Minecraft igloo basements are hidden beneath the carpet inside some igloos in snowy biomes. Remove the carpet to check for a trapdoor; if one is present, it leads to a basement containing a villager, a zombie villager, a weakness potion, a golden apple and other starter supplies. Basements are optional rather than guaranteed, so an igloo without a trapdoor is simply the surface-only variant.

What an igloo basement is
An igloo is a small snow-block house that generates in snowy terrain. Its pale walls and roof can blend into the surrounding landscape, which makes the structure easy to walk past. The hidden feature is not an exterior hatch or a tunnel entrance in the snow. When an igloo has a basement, its entrance is a trapdoor concealed under the carpeted floor inside the house.

The basement is best understood as a built-in zombie-villager rescue room. It is supplied with the key items needed to attempt a cure, rather than being a conventional treasure vault. The official Minecraft description says that some igloos have a trapdoor leading to a secret basement, while Minecraft Help describes the room as containing a villager and a zombie villager.
How to find an igloo
Search the right terrain
Look in snowy biomes and scan for compact houses made from snow blocks. The structure and its surroundings can share almost the same color, especially where snow covers the ground, so search slowly rather than relying on a distant silhouette.

- Inspect irregular shapes in the snow instead of assuming every white mound is terrain.
- Once you see a small snow house, enter it and check the floor; the basement entrance is inside.
There is no edition-independent coordinate recipe, seed list or guaranteed command documented for finding an igloo. The reliable shared method is biome-based exploration followed by an interior inspection.
Recognize the structure
An igloo is a modest, enclosed snow house rather than a large fortress or village. Its camouflage is part of the challenge: the roof, walls and nearby ground may all appear snowy. If you find a small, regular-looking snow structure, treat it as a possible igloo and enter it instead of digging around its exterior.
Where the secret trapdoor is
Inspect the carpeted floor
- Enter the igloo through its normal doorway.
- Look at the carpet covering the floor.
- Use your edition’s normal block-breaking action to remove the carpet from the floor area.
- Check the exposed blocks for a trapdoor.
- If a trapdoor appears, use the normal interact action to open it and descend.
The important detail is the location: the trapdoor is beneath the carpet inside the igloo. Searching outside, mining under the walls or looking for a separate surface hatch will not reveal the intended entrance.
What a missing trapdoor means
Igloo basements are generated only sometimes. Minecraft Wiki’s 2025–2026 page crawl reports an approximate 50% basement rate, while Mojang’s official wording is simply that a trapdoor appears sometimes. Treat the percentage as a generation estimate, not a promise for every world or a guarantee that two editions will behave identically.
If you remove the carpet and find no trapdoor, that particular igloo is the surface-only variant. You do not need to excavate the surrounding snow in search of a second entrance. Move on and continue looking for another igloo if you specifically want the basement encounter.

What is inside the basement
Use the ladder or shaft to climb down when the trapdoor opens. The room normally combines a prison-like enclosure with the supplies for a cure.

The extra chest contents are not presented as a high-value loot cache. Mojang characterizes them as modest supplies such as coal, food, a gold nugget or an emerald. The distinctive reward is the opportunity to cure the zombie villager using items placed in the same room.
Secure the basement before touching the zombie villager
Do not begin the cure immediately after opening the trapdoor. First make the room safe enough for the process to finish. The zombie villager must be protected from sunlight and from hostile damage while it changes.
Make shade a priority
Keep the zombie villager in a shaded, enclosed area. The basement itself is underground, but opening or altering the structure can expose the prisoner to sunlight. Preserve overhead cover and avoid leaving the target in a place where daylight can reach it.
Control the immediate danger
Clear or contain threats before throwing the potion. A hostile attack during the curing wait can end the attempt, and the process can last up to five minutes. Keep the villager and zombie villager separated from anything that could damage them while you work.

Check the supplies before starting
Locate the brewing stand and verify that the potion is a splash Potion of Weakness rather than an item you cannot throw. Find the chest and confirm that the golden apple is available. The sequence depends on both items: weakness first, golden apple second.
How to cure the zombie villager
Step 1: Prepare the target
Stand where you can hit the zombie villager with a thrown potion without exposing yourself to unnecessary danger. Keep the target shaded and protected. If the room contains a barrier or prison section, use it to prevent the zombie villager from wandering away while you set up.
Step 2: Throw the Splash Potion of Weakness
Select the Splash Potion of Weakness from the brewing stand and throw it at the zombie villager. The potion must affect the zombie villager; throwing it against a wall or too far from the target does not advance the cure.
Step 3: Use the golden apple
Immediately after the weakness effect is applied, select the golden apple and use it on the affected zombie villager. The order matters. The golden apple is the activation item for the conversion, while the weakness potion is the required preceding effect.

The transformation can take up to five minutes. Keep the zombie villager protected from sunlight and hostile damage throughout that period. Do not treat the initial lack of an instant change as a failure; the cure is a timed process.

Step 5: Confirm the result
When the process completes, the zombie villager becomes a villager. You have then converted the basement encounter into a second villager rather than merely taking the chest contents. The original villager remains part of the room, so the cure can turn the structure into a useful starting point for building a larger population.
Should you leave, loot or cure?
Once you discover a basement, there are three practical choices. They differ in time, resource use and what you preserve.

If your priority is establishing villagers, curing is the distinctive option. If you only need immediate materials, looting is quicker. Leaving costs nothing but means the encounter provides no immediate benefit.

I found snowy terrain but no igloo
Snowy biomes can be large, and igloos can blend into them. Continue scanning for compact, regular snow houses rather than searching for a visible basement opening. There is no documented universal coordinate method that guarantees a structure, so ordinary exploration remains the dependable approach supported here.
The igloo has carpet but no trapdoor
That is a valid result. Basements are optional, and the absence of a trapdoor means the igloo is surface-only. Do not assume you broke the wrong block or that the entrance is outside; check the carpeted floor once, then move on if no trapdoor is present.

I cannot see the basement after opening the trapdoor
Use the shaft or ladder below the opening and descend into the underground room. The hidden area is beneath the igloo, not in a side chamber outside the structure.

The cure did not start
- Confirm that the potion was a splash Potion of Weakness and that it struck the zombie villager.
- Use the golden apple only after the weakness effect has been applied.
- Make sure the target is still the zombie villager and has not been killed or lost.
- Check that the room remains shaded and that hostile damage is not interrupting the attempt.
The zombie villager is taking a long time to change
The conversion is not instant. Mojang’s documented sequence can take up to five minutes, so keep the target protected for the full waiting period before deciding that it failed.
I used the golden apple before the potion
Repeat the sequence with the required order: Splash Potion of Weakness first, then golden apple. The cure is built around that combination, so having both items is not enough if they are applied in the wrong order.
I opened the room and the target is in danger
Stop the cure setup and secure the space before using either item. Preserve overhead cover, limit access by threats and keep the zombie villager from taking hostile damage during the timed conversion.
Java and Bedrock considerations
The shared structure and curing sequence are the safest basis for planning: search snowy biomes, remove the interior carpet, use the trapdoor when present, apply weakness and then the golden apple. Mechanics can differ between Java and Bedrock versions, and the available evidence does not establish one coordinate rule or command that works independently of edition. If a visual detail or interaction differs in your version, follow the controls and block behavior shown by that edition while preserving the documented item order.

- Search snowy biomes for a small snow-block house.
- Enter the igloo instead of digging around its exterior.
- Remove the carpet and inspect the floor for a trapdoor.
- If there is no trapdoor, treat the structure as surface-only.
- If a trapdoor exists, descend the ladder or shaft.
- Locate the brewing stand, chest, villager and zombie villager.
- Keep the basement shaded and protect both villagers from hostile damage.
- Throw the Splash Potion of Weakness at the zombie villager.
- Use the golden apple on the affected target.
- Wait up to five minutes for the conversion to finish.
What the igloo is really rewarding
An igloo basement is valuable because it compresses a difficult early-game task into one discoverable room. It supplies the weakness potion and golden apple, provides a zombie villager ready for treatment and places a regular villager nearby. The chest’s additional materials are modest, so the encounter’s main value is the curing opportunity rather than rare treasure.
Finding no basement is not a hidden failure state. It means the world generated the other igloo variant. Finding one, by contrast, gives you a choice: preserve the room for later, take its starter supplies or spend those supplies to create another villager. The correct decision depends on whether your immediate goal is exploration, materials or population growth.
