To make a regular lantern in Minecraft, place one torch in the center of a crafting table and surround it with eight iron nuggets. For a soul lantern, use a soul torch in the same eight-nugget ring. Regular lanterns emit light level 15; soul lanterns emit light level 10, use a blue flame and repel piglins.

Lanterns are useful as both lighting and architectural details. You can set them on blocks or hang them beneath blocks, including from chains and ceiling beams. This guide covers the two established lantern types, where regular lanterns generate, how their light affects mob spawning, practical hanging layouts, decoration patterns and what to know about the announced copper variant.

A lantern is a placeable light source designed for builds that need more visual structure than a torch. Its compact shape works on floors, ledges, tables, bridges, porches and ceilings. The same block can read as a functional light, a street fixture or a small interior prop depending on how it is mounted.
There are two established recipes. A regular lantern uses a normal torch and produces the strongest lantern light. A soul lantern substitutes a soul torch and produces a cooler blue light with a lower output. Both recipes require eight iron nuggets arranged around the torch.

Regular lanterns also appear naturally in snowy tundra villages and bastion remnants. That gives you a way to collect examples while exploring, although crafting is the predictable method when you need a large, matching set.
How to craft a regular lantern
Ingredients
- One torch
- Eight iron nuggets
- A crafting table with its 3-by-3 crafting grid
Recipe steps
- Open the crafting table.
- Place one torch in the center slot of the grid.
- Fill every slot around the torch with an iron nugget. The eight nuggets form a complete ring; leave no corner or side slot empty.
- Take the lantern from the result slot and move it to your inventory.
The recipe returns one regular lantern. If the result does not appear, check that the torch is in the exact center and that all eight surrounding positions contain iron nuggets rather than iron ingots or other items.
Why the recipe is resource-efficient
The recipe uses nuggets instead of full iron ingots, so it is suited to projects that need repeated fixtures. Plan the number of lanterns first, then reserve one torch and eight nuggets for each unit. Keeping the ingredients grouped in your inventory makes it easier to build a batch without accidentally changing the pattern.
How to craft a soul lantern
Ingredients
- One soul torch
- Eight iron nuggets
- A crafting table
Recipe steps
- Open a crafting table.
- Put the soul torch in the center slot.
- Surround it with eight iron nuggets in the same complete ring used for a regular lantern.
- Collect the soul lantern from the result slot.
The only recipe change is the torch. If you receive a regular lantern, the center item was a normal torch rather than a soul torch. This makes the two lanterns easy to produce side by side when a build needs warm and blue accents.

Regular lantern versus soul lantern
| Feature | Regular lantern | Soul lantern |
|---|---|---|
| Center ingredient | Torch | Soul torch |
| Iron requirement | Eight iron nuggets | Eight iron nuggets |
| Light level | 15 | 10 |
| Flame color and mood | Warm orange light suited to general lighting | Blue light suited to colder, darker or Nether-themed scenes |
| Special behavior | Standard lantern behavior | Repels piglins |
| Typical environments | Homes, villages, paths, bridges, markets and interiors | Nether builds, snow and ice scenes, and areas where piglin behavior matters |
The light-level difference is substantial for planning. A regular lantern emits level 15, the maximum-strength output described in Minecraft’s lantern article. A soul lantern emits level 10: visibly dimmer, but still enough to prevent monster spawning according to the same explanation. The lower output also makes soul lanterns less likely to melt snow and ice, which is why they are useful in frozen builds.
Where regular lanterns generate naturally
Regular lanterns generate in snowy tundra villages and bastion remnants. When exploring, check village structures and the built areas of bastion remnants for existing lanterns you can use as design references or collect for a project.
Natural generation is limited to regular lanterns in the documented locations. Soul lanterns are made through their recipe, so bring soul torches and iron nuggets when you want the blue variant in quantity.
How to place and hang lanterns
Standing placement
A lantern can be placed on top of a supporting block. Use this arrangement on a table, wall ledge, fence post, stair landing, dock edge or bridge rail. Before placing a long row, set one sample lantern and view it from the approach direction; a one-block change in height can make a path feel either deliberate or cluttered.

Hanging placement
Lanterns can also hang beneath blocks. Aim at the underside of a ceiling, beam, roof edge or other supporting block and place the lantern so its hanging state is used. Hanging lanterns work especially well on porches, bridges, market streets, docks and halls because the light occupies the overhead space without taking up the walking surface.
Chains are a natural visual support for a hanging lantern. You can suspend a lantern from a chain attached to a roof beam, connect fixtures between opposing beams or repeat the same chain length along a covered street. The block-state documentation records the hanging state in both Java and Bedrock; see the lantern block-state documentation when you need to understand the placement state used by a particular build or command workflow.

Making a row look intentional
- Choose one mounting height for a room or street and keep it consistent.
- Use paired fixtures to frame an entrance, bridge start or important doorway.
- Align chains with roof beams, fence posts or wall divisions instead of placing them at arbitrary intervals.
- Leave enough visual space around each lantern that its silhouette remains readable.
- Test the view from both ends of a path; a pattern that looks balanced from one direction can appear offset from the other.
Lantern light and mob spawning
Light level 15 makes a regular lantern a strong general-purpose light source. Minecraft’s official lantern explanation places it on par with other maximum-strength sources such as glowstone, campfires, redstone lamps and jack-o’-lanterns, and slightly above torches.
Soul lanterns emit level 10. The official explanation says that level is enough to prevent monsters from spawning while remaining lower than a regular lantern. That combination is useful when you want a safe area without filling a snow or ice build with the warmest possible light.

Lighting is still a design system rather than a single-block guarantee. Walk the entire area after placing lanterns and look for dark pockets behind walls, under bridges, beneath stairs and inside roof overhangs. Add fixtures where the build’s usable floor remains dark, and avoid assuming that one lantern illuminates every block around a large structure.

1. Frame an entrance
Hang two regular lanterns over a doorway, separated by one or two blocks. The pair identifies the entrance without flooding the facade with light. Match their height to the top beam or lintel so the fixtures look built into the architecture rather than attached afterward.
2. Build a rhythm along paths and bridges
Alternate lantern posts with fences, walls or stripped logs. Keep the spacing and post height consistent over the full route. On a bridge, place fixtures at the same intervals on both sides only when the bridge is wide enough to support symmetry; otherwise, use one alternating side so the walkway remains visually open.
3. Cover a market street
Suspend lanterns from chains between roof beams or fence posts. A continuous sequence creates a clear street rhythm, while occasional gaps can mark a stall, intersection or change in building type. Regular lanterns suit warm wood and stone markets; soul lanterns can identify a themed district without changing the street plan.

4. Light a snow or ice build
Use soul lanterns where the blue color belongs in the palette and where the lower light level is preferable around snow and ice. Place them under eaves, beside frozen paths or inside an ice hall so the blue flame reinforces the environment instead of competing with it.
5. Create a Nether interior
Pair soul lanterns with basalt, blackstone or crimson materials. Their blue flame contrasts with dark blocks and supports a deliberate Nether mood. They also repel piglins, so a soul-lantern line can provide a functional layer in an area where piglin behavior is relevant.
6. Add a restrained interior accent
Place one lantern on a table or shelf, or hang one from a ceiling beam. Repeat the same height throughout the room rather than mixing several random elevations. A single fixture can define a reading corner, map wall, kitchen counter or entry landing without turning every surface into a light source.
7. Match materials to the flame
Regular lanterns pair naturally with warm wood, copper-toned blocks, stone and deepslate. Soul lanterns fit blue-gray blocks, basalt, warped wood and ice. This is a color-composition choice rather than a mechanical requirement, so use the contrast deliberately when the surrounding palette is already busy.

What to know about copper lanterns
Minecraft’s Copper Age announcement describes a copper lantern crafted in a similar way to the regular lantern, using copper and a copper torch. That announcement is the evidence for the variant; it does not, by itself, establish a universal release date, exact edition availability or the final in-game recipe for every version.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting recipes and placement
The crafting result is empty
- Verify that the grid is a full 3-by-3 crafting table grid, not a smaller inventory grid.
- Put the torch or soul torch in the exact center slot.
- Use eight individual iron nuggets, including all four corners and all four side positions.
- For a soul lantern, confirm that the center item is a soul torch.
The lantern is not hanging
- Aim at the underside of the supporting block rather than its top surface.
- Check that the ceiling, beam or roof edge provides a block face from which the lantern can hang.
- Place a short chain first when the build needs a visible suspension point, then attach the lantern to the intended support.
- Test the same arrangement in a small sample section before repeating it across a large roof.
The area still feels dark
- Inspect corners, under-stair spaces, bridge undersides and roof overhangs.
- Increase fixture frequency where the walking route passes behind walls or through changes in elevation.
- Use regular lanterns when maximum brightness is the priority; reserve soul lanterns for situations where their color, lower output or piglin behavior is more important.
Lantern planning checklist
- Decide whether the build needs warm level-15 lighting or blue level-10 lighting.
- Count the fixtures and reserve one matching torch plus eight iron nuggets per lantern.
- Choose floor, ledge or hanging placement before constructing the full roof or street.
- Align hanging points with beams, chains, fence posts or wall divisions.
- Walk the finished route and inspect dark pockets from several viewing directions.
- Use soul lanterns around snow, ice or piglin-sensitive Nether scenes when their documented behavior fits the build.
- Verify the version and edition before relying on the announced copper lantern variant.
