How to Fix the WordPress Background Request Blocked Error

A background request blocked warning is a failed WordPress self-request, not one specific bug. Learn how to capture the exact error, isolate plugins and themes, check HTTP restrictions, trace firewall and TLS failures, and verify WP-Cron, updates, and the block editor afterward.

The “background request blocked” notice in WordPress Site Health means WordPress could not successfully connect to its own public URL or to a REST API test endpoint. It is a diagnostic result, not a single bug. Capture the exact HTTP or cURL error first, then isolate plugins and the theme, check WP_HTTP_BLOCK_EXTERNAL, inspect REST and web-server controls, and involve your host if firewall, DNS, SSL, or authentication rules reject the self-request.

What the background request warning actually means

WordPress Site Health runs background-update and loopback tests through its REST API. A loopback is WordPress connecting back to its own publicly accessible site. As the WordPress Developer Resources handbook puts it, “A loopback request is when WordPress tries to connect back to its own site.” WordPress uses these connections for scheduled WP-Cron events and to check whether plugin or theme edits can be safely completed.

The same underlying failure may also appear as a failed loopback request, an unavailable REST API, or “HTTP requests are blocked.” Those messages identify a failed layer, not its root cause. A plugin or theme, a WordPress HTTP restriction, REST access control, a web server, TLS or SSL, DNS, HTTP authentication, a reverse proxy, or a host firewall can all prevent the request from completing.

When the request fails, scheduled events can stop running on time, automatic updates can be affected, the block editor may report REST errors, and integrations that depend on the REST API can break. A warning limited to Site Health is less urgent than a warning accompanied by missed cron jobs, failed updates, or an unusable editor, but both should be diagnosed rather than dismissed.

Capture the precise failure before changing anything

Do not begin by disabling security features or editing server files. The status code and error text determine which layer to investigate.

  1. Sign in to WordPress and open Tools > Site Health.
  2. Open the Status tab and expand the tests for the REST API, loopback requests, background updates, and HTTP requests.
  3. Copy the complete message, including an HTTP status, cURL message, timeout text, or TLS certificate detail. Record the time shown by the test and the site’s canonical HTTPS URL.
  4. If you administer the site through logs or a control panel, save the matching web-server, firewall, reverse-proxy, and PHP log entries before making a change.

The Site Health tests use the following REST routes, which are useful when matching access-log entries:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • /wp-site-health/v1/tests/background-updates
  • /wp-site-health/v1/tests/loopback-requests

Keep the original message. A later “resolved” result does not explain which change fixed the problem, and changing several layers at once makes a recurrence difficult to diagnose.

Use the response to choose the right layer

Classify the failure by the observed response, the layer that can produce it, and the features affected. The classification narrows the search; it is not a substitute for checking logs.

Observed result First layer to inspect What it commonly indicates
403 Forbidden Access controls A security plugin, web-application firewall, ModSecurity rule, HTTP authentication, or another rule is rejecting the self-request.
404 Not Found REST route and server routing Check whether the requested route reaches WordPress and whether rewrite or proxy rules alter the path.
5xx response Application or web server Inspect PHP, WordPress, proxy, and web-server logs at the test timestamp for the component returning the server error.
Timeout Routing and firewall The request may be unable to reach the site, or a firewall, proxy, or server is not responding in time.
TLS or SSL error Certificate and hostname configuration Verify that the certificate is valid for the site’s hostname and that the server presents the expected certificate chain.

A status can be misleading when a proxy masks the origin response. Always compare the Site Health result with the web-server and firewall records from the same minute.

Fix the error in a controlled sequence

1. Temporarily deactivate plugins

Plugins are the fastest cause to isolate because they can add authentication, block REST routes, alter HTTP requests, or terminate loopback calls. Deactivate all standard plugins temporarily, then rerun the affected Site Health tests. If possible, include must-use plugins in the review; they load outside the normal Plugins screen and can continue enforcing a rule after ordinary plugins are disabled.

If the warning clears, reactivate plugins one at a time. Run the test after each activation and note which plugin brings the error back. Leave unrelated plugins active only after the test remains clean. Once the conflicting plugin is identified, update it, review its REST or firewall settings, or ask its maintainer for a rule that permits WordPress’s own authenticated request. Do not leave every plugin disabled as a permanent “fix,” because that removes site functionality and does not identify the cause.

2. Switch to a bundled default theme

A theme can register security hooks, change REST behavior, or introduce PHP errors that only appear during a loopback. Switch temporarily to a bundled default WordPress theme and rerun the tests. If the warning disappears, the original theme is the likely source. Review its custom code, security callbacks, and error logs, then update or repair it before switching back.

Theme isolation is safe only when you understand the visual impact on a live site. Schedule the check during a maintenance window or use a staging copy when possible, and restore the original theme after collecting the result.

3. Check WordPress HTTP restrictions

Open wp-config.php and search for WP_HTTP_BLOCK_EXTERNAL. When this constant is enabled, WordPress blocks outbound HTTP requests unless the destination is explicitly allowed. A deliberate policy may be required in a locked-down environment, so do not simply delete it.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

If the policy should remain, use WP_ACCESSIBLE_HOSTS to allow the hostnames that WordPress must contact. The value is a comma-separated list and supports wildcard domains. For example:

define('WP_HTTP_BLOCK_EXTERNAL', true);
define('WP_ACCESSIBLE_HOSTS', 'example.com,*.example.com');

Replace the example names with the actual site and service hostnames required by your installation. Keep the constants in the configuration section recommended by your deployment, preserve existing entries, and remove accidental spaces or line breaks inside the value. A syntax error in wp-config.php can take the entire site offline, so make a backup and use the hosting file manager or deployment process appropriate to your environment.

If the constant was added by an administrator for security or compliance, document the exception and obtain approval before changing it. The correct remedy may be adding a narrowly scoped allowed hostname rather than removing the restriction.

4. Check REST access and edge security controls

Security plugins, web-application firewalls, ModSecurity rules, reverse proxies, HTTP authentication, and rate limits can reject requests that originate from the site itself. Check whether the rule blocks the REST namespace, the WordPress user-agent, the server’s own IP address, or requests without a browser cookie.

Review the REST API response in Site Health and then inspect the edge-control logs for the same timestamp. If a firewall event names a rule ID, use that ID to create the smallest possible exception for the site’s own loopback and required REST routes. Avoid broad “allow all” rules and do not disable an entire firewall merely to make the warning disappear.

HTTP Basic Authentication on a staging or protected production site is a frequent complication. WordPress’s internal request may receive a login challenge instead of the page or REST response it expects. Configure an authenticated health-check path or coordinate with the host so the server can authenticate the self-request without exposing the site publicly.

5. Verify DNS, HTTPS, and the public hostname

A loopback uses the site’s public URL, not necessarily its private server address. Confirm that the hostname resolves from the server to the intended address, that IPv4 and IPv6 records both work when published, and that split-horizon DNS does not send internal requests to an unreachable destination.

For HTTPS failures, check certificate expiration, the certificate’s hostname, intermediate certificates, and the server’s TLS configuration. Make sure the WordPress and Site Address URLs use the canonical scheme and hostname. A redirect loop, an HTTP-to-HTTPS mismatch, or a certificate issued only for a different alias can prevent the self-request even while visitors appear to load the homepage.

Do not “fix” a certificate error by disabling TLS verification. Correct the certificate, DNS, or hostname configuration instead; bypassing verification weakens every HTTPS request made by the site.

6. Compare server and firewall logs

Run the Site Health test once, note its exact time, and immediately search the web-server access and error logs, PHP logs, reverse-proxy logs, and host-firewall events. Look for the request path, source address, response code, redirect chain, and rule or process that ended the connection.

  • An access-log entry with a 403 points toward an access-control rule rather than a DNS failure.
  • No access-log entry, combined with a timeout, suggests that DNS, routing, a proxy, or a firewall stopped the request before it reached the web server.
  • A 5xx entry should be paired with the PHP or application stack trace that explains why WordPress or the server failed.
  • A TLS error may occur before normal HTTP access logging, so inspect the proxy and TLS handshake logs as well.

After each change, rerun the test and record whether the response code, route, or error text changed. This prevents confusing a temporary network success with a durable fix.

7. Ask the hosting provider for server-side help

Escalate when plugin and theme isolation, WordPress configuration checks, and log review do not identify the cause. Give support the site’s hostname, the exact Site Health message, the affected endpoint, the timestamp and time zone, and the response code or cURL text. Ask specifically whether a server-side security rule, outbound firewall, DNS record, SSL configuration, reverse proxy, or HTTP authentication requirement blocks the site’s own URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request the relevant rule ID or log line rather than a generic statement that “the server is fine.” If the host manages a Web Application Firewall or ModSecurity, its staff may need to allow the loopback while keeping the rule active for external traffic. If the host cannot permit a self-request under the current architecture, ask which supported internal hostname or proxy configuration WordPress should use.

  • Review scheduled events and confirm that due WP-Cron tasks run instead of remaining overdue.
  • Open the block editor, load an existing post, and save a harmless draft. The editor requires REST API availability.
  • Check that automatic updates report normally and that update checks do not produce new HTTP errors.
  • Test REST-dependent integrations, webhooks, mobile clients, or custom applications that the site actually uses.
  • Recheck the REST API, loopback, background-update, and HTTP-request panels in Tools > Site Health after the server cache and proxy cache have had time to refresh.

If only the Site Health panel remains warning-free but cron, editing, or integrations still fail, treat those failures separately. A plugin conflict or application error can affect a dependent feature even after the basic loopback test passes.

Common scenarios and the safest response

The warning appeared after installing a security plugin

Deactivate the plugin briefly, verify the test, and inspect its REST, firewall, bot-protection, and allowlist settings. Re-enable it and create a narrow exception for the site’s own requests. If the plugin cannot distinguish trusted loopbacks from unwanted traffic, contact its maintainer or choose a configuration that preserves both protections and required WordPress operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The site works for visitors but Site Health fails

Visitor success does not prove that the server can reach its public hostname. Check internal DNS, IPv6 routing, outbound firewall policy, redirects, and TLS from the hosting environment. Compare the server’s request with a browser request; they may traverse different proxy rules or resolve to different addresses.

The error occurs only on a staging site

Staging sites often use password protection, temporary certificates, private DNS, or firewall rules that deliberately block external access. Decide whether loopbacks are required on that environment. If they are, provide the server with a valid certificate and a supported authenticated path; if they are not, document the expected warning rather than weakening production security controls.

The message says HTTP requests are blocked

Inspect WP_HTTP_BLOCK_EXTERNAL and WP_ACCESSIBLE_HOSTS first. Preserve the restriction when it is intentional and allow only the required hostnames. If the constants are absent or correct, continue with plugin, theme, firewall, DNS, and TLS checks; the wording does not prove that the constants caused the failure.

Prevent the warning from returning

  • Keep WordPress, the active theme, and plugins updated, especially components that modify REST or HTTP behavior.
  • Record intentional HTTP restrictions and firewall exceptions in the site’s deployment documentation.
  • Monitor WP-Cron, automatic-update results, and REST error logs instead of relying only on occasional Site Health visits.
  • Renew certificates before expiration and test every published hostname, including IPv6 when it is enabled.
  • When changing a proxy, DNS record, authentication layer, or firewall policy, run the loopback and REST tests immediately afterward.
  • Use staging to test security rules, but give staging a DNS and TLS setup that reflects production closely enough to expose loopback failures.

When the warning can be considered resolved

Consider the incident closed only when the original Site Health detail is gone, the relevant logs show a successful response from the expected endpoint, and the site’s dependent features work. The durable fix is the one that restores the required loopback or REST request while keeping deliberate access controls, HTTP restrictions, and firewall protections in place.
