To install a Space Engineers dedicated server without installing the game client, use SteamCMD on a Windows computer, download app ID 298740, then launch SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. The basic command is:

SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line Steam client. It downloads and updates the dedicated-server package without installing the normal Space Engineers game client or opening the Steam desktop application. The dedicated-server package has the official Steam application ID 298740.
Keen Software House describes dedicated servers as allowing players to connect to a third-party host instead of relying on a player-hosted peer-to-peer session. Your Windows computer becomes that host: it runs the simulation, stores the world, accepts network connections and remains available while players join.

Steam account and game-license requirements
The official dedicated-server guide states that a licensed Steam account is needed to obtain the server files. SteamCMD can use the anonymous login shown below for the download command. Once the files have been obtained, the server computer does not need an additional Space Engineers game license. This is useful for a spare desktop or rented Windows machine that will run only the server process.
Hardware, Windows and software prerequisites
Use a Windows PC with a stable network connection. Administrator rights are not required for an ordinary foreground server, but they are required when you install or run the server as a Windows service. Install the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 or newer and the Visual C++ Redistributable packages for 2013 and 2017 before troubleshooting startup failures.
Keen Software House’s current official guide lists the following capacity guidance. It does not promise a universal player count for either specification; actual performance varies with world size, scripts, mods, simulation load and the number of active players.

Treat them as starting points, not a guaranteed concurrency rating. Leave additional memory and CPU headroom for Windows, backups, monitoring and any other services on the machine.

Install SteamCMD and download the dedicated server
- Download and extract SteamCMD using Valve’s official SteamCMD documentation. Put it in a directory you can write to, such as a dedicated tools folder, rather than inside a protected Windows directory.
- Create an empty directory for the server files. For example, create a folder named
SpaceEngineersServeron a drive with enough free storage. The folder you choose becomes the destination for the executable and supporting files. - Open Command Prompt and change to the directory containing
steamcmd.exe. If the path contains spaces, quote it when usingcd. - Run the download command, replacing only the install-folder path:
steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir <server-folder> +app_update 298740 +quit+force_install_dir selects where SteamCMD writes the dedicated-server files. +app_update 298740 downloads the Space Engineers Dedicated Server package, and +quit closes SteamCMD when the update finishes. A successful run leaves SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe in the selected server directory.
Choosing a Windows path
Use a short, permanent path on a local disk, such as C:SpaceEngineersServer or D:GameServersSpaceEngineers. Avoid moving the directory after you create worlds unless you also update the path used to launch the executable. Keep the SteamCMD program and the downloaded server files in separate folders so later SteamCMD updates cannot accidentally overwrite scripts or backups you place beside the server.
Updating an existing installation
Run the same SteamCMD command whenever you want to check for a newer dedicated-server build. Stop the running server first, let SteamCMD finish, then start the server again. Do not update files while the executable is actively writing a world save.
Start the server for the first time
- Open the downloaded server directory and run
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. - For a foreground server, select Local/Console.
- Choose Continue to server configuration.
- Enter a server name and select or create a world name.
- Review the settings, then choose Save & start.
The Local/Console mode keeps the server visible in its own window, which is the simplest setup for a first launch. It also makes console messages and startup errors immediately visible. Keep that window open while testing a local connection.

Listen address and port
The default listen IP is 0.0.0.0. That value means the process listens on all available network interfaces and works in most installations. Use the configuration tool’s Listen IP and Port fields instead of guessing an address. The default listen port is 27016/UDP.
Configure an Internet-facing server
Players on the same home network can usually connect using the server PC’s private LAN address. Players outside that network need a reachable public address, a router rule and a firewall rule.
- Give the server PC a stable private address through your router’s DHCP reservation or an equivalent Windows network configuration. A changing private address can invalidate a port-forward rule.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, create a rule for UDP 27016 directed to the server PC’s private address.
- If you changed the port in the Space Engineers configuration tool, forward that replacement UDP port instead of 27016.
- Create or approve an inbound Windows Defender Firewall rule for the same UDP port. If Windows prompts about network access when the executable first starts, allow it on the network profile you actually use.
- Give players the server’s current public IP address and port, or use a DNS name that you maintain. The official guide recommends a static public IP for public hosting.
Without a static public IP, you can still host on a LAN. Players outside the LAN cannot connect directly unless you have another way to keep a current public address and route traffic to the server. Carrier-grade NAT or an ISP-level firewall can also prevent inbound connections even when your local router rule is correct.
How to test connectivity
First test from another computer on the same LAN. If that works, test from a device using a different Internet connection, such as a phone hotspot. A successful LAN test proves the server is running but does not prove that the router and ISP permit Internet traffic. If remote players cannot see or join the server, verify the public address, the UDP protocol, the forwarded destination address, the Windows firewall rule and whether the ISP places your connection behind carrier-grade NAT.

Run the server as a Windows service
Service mode lets Windows start an instance without keeping a user logged in and can restart it after a failure. Administrator rights are required.
- Run
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exeas administrator. - Choose Add new instance.
- Enter a unique system-wide service name.
- Select the new instance and configure its world, network values and other settings.
- Start the service and verify that the expected server process is listening on its configured port.
Each server instance needs its own port. One port can be used by only one instance, so two services cannot both listen on UDP 27016. Give additional instances different UDP ports and create matching router and firewall rules if they must be reachable from the Internet.

Use Local/Console while building or troubleshooting a world because the visible console makes errors easy to read. Move to service mode after the configuration is stable and you have tested stopping, starting and recovering the instance.
World saves and moving an existing game
The dedicated server loads worlds from one of these Windows locations, depending on how it is configured:

To move a world created in the normal game, copy it from AppDataRoamingSpaceEngineers into the corresponding dedicated-server location. Preserve the world folder structure and copy the complete save rather than individual files. Stop the server before copying so no save file is being changed.

- Stop the dedicated server and wait for the process to exit.
- Make a dated backup of the destination save directory.
- Locate the world under the normal game’s
AppDataRoamingSpaceEngineersfolder. - Copy the entire world folder into the dedicated-server save location.
- Start
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe, open server configuration and select the copied world. - Join locally first and confirm inventories, grids, scripts and mods before opening the server to other players.
Configuration areas you can manage
The dedicated-server configuration interface exposes the major controls needed to operate a world:
- Server settings: name, gameplay rules and player limits.
- Plugins: plugin-related options when your installation uses them.
- Remote client: remote administration settings.
- Console output: visibility and logging behavior.
- World selection: choosing or changing the loaded save.
- Users: administrators and permitted players.
- Mods: workshop content assigned to the world.
- Message of the day: text shown to joining players.
- Maintenance: operational and update controls.
Change one group of settings at a time and restart when the interface requests it. Keep a written record of the selected port, save path, service name and administrator accounts so recovery does not depend on one person’s memory.
Useful command-line options
The official guide documents these launch options:

Use the configuration tool’s Listen IP and Port fields for normal administration. Command-line overrides are most useful when a service wrapper or a separate start script must define a repeatable instance configuration.
Updates, backups and clean shutdowns
Automatic updates
Auto-update is supported while the dedicated-server GUI is running. If you operate without the GUI, create your own update-and-restart script or combine SteamCMD with Windows Service recovery and Task Scheduler checks. Schedule updates during a maintenance window, announce the interruption to players and keep a backup before applying a new build.

Use the documented command below to request a graceful stop:
taskkill /IM SpaceEngineersDedicated.exeThis allows the process to save and close normally. Adding /f forces termination and can kill the process without saving, so reserve it for a genuinely hung process after accepting the risk of losing the latest changes.

- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server gracefully.

Troubleshooting by symptom
SteamCMD finishes but no executable appears
- Confirm that the command used app ID
298740, not the app ID for the regular game. - Check the path supplied to
+force_install_dirand inspect that exact folder. - Run SteamCMD again and let
+app_update 298740complete without closing the window early. - Verify that the account or anonymous session was allowed to download the package and that the disk has free space.
The executable will not start
- Install or repair .NET Framework 4.8 or newer.
- Install the Visual C++ Redistributable 2013 and 2017 packages.
- Run the executable from the downloaded server directory so its supporting files are found.
- Try Local/Console first to expose an error message before configuring service mode.
Players on the LAN can join, but Internet players cannot
- Confirm that the router forwards UDP, not only TCP, to the server’s current private address.
- Confirm that Windows Firewall permits inbound UDP on the configured port.
- Check whether the server port was changed from 27016 and update every rule accordingly.
- Verify the public IP from outside the home network and check for carrier-grade NAT or an ISP inbound block.
The server loads the wrong world or a world is missing
- Stop the process before copying saves.
- Check both documented dedicated-server locations:
AppDataRoamingSpaceEngineersDedicatedandProgramDataSpaceEngineersDedicated. - For a migrated world, ensure the complete folder was copied from
AppDataRoamingSpaceEngineers. - Use the configuration interface’s world-selection control and restart after selecting the intended save.
A service will not start or two servers conflict
- Run service setup and management with administrator rights.
- Confirm that the service name is unique across the Windows machine.
- Ensure every instance has a different port; a single port cannot serve two instances.
- Check the service’s configured data path and account permissions before changing the world files.
A practical launch checklist
- Windows host meets the current guide’s CPU, core, memory and bandwidth guidance.
- .NET 4.8 or newer and Visual C++ Redistributables 2013 and 2017 are installed.
- SteamCMD downloaded app ID 298740 into a permanent server directory.
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exestarts in Local/Console mode.- Server name, world and administrator users are configured.
- Listen IP is appropriate and the selected UDP port is recorded.
- LAN join test succeeds before Internet exposure.
- Router and Windows Firewall both allow the configured UDP port.
- World backups and a graceful-stop procedure have been tested.
- Only after testing: move to service mode and configure automatic update or recovery checks.
