The command is /gamerule <rule_name> <value>, but the rule name depends on your edition and version. Java Edition 1.21.11 and later uses snake_case names such as keep_inventory and mob_griefing. Older Java versions use camelCase names, while Bedrock Edition uses lowercase names without separators, such as keepinventory. Choose the correct spelling first, then change only the settings that match how you want the world to play.

What a Minecraft gamerule controls

A gamerule is a named world or server setting that changes a specific piece of game behavior. The /gamerule command reads a rule or writes a new value to it. Rules can control time, weather, mob behavior, death penalties, command feedback and simulation speed.

Gamerules are not resource-pack options and they do not change a player’s key bindings. They are saved with the world (or applied to the server world), so a setting normally affects everyone playing that world. The exact rule list and spelling are edition- and version-dependent.

Command form

/gamerule <rule_name> <value>

For example, on a Java installation using the current names, the following stops the normal passage of time:

/gamerule advance_time false

Boolean rules accept true or false. Numeric rules, such as randomTickSpeed on older Java versions or its current equivalent where applicable, require a number. Enter the argument exactly as your edition expects; Java command arguments have been case-sensitive since 1.13.

Check your edition and version before typing a rule

The same behavior can have three different spellings. A command copied from a video or server guide can therefore fail even when the setting exists in your game.

Environment Naming style Examples
Java Edition 1.21.11 and later snake_case keep_inventory, mob_griefing, advance_time, natural_health_regeneration
Java Edition 1.21.10 and earlier Legacy camelCase keepInventory, mobGriefing, doDaylightCycle
Bedrock Edition Lowercase, no separators keepinventory, mobgriefing, dodaylightcycle, pvp, showcoordinates

The Java naming boundary is important: a command that worked in 1.21.10 may need a different rule name after updating to 1.21.11. Bedrock examples are not interchangeable with Java examples. If the game reports an unknown rule, stop and check the live rule list for your exact edition and version rather than trying random combinations of capitals or underscores.

How to change a gamerule safely

  1. Identify the edition. Confirm whether you are running Java or Bedrock, and note the full version number.
  2. Make sure you can run commands. In a solo world, enable the world’s command or cheat permission as appropriate. On a multiplayer server, you need the permission level granted by the server owner.
  3. Back up the world. A backup gives you a recovery point if a rule produces an unexpected gameplay or performance change.
  4. Use the spelling for that edition. Do not replace Java’s underscores with Bedrock’s compact name, or vice versa.
  5. Change one rule at a time. This makes it clear which setting caused a change.
  6. Test the result in the world. Sleep, die, wait for a weather change, or observe a farm depending on the rule you changed.
  7. Record intentional changes. A short list in your server notes prevents a later administrator from mistaking a deliberate setting for a bug.

To undo a change, run the same command with the opposite Boolean value or restore the previous numeric value. Gamerules do not need a restart in the usual case, although a server administrator may choose to restart after a maintenance change.

The most useful gamerules

These settings cover the requests most players mean when they search for “best Minecraft gamerules.” The Java commands below use the 1.21.11-and-later names supplied for the current naming scheme. Use the edition table above before copying them.

Keep items after death

/gamerule keep_inventory true

This keeps a player’s inventory when they die. The documented default for the legacy Java rule keepInventory is false, meaning normal death loss is enabled. Set it to true for building worlds, family servers or exploration-focused play where recovering a dropped inventory would be a distraction.

On older Java versions use:

/gamerule keepInventory true

On Bedrock use:

/gamerule keepinventory true

Freeze the day-night cycle

/gamerule advance_time false

In Java 1.21.11 and later, advance_time is the current name for stopping normal time progression. Older Java guides commonly show doDaylightCycle:

/gamerule doDaylightCycle false

Bedrock uses the compact form:

/gamerule dodaylightcycle false

Freezing time leaves the current time of day in place. It is useful for a permanently lit build site, a map with a fixed presentation time or a classroom demonstration. It does not, by itself, stop every other world process, so farms and other simulated systems can still require their own settings.

Prevent mobs from changing blocks

/gamerule mob_griefing false

This prevents mob-griefing behavior, such as mobs altering the environment, while leaving ordinary mob spawning and combat as separate concerns. The legacy Java spelling is mobGriefing; Bedrock uses mobgriefing.

Use this when you want creeper explosions or other mob interactions to stop damaging a shared build. Test any farm that relies on a mob placing, picking up or otherwise manipulating blocks, because disabling the rule can change that farm’s behavior.

Stop weather from changing

/gamerule advance_weather false

On the current Java naming set, advance_weather is the recommended rule name for stopping automatic weather progression. This is separate from the day-night rule: one controls time and the other controls weather. If your version rejects this name, consult the exact rule list for that version before substituting an older spelling.

Disable phantom spawning

/gamerule spawn_phantoms false

This turns off phantom spawning without requiring a permanent change to the difficulty setting. It suits servers where players build or explore on irregular schedules and do not want missed sleep to create an aerial threat. The rule changes spawning; it does not remove phantoms that are already present.

Hide command-block feedback

/gamerule command_block_output false

Set this to false when a command-heavy map or server is filling chat with command-block messages. Keep feedback enabled while debugging a command system so that you can see whether blocks are executing and what errors they report. Bedrock’s compact naming convention is commandblockoutput.

Control natural health regeneration

Java 1.21.11 and later lists the rule as natural_health_regeneration. Because rule availability and names can differ between editions, verify the exact command accepted by your installation before changing it. This setting is distinct from healing supplied by food, potions or commands; do not assume that changing it disables every source of health recovery.

Random tick speed: crops, fire and performance

randomTickSpeed controls how much random-tick work the game attempts. Random ticks are used by systems such as crop growth and fire spread, so changing the value can make those processes appear faster or slower. Higher values also increase random-tick work and therefore can increase CPU use.

Edition Documented default Practical implication
Java Edition 3 The ordinary Java baseline for random-tick processing.
Bedrock Edition 1 Bedrock’s documented baseline is lower than Java’s.

The values above are defaults, not performance guarantees. A large farm, many loaded chunks or a low-powered device can still run poorly at the default, while a powerful system may tolerate a modest increase. Raise the value gradually, observe frame rate and server tick health, and return to the documented default if the world becomes unstable. Do not use an extreme value as a substitute for designing an efficient farm.

Because the exact spelling and accepted range can vary by edition and version, use the command autocomplete or the current rule reference for your installation when setting random tick speed. Keep a note of the original value so you can restore it.

Ready-to-use setting profiles

There is no single “best” configuration. A good profile starts with the experience you want and changes only the rules that support it.

Creative or showcase world

  • advance_time false to hold a chosen time of day.
  • advance_weather false to keep lighting and visibility consistent.
  • mob_griefing false to protect finished builds from mob damage.
  • keep_inventory true so experimentation does not require item recovery.
  • spawn_phantoms false for uninterrupted construction.
  • command_block_output false after command systems have been tested.

Apply the profile one rule at a time. A fixed time and weather can make a map easier to present, but they also remove natural variation, so leave those rules at their defaults if the world is intended to feel like ordinary survival.

Co-operative survival with fewer setbacks

  • Set keep_inventory true if the group values exploration over death-recovery runs.
  • Leave time and weather advancing if you want the normal survival rhythm.
  • Set mob_griefing false only after checking that no farm depends on mob block interaction.
  • Disable phantoms with spawn_phantoms false if the group does not want sleep schedules to affect play.

This profile changes the cost of mistakes without freezing the world. Discuss the choices with all players before applying them on a shared server.

Technical or command-map testing

  • Keep command output enabled while building and debugging.
  • Change one gamerule between tests and write down the value.
  • Use a temporary random-tick adjustment only for a controlled test, then restore the baseline.
  • Freeze time or weather only when deterministic conditions are part of the test.

Separating test settings from the final map prevents a diagnostic convenience from becoming an accidental permanent rule.

Java and Bedrock differences that cause the most errors

Task Current Java example Older Java example Bedrock example
Keep inventory keep_inventory keepInventory keepinventory
Mob griefing mob_griefing mobGriefing mobgriefing
Day-night progression advance_time doDaylightCycle dodaylightcycle
Command-block output command_block_output Verify the name for your version commandblockoutput
Other Bedrock examples Not a Java spelling guide Not a Java spelling guide pvp, showcoordinates

The table is a spelling aid, not a complete availability list. Some rules exist in one edition but not the other, and a familiar-looking name does not prove that the rule is supported in your version.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Defaults and uncertain values

Use defaults as a starting point, not as a promise that every edition shares the same behavior. The documented baseline for Java’s legacy keepInventory is false, and the legacy doDaylightCycle default is true. Random tick speed is documented as 3 in Java and 1 in Bedrock.

spawnRadius needs particular care. One guide reports 10 for Java and 5 for Bedrock, while a Minecraft Wiki history note says the default was set to 10 to match Java. Because those statements conflict for Bedrock, do not rely on a remembered number; inspect the value in the exact Bedrock release you are running before planning a spawn area around it.

Rules and defaults can change with updates. The safest habit is to verify the current name and value in the live Minecraft Wiki or the command’s in-game suggestions for your edition and version, especially after an update.

Troubleshooting gamerule commands

“Unknown or incomplete command”

Check the edition first, then compare the spelling with the version table. In particular, test whether your Java version is 1.21.11 or later, and check every underscore, capital letter and separator. Bedrock’s keepinventory is not the same token as Java’s keep_inventory.

“You do not have permission”

Command access is controlled by the world or server. Enable the appropriate command permission in a solo world or ask the server administrator for the required operator level. A correctly spelled rule still cannot be changed without permission.

The command succeeds but gameplay looks unchanged

Test the specific behavior the rule controls. For example, advance_time false affects time progression, not weather; advance_weather false affects weather progression, not the clock. A rule also may not affect entities or events that were already created before the change, so test with a new event after applying it.

A farm stopped working

Review recent changes, especially mob_griefing and random tick speed. Some designs depend on mob interactions or random ticks. Restore the previous value, test in a copy of the world and then decide whether the rule or the farm design should change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server becomes slow after changing random tick speed

Lower the value toward the edition’s documented default, check the number of loaded chunks and test again. Higher random-tick values increase CPU work; they are not a free speed multiplier.

A repeatable verification routine

  1. Write down the world version, edition and the rule you intend to change.
  2. Check the exact current name, including its capitalization and separators.
  3. Read the current value before replacing it, and save that value in your notes.
  4. Apply the new value with /gamerule.
  5. Trigger a small, safe test that exercises only that rule.
  6. Watch for side effects in farms, command systems, mob behavior and server performance.
  7. Keep the change only if it supports the world’s purpose; otherwise restore the recorded value.

This process is more reliable than copying a large block of commands because it exposes edition mismatches and makes rollback straightforward.

The Bottom Line

Use /gamerule <rule_name> <value>, but verify the rule name against your edition and version first. Java 1.21.11 and later uses snake_case, older Java uses legacy camelCase, and Bedrock uses lowercase names without separators. Start with the small set of rules that supports your intended play style, record the old values, and treat random tick speed and conflicting defaults with particular caution.
