offers the profession’s archery-related trades and uses the station when restocking.

Secondary block mechanics
- Furnace fuel: the cited mechanics table gives one fletching table a fuel value of 1.5 smelted items. This is a small, niche use rather than the reason to build the block.
- Note blocks: placing a fletching table underneath a note block produces a bass sound.
- Storage and availability: the reference lists the block as renewable and stackable to 64. The way these properties are presented can vary by edition and version, so treat them as implementation details rather than the block’s main gameplay purpose.
Fletcher villager trades
The trade table below lists the documented base offers before demand, reputation, curing or other price modifiers. A trade shown as a purchase is what the fletcher gives emeralds for; a sale is what the player receives by paying emeralds or the listed combination.

How the enchanted-item prices are formed
The 7–21 emerald range for an enchanted bow is not a single fixed price. The documented formula is a two-emerald base plus the randomly selected enchantment level, which contributes 5–19 emeralds. For an enchanted crossbow, the base is three emeralds plus the selected enchantment level, producing the listed 8–22 emerald range.
What to collect for a fletcher
The profession accepts six useful input categories across its levels: sticks, gravel with emeralds for the flint offer, flint, string, feathers and tripwire hooks. Its sale side supplies ordinary arrows, bows and crossbows, then enchanted bows, enchanted crossbows and tipped arrows as the villager advances. That progression lets one fletcher serve both as an emerald buyer for gathered materials and as an archery supplier.

Java Edition versus Bedrock Edition
Trade availability is not identical between editions. The following probabilities are the documented chances for the listed novice offers to appear; they are not guarantees that every fletcher will show all three trades.

Because the probabilities differ, a trading setup designed around stick sales or arrow purchases should be planned for the edition being played. Do not assume that a Java trade table will appear with the same frequency in Bedrock.
Tipped-arrow pools
Java Edition selects the fletcher’s tipped-arrow type from brewable potion effects, including extended and strengthened variants where those versions exist. Bedrock Edition uses the defined 15-effect pool listed below:

The tipped-arrow offer is therefore edition-sensitive in two ways: the available effect pool is different, and the novice trade probabilities are different. Check the edition before designing a farm, storage system or combat loadout around a particular arrow effect.

Assigning the profession is only the first step. A fletcher must still be able to work at its station to restock. Place the table where the villager can reach and use it, and avoid treating a decorative table several blocks away as interchangeable with the claimed job site.
- Before trading: confirm that the villager’s profession has changed to fletcher.
- During trading: use the displayed offers to level the villager from novice through master.
- After trading: leave the workstation accessible so the villager can work and replenish offers.
- For multiple fletchers: provide each intended worker with an unclaimed table rather than assuming one block can serve every villager.
The documented restocking limit is up to two times per day when the villager can work at the station. If a trade is unavailable, first check the workstation’s accessibility and whether the villager can actually reach its claimed table.
Common mistakes and fixes

When a fletching table is worth building
Build one when you want a fletcher, not because you need a new crafting station. The block is especially useful in a planned trading area where an unemployed villager can be assigned, leveled and kept supplied with a reachable workstation. The trade list gives several ways to turn common drops or gathered materials into emeralds, while the sales side provides ammunition and ranged weapons.
For an archery-focused setup, decide first which side of the trade list matters most. Stick sales and arrow purchases are subject to the edition-specific novice probabilities. Flint, string, feathers and tripwire hooks appear at later levels, while enchanted bows, enchanted crossbows and tipped arrows require advancing the villager to expert or master. That ordering makes it important to confirm the profession before investing time in leveling.
