To make a jack o’Lantern in Minecraft, carve a pumpkin with shears, then combine the carved pumpkin with one torch in a crafting grid. What a jack o’Lantern does
A jack o’Lantern is both a decorative block and a functional light source. The Minecraft Wiki reference lists its luminosity as light level 15, the highest possible light level in the game. That makes it suitable anywhere you need maximum illumination rather than a dim accent.

Its most distinctive property is that it remains visibly lit underwater. Minecraft’s official article specifically describes jack o’Lanterns glowing brightly even under water. They are therefore useful for submerged bases, underwater entrances, tunnels, glass rooms and paths where ordinary-looking lighting can be difficult to place.
The block also melts snow and ice around it. In a snowy build, a jack o’Lantern can keep a doorway, bridge, route or work area clear without replacing every snow layer manually. Because it is a full placeable block rather than a temporary item, it can combine lighting and winter-environment control in one decoration.

Jack o’Lanterns have a second major role in mob construction: they can finish snow-golem and iron-golem structures. The head block must be placed last. If the jack o’Lantern is already part of the body arrangement before the rest of the structure is complete, the golem will not spawn.
What you need before crafting
- One pumpkin: You can find pumpkins naturally, grow them from seeds, obtain them from shipwrecks, or get them from traders, according to Minecraft’s official guidance.
- Shears: These are required to carve the pumpkin while it is placed in the world.
- One torch: The crafting reference lists the ingredient pair as “Carved Pumpkin + Torch.”
- A crafting grid: The recipe uses the carved pumpkin and torch together and produces one jack o’Lantern.
Keep the pumpkin uncarved until you are ready to use the shears. A normal pumpkin does not become a jack o’Lantern directly; the carving step changes it into the carved-pumpkin ingredient required by the recipe.
How to craft a jack o’Lantern
- Find or grow a pumpkin. Search the world for naturally generated pumpkins, check the relevant loot or trading opportunities described by the official article, or grow one from seeds.
- Place the pumpkin in the world. Carving is performed on a pumpkin block that has been placed, not on an item held only in your inventory.
- Use shears on the placed pumpkin. The pumpkin becomes a carved pumpkin. Collect the seeds produced by carving if you want to start or expand a pumpkin crop.
- Open a crafting grid. Put the carved pumpkin and one torch into any two available crafting slots.
- Collect the jack o’Lantern. The recipe is shapeless in normal crafting use, so the two ingredients do not need a special pattern. One carved pumpkin and one torch produce one jack o’Lantern.
If the output does not appear, check the two most common causes first: the pumpkin was not carved, or the second ingredient is not a torch. A regular pumpkin cannot substitute for a carved pumpkin.
Where to find jack o’Lanterns without crafting
Pre-made jack o’Lanterns can generate in piles of pumpkins in taiga and snowy-taiga villages. This is the fastest way to acquire one when you discover the right village before you have shears, a torch or a pumpkin farm.
Village generation can vary by edition and world seed, so finding a taiga or snowy-taiga village does not guarantee that every pumpkin pile will contain a jack o’Lantern. Treat naturally generated examples as an opportunistic source rather than a replacement for the simple carved-pumpkin recipe.

When exploring, look through pumpkin piles rather than searching only inside houses. The jack o’Lantern is a generated block in that environmental decoration, not a standard item that every villager keeps in a chest.

Maximum light output
The reference data records light level 15 for a jack o’Lantern, the game’s maximum light level. Use that output when you need a strongly lit area, want to reduce dark spots, or need a light source that also looks appropriate for a Halloween, village, farm or winter build.
Because the block itself is decorative, you can build it into floors, walls, roofs, columns and entry markers. Plan the visible face before placing it: the block’s facing follows the player’s placement direction.
Underwater construction
Jack o’Lanterns stay lit underwater. That makes them especially practical for submerged corridors and rooms, where a builder may want a light source that remains clearly visible after water is added. Place them along an underwater path, around a glass base or at the entrance to a flooded tunnel to keep navigation readable.
Underwater lighting is also useful during construction. A jack o’Lantern can illuminate a work area while you seal a room, drain water or extend a tunnel, then remain part of the finished decoration.

Snow and ice control
The official Minecraft article states that jack o’Lanterns melt snow and ice around them. In cold biomes, this lets one block perform two jobs: lighting a route and preventing the immediate area from staying covered in snow or frozen over.
Good locations include doorways, stair landings, bridges, paths between buildings and small platforms around outdoor workstations. If you want a continuous clear route, space the blocks according to the area that actually needs to remain free of snow or ice rather than scattering them only for appearance.
Making golems with a jack o’Lantern
A jack o’Lantern can be the final head block for golem construction. The critical sequence is the same for every supported arrangement: build the body first, then place the jack o’Lantern last. The reference material lists snow, iron and copper-golem configurations; availability of a particular golem can depend on the Minecraft edition and version you are playing.
Snow golem sequence
- Build the snow-golem body with the required snow-block arrangement.
- Check that the body is complete and unobstructed.
- Place the jack o’Lantern as the top head block.
- Wait for the snow golem to appear before moving or enclosing the structure.
Do not place the jack o’Lantern first and try to add the body afterward. The head is the activation step, so an incomplete arrangement will not produce the golem.
Iron golem sequence
- Assemble the iron-golem body from the required iron-block arrangement.
- Leave the head position open while you verify the body’s shape and clearance.
- Place the jack o’Lantern in the head position last.
- Confirm that the iron golem spawned before dismantling scaffolding or adding decorative blocks around it.
This order is useful even when you are building a larger village defense system. If the golem does not appear, inspect the body arrangement and the final placement rather than repeatedly replacing the same head block.

Copper-golem note
The current reference used for this guide also lists a copper-golem configuration. Because golem availability and mechanics can differ between editions or versions, verify that your specific release supports that construct before gathering materials. The placement rule remains important: complete the body first and use the jack o’Lantern as the final block.
Placement behavior and limitations
- No support block required: The reference records that a jack o’Lantern can be placed without a supporting block. This gives you more freedom for ceilings, suspended decorations and underwater structures.
- Facing follows placement direction: Turn your character before placement when the face needs to point toward a path, doorway or camera viewpoint.
- It cannot be worn: Unlike a carved pumpkin, a jack o’Lantern cannot be equipped as headgear. Use a carved pumpkin when the purpose is wearing a pumpkin, and use the jack o’Lantern when the purpose is lighting, decoration or golem construction.
- It is not the same as a carved pumpkin: Carving is an intermediate crafting step. The carved pumpkin is consumed with a torch to create the finished light-emitting block.
Jack o’Lantern compared with nearby alternatives
Choose the block according to the job you need it to perform. A torch is a separate light-source option, glowstone is another decorative lighting choice, and an ordinary carved pumpkin is the relevant alternative when you need wearable headgear. Compared with a torch or glowstone, the jack o’Lantern’s practical advantages are its maximum recorded light level, underwater operation, snow-and-ice melting and golem-head function. Its trade-off is preparation: you need a pumpkin, shears and a torch, and you must carve the pumpkin before crafting.

For an overworld path
Use the blocks as repeating markers at entrances, corners and intersections. Face each one consistently so the carved expression forms a deliberate visual pattern. In snowy regions, place them where snow buildup would interfere with travel, combining wayfinding with a clear walking surface.
For a base entrance
Put one on each side of the entrance or use a pair to identify the main door from a distance. Since no supporting block is required, a ceiling-mounted or suspended arrangement can work where a wall would be too crowded.

For an underwater base
Place jack o’Lanterns along the route before or after filling the structure with water. Their underwater glow makes them useful for marking airlock rooms, ladders, glass corridors and emergency exits. Orient the faces toward the direction in which players approach.
For a golem site
Keep the jack o’Lantern in your inventory until the body is completely assembled. This prevents accidental activation with an incomplete structure and makes the final placement an easy, deliberate step. Leave enough working room to inspect the body before placing the head.
Troubleshooting
The recipe does not show a jack o’Lantern
- Confirm that the pumpkin was carved with shears after being placed in the world.
- Confirm that the second ingredient is a torch, not another pumpkin or a different light source.
- Try both ingredients in different crafting slots; the recipe is shapeless.
- Check that you are looking for the output item after placing exactly one carved pumpkin and one torch.
The golem does not spawn
- Recheck the body arrangement for the golem type you are attempting.
- Make sure the jack o’Lantern was the final block placed.
- Remove any obstruction that prevents the intended structure from being recognized.
- Consider edition and version differences, particularly for the copper-golem configuration listed in the current reference.
The block faces the wrong way
Break and replace it while facing the direction you want the jack o’Lantern to look. Its orientation follows the player’s placement direction, so turning before placement is the simplest fix.
Snow or ice remains nearby
Verify that the jack o’Lantern is actually placed where the affected area needs light and melting. Its melting function applies around the block; a lamp placed too far from a path or platform will not clear the section you intended to keep open.
