Minecraft’s flowers come from several different systems: ordinary biome generation, tall two-block plants, Sniffer crops, the Wither, Pale Garden time cycles, and the newest Spring to Life additions. This guide lists the 23 practical flower entries, explains where to obtain each one, identifies its dye output, and shows which flowers can actually be farmed with bone meal.

Every Minecraft flower at a glance
The practical flower roster contains ordinary small flowers, tall flowers, Sniffer-grown plants, special-event flowers, and decorative flower-like blocks. Pink petals and wildflowers are multi-flower ground blocks rather than single flowers. Eyeblossoms have open and closed states. Torchflowers and pitcher plants use the Sniffer system, while wither roses require Wither kills.

Ordinary flowers by biome
Plains and sunflower plains
Plains provide the broadest early-game selection: dandelions, poppies, azure bluets, oxeye daisies, cornflowers and tulips can appear naturally. Bone meal uses the biome’s flower-generation pattern, so the result is not necessarily the same at every position.
Sunflower plains are the only biome identified for natural sunflower generation. If you need a renewable supply of sunflowers rather than a single decorative specimen, locate this biome before building your collection route. Sunflowers are two blocks tall, so bring enough inventory space for tall plants and leave room above them when replanting.
#1 Best Overall
Flower forest
Flower forests are intentionally dense and are the best first destination for variety. Their documented generation gradient includes dandelions, poppies, alliums, azure bluets, red, orange, white and pink tulips, oxeye daisies, cornflowers and lilies of the valley. Different positions in the biome can produce different flowers when bone meal is used, so walk to a new location instead of repeatedly fertilizing one patch when a particular color is missing.
A flower forest is excellent for filling the common-flower portion of a storage system, but it is not an all-flower biome. Blue orchids, sunflowers, wildflowers, cactus flowers, eyeblossoms, Sniffer plants and wither roses still require their own routes.

Blue orchids are the characteristic swamp flower in the documented Java generation notes. A swamp trip is therefore more reliable than searching plains for light-blue dye ingredients. Mangrove swamp is a separate biome; do not assume that a Java swamp instruction automatically describes every edition or biome variant.
Meadow
Meadows sit near mountains and are naturally flower-rich. Their documented gradient can include allium, poppy, azure bluet, dandelion, cornflower and oxeye daisy. Meadows are also one of the biomes for wildflowers, so they can serve both the ordinary-flower hunt and the newer multi-flower collection route.
Forests
Forest vegetation can generate tall flowers such as lilacs, rose bushes and peonies. Lily of the valley also appears in flower-related forest generation. Because these plants occupy two blocks, leave vertical clearance when harvesting or replanting them. A forest search is useful for completing the tall-flower set, but it should not replace a sunflower-plains trip when sunflowers are specifically required.
Tall flowers and two-block placement
Sunflowers, lilacs, rose bushes, peonies and pitcher plants occupy two vertical blocks. A placement attempt fails if the block above is occupied, so clear headroom before building a decorative row. Their height also matters when planning storage, harvesting corridors and compact farms.
Tall flowers remain ordinary decorative blocks in most cases, but their dye roles differ: sunflowers provide yellow, rose bushes provide red, lilacs provide magenta and pitcher plants provide cyan. Peonies have no standard dye output listed here. A tall plant is therefore not automatically a two-dye ingredient or a special crop; check the individual entry rather than inferring its recipe from its size.
Flowers that do not come from ordinary grass
Sniffer flowers: torchflower and pitcher plant
Torchflowers and pitcher plants follow a separate progression. Obtain torchflower seeds and pitcher pods through the Sniffer system, then plant and grow them as crops. The harvested crop is the flower or plant shown in the table; wandering through a flower forest or applying bone meal to an unrelated patch will not substitute for the Sniffer route.
Rank #2
Torchflowers produce orange dye. Pitcher plants are tall and produce cyan dye. Their crop-based acquisition also makes them suitable for a dedicated planting area once you have secured the initial Sniffer items. Treat the initial seed or pod as the gate to this route, not as an ordinary flower drop.
Wither roses
Wither roses are associated with the Wither rather than normal biome generation. They appear through Wither interaction with killed entities, making them a combat-dependent resource. A wither rose damages entities that stand on it, so mark storage and transport areas clearly and keep ordinary paths away from a decorative display.

Because the acquisition event is dangerous, plan the collection area before summoning the Wither. A wither rose is useful for black dye and for its hazard behavior, but it is not a sensible substitute for a normal black-dye farm if you only need safe decoration.
Eyeblossoms in the Pale Garden
Eyeblossoms are tied to the Pale Garden and have open and closed states connected to local conditions and time of day. They are utility and decorative flowers, not ingredients in the standard dye list. If a specimen appears to change state, that is expected behavior rather than a damaged block or random texture change.
Record whether you are collecting the open or closed appearance when designing a display. The state-based look is part of the attraction, so a static screenshot or daytime-only route may not show every appearance.
Pink petals in cherry groves
Pink petals are the signature ground block of cherry groves. They differ from a conventional one-item flower because multiple petals can occupy a single block space. This makes them especially useful for layered ground decoration, but it also means that counting blocks does not tell you how many individual petals are present. Pink petals craft into pink dye.
Recommended Free Tools
When clearing a cherry grove, distinguish the petal layer from ordinary flowers in your inventory. It is a ground-cover block with a different placement model, not simply another pink tulip.
Wildflowers in birch forests and meadows
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.5 Spring to Life notes describe wildflowers as “a new type of flower which grow in Birch Forests, Old Growth Birch Forests and Meadows.” Up to four wildflowers can occupy one block space, and bone meal produces more wildflowers. They craft into yellow dye.
Rank #3
The multi-flower space is important for both building and harvesting. Do not plan a one-block-one-item storage estimate, and do not mistake a birch-forest search for a guarantee that every meadow flower will appear there.
Cactus flowers in deserts and badlands
Cactus flowers generate on cactuses in deserts and badlands. In Mojang’s 2025 Spring to Life notes, a one- or two-block cactus has a 10% chance to grow a cactus flower instead of extending, while a cactus three blocks or taller has a 25% chance. All four sides of the cactus must have space for the flower to grow. Each cactus flower crafts into one pink dye.

These requirements make cactus flowers a height- and spacing-dependent farm. Keep the four horizontal sides clear, check whether the cactus is one or two blocks tall versus at least three, and leave room to harvest without breaking the flower accidentally. A dense cactus wall that blocks a side does not satisfy the stated growth condition.
Dye colors made from flowers
The following mapping covers the standard dye output associated with the flowers in this guide.
| Dye | Flower ingredients |
|---|---|
| Yellow | Dandelion, sunflower, wildflowers |
| Red | Poppy, rose bush |
| Light blue | Blue orchid |
| Purple | Allium |
| Magenta | Lilac |
| Light gray | Azure bluet, oxeye daisy, white tulip |
| Orange | Orange tulip, torchflower |
| Pink | Pink tulip, pink petals, cactus flower |
| Blue | Cornflower |
| White | Lily of the valley |
| Cyan | Pitcher plant |
| Black | Wither rose |
Red tulips and peonies have no standard flower-to-dye output in this list. Eyeblossoms are not part of the standard dye list either. Flower-like blocks such as spore blossoms, chorus flowers, flowering azaleas and cherry leaves likewise do not provide a standard flower dye here. Sunflowers contribute yellow dye as an ingredient; their decorative presentation does not create an additional dye category.
For an offline reference while sorting a collection or planning a build, a Minecraft guide book can keep biome and recipe reminders beside your crafting area. Check the edition and current version on any listing, since recipes and flower mechanics can change with game updates.

Use the correct biome
Bone meal does not turn one universal patch of grass into every flower. In documented Java flower forests and plains, flower output follows a spatial generation gradient. The block’s position can determine the result, so a farm that stays in one spot may repeatedly produce the same subset.
- Start in a flower forest for the widest ordinary-flower coverage.
- Move to plains or sunflower plains when you need plains flowers or naturally generated sunflowers.
- Travel to a swamp for blue orchids.
- Use a meadow or birch forest when you need meadow flowers or wildflowers.
- Apply bone meal, harvest the result, then move several blocks if the target flower is not appearing.
- Keep Sniffer, Wither, Pale Garden, cherry grove and cactus-flower objectives separate; bone-mealing ordinary grass will not replace those acquisition systems.
Why one farm cannot guarantee every flower
Biome restrictions and spatial gradients are the main reasons a single bone-meal location fails as an all-flower farm. Flower forest density improves variety but does not make every flower available at every coordinate. Blue orchids, sunflowers, wildflowers, cactus flowers, eyeblossoms, torchflowers, pitcher plants and wither roses each have a route or condition that must be met independently.
Rank #4
Farm-planning checklist
- Bring clearance: Tall flowers and pitcher plants need two vertical blocks; cactus flowers need open space on all four sides.
- Mark coordinates: A flower-forest gradient can change the result as you move, so mark productive positions instead of assuming the whole biome behaves identically.
- Separate storage: Keep multi-flower blocks such as pink petals and wildflowers in their own labeled sections so block counts are not confused with individual flower counts.
- Protect hazardous plants: Fence or clearly mark wither roses before placing them near paths.
- Use the right starting item: Sniffer seeds and pods are prerequisites for torchflowers and pitcher plants; ordinary bone meal cannot create those crops.
- Check the edition: Java and Bedrock generation can differ, especially where a route is described from Java generation notes.
A practical collection route
- First pass: clear a flower forest and nearby plains for the common small flowers, tulips and lily of the valley.
- Yellow-dye pass: visit sunflower plains for sunflowers, then birch forest, old growth birch forest or meadow for wildflowers.
- Special-color pass: visit a swamp for blue orchids and a cherry grove for pink petals.
- Mountain pass: search meadows for their flower gradient and wildflowers.
- Sniffer pass: obtain torchflower seeds and pitcher pods, then grow the crops in a cleared planting area.
- Combat pass: create a controlled Wither-kill setup if wither roses are required, and collect them without stepping on the damaging blocks.
- Pale Garden pass: collect eyeblossoms while observing their open or closed state rather than treating them as static flowers.
- Desert pass: grow cactuses in a desert or badlands area with four-sided clearance to roll for cactus flowers.
What flowers are useful for besides dye?
- Decoration: Every ordinary flower can be placed as scenery; tall flowers create two-block accents.
- Flower pots: Most ordinary flowers can be displayed in flower pots.
- Bees: Ordinary flowers can be used by bees.
- Composting: Most ordinary flowers can be composted.
- Hazards: Wither roses damage entities that stand on them, so they are unsuitable for an unmarked walkway.
- Layered ground design: Pink petals and wildflowers support multiple flowers in one block space, unlike a normal single flower.
- State-based decoration: Eyeblossoms change between open and closed states in the Pale Garden.
Java and Bedrock version cautions
Flower generation and bone-meal behavior can differ between Java and Bedrock, and a swamp instruction based on Java generation notes should be labeled as such. The cactus-flower and wildflower details above come from Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.5 Spring to Life release notes. Because new game drops can add flowers or alter mechanics, verify the exact recipe output and acquisition behavior against the target edition and version when building a long-term farm.

The Minecraft Wiki roster also catalogs chorus flowers, spore blossoms and flowering azaleas as related flower-like plants. They are useful for decoration or their own block-specific mechanics, but they should not be mixed into an ordinary-flower dye chart. Cherry leaves are likewise decorative vegetation rather than a flower ingredient.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are all the flowers in Minecraft?
The practical roster is dandelion, poppy, blue orchid, allium, azure bluet, oxeye daisy, cornflower, lily of the valley, red/orange/white/pink tulips, rose bush, lilac, peony, sunflower, wither rose, torchflower, pitcher plant, eyeblossom, pink petals, wildflowers and cactus flower. Chorus flower, spore blossom and flowering azalea are related flower-like blocks rather than entries in the ordinary dye list.
Where do I find blue orchids?
Search swamps; the documented Java generation notes identify the swamp as the characteristic biome. Mangrove swamp is separate, and edition-specific generation should be checked before relying on the same route.
Which flowers can bone meal produce?
Bone meal can produce biome-appropriate flowers, including plains and flower-forest varieties, and it produces more wildflowers. Output follows biome rules and, in documented Java flower forests and plains, a spatial gradient. It cannot replace the Sniffer, Wither, Pale Garden or cactus-flower routes.

Find sunflower plains, the exclusive natural biome identified for sunflowers. Sunflowers are two blocks tall and provide yellow dye.
How do I get lily of the valley?
Look in flower forests and forest-related flower generation. It is a small flower and produces white dye.
Do red tulips make red dye?
Not in the standard flower-to-dye mapping used here. Poppies and rose bushes provide red dye; red tulips have no standard output listed.
Best Value
How do cactus flowers grow?
They grow on cactuses in deserts and badlands. A one- or two-block cactus has a 10% chance to grow one instead of extending; a cactus at least three blocks tall has a 25% chance. All four sides must have space, and each cactus flower makes one pink dye.
How many wildflowers fit in one block?
Up to four wildflowers can occupy one block space. Bone meal produces more, and wildflowers make yellow dye.
Are torchflowers found in flower forests?
No. Obtain torchflower seeds through the Sniffer system and grow the crop. Torchflowers make orange dye.
Why did my wither rose hurt me?
Wither roses damage entities standing on them. Keep them away from unmarked paths, storage entrances and other areas where players or mobs may stand.
Do eyeblossoms make dye?
Eyeblossoms are not part of the standard dye list. They are Pale Garden flowers with open and closed states tied to local conditions and time of day.
Are pink petals ordinary flowers?
No. Pink petals are a cherry-grove ground block, and multiple petals can occupy one block space. They still provide pink dye.
The Bottom Line
Use a flower forest and plains for the ordinary collection, then make separate trips for swamp blue orchids, sunflower plains sunflowers, cherry-grove pink petals, birch-forest or meadow wildflowers, Sniffer crops, Pale Garden eyeblossoms, Wither roses and cactus flowers. Match every target to its biome or acquisition system, and verify Java or Bedrock behavior for the version you play.
