Illusioner at a glance
The Illusioner is a bow-wielding illager that remains unused by ordinary world generation. The November 2025 Minecraft Wiki content mirror lists the following core values:
| Property | What is established |
|---|---|
| Edition | Java Edition; Bedrock parity is not established by the available command documentation. |
| World availability | Command- or data-pack-created; not a normal survival spawn. |
| Health | 32 health points, equal to 16 hearts (Minecraft Wiki content mirror, November 2025 snapshot). |
| Weapon | Bow when summoned in its normal combat state. |
| Ranged attack | One arrow every second. |
| Bow damage | 2–5 health points on Easy or Normal and 3–5 on Hard (Minecraft Wiki content mirror, November 2025 snapshot). |
| Special effects | Blindness and an Invisibility-based duplicate illusion. |
| Player or tamed-wolf reward | 5 experience orbs for a kill (Minecraft Wiki content mirror, November 2025 snapshot). |
“Unused” means that the mob exists and has programmed behavior, but the game does not place it in the ordinary structures, events, or biome spawning systems that generate active survival content.

How to spawn an Illusioner
Use a Java Edition world in which you can execute commands, then enter the summon command in chat or through another command-capable interface.
- Open chat and place the cursor in the command field.
- Enter
/summon minecraft:illusioner. - Run the command. The Illusioner appears at the command’s execution location and uses its normal armed behavior.
The entity identifier is minecraft:illusioner. If the command is rejected, check the edition first: the available Microsoft Bedrock command reference does not document an Illusioner entity, so a Java command should not be treated as proof of Bedrock support.
Summon an unarmed, passive test entity
For a harmless inspection, use:
/summon minecraft:illusioner ~ ~ ~ {}
The three tildes mean the current execution position. The empty compound leaves the Illusioner without a bow; an unarmed Illusioner is passive. This is useful when you want to inspect its model without immediately triggering ranged combat. It is not the same test as the normal armed summon.
Data packs and other creation methods
A data pack can also create an Illusioner. The important distinction is that both methods are deliberate creation methods, not natural spawning. There is no Illusioner spawn egg in the Creative inventory.
Where Illusioners do not spawn
There is no biome, structure, or survival event that should be searched for an Illusioner. They do not naturally appear in:
- Biomes or ordinary hostile-mob spawning areas
- Monster spawners
- Woodland mansions
- Pillager outposts
- Raids
- Patrols
- Other world-generated structures
This is why exploring more territory, waiting through additional nights, or searching an outpost will not produce one. If an Illusioner is present in a test world, a command, data pack, or another deliberate creation method is involved.

How its combat behavior works
An armed Illusioner is a ranged opponent rather than a melee attacker. It fires one arrow every second, strafes while fighting, and attempts to hold a consistent distance from its target. Those three behaviors make it harder to treat like a stationary archer: it keeps moving laterally and does not simply stand in one place while shooting.
Valid targets
The Illusioner can attack players, adult villagers, iron golems, and wandering traders in its engagement area. Its target list therefore includes both hostile encounters involving a player and several nearby civilian or defensive entities.
Arrow damage
The November 2025 Minecraft Wiki content mirror reports 2–5 health points of bow damage on Easy and Normal, and 3–5 health points on Hard. These are damage ranges, not a guaranteed fixed value for every arrow. The same source reports the one-arrow-per-second firing cadence.
What strafing changes
Because the mob moves sideways and tries to preserve distance, a player who focuses only on the bow may misread its position. Its movement is part of the programmed combat pattern, not evidence that several entities are present. The false duplicates described below copy this movement visually, which is why the encounter can become confusing after the illusion begins.

Blindness: when it happens and what it looks like
On a newly engaged player, the Illusioner can cast Blindness when the regional difficulty is above 2. The effect lasts 20 seconds. The cast is signaled by raised arms, a low-pitched sound, and black particles.
The condition matters: “regional difficulty above 2” is not the same as saying that every player in every world is blinded. If the regional difficulty does not exceed 2, this particular cast is not available under the documented rule. The effect is tied to newly engaging a player rather than being described as a spell repeated on every arrow.

Recognizing the cast
- Raised arms: the Illusioner visibly lifts its arms while casting.
- Low-pitched sound: an audio cue accompanies the cast.
- Black particles: particles appear as the spell is used.
- Duration: the reported Blindness duration is 20 seconds (Minecraft Wiki content mirror, November 2025 snapshot).
These cues are especially useful in a test arena because they let you distinguish the status-effect cast from ordinary bow fire before the duplicate illusion appears.
Invisibility and the four false duplicates
During combat, the Illusioner can apply Invisibility for 60 seconds and create four visual duplicates. The result is one real Illusioner plus four decoys on screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What the duplicates copy
The decoys imitate the original mob’s facing and movement. They are designed to look like possible attackers, so watching for a copy that turns or strafes differently is not a reliable shortcut: the visual behavior is intentionally synchronized.
What the duplicates cannot do
Only the original Illusioner can shoot and take damage. The four copies are visual decoys, not additional combat entities. Consequently, seeing five figures does not mean that five bows are firing or that all five need to be defeated.
When the illusion ends
The duplicates disappear when the Invisibility effect ends. The documented duration is 60 seconds, and the same effect is the one associated with creating the four copies (Minecraft Wiki content mirror, November 2025 snapshot).
Practical way to identify the real mob
Do not count arrows or rely on the number of visible figures. The defining tests are interaction-based: the original is the only figure that can shoot and the only figure that can take damage. The duplicates’ purpose is visual misdirection, not extra health pools.

A controlled testing procedure
A small, clearly marked test area makes each mechanic easier to observe and prevents an unarmed demonstration from being confused with a combat demonstration.
- Prepare a Java Edition test location. Stand where the summon location is visible and where you can observe the mob without losing track of it.
- Test the passive state first. Run
/summon minecraft:illusioner ~ ~ ~ {}. Confirm that the unarmed entity does not exhibit the normal bow attack. - Remove visual confusion. Record what one Illusioner looks like while it is moving before you test the duplicate ability. The decoys later copy the original’s facing and movement.
- Run the armed summon separately. Use
/summon minecraft:illusionerso the normal bow-equipped behavior can be observed without the passive test entity being part of the encounter. - Observe the opening engagement. Watch for the raised-arm animation, low sound, and black particles. The Blindness condition applies to a newly engaged player only when regional difficulty is above 2.
- Measure the combat pattern qualitatively. Note the one-arrow-per-second cadence, sideways movement, and attempt to maintain distance. These are the core behaviors that distinguish the encounter from a stationary ranged mob.
- Watch for the illusion. When Invisibility and the duplicate effect occur, look for four copies. Test which figure can shoot and which one can take damage rather than assuming every visible figure is real.
- Wait through the effect. The duplicates should disappear when the 60-second Invisibility effect ends.
This sequence separates spawning, equipment, targeting, status effects, and the illusion itself. It also explains why a passive command test cannot be used to judge the hostile mob’s full behavior.
Health, experience, and drops
The Illusioner’s 32 health points equal 16 hearts, according to the November 2025 Minecraft Wiki content mirror. Its reported bow damage is difficulty-dependent, as shown earlier, so a test that records only one hit should not be generalized into a fixed damage value.

|---|---|
| Experience | 5 XP orbs when killed by a player or a tamed wolf (Minecraft Wiki content mirror, November 2025 snapshot). |
| Equipment drop chance | 8.5% base chance for naturally spawned equipment (Minecraft Wiki content mirror, November 2025 snapshot). |
The equipment figure is specifically qualified for naturally spawned equipment. It should not be read as a promise that every command-summoned Illusioner drops a bow or other equipment.

This is a Java-focused guide. The available Microsoft Bedrock command reference documents command categories and directs users to /help for syntax, but it does not document an Illusioner entity. That evidence does not establish Bedrock parity.
In practice, a Java summon command should not be copied into Bedrock and treated as a supported feature. If your world is Bedrock Edition, use the in-game command help to check whether the entity identifier exists in your specific version. The documented evidence here confirms the Java command and Java mechanics, not an equivalent Bedrock implementation.

Troubleshooting common Illusioner tests
The summon command is rejected
First verify that the world is running Java Edition and that you are allowed to execute commands. Then check the identifier exactly: minecraft:illusioner. The documented command is not a general Bedrock command.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Illusioner stands there and does nothing
If you used /summon minecraft:illusioner ~ ~ ~ {}, the result is expected: the empty data compound creates an unarmed, passive test entity. Use the normal summon command for the bow-equipped hostile state.
You cannot find one in a mansion, outpost, raid, or patrol
That search is expected to fail. Illusioners do not naturally generate in those structures or events, and they have no Creative spawn egg.
Blindness never appears
The documented cast requires a newly engaged player and regional difficulty above 2. It is not described as an effect applied by every attack, so the absence of Blindness on later arrows does not by itself indicate a broken entity.
There are several Illusioners, but only one seems dangerous
That is the intended duplicate behavior. Four copies are visual decoys; only the original can shoot and take damage. The copies disappear when the 60-second Invisibility effect ends.
The mob seems to vanish during combat
Invisibility is part of the programmed illusion. Track the attack source rather than assuming the visible copies are separate mobs; the decoys imitate the original’s facing and movement.
What the Illusioner is—and is not
The Illusioner is best understood as a hidden Java combat encounter for commands, data packs, and controlled experiments. It combines ordinary ranged pressure—one arrow each second and distance-keeping strafing—with two disruptive mechanics: a conditional 20-second Blindness cast and a 60-second Invisibility effect that produces four non-interactive copies.
It is not a rare biome discovery, a raid variant, or a mob that can be collected from Creative mode. To test it reliably, summon the armed form directly, use the empty-compound command only when you want a passive specimen, and treat the Bedrock version as unconfirmed rather than assuming Java behavior carries over.
