The current Minecraft wood roster
The maintained Minecraft Wiki reference consulted on October 15, 2026, lists nine tree-log families and two fungus-derived Nether stem families. Together they are the practical set most players mean by “all wood types.” Each family keeps its own color and grain through its log, stripped log, planks and related recipes.

The nine Overworld entries are logs because they come from trees. Crimson and warped blocks are called stems because they come from giant fungi in the Nether, but they occupy the same broad crafting family: each has a matching stripped form, planks and wooden-style building pieces.
What “wood,” “log,” “stem” and “plank” mean
A log or stem is the full block harvested from its corresponding tree or fungus. A stripped log or stripped stem is the same family after its outer bark-like texture has been removed with an axe. Planks are the smaller construction units made from either form.

Recipes are designed to work in parallel across families. Oak is not intrinsically stronger than spruce, cherry or warped material merely because it looks different. The choice is normally visual, dimensional or functional: jungle logs have the cocoa-bean interaction, and Nether stems have different fire behavior from ordinary flammable wood. Recipe names and edge cases can change with updates, so treat the list above as the current roster rather than an eternal rule for every historical version.
How to turn logs or stems into planks
- Collect one matching block. Use an oak log for oak planks, a warped stem for warped planks, and so on. Mixing families never changes the output into a different variety.
- Choose whether to strip it. Use an axe on the log or stem with the game’s normal interact/use control. The block becomes its stripped counterpart. This changes the texture, not the family.
- Open any crafting grid. A two-by-two inventory grid is sufficient; a crafting table is not required for the basic conversion.
- Place the log, stripped log, stem or stripped stem in the grid. The result is four planks of that same variety. Mojang’s beginner guide summarizes the yield as, “One wood block makes four planks!”
- Move the planks to your inventory. Repeat the conversion when you need more material, keeping varieties separate if a recipe or a color scheme calls for a specific family.
For planning, one block always represents a four-plank bundle under this conversion. Four planks can then be arranged into a crafting table, which opens the larger three-by-three recipe grid used for advanced wooden recipes.

That older article discussed six Overworld types at the time. It is useful for explaining the conversion, but it should not be treated as a complete modern list because mangrove, cherry and pale oak were added later.

Stripped versus regular logs and stems

Stripping is therefore a design decision, not an upgrade. It does not increase the plank yield, unlock a superior tier or make a recipe more efficient. Builders often alternate regular and stripped blocks from one family to suggest beams, framing or layered walls without introducing a second color.
What planks let you craft
Planks are the basic wooden construction and crafting material. Once you have a crafting table, the same family can be carried through a large group of recipes.

- Crafting tables: Four planks create the table that provides a three-by-three grid.
- Sticks: Planks are shaped into sticks, which are components for tools, weapons, torches and many other recipes.
- Basic wooden tools: Planks form the wooden tool handles and heads used when starting a world or replacing worn equipment.
Doors, barriers and redstone parts
- Doors, trapdoors and fences: These turn planks into entrances, shutters, railings and perimeter pieces.
- Buttons: Wooden buttons provide a compact input for doors, mechanisms and redstone circuits.
- Pistons: Planks are one of the components in piston recipes, alongside the other required materials.
- Shields: A wooden component is combined with iron to make a shield.
Transport, sleep and furnishing
- Boats: Matching planks form the hull for the family’s boat variant where that recipe is available.
- Beds: Planks make the wooden base, with wool supplying the other part of the recipe.
- Building pieces: Planks are the source material for a family’s wooden slabs, stairs and related decorative blocks, where the edition provides those variants.
The exact recipe book can differ between Java and Bedrock editions or change in a later update, but the family logic remains consistent: use the variety you want to see in the finished item. A spruce plank recipe does not silently produce oak, and a crimson plank recipe does not turn into an Overworld wood item.
Uses for logs and stems beyond plank conversion
Campfires and soul campfires
Logs and stems are used in campfire-related crafting. Soul campfires use the same broad wooden support with soul-material components, producing the Nether-themed blue flame. These recipes are one reason to keep some full blocks instead of converting every piece immediately.

Smokers
Logs or stems also appear in the crafting of smokers, the food-processing workstation. If you are setting up an early base, reserve full wood blocks for this workstation before turning the rest into planks.
Charcoal production
Ordinary logs can be smelted to produce charcoal. This creates a renewable early fuel loop: harvest logs, smelt them into charcoal, then use that fuel for additional smelting. The log is consumed during the process, so this is a utility use rather than a way to preserve building blocks.

Furnace fuel
The current reference gives a regular log a fuel value of 1.5 smelted items per log. That figure applies to the log’s furnace-fuel role, not to every object made from it. The reference also distinguishes logs from stems: logs can fuel furnaces, while stems do not. Plank families that are flammable can also serve as furnace fuel, but do not assume that every Nether-derived wood item behaves like an Overworld log.
Note-block sound
Place a note block on a wood block when you want the bass sound associated with logs and stems. This lets the same material serve an audio purpose in redstone music builds as well as a visual one.

Cocoa beans on jungle logs
Regular jungle logs can carry cocoa beans. That interaction is specific to the jungle family and is separate from the normal plank conversion. Keep the log form intact when you are building a cocoa-bean growing area; stripping or converting the block changes what you can place on it.

Because recipes are largely parallel, choose wood by the visual job it must perform.
- Neutral structure: Oak is the adaptable middle tone for houses, starter bases and mixed-material builds.
- Dark framing: Spruce and dark oak provide progressively deeper browns for roofs, beams and outlines.
- Light contrast: Birch and pale oak separate interiors or modern walls from darker floors and roofs.
- Warm color accents: Acacia, mangrove and cherry supply orange, red and pink notes that stand out without changing the underlying recipe family.
- Dense tropical texture: Jungle combines a warm brown appearance with the cocoa-bean interaction.
- Nether palettes: Crimson gives red surfaces and warped gives blue-green surfaces; both are stems and should be treated separately from ordinary flammable Overworld wood when planning furnaces or fire-based decoration.
Stripped blocks are particularly useful when you need a smooth column or beam. Regular blocks expose the bark-like sides and read as trunks; stripped blocks make the same family look processed. Using both forms together creates depth without sacrificing a consistent color palette.

“I placed a block but got the wrong planks.”
Check the family before crafting. The output always follows the input variety. A stripped mangrove log produces mangrove planks, while a warped stem produces warped planks; there is no universal “wood plank” item.

“I cannot make stripped wood.”
Use an axe’s interact action on the log or stem itself. Mining the block normally only harvests it; stripping is a separate axe action. Make sure the block is a supported log or stem rather than a plank, slab or stair.

“My furnace will not burn this stem.”
Do not treat every wood-looking block as identical fuel. The current reference specifies furnace fuel for logs, not stems. Convert a suitable Overworld log into charcoal or use another accepted fuel instead.
“The recipe book does not show a recipe I expected.”
Confirm the edition and version. Recipe names, available families and edge-case behavior can change with updates. The nine-log/two-stem roster in this guide is tied to the current reference consulted on October 15, 2026, rather than an older snapshot.
A practical way to manage wood supplies
- Sort by family when you return from harvesting. Keep oak, spruce, Nether stems and other varieties in separate inventory slots or storage rows.
- Reserve full blocks for special interactions. Set aside jungle logs for cocoa beans, logs needed for charcoal, and full blocks required for campfires, soul campfires, smokers or note-block installations.
- Strip only what the build needs. Stripping is irreversible in ordinary play, so process a block when you know you want the clean texture.
- Convert the remainder in batches. Each matching block produces four planks, making it easy to estimate how many blocks a construction project requires.
- Use the crafting table for the larger plan. Turn planks into the table first, then make the doors, fences, boats, beds, tools or redstone components your project calls for.
Bottom line
Minecraft’s wood system is broad but predictable: nine Overworld log families and two Nether stem families share a common plank-based crafting language. One matching log or stem—regular or stripped—becomes four planks of that variety. Strip blocks when you need a clean architectural texture, keep full logs for campfires, smokers, charcoal, note-block bass or jungle cocoa beans, and remember that furnace fuel rules distinguish logs from stems. Once those distinctions are clear, selecting a wood type is mainly a matter of color, grain and the special interaction your build requires.
