RollCage 2022 Race DS is a Space Engineers scenario, not a single mod file. A working dedicated server needs both the scenario’s mod files and a save created from its Mission01 world. On a PC-only server you can usually let the server obtain Workshop content; on a PC/console crossplay server, download the Workshop item on a PC and upload it manually. The final step is correcting the XML paths in Sandbox.sbc so they point to the server’s folders rather than the downloader’s Windows profile.

What you are installing
The RollCage package contains a scenario definition, its supporting assets and a playable world. Space Engineers Dedicated Server (SEDS) does not turn a scenario into a running session merely because its Workshop item is present. The server must be able to find:

Miss any one of those pieces and the usual symptoms are an empty world list, a load failure, missing-text errors or a server that starts on a different world.
Requirements and decisions before you begin
Windows SEDS prerequisites
Install Space Engineers Dedicated Server on Windows through Steam’s Tools library or through SteamCMD. The current dedicated-server guidance lists .NET Framework 4.8 and the Visual C++ redistributable among the prerequisites. It lists 6 GB of RAM as the minimum baseline and 10 GB as the recommended baseline for a dedicated server. Those figures are general SEDS guidance, not a RollCage-specific performance guarantee; actual needs vary with the world, simulation load and player activity.

Keep a full copy of the server instance, including its saves and configuration files, before editing XML. A rollback is much faster than reconstructing a damaged save or configuration by hand.
Choose PC-only or crossplay

A dedicated server runs one world at a time. Decide which save will be active before you start testing, and do not assume that uploading a second world automatically switches the running session.
Find and download the RollCage Workshop files
1. Subscribe on a Windows PC
In Steam, subscribe to the RollCage 2022 Race DS scenario. The installation guide identifies its Workshop item with ID 3048708110. Let Steam finish downloading the item before copying anything. If Steam shows an update in progress, wait for it to complete so the local copy is internally consistent.
Steam stores Workshop content in a numbered directory. Locate the folder for item 3048708110, then open it and verify that you are looking at the scenario’s files rather than an empty parent directory. Do not copy only a shortcut, preview image or Steam metadata file.
2. Preserve the downloaded copy
Keep the original download in a separate working folder while preparing the server upload. This gives you a clean source if an FTP transfer is interrupted or if you need to compare a later update with the version currently running. Do not edit the Workshop copy in place; make server-side changes only in the uploaded save and configuration files.
Install the scenario under Mods
1. Create the destination
In the server instance’s base directory, create this folder if it does not already exist:
ModsRollCage 2022 Race DSThe base directory is the directory that contains the instance’s Mods and Saves folders. On a self-hosted installation it may be under the SEDS data location; on managed hosting it is the instance root exposed by the host’s file manager or FTP account.

2. Upload the contents, not an extra nesting level
Copy the contents of the downloaded Workshop item into ModsRollCage 2022 Race DS. Check the resulting tree before starting the server. A common mistake is creating ModsRollCage 2022 Race DS3048708110… or ModsRollCage 2022 Race DSRollCage 2022 Race DS…; either layout leaves the files one directory deeper than the configuration expects.
Use the file manager’s recursive upload option or an FTP/SFTP client that preserves subdirectories. Compare file counts and folder names between the local Workshop copy and the server copy. The server needs the complete package, including the localization directory.
Create the RollCage save from Mission01
1. Make the save directory
Create a save directory beside Mods:
SavesRollCage 2022 Race DSYou may choose a different folder name, but decide it now. The name is significant because the session configuration can refer to it exactly.

From the downloaded scenario, open:
ScenariosRollCage 2022 Race DSWorldsMission01Upload the contents of Mission01 into SavesRollCage 2022 Race DS. Do not put the Mission01 directory itself inside the save unless you also change every configuration reference to that additional level. The save directory should directly contain files such as Sandbox.sbc and, where supplied, Sandbox_config.sbc, along with the other world files.
3. Check the save before editing
- Confirm that
Sandbox.sbcopens as plain XML text and is not zero bytes. - Confirm that
Sandbox_config.sbcis present if it was included in the Mission01 package. - Make sure the save folder is under the instance’s active
Savesdirectory, not under the game’s client profile on the PC used for downloading. - Keep the copied files writable by the Windows account running SEDS or by the hosting service’s server process.
Correct the paths in Sandbox.sbc
Why this edit is mandatory
The downloaded scenario can contain paths from the PC that obtained it, often under a user’s local Steam or AppData area. Those paths do not exist on the dedicated server. Open the server copy of Sandbox.sbc in a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Work on a backup copy first.
Update CampaignPaths
Find the <CampaignPaths> section. Replace the old computer-specific path before Mods with the server’s real base path. Update both references required by the scenario: the RollCage scenario location and its LocalizationCommon.sbl file.
The following illustrates the form of the replacement. The drive and instance name are examples; use your own server path while keeping the folder names and XML structure already present in your file:

</CampaignPaths>Do not remove the XML escaping, quotation marks or sibling entries that are unrelated to RollCage. If your file uses a different element layout, edit the existing values rather than pasting the example wholesale.
Update LocalModFolder
In the same file, find <LocalModFolder> and set it to the server’s RollCage mod directory. For the example path above, the value would be:
<LocalModFolder>D:SEDSInstance1ModsRollCage 2022 Race DS</LocalModFolder>The important rule is consistency: CampaignPaths, LocalModFolder, the actual Mods folder and the uploaded localization file must all describe the same server filesystem. A path that points back to the downloader’s profile will prevent the scenario from loading even when every file was uploaded correctly.
Use the server’s actual base path
If you are unsure which directory SEDS treats as its base, inspect the server’s existing session data, including LastSession.sbl, and compare it with the folders visible in the instance. Copy the path exactly, including drive letter, capitalization where the host requires it, spaces and the instance subdirectory. Avoid mapped drives or desktop shortcuts that are unavailable to a service account.

Make SessionName match a renamed save
If you kept the save directory name RollCage 2022 Race DS, no rename is needed. If you used another name, open that save’s Sandbox_config.sbc and change <SessionName> so its value exactly equals the save-folder name.
<SessionName>My RollCage Server</SessionName>For this example, the directory must be SavesMy RollCage Server. Differences in spaces, punctuation or capitalization can cause the server to look for a different session. Change the folder and the XML together, then save both files before launching SEDS.
Select RollCage as the active world and start SEDS
- Stop the server completely if it is running. Editing a live save while SEDS is writing it can overwrite your changes.
- Use the dedicated-server configuration interface or host control panel to select the RollCage save as the instance’s active session.
- Confirm that the selected save points to the directory containing the edited
Sandbox.sbcand, when applicable, the matchingSandbox_config.sbc. - Start SEDS and wait for world initialization to finish before connecting a client.
- Watch the startup log for the save name, scenario paths, missing-file messages and mod-load errors.
The first launch can take longer while the server indexes files. A successful start should leave the RollCage world running rather than opening a generic empty session. Connect with a test account before inviting players and verify that the race area, expected starting position and scenario text load correctly.

Crossplay-specific procedure
Crossplay changes content delivery, not the underlying save structure. A crossplay server cannot download Steam Workshop content directly. The reliable workflow is therefore:
- Subscribe to item
3048708110on a Windows PC with Steam. - Wait for the complete Workshop download.
- Upload the scenario contents into
ModsRollCage 2022 Race DSon the server. - Upload the Mission01 world contents into
SavesRollCage 2022 Race DS, or your chosen save-folder name. - Edit
Sandbox.sbcso every scenario and localization path uses the server filesystem. - Set
SessionNameinSandbox_config.sbcwhen the save folder was renamed. - Select that save as the active session and restart the server.
Do not rely on a Workshop ID entered in a crossplay host panel as a substitute for the upload. The server may accept the ID while still lacking the files required by the console-compatible session.
PC-only installation differences
On a PC-only server, the server’s Workshop controls can generally retrieve subscribed content. That can eliminate the manual copy into Mods, but it does not eliminate the save step: RollCage remains a scenario/world package, so the corresponding Mission01 files must exist in the active save. If the server’s automatic Workshop process creates a different mod directory, use that actual directory in CampaignPaths and LocalModFolder rather than assuming the manual path.
For repeatable deployments, many administrators still download and stage the files themselves, because a staged copy makes versioning, backups and rollback easier. Stop SEDS before replacing a scenario and test the updated save privately before switching the public instance.
Validation checklist before inviting players
- Server resources: Windows prerequisites are installed and the machine meets the 6 GB minimum or, preferably, the 10 GB recommended SEDS baseline.
- Mod location: The complete RollCage package is directly under
ModsRollCage 2022 Race DS, without an extra numbered or duplicate folder layer. - Save location: Mission01 contents are directly under the chosen folder in
Saves. - XML paths:
CampaignPathscontains the server’s scenario andLocalizationCommon.sblpaths;LocalModFolderpoints to the same mod directory. - Name consistency: A renamed save has the identical value in
Sandbox_config.sbcunderSessionName. - Active session: The control panel or SEDS configuration selects the RollCage save, not a previous test world.
- Logs: Startup completes without missing-file, invalid-path or failed-mod errors.
- Backup: The original save and the last known-good configuration are stored outside the live instance.
Troubleshoot failures by symptom
The server starts but RollCage is not listed
Check that the Mission01 files were copied into the active Saves directory and not left inside the local Workshop download. Verify that the host panel is pointing at the same instance whose files you edited. If you renamed the directory, compare its spelling with SessionName character for character.
The server reports a missing mod or scenario file
Inspect the directory depth first. The files should be inside ModsRollCage 2022 Race DS, not one level below it. Then open Sandbox.sbc and remove any remaining path segment that belongs to the downloading PC. Confirm that the server account can read the directory and that the upload did not skip hidden or nested files.
Localization or text is missing
Verify that the localization directory was uploaded with the scenario and that the CampaignPaths entry for LocalizationCommon.sbl points to the server copy. A correct mod-folder path does not compensate for a missing or stale localization path.

The server loads a different world
Because SEDS runs one world at a time, an older save may still be selected as the active session. Stop the instance, select the RollCage save explicitly, and start again. Check the startup log for the session name that was actually opened.

Crossplay clients cannot join
Confirm that the server is configured for crossplay and that all Workshop files were uploaded manually. A console-compatible session cannot fetch the Steam item on demand. Recheck the mod and save directories, then restart after correcting the XML paths. If the failure persists, compare the current Workshop download with the server copy and inspect the dedicated-server logs for the first reported missing file rather than the final connection error.
Startup fails after an update
Restore the last known-good backup, confirm that the previous version starts, then stage the new Workshop files separately. Replace the live copy only after checking the updated Sandbox.sbc and localization path. The available guidance does not establish a compatibility matrix for every Space Engineers build, so treat a game update or scenario update as a change that requires a test launch.
Backups, updates and routine administration
Back up before every XML or content change
Copy the entire active save and the server configuration before editing. Include Sandbox.sbc, Sandbox_config.sbc, the world files and any host-panel configuration that selects the session. Keep at least one backup outside the live server directory so a failed startup cannot overwrite both copies.
Updating RollCage on a crossplay server
- Stop the server and record the currently running version and save name.
- Back up the live
Modsdirectory and save. - Let Steam download the updated Workshop item on a PC.
- Upload the replacement scenario files, preserving the expected folder structure.
- Recheck
CampaignPaths,LocalModFolderandSessionName; an update can overwrite or reintroduce local paths. - Start the server and read the logs through world initialization before allowing public connections.
If the new files fail, restore the known-good mod and save rather than repeatedly editing a partially updated directory.

A managed host can reduce Windows maintenance and provide restart controls, backups and a file manager, but it does not remove the RollCage requirements. For crossplay, the host must allow manual upload into both Mods and Saves, and it must expose the server logs. A self-hosted SEDS installation offers direct filesystem and log access but leaves operating-system updates, permissions, backups and restarts to you. Choose the route that gives you reliable control over those tasks rather than choosing solely on the presence of a one-click Workshop field.
