Minecraft’s Mounts of Mayhem game drop launched on December 9, 2025, for Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. It adds the spear and its speed-sensitive charge attack, rideable Nautiluses for underwater travel, zombie horses in Survival, and new horse equipment. The release is Java Edition 1.21.11 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.130.
What is Minecraft’s Mounts of Mayhem update?
Mojang described Mounts of Mayhem as the fourth game drop of 2025. Game drops are more frequent updates released throughout the year rather than a single annual update, as Minecraft’s September 27, 2025 reveal explained. The drop focuses on mounted combat and travel: players get a new spear, additional mount encounters, an underwater riding option, and horse armor.

The announcement is now historical rather than upcoming news. Minecraft named December 9, 2025 as the launch date for both editions in its November 26 release-date announcement.
What does the spear do?
The spear has two attacks: a jab for close-range combat and a charge attack whose damage scales with movement speed. That makes momentum a combat factor: mounted movement can help build speed for a charge, and the weapon also has uses beyond riding. Minecraft’s update overview describes the spear’s two attack styles and speed-based charge.

Crafting and Lunge
The launch article lists spear recipes using wood, copper, iron, gold, diamond, or Netherite. The spear can also receive the Lunge enchantment, which provides a burst of speed while consuming hunger points; the amount consumed depends on the enchantment level. These details come from the launch-date article.
How do you ride a Nautilus in Minecraft?
A Nautilus is a neutral aquatic mob that can be tamed with pufferfish and ridden with a saddle. In the Java Edition release notes, Nautiluses are described as spawning in ocean biomes. While riding, the player receives Breath of the Nautilus, which stops their air bubbles from decreasing. That makes the mount useful for underwater travel rather than a substitute for land combat. See the Java Edition 1.21.11 release notes and official feature overview.
Zombie Nautilus encounters
A Zombie Nautilus appears with a drowned rider carrying a trident. It is initially a hostile encounter; overcome the rider and the Nautilus can become a potential mount. The official launch-date feature description introduces this mounted enemy alongside the tamed Nautilus.

How do zombie horses work in Survival?
Zombie horses are no longer limited to Creative mode: they can spawn in Survival with hostile zombie riders. Deal with the rider first, then tame the horse and equip it with a saddle and horse armor. Minecraft’s Java release notes and Bedrock release notes document the Survival change and the horse equipment.

Netherite Horse Armor is included in the release materials for both editions. Bedrock Edition’s 1.21.130 notes specify that it can be crafted and provides 19 armor points. That value is specific to the Bedrock notes; the Java release record confirms the armor’s inclusion but does not state the same armor-point figure. Consult the Bedrock Edition 1.21.130 notes and Java Edition 1.21.11 notes.
Land combat or underwater exploration?
| Play style | What Mounts of Mayhem adds | What it is suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Land combat | Spear jab and speed-sensitive charge attacks; zombie horses that can be tamed; horse armor including Netherite Horse Armor | Building momentum for attacks and riding into encounters |
| Underwater travel | Tameable, saddle-ridden Nautiluses; Breath of the Nautilus while mounted | Exploring underwater while the rider’s air bubbles do not decrease |
These are separate approaches rather than interchangeable mount types: the spear and armored horses support land-based combat, while the Nautilus changes how a player can travel underwater.
