The Minecraft Java Edition message Internal Exception: java.io.IOException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host means the connection to a multiplayer server was closed; it does not identify why. There is no proven universal workaround. Start by checking whether the disconnect is limited to one server, one player, or one network, then investigate the part of the connection that pattern points to.
What the error means
Minecraft displays this message when communication with a remote server is interrupted. The wording alone cannot tell you whether the cause is on your computer, in a network setting or device, or on the server. Mojang’s legacy issue-tracker record for the matching symptom describes those as possible sources and classifies it as a technical-support issue rather than a Minecraft bug: MC-38565. That older record is useful for framing the problem, but it is not a current, platform-specific troubleshooting manual.

Work through the problem by narrowing its scope

Record when and where it happens
Write down the exact message, your Minecraft edition and version, the server, and whether you are disconnected immediately, after idling, or after playing for a while. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether a test made a difference.

Try another trusted server
If the error appears on only one server, tell its owner or administrator when it happened and share the exact message and your game version. A single server-support report describes the error recurring for players other than the host on a third-party-hosted vanilla server despite the original poster trying client-side changes; that is an example, not evidence that hosting is usually responsible. Check whether other players are disconnected too
If several players lose connection at about the same time, ask the server owner to investigate the server and any network conditions shared by those players. This pattern makes a shared cause worth checking; it does not prove one. If only you are affected on that server, give the owner the time, exact error, game version, and results of your other-server or other-network tests so they can compare them with server logs and connection conditions.

Review computer-side connection changes
If the issue follows you across servers but happens only on one computer, consider recent changes to firewall rules, security software, a VPN or proxy, or other network settings. Check that Minecraft’s Java process is permitted to connect. Test only a relevant setting, change one item at a time, and restore protection after testing. The tracker identifies a program or network setting as possible causes, but does not provide a current allow-list procedure for every operating system or security product.

Compare with another network, if practical
A temporary test on another trusted connection, such as a phone hotspot, can help determine whether the result changes with your usual network. A difference points toward the original network path, but does not identify a particular router, internet provider, or configuration fault. Treat hotspot suggestions in player discussions as diagnostic anecdotes, not an official fix.

What past reports can—and cannot—tell you
Player reports show why it is unwise to treat a familiar-sounding fix as guaranteed. A 2018 server-support thread lists attempts such as Java updates, reinstalling, changing RAM, rolling back a version, and switching networks; it does not establish that those steps solve the problem. In a separate post edited July 28, 2020, a player reported that restarting, reinstalling, updating Java, trying another computer, flushing DNS, and using a modded read-timeout argument had not solved their case at that time: “Disconnecting shortly after joining”.

Do not copy -Dfml.readTimeout=900 as a general fix. It was mentioned in old, mod-specific troubleshooting context and may be irrelevant or harmful in other setups. Likewise, the available evidence does not establish that allocating more memory, changing DNS, installing a VPN, forwarding ports, buying networking equipment, or switching server hosts will resolve this symptom.
If the disconnect is from a Realm
A Realm-related report exists in Mojang’s legacy tracker, but it was marked resolved as a duplicate and the captured record shows no fix version. It confirms that the symptom was reported in a Realm context; it does not document a fix or establish current Realm service status. See MC-158430. Apply the same scope checks: note whether other players are affected, whether another server works, and whether a different network changes the result. Share those details with the relevant server or Realm support contact.
