Ocean monuments are rare structures in Minecraft’s deep ocean biomes, defended by guardians and three elder guardians. Bring water-breathing support, strong armor, food, blocks for cover, and a way to create or preserve air. Kill the elders first—especially the one above the central section—because their Mining Fatigue III effect is the main obstacle to mining, draining, and escaping. After the debuff is gone, you can collect the monument’s gold, prismarine, sea lanterns, sponges, and tide armor trim, then decide whether to strip it, drain it, or build a guardian farm.

What an ocean monument is and why it matters
An ocean monument is a large underwater structure that generates in deep ocean biomes. It combines valuable building materials with one of the game’s most demanding early-to-mid-game combat environments. Guardians patrol its corridors and chambers, while three elder guardians protect the structure and repeatedly impose Mining Fatigue III on nearby players.

Its long-term value is greater than its initial chest-free loot run: prismarine and sea lanterns are useful decorative blocks, sponges make large underwater construction practical, and guardians provide renewable prismarine materials, fish, and experience once a farm is established.
Minecraft.net describes the headline haul as “the treasure of gold blocks, a lot of prismarine and sea lanterns, and occasionally a room full of sponges.” The monument is therefore worth locating even if you do not intend to convert it into a permanent base or farm.

How to find an ocean monument
Use a cartographer’s ocean explorer map
The most practical documented method is to trade with a cartographer for an ocean explorer map. The map points toward a monument and avoids the unreliable process of searching thousands of ocean blocks by boat. Cartographer trades vary with villager progression and your world’s edition and settings, so make sure you have enough emeralds and the required trade materials before leaving.
- Locate or create a cartographer villager.
- Level the villager until an ocean explorer map is available.
- Buy the map and identify the monument marker.
- Travel by boat toward the marker, checking the map as you close the distance.
- Bring spare supplies before diving; the monument’s guardian attacks can make a return trip difficult if you arrive unprepared.
Search by boat when a map is unavailable
Monuments generate in deep ocean biomes, so a boat is the efficient search vehicle. Scan for the structure’s large prismarine silhouette beneath the surface, but do not dive simply because you see a possible structure. Guardians can begin attacking as soon as you enter their range, and poor visibility makes it easy to lose the surface route. Mark your approach with a temporary pillar, signs, or coordinates so you can return after preparing.
Preparation checklist
The official Minecraft guidance recommends a boat, food, water-breathing potions, and a turtle shell. A conduit is a strong upgrade for a planned raid or construction project because it supports extended underwater operation without repeatedly resurfacing. Treat the following as a minimum planning checklist rather than a rigid loadout.
- Water-breathing support: Carry water-breathing potions, a turtle shell, or a conduit. Potions provide predictable raid time; a turtle shell extends underwater breathing; a conduit is most useful when you expect to work around the monument for a long period.
- Food: Bring enough to restore health and hunger between guardian encounters. A short food supply is a common reason a successful raid turns into a forced retreat.
- Armor and weapons: Use your strongest practical armor and a reliable weapon. Guardians attack from range, so include a method for dealing with targets across a room rather than relying only on close combat.
- Blocks: Bring inexpensive blocks for cover, sealing corridors, marking explored routes, and creating temporary bases. Blocks also let you cut line of sight while you recover health.
- Air-pocket tools: Doors or strategically placed blocks can create temporary air pockets. They are especially useful when your potion timer is running down or when you need to heal.
- Milk buckets: Java Edition players can use milk to remove Mining Fatigue, although the effect returns when an elder guardian checks again. Bedrock Edition players should not rely on milk as their main plan.
- Mining equipment: Bring the correct tool for each block and, where available, efficiency enchantments. This matters most in Bedrock Edition, where waiting out Mining Fatigue with milk is ineffective.
- Water-removal plan: If you intend to drain the structure, reserve space for sponges and the fuel or Nether access needed to dry them.
Know the guardians before entering
Regular guardians
Guardians use ranged laser attacks and can damage attackers with their spikes when those spikes are extended. Their laser encourages you to break line of sight rather than stand in open water trading hits. Walls, corners, and temporary block barriers turn a dangerous hallway into a series of controlled encounters.
Elder guardians
Each monument contains three elder guardians. A current Minecraft Wiki tutorial lists each elder at 80 health points and gives its Mining Fatigue III effect a 50-block radius. In Java Edition, the elder checks for nearby players roughly every 60 seconds, so killing one does not stop the effect immediately if another elder remains alive.
Rank #2
The elders are larger and stronger than ordinary guardians. Their location and the maze-like layout make navigation as important as damage output. Your first raid objective is not collecting blocks; it is finding and killing all three elders.

1. Establish a safe entry
Approach from the surface with your boat positioned so you can retreat. Enter with cover already planned: a block wall, a sealed doorway, or a short route back to open water. Avoid swimming through the center without knowing where you will breathe, heal, or break line of sight.
2. Find and kill the top elder when practical
The upper elder is often the most convenient first target because it can impose Mining Fatigue over a broad area. Use cover as you close the distance, expose yourself only long enough to attack, and retreat behind blocks while the guardian’s laser is charging. If the layout makes another elder safer to reach first, take the safer fight rather than forcing a particular order.
3. Clear the two wing elders
After the upper section is secure, work through the side wings. Mark dead ends and rooms you have already checked. The monument’s repeated corridors can look identical, and a simple block marker prevents you from wasting air and health by searching the same branch twice.
4. Use rooms as temporary bases
Seal a room or corridor with blocks and use it as a staging point. Add a door or another block arrangement that creates an air pocket, then restock health and check your water-breathing time before the next push. These bases also give you a fixed retreat point when guardians converge.

5. Confirm all three elders are dead
Do not begin a major mining or draining project until every elder has been eliminated. A surviving elder can reapply Mining Fatigue while you are breaking walls, leaving you trapped in a dangerous room with slow mining speed and limited air. Once all three are dead, allow the remaining debuff time to expire before starting heavy work.
Mining Fatigue III: Java versus Bedrock
| Edition | What to expect | Most reliable response |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Milk clears Mining Fatigue, but an elder can apply it again on its periodic check; the tutorial describes checks at roughly 60-second intervals. | Carry milk buckets, use them when you need to mine or escape, and keep attacking elders until all three are dead. |
| Bedrock Edition | The tutorial reports that milk removes the effect for no more than about one second, making repeated drinking impractical. | Use the correct tool for every block, apply efficiency enchantments where available, mine from protected positions, and build routes and cover before committing to a wall. |
Java strategy
On Java, milk is a tactical reset rather than a permanent cure. Drink it when a critical block must be broken, when you need to open an escape route, or when you are preparing a safe room. Keep replacement water-breathing supplies available because milk also removes beneficial status effects. The permanent solution remains the same: locate and kill every elder.
Bedrock strategy
On Bedrock, plan as though Mining Fatigue will remain active during the raid. Bring the appropriate pickaxe or other tool for the block you are breaking, use efficiency enchantments if you have them, and place cover before mining. Protected routes—short tunnels, sealed work bays, and marked exits—are more valuable than a large supply of milk.
What loot is in an ocean monument?
| Reward | How it is obtained or used | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Gold blocks | The monument’s central treasure includes eight gold blocks. | The named figure of eight is given by the current Minecraft official article and tutorial references. |
| Prismarine | Mine the structure for prismarine building material. | Large quantities are available after the elders are defeated and Mining Fatigue has expired. |
| Sea lanterns | Collect underwater light blocks for construction and decoration. | Silk Touch is useful when you want the sea lantern intact. |
| Sponges | Use them to remove water while draining rooms or creating a base. | They appear in occasional sponge rooms, and each elder can provide a sponge according to the tutorial reference. |
| Guardian drops | Guardians provide prismarine shards, prismarine crystals, fish, and experience. | Renewable quantities require continued guardian spawning or a guardian farm. |
| Tide armor trim | The monument’s elders are associated with the tide armor trim. | The tutorial lists the trim among monument rewards; obtainment details can vary by edition and current game version. |
The eight gold blocks are the most obvious concentrated treasure, but prismarine and sea lanterns are often the more useful long-term haul for builders. Bring Silk Touch if intact sea lanterns matter to your design. Without it, plan for the drops and crafting process rather than assuming every lantern will remain as a placed block.
How to use sponges for draining
Sponges from elder guardians and sponge rooms can remove water from the monument. Work in manageable sections instead of trying to empty the entire structure at once. Place sponges to clear a room, collect the wet sponges, then dry them in a furnace with fuel or use a Nether portal to dry them for reuse. A staged approach reduces the amount of exposed time and gives you dry working areas as you progress.
Rank #4
- Seal a room or section with blocks so water from adjacent areas does not immediately refill it.
- Place sponges through the section until the water is removed.
- Collect the wet sponges before moving to the next section.
- Dry them in furnaces with fuel, or use a Nether portal as the drying method described by the tutorial.
- Repeat section by section, maintaining a marked route back to your air supply.
What to do after the elders are dead
Quick loot run
If your goal is simply the treasure, wait for the active Mining Fatigue effect to expire, collect the gold core, mine selected prismarine and sea lanterns, and leave. This is the lowest-effort option and avoids the large material and time cost of draining the monument.
Strip the monument for building materials
After the structure is safe, mine prismarine and sea lanterns at your own pace. Silk Touch is particularly useful for preserving sea lanterns intact. Keep a temporary storage area outside the monument or in a sealed room so repeated trips do not force you back to the surface after every inventory fills.

Draining creates dry interior space for farms, storage, laboratories, or a custom underwater base. Use sponge sections and sealed work zones rather than removing water indiscriminately. The monument’s existing rooms provide a strong starting layout, but expect to spend substantially more time on water control, lighting, and safe access than on the initial elder fight.
Build a guardian farm
Guardians spawn only in ocean monuments. A guardian farm can therefore turn the cleared structure into a renewable source of prismarine shards, prismarine crystals, fish, and experience. The Minecraft Wiki guardian-farming tutorial cites approximately 180,000 XP per hour for a fully optimized farm; that figure describes an optimized design, not the guaranteed output of every farm.
Farm construction is a separate engineering project. You must account for guardian spawning spaces, collection or transport, player safety, and the monument’s surrounding water. Clear the elders first so Mining Fatigue does not interfere with excavation and routing. A modest farm may be easier to complete and maintain than a design aimed at the cited maximum rate.
Best Value
Choosing a raid approach
| Approach | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct entry with potions and armor | Players who want the three elders and basic loot quickly. | Requires careful use of cover and air because guardians can attack before you understand the layout. |
| Conduit-supported preparation | Extended clearing, construction, or repeated trips around the monument. | Requires the additional setup needed for a conduit, but reduces dependence on repeated potion timing. |
| Roof or upper-section entry | Players who can reach the top elder safely and want to reduce the strongest nearby threat early. | The approach can be awkward if you lack a controlled way to reach and retreat from the roof. |
| Quick loot | Gold blocks, selected prismarine, and sea lanterns without a full renovation. | You leave the structure’s larger building and farming potential unused. |
| Full drain | A permanent base or large dry construction site. | Consumes significant time, blocks, and sponge-drying capacity. |
| Guardian farm | Renewable prismarine-related drops, fish, and experience. | Requires substantial excavation and a design that safely controls guardian spawning and collection. |
Common failure points and fixes
You cannot find the monument again
Return to the cartographer’s ocean explorer map, your marked boat route, or the coordinates you recorded before diving. Always leave a visible surface marker or write down coordinates during the first approach.
You run out of air inside
Use a prebuilt door or block air pocket, retreat to a sealed staging room, and carry more than one water-breathing option. A turtle shell or conduit gives you more operating time, but neither replaces a route back to the surface.
Mining is impossibly slow
On Java, drink milk when you need to break a critical block and continue hunting the elders. On Bedrock, assume milk will help for only about one second; switch to the correct tool, use efficiency enchantments where available, and mine from a protected position.
Guardians kill you while you mine
Stop mining in open water. Place cover first, break line of sight, and divide the monument into rooms or short corridors. Mark cleared areas so you do not repeatedly cross the same exposed space.
Water returns after you place sponges
Seal the section before sponging it. Adjacent water can refill an unsealed room faster than you can clear it. Collect and dry wet sponges so you can repeat the process rather than treating each sponge as disposable.
You begin draining too soon
A surviving elder can reapply Mining Fatigue while you are trying to remove water. Confirm that all three elders are dead, then wait for the active effect to expire before beginning large-scale excavation.
Quick Recap
A practical first-monument plan
- Trade for an ocean explorer map with a cartographer and travel by boat.
- Set a surface marker and prepare a retreat route before diving.
- Enter with water-breathing support, food, strong armor, a weapon, blocks, and air-pocket materials.
- Use cover to reach the upper elder when practical, then clear the two wing elders.
- Mark dead ends and establish sealed staging rooms as you explore.
- Apply the edition-specific Mining Fatigue plan: milk resets on Java; protected, efficient mining is the Bedrock solution.
- After all three elders are dead and the effect expires, collect the eight gold blocks and choose whether to mine prismarine, harvest sponges, drain the monument, or build a farm.
