To set it up, create or use a family group on Nintendo’s account website, add every adult and child account, have invitees accept their invitations, and then have an eligible adult in the group buy the family membership. Merely sharing a Switch console does not share online coverage between its local users.
What a Nintendo Switch Online family setup actually covers
Nintendo ties the subscription to accounts, not to a particular console. When a group member buys a Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership, Nintendo provides the Nintendo Switch Online service to the Nintendo Accounts in that purchaser’s family group, with a maximum of eight Nintendo Account users. Each covered person can use the service on their own compatible console; the members do not need to play on the same Switch.

The family group and the subscription are separate pieces of the setup:

- Family group: The account relationship managed through the Nintendo Account website. It determines which accounts are grouped together and what role each account has.
- Family membership: The paid Nintendo Switch Online subscription purchased by an eligible adult who belongs to that group.
- Console profiles: Local users on a Switch. A profile is not automatically placed in the family group simply because it exists on the console.
Adding a person to a family group does not merge My Nintendo points, purchase history, activity, or other account data. Those remain associated with each individual Nintendo Account. Coverage also follows the account: if an account is not listed in the family group, it is not covered by the family membership even if it uses the same console.

Nintendo explains the group structure and roles in its support guidance for Nintendo Account family groups and family-group roles.
Check these requirements before you begin
- Each intended player needs a Nintendo Account. Do not assume a Switch’s local profile is already a Nintendo Account.
- You need web access to the Nintendo Account website and the sign-in details for the account that will manage the group.
- For an existing account invitation, you need the email address registered to that person’s Nintendo Account.
- The group can contain up to eight Nintendo Account users, including adults and children.
- The person buying the subscription must be a family-group member aged 18 or older. That person does not have to be the family-group administrator.
- Child-account creation and parental-consent prompts can vary by region. Have the required parent or guardian information available and follow the prompts shown for your country.
Decide in advance which adult should administer membership changes and which adult should make the purchase. These can be different people, but both accounts must be in the same family group before the subscription is bought.
Create or open the Nintendo Account family group
If no family group exists
- Open the Nintendo Account family-group member setup page and sign in to the Nintendo Account that will administer the group.
- Choose Create family group.
- Review the group details and role information displayed by Nintendo. The account that creates the group becomes the administrator.
- Keep the account’s sign-in information secure. The administrator controls invitations and other group membership changes.
If a family group already exists
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account website with the group administrator’s account.
- Open the family-group management area.
- Choose Add a member to start an invitation or child-account setup.
Nintendo’s labels and confirmation screens can differ slightly by region or account status. The important check is that you are viewing the family-group management page, not merely the users stored on a particular Switch.
Invite an existing Nintendo Account
Use an invitation when the person already has a Nintendo Account that should remain their own account.
- From the administrator’s family-group page, choose Invite someone to your family group.
- Enter the email address registered to the invitee’s Nintendo Account. An address that is not attached to that account may not complete the invitation.
- Send the invitation. Nintendo emails the account owner a verification link.
- Ask the invitee to open that email, follow the verification link, and sign in to the invited Nintendo Account.
- The invitee must choose Join family group. Until that acceptance is completed, the person is not covered and will not appear as a member.
- Return to the administrator’s family-group page and confirm that the account now appears in the member list.
Nintendo states that, once the Nintendo Account owner agrees, the account appears in the family group and the administrator can assign it a role. The invitation process, including the verification screen, is documented in How to Add Members to a Nintendo Account Family Group.

If the invitation email does not arrive
- Have the invitee check spam, junk, promotions, and filtered mail folders.
- Confirm that the administrator entered the email address currently registered to the intended Nintendo Account.
- Check the family-group page for the invitation’s status before sending another one.
- Do not create a second Nintendo Account just to bypass an unaccepted invitation; that would leave the original account outside the group.
Create and add a child account
If a child does not already have a Nintendo Account, the administrator can use Nintendo’s child-account option while adding a member. This creates the child’s account inside the family group instead of sending an invitation to an existing adult account.
- Sign in as the family-group administrator and choose Add a member.
- Select Nintendo’s option to create a child account.
- Enter the requested child and account information.
- Complete any parent-consent or guardian-confirmation steps presented for your region.
- Finish the setup and verify that the new child account appears in the family-group member list.
Consent requirements are not identical worldwide, so do not assume that another country’s confirmation flow will appear on your screen. If Nintendo asks for an adult account, payment verification, or another regional consent step, complete the process shown by Nintendo rather than substituting an adult account for the child’s account.

Family membership can cover it, but the account’s activity, points, purchases, and saved identity are not merged with the administrator’s account.
Understand family-group roles before changing anything
The administrator controls who joins and leaves the group and manages role assignments. Other roles can include adult members and supervised child accounts. The administrator does not have to be the person who pays for Nintendo Switch Online.
| Account situation | What it can do for setup | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Family-group administrator | Create the group, invite members, add child accounts, and manage membership changes. | Being administrator does not make the account the only person who can buy the subscription. |
| Adult family-group member aged 18 or older | Purchase a Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership for the group. | The account must already belong to the group when purchasing. |
| Invited existing account | Join after opening the email, verifying, signing in, and choosing Join family group. | An unaccepted invitation provides no coverage. |
| Child account | Remain in the group and receive coverage when the group has a family membership. | Creation and consent steps vary by region. |

Buy the Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership
- Confirm that every intended player is visible in the family-group member list and that pending invitations have been accepted.
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account of an adult group member who is at least 18 years old. The purchaser may be the administrator or another adult member.
- Open Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online membership purchase page and select the Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership option available for your region.
- Review the term, currency, renewal settings, and included service shown at checkout. Nintendo’s prices and plan availability are regional and can change, so use the amount displayed for your account rather than a price quoted for another country.
- Complete the purchase using the payment and confirmation process presented by Nintendo.
- After payment, sign in to the family-group page again and verify that the membership is active for the purchasing account and the group.
Nintendo’s official membership explanation says that a family or Expansion Pack Family membership provides Nintendo Switch Online service to everyone in the purchaser’s family group, up to eight Nintendo Account users. The full eligibility and account-interaction rules are in Information About Nintendo Switch Online Family Memberships; Nintendo also provides an overview of the family option at Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership.

Both are family subscriptions tied to the same family-group mechanism. The Expansion Pack version is a separate plan, so compare the benefits, term, and current local price shown by Nintendo before checkout. Do not use a price or feature list from another country: Nintendo presents plan availability and pricing by market, and those details can change.
Verify that every player is covered
Do this check before assuming the setup worked:
- On the Nintendo Account website, open the family-group member list.
- Match each person’s Nintendo Account name or email identity to the player you intended to cover.
- Look for pending invitations. A pending invitation means that account owner still has to accept.
- On each Switch, open the local user profile that is linked to the covered Nintendo Account. A different local profile linked to an account outside the group will not inherit the membership.
- Launch a service that requires Nintendo Switch Online, such as an online game or cloud-save function available to that account, and confirm that Nintendo recognizes the membership.
Different people can use different consoles. The membership follows the Nintendo Accounts in the family group, not the Switch on which the administrator made the purchase.
What happens if someone already has an individual membership?
Nintendo’s US support guidance says an active individual membership and a family membership do not combine their remaining periods. Instead, the account receives the longest applicable period. This means you should not expect the unused time on an individual plan to be added end-to-end to the family plan.
Nintendo also says that an account covered by an active family membership cannot buy or redeem an individual membership code. Check the account’s current membership status before buying another code, especially when moving a person from an individual plan into a family group.

Leaving the group, changing the purchaser, and restoring coverage
The administrator manages who joins and leaves, but the subscription’s coverage is connected to the purchaser’s continued place in the family group.
- If the purchaser leaves the family group, other members can lose Nintendo Switch Online benefits, including Save Data Cloud backup, until coverage is restored.
- The person who leaves also loses their family-membership coverage.
- Removing an account or leaving the group does not transfer that account’s My Nintendo points or activity to another member.
- Before an administrator removes the purchaser, choose another eligible adult in the group and plan how coverage will be restored.
If coverage disappears, first check whether the purchasing account is still a member and whether the family membership is active. If the purchaser left, restore service through an eligible adult group member rather than assuming that the old subscription will automatically follow another account. Nintendo lists the relevant membership consequences in its family-membership information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set up parental controls separately
Nintendo Switch Online sharing does not configure parental controls. Treat account supervision, console restrictions, and the online membership as separate tasks.
Family-group account controls
Some restrictions and supervision settings are managed through Nintendo Account family-group settings. Use the administrator or an eligible parent/guardian account, select the relevant child account, and review the controls Nintendo makes available for your region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConsole controls
Nintendo Switch system settings can impose restrictions on the console itself. Nintendo warns that many parental controls apply system-wide, so a restriction configured on one Switch can affect everyone who uses that console, not just one child’s profile.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app
The smart-device app provides additional functions, including play-time limits and gameplay history. Nintendo also supports sharing responsibility so eligible parent or guardian accounts in the family group can help manage parental controls. Follow Nintendo’s instructions for setting up, adjusting, or removing Nintendo Switch Parental Controls and for sharing parental-control responsibility.
Because console restrictions can affect every local user, decide whether a rule should apply to the whole device or only to an account-level family-group setting before enabling it.
Troubleshoot the most common setup failures
The account is not covered after purchase
- Check that the account appears in the purchaser’s family group, not merely as a local Switch user.
- Check for an invitation that has not been accepted.
- Confirm that the Switch profile is linked to the same Nintendo Account shown in the family group.
- Sign out and back in to the affected Nintendo Account, then recheck membership status.
The invitee cannot join
- Use the email address registered to the intended Nintendo Account.
- Have the invitee open the verification link while signed in to that account.
- Make sure the invitee selects Join family group; viewing the email alone is not acceptance.
- If the link has expired or the invitation status is unclear, the administrator should check the family-group page and follow Nintendo’s current resend or cancellation option.
The group is full
A family group supports up to eight Nintendo Account users. Remove an account only after confirming that the person no longer needs coverage and understands the effect on their Nintendo Switch Online access. If the group already has eight accounts, another account must leave before a new member can be added.
A child-account flow asks for different information
Regional age, consent, and verification rules differ. Follow the prompts displayed for the account’s country and use the appropriate parent or guardian account. Do not infer that a consent step is missing simply because it was not required in another region.
Parental controls affect everyone on the console
Review whether the restriction was set as a system-wide console rule. Move account-specific supervision to the family-group settings where Nintendo provides that option, and use the smart-device app for supported play-time and activity features.
A final setup checklist
- The administrator can sign in to the Nintendo Account website.
- The family group exists and has no more than eight users.
- Every adult’s invitation was accepted through the verification link and Join family group.
- Each child account was created or added with the regional consent steps completed.
- The purchasing account is an adult group member aged 18 or older.
- The Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership term and local price were reviewed at checkout.
- Every intended player’s Nintendo Account appears in the family-group list.
- Each console profile is linked to the correct Nintendo Account.
- Parental controls were configured separately, with system-wide effects understood.
- The group knows what will happen if the purchaser leaves.
