A Minecraft hopper is a redstone component that collects item entities and moves items between inventories. Craft one with one chest and five iron ingots: put the chest in the center of the crafting grid and arrange the ingots around it in a hopper shape. Hoppers are most useful as the collection and routing layer in automatic smelters, mob and crop farms, animal systems, item sorters, and crafter chains.

What a hopper does—and what it does not do

Its core job

A hopper is an item-handling block. It can pull items from a container above it, collect item entities in the world, and push those items into the container or hopper it points toward. That makes it the connection between a farm’s production area and its storage: the farm creates, harvests, cooks, or kills, while the hopper gathers and routes the resulting items.

Hoppers are therefore infrastructure rather than a farm by themselves. A hopper does not spawn mobs, grow crops, breed animals, smelt without a furnace, or perform a killing step. It only moves items produced by another mechanism. A reliable build starts by identifying where items appear and where they must end up, then placing hoppers between those points.

Why the distinction matters

Many “automatic” farms are actually several systems joined together. A crop farm might use water or villagers to move harvested crops, a hopper to collect them, and a chest to store them. A mob farm might use a killing chamber, then hoppers beneath that chamber, then a storage line. If the production mechanism works but the hopper is facing the wrong way or is locked by redstone, the farm can appear broken even though its main mechanism is functioning.

How to craft a hopper

Materials

  • One chest. Any standard chest can be used in the recipe.
  • Five iron ingots. The recipe consumes five ingots for each hopper.

Crafting-grid arrangement

Place the chest in the middle slot of a crafting grid. Put the five iron ingots around it so they form the sloping, hopper-like outline: ingots occupy the upper-left, upper-middle, upper-right, middle-left, and middle-right positions, with the chest in the center. The lower row remains empty. This produces one hopper.

  1. Open a crafting table or another crafting grid that accepts the recipe.
  2. Place one chest in the exact center slot.
  3. Surround the chest with five iron ingots in the hopper shape.
  4. Take the hopper from the result slot and place it in your inventory.

If the result does not appear, check that the chest is centered and that there are exactly five ingots in the surrounding positions. A chest placed one slot off-center will not satisfy the recipe.

Planning how many to make

Crafting cost becomes important in large farms. Every hopper requires its own chest and five iron ingots, so a design with long transport lines or many filter modules can consume substantially more iron than a compact collection point. Before mining or crafting, count the hoppers in the farm plan, include at least one storage container at the destination, and reserve additional iron for changes during construction.

Place and orient a hopper correctly

Point the nozzle before you place it

The narrow end of a hopper is its output. Items leave through that nozzle and enter the block or container it points toward. Look at the destination while placing the hopper so its nozzle faces the chest, barrel, furnace, smoker, blast furnace, crafter, or next hopper in the line.

A hopper that is visually underneath a chest is not automatically connected to every nearby block. Its orientation determines where items leave. If you need to change the direction, break and replace the hopper while aiming at the desired destination; rotating an already placed hopper is not a separate interaction.

Use a buffer at the end

Put a chest, barrel, or another suitable container at the end of a transport line. The container acts as a buffer when a farm produces a short burst of items. Without storage, a line can back up as soon as its final destination is full, causing items to remain in the world or in upstream inventories.

Check for redstone power

Redstone power locks a hopper and disables its item transfer. This is essential for item filters and timing circuits, but an accidental powered block can stop an otherwise correct farm. When diagnosing a stalled line, inspect nearby redstone dust, torches, repeaters, comparators, levers, and powered blocks before rebuilding the collection system.

How fast hoppers move items

The planning numbers

Hopper collection has an eight-game-tick cooldown. For transport planning, Minecraft item-transport guidance commonly uses 2.5 items per second as the familiar hopper transfer figure. Treat that number as a design estimate for a hopper line, not as a promise that every farm will deliver exactly that rate under every condition.

Several factors affect what you observe: whether a hopper is collecting from the world or pulling from a container, whether the destination is available, whether another hopper in the chain is occupied, and whether redstone power has locked a section. A line can therefore look slower than its nominal planning rate when items arrive in bursts or when the destination is full.

Why long chains back up

Every additional hopper adds another transfer point. If a farm produces items faster than the line can pass them onward, items accumulate at the first constrained point. A long chain can also make a delay visible: an item may need to pass through several cooldowns before reaching storage.

  • Use the shortest practical hopper route from the collection area to storage.
  • Add a chest or barrel as a buffer where production arrives in bursts.
  • Split a heavy line into multiple collection routes instead of forcing all output through one path.
  • Use a water stream or another faster transport method where the build allows it and where the stream will not interfere with the farm.
  • Keep the farm’s peak production in mind, not only its average output.

If a line repeatedly fills its input container, the hopper is not “missing” items; the system is throughput-limited. Increase buffer capacity, reduce the arrival rate, shorten or split the route, or replace part of the route with a faster transport method.

Automatic furnaces, smokers, and blast furnaces

Basic three-hopper layout

An automatic smelter uses one hopper for raw materials, one for fuel, and one for finished output. The furnace sits in the middle. The input hopper feeds the furnace from above, the fuel hopper feeds it from the side, and the output hopper sits underneath and points into a chest or other storage container.

  1. Place the furnace, smoker, or blast furnace where it can be accessed for maintenance.
  2. Place a hopper above it and orient the nozzle toward the furnace’s input inventory.
  3. Place a second hopper beside the furnace and point it into the furnace’s fuel inventory.
  4. Place a third hopper below the furnace and point it into a chest, barrel, or the next storage block.
  5. Put smeltable material in the top container and fuel in the side container.
  6. Watch the output container. Finished items should leave the furnace through the bottom hopper.

What changes between furnace types

The hopper arrangement is the same for a furnace, smoker, and blast furnace. The processing block determines what it can cook and how it processes those items; the hoppers simply deliver the inputs and collect the result. A design that feeds a furnace can usually be adapted to the other two by replacing the central block and keeping the same input, fuel, and output positions.

Experience is retained until collection

Hopper-fed furnaces can retain the experience associated with smelting until a player collects it. This means an automated furnace can process items unattended while still allowing the player to receive the stored smelting experience later by taking an output item from the furnace interface. Do not assume that emptying the output chest alone performs the same player-collection action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smelter failure checks

  • If raw items remain in the top container, verify that the upper hopper points into the furnace and is not powered.
  • If the furnace has raw material but does not burn, check the side hopper’s direction and confirm that fuel is in the fuel container rather than the input container.
  • If finished items remain in the furnace, inspect the bottom hopper’s direction and the capacity of the destination chest.
  • If the machine works briefly and then stops, check whether the fuel supply or the output buffer has been exhausted or filled.

Hoppers in mob farms

Collection below the killing area

In a mob farm, the production step is spawning and the killing step is the mechanism that defeats the mobs. Hoppers belong beneath the collection or killing area, where they gather dropped items and route them to storage. This is what turns a killing chamber into a system that deposits loot without requiring the player to pick up every item manually.

  1. Identify the exact floor or channel where drops land.
  2. Place hoppers under that area so their pickup surface covers the expected drop locations.
  3. Point the hoppers toward a chest, barrel, or a short line leading to storage.
  4. Test with a small number of drops before enclosing or scaling the farm.
  5. Add storage capacity appropriate to the farm’s operating time.

Hoppers do not improve spawning rates or damage mobs. If no items reach the chest, first test whether the killing mechanism produces drops, then test the hopper orientation and storage path separately.

Handling broad drop areas

A single hopper collects only where its pickup area and the farm’s geometry allow. When drops can land across a broad floor, use a collection arrangement that directs items toward defined pickup points, or place enough hoppers to cover the landing area. The best choice depends on the farm’s shape, the number of drops, and the amount of iron you are willing to spend.

Hoppers in crop farms

Where collection happens

Crop farms use water, villagers, pistons, or other farm-specific mechanisms to move harvested crops toward a pickup point. Hoppers then collect those items and deliver them to storage. In some designs the crops fall directly onto hoppers; in others, water carries them into a hopper or a short hopper line.

  1. Determine how the farm harvests its crops and where the items are deposited.
  2. Build a hopper pickup point at that deposit location.
  3. Point the hopper toward a chest or buffer container.
  4. Run a controlled harvest cycle and verify that every crop type reaches storage.
  5. Check for overflow when the farm has been left running long enough to fill the destination.

A hopper does not make a crop farm fully automatic by itself. Fully automatic designs may still rely on villagers, water timing, redstone activation, or another farm-specific mechanic. Treat the hopper as the collection and storage stage, not as the harvesting logic.

Hoppers in animal farms

Cookers and collection chambers

Animal systems commonly place a hopper beneath the output area of a cooker, breeding system, or automated killing chamber. The hopper gathers meat, leather, wool, eggs, or other items produced by the design and sends them to storage. In a cooker, a top or side hopper can also deliver inputs and fuel in the same general way as an automatic furnace.

Separate living animals from item output

Build the collection point where items actually land, not merely beneath the enclosure. Animals may be moved, bred, killed, or cooked in different chambers. Trace the item path from the final action to the storage container, then place hoppers at the point where drops become available. If the farm uses a timing circuit, confirm that redstone does not lock the collection hopper during the output phase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Item sorters and organized storage

What a filter hopper does

An item sorter uses hoppers, containers, and redstone to separate selected items from a mixed input stream. A filter hopper holds the pattern that identifies the item it should accept. When the matching item arrives, the redstone circuit unlocks the relevant transfer path and sends that item to its assigned chest or barrel.

Because sorter designs differ, do not assume that a filter arrangement, redstone signal, or overflow behavior from one tutorial works unchanged in every edition or version. Follow the design’s exact instructions, then test it with the intended item and with unrelated items before connecting a valuable storage system.

Build and test in stages

  1. Construct one filter module with its input hopper, filter hopper, redstone components, and destination container.
  2. Place the intended filter pattern according to the design you are following.
  3. Send a small quantity of the target item through the input and confirm that it reaches the correct container.
  4. Send an unrelated item and verify that it continues along the main line or reaches the overflow destination.
  5. Only after the module passes both tests should you duplicate it for additional item types.
  6. Keep a final overflow chest so unsorted items have somewhere safe to go.

Overflow is part of the design

A sorter without overflow planning eventually fills a filter, destination chest, or input line. Reserve storage for items that are not assigned to a filter and decide what should happen when a selected chest is full. A buffer and a visible overflow container make failures easier to diagnose than allowing items to disappear into an inaccessible part of the mechanism.

Feeding a crafter and building factory chains

Hoppers can deliver ingredients to the crafter, allowing repeated recipes to be assembled from a supply line. They also connect multiple stages, such as a furnace that processes raw materials and a crafter that turns the output into a finished item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the crafter at the point where ingredients must arrive.
  2. Point separate input hoppers into the crafter or use the arrangement required by the recipe and design.
  3. Provide a container buffer before each input so short production bursts do not interrupt the chain.
  4. Connect the crafter’s output to a hopper and then to storage or the next processing stage.
  5. Use redstone activation appropriate to the crafter recipe; hoppers supply items but do not decide when the crafter operates.
  6. Test with a small batch and inspect for ingredients that remain in the wrong slot or block later batches.

Factory chains magnify hopper limitations. If several stages each depend on a single hopper route, the slowest route controls the finished-output rate. Design each stage with its own buffer and make the final storage large enough for the chain’s combined output.

Choosing a hopper layout

Use case Where hoppers go Important design concern Automation boundary
Automatic smelter Above for raw items, beside for fuel, below for output Fuel supply, output capacity, and experience collection Hoppers feed and empty the processor; the furnace performs smelting
Mob farm Under the killing or collection area Drop coverage, storage capacity, and pickup geometry The farm must still spawn and kill mobs
Crop farm At the harvest deposit or the end of a water channel Harvest timing, item concentration, and overflow Water, villagers, pistons, or another mechanism harvests crops
Animal farm Under the output, cooker, or killing chamber Where drops land and whether redstone locks collection Breeding, movement, killing, or cooking comes from other components
Item sorter In filter modules between an input line and storage Filter pattern, redstone locking, and overflow behavior The circuit determines sorting; hoppers provide item movement
Crafter chain At ingredient inputs and finished-output connections Input balance, recipe slot behavior, and stage buffers Redstone activates the crafter; hoppers supply ingredients

When comparing two designs for the same farm, evaluate collection throughput, iron and redstone cost, storage capacity, physical footprint, maintenance risk, edition compatibility, and whether the design is genuinely automatic or still needs a player, villager, or redstone activation.

Common hopper problems and fixes

Items never leave the source

  • Check that the hopper’s nozzle points toward the intended destination.
  • Check whether the hopper is receiving redstone power and is therefore locked.
  • Confirm that the destination container is not full and that another hopper is not blocking the route.

Items stop partway through a line

  • Inspect the first hopper where items accumulate; that is usually the bottleneck or a locked segment.
  • Look for a full chest, barrel, furnace slot, crafter input, or sorter filter.
  • Shorten the chain, add a buffer, split the route, or replace a suitable section with faster transport.

A sorter sends items to the wrong chest

  • Test the filter module alone with one target item and one unrelated item.
  • Verify that the filter hopper contains the pattern required by that specific design.
  • Check redstone connections and ensure adjacent modules are not unlocking each other.
  • Confirm that the build’s instructions match your Java or Bedrock edition and exact game version.

The farm works only when watched

Check for a missing storage buffer, a full destination, a fuel shortage, or a timing circuit that powers the collection hopper at the wrong moment. Run the farm while observing each stage: item creation, hopper pickup, transfer through the line, and arrival in storage. Isolating the stages is faster than replacing every hopper at once.

Java, Bedrock, and version checks

Hopper behavior and sorter edge cases can differ between Java and Bedrock, and a design can change as the game is updated. There is no single compatibility guarantee for every hopper farm. Treat the edition and game version as part of the build specification.

  • Identify the edition and version you are playing before copying a farm.
  • Use a test world to validate orientation, redstone locking, sorter behavior, and overflow handling.
  • Build one module first rather than committing all of your iron and storage materials.
  • Scale only after the test module survives both normal operation and a full-container condition.

This approach is especially important for item sorters and redstone-heavy crafter chains, where a small behavioral difference can stop an entire storage system.

A practical build checklist

  • Have one chest and five iron ingots for every hopper you intend to craft.
  • Mark the source, destination, and direction of every item path before placing blocks.
  • Point each hopper’s nozzle toward its destination while placing it.
  • Provide a chest, barrel, or other buffer at the end of each line.
  • Keep redstone components away from hoppers unless the lock is intentional.
  • Estimate peak item production and avoid making one hopper line carry every output.
  • Test with ordinary items before loading valuable drops or rare materials.
  • Plan an overflow destination for sorters and long-running farms.
  • Record the edition and version used by the design so future troubleshooting starts with the correct assumptions.

Where to learn more redstone

Once the basic hopper recipe and layouts make sense, a dedicated redstone reference can help with comparators, locks, clocks, filters, and larger contraptions. Minecraft: Guide to Redstone (Updated) is a 96-page hardcover by Mojang AB and The Official Minecraft Team, published November 22, 2022 by Random House Worlds (ISBN 9780593158579). It is aimed at understanding redstone components and contraptions, which makes it a natural next step for building item sorters, automatic furnaces, and multi-stage farm systems. Retail price, stock, and regional availability can change.

Key takeaways

Craft a hopper from one chest and five iron ingots, orient its nozzle toward the destination, and give the line enough storage to absorb bursts. Plan around the eight-game-tick collection cooldown and the commonly used 2.5-items-per-second transfer estimate. The highest-value applications are automatic smelters, mob-drop collection, crop and animal farms, item sorting, and crafter feed systems. In every case, the hopper handles collection and routing; another mechanism must create, harvest, process, kill, or activate the farm.
