If Minecraft Java Edition shows “Failed to verify username!” when you join a server, fully close Minecraft and its launcher, sign out of the Microsoft account in the launcher, sign back in, then relaunch the game and try again. If several players are affected at once, check authentication-service availability and the server’s connection and proxy configuration instead of repeatedly resetting individual accounts.
What the error means
“Failed to verify username!” is a server-side message associated with the server being unable to verify a joining player through the online-mode authentication flow. A related message is “Failed to login: Invalid session (Try restarting your game and the launcher)”. Neither message, by itself, proves that you entered the wrong password: the cause may be an expired or mismatched player session, the server’s inability to reach the session service, or a proxy/backend configuration problem.

Mojang’s issue tracker has historical reports of players encountering this wording, but its current page requires login and is not current troubleshooting guidance: Mojang issue tracker report.
Fix the player’s login session first
- Close Minecraft and exit the launcher completely.
- Reopen the launcher, sign out of the Microsoft account, then sign back in.
- Check that the selected Microsoft account owns Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Launch the game again and retry the server.
- If the error remains, note whether the launcher reports “Invalid session,” whether other players can join, and whether you recently changed accounts or signed in on another device.
This is the lowest-risk first step because it renews the launcher session. It may not fix a server-side connectivity issue or a proxy configuration problem.

Choose the next check by who is affected

These patterns help narrow the cause; they do not establish that a live outage is happening or guarantee a particular diagnosis.
If several players are affected, check the server
- Check current authentication-service status. Status can change, so use official channels at the time of troubleshooting rather than assuming there is an outage.
- Review server logs. Look for authentication-service timeouts or related connection errors around the time players were rejected.
- Check outbound network access. Confirm that the server can resolve DNS and reach the services it needs, and review firewall rules and hosting-provider restrictions. A hosting-provider guide identifies outbound HTTPS access to
sessionserver.mojang.comas one check, but verify that guidance against your server environment before changing network settings.
For a single player’s failure, begin with their launcher session rather than changing server authentication settings.

For a Velocity or BungeeCord network
A proxy network has separate proxy and backend roles, so a backend’s settings cannot be treated as a standalone server fix. Confirm that players connect through the proxy, the proxy handles account verification, the backend is configured to trust that proxy, and identity forwarding is set up for the exact proxy and server software versions in use. Protect the backend from direct public access. Setting an individual option without checking the whole topology can break identity handling or expose the backend.

On a public server, setting online-mode=false skips normal account verification. A connecting player may then claim another username, putting operator accounts and identity-based protections at risk. That is not a safe general-purpose workaround for a verification error.

A proxy backend is a distinct arrangement: the proxy performs authentication and the backend must be configured for that trusted setup and protected from direct access. Do not confuse a correctly secured proxy architecture with making a public server accept unauthenticated players.
