Jitsi Meet is the best starting point for most people who want a browser-based meeting service on their own VPS. It has an open-source, self-hosting-focused distribution with Debian packages and Docker options. Choose BigBlueButton instead when your meetings are really classes, webinars, or structured presentations; its production guide specifies a much larger dedicated server. Choose Nextcloud Talk when your organization already uses Nextcloud and wants calls, chat, files, and collaboration together. Choose LiveKit when you are building a custom real-time application rather than deploying a ready-made meeting room.
There is no honest, universal “maximum participants per VPS” number for these products. Video layout, cameras, screen sharing, recording, codecs, network paths, and concurrent rooms change the load. The safest approach is to match the software’s workflow to your use case, provision the documented baseline where one exists, and measure your own traffic before promising capacity.

| Primary need | Best fit | Why | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| General browser meetings | Jitsi Meet | Turnkey, open-source conferencing with self-hosting guides, Debian packages, and Docker deployment. | You must operate DNS, TLS, media networking, updates, and capacity planning yourself. |
| Classes, webinars, and formal presentations | BigBlueButton | Designed around education and structured online events, with production guidance for recordings, presentations, and dedicated capacity. | The published production baseline is substantially larger than a typical small VPS. |
| Calls inside an existing collaboration suite | Nextcloud Talk | Combines video, audio, chat, and collaboration in the Nextcloud environment. | Load increases with concurrent active participants; integrated signaling is aimed at small and medium installations. |
| A custom video product | LiveKit | Provides a deployment-oriented real-time media foundation for an application you design. | It is not a ready-made meeting-room portal; you own the application, identity, interface, and workflows. |
These are workflow recommendations, not a speed ranking. The available official material does not include a controlled, same-hardware participant benchmark across all four projects, so claims that one is universally fastest or supports a fixed number of users would be misleading.
What self-hosting videoconferencing on a VPS involves
A VPS gives you a public virtual machine, an operating system, an IP address, and a quota of CPU, memory, disk, and network transfer. The conferencing software adds the media and web layers. Participants still connect from their browsers or mobile apps, while your server handles signaling, room state, authentication hooks, media forwarding or routing, and optional recording.

WebRTC is sensitive to transport and browser security. A public DNS name and a trusted HTTPS certificate are not cosmetic: Jitsi’s self-hosting guidance says an internet server with a certificate for a registered domain is the best option, and Nextcloud documents that HTTPS is required for browser WebRTC calls. A deployment that works only over an IP address or an untrusted certificate may fail in browsers or on mobile clients even when the service appears healthy on the server.
Self-hosting also means operating the surrounding system:

Jitsi Meet: the default choice for general meetings
Why Jitsi fits a typical VPS
Jitsi describes the project as a set of open-source projects for deploying secure, scalable, easy-to-use video-conferencing platforms. Its documentation offers both Debian-package and Docker paths, which makes it practical when you want a conventional Linux installation or an infrastructure-as-code workflow. The browser-first experience is a good match for ad-hoc team calls, community meetings, support sessions, and links that people can open without installing a desktop client.
Jitsi’s guides do not publish one universal VPS size that guarantees a participant count. Treat CPU, memory, bandwidth, and recording storage as variables driven by your rooms and media settings. A single room with many cameras and screen sharing can be more demanding than several small audio-heavy rooms, and recording changes both CPU and disk requirements.

Current quick-start prerequisites
The current quick-start path supports Debian 12 (Bookworm) or newer and Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble Numbat) or newer. You need root or sudo access, nginx, OpenJDK 17, DNS for the hostname, and a trusted certificate; the documentation specifically calls out the certificate requirement for mobile clients.
Jitsi deployment sequence
- Provision the host. Use a current supported Debian or Ubuntu image with a public IPv4 address. Add IPv6 when your network policy and clients support it.
- Create DNS records. Point an A record to the VPS and add an AAAA record only when IPv6 is correctly routed and firewalled. Wait for propagation before requesting a certificate.
- Install prerequisites. Update the operating system, install nginx and OpenJDK 17, and follow the project’s Debian-package or Docker instructions. Keep the installation method consistent rather than mixing package and container files.
- Issue trusted TLS. Use the hostname in the certificate, enable automatic renewal, and verify renewal before inviting users. Browsers and mobile apps should show a normal trusted connection.
- Open documented network ports. Permit the web ports and the UDP media range required by the Jitsi version and deployment. If participants frequently fail to connect from corporate or mobile networks, review TURN and media-routing settings instead of only increasing CPU.
- Create a test room. Check camera and microphone permissions in Chromium- or Firefox-based browsers, join from a separate network, test screen sharing, and confirm that mobile clients accept the certificate.
- Instrument before scaling. Watch CPU saturation, memory pressure, network throughput, packet loss, and disk growth during a representative meeting. Record the room size and features used so future capacity decisions are based on your traffic.
When Jitsi is not the best fit
Jitsi is a weaker choice when the central requirement is a classroom workflow with formal presentation controls, persistent course structure, or a large recording archive. It can be extended, but you should validate the exact moderation, breakout, recording, and authentication features you need before committing to an operational design.
BigBlueButton: choose it for teaching and structured events
What makes it different
BigBlueButton is oriented toward online classes, webinars, presentations, and other events where the host needs a structured session rather than an informal meeting link. That focus affects the server decision: recording storage, presentation handling, moderation, and predictable dedicated resources matter as much as the video feed.
Published BigBlueButton 3.0 production baseline
The current 3.0 production installation guidance specifies the following starting point. It is a dedicated-production baseline, not a universal capacity guarantee.

| Requirement | Published value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Ubuntu 22.04, 64-bit | Use the supported image specified by the 3.0 installation guide. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM plus swap | Baseline for production installation. |
| CPU | 8 CPU cores | High single-thread performance is recommended; virtual core counts alone do not describe real capacity. |
| Free disk | 500 GB | For recordings; the guide states 50 GB when recording is disabled. |
| Network | 250 Mbit/s symmetrical | Published production baseline for upload and download capacity. |
| Firewall | TCP 80 and 443; UDP 16384–32768 | Open these documented ranges on the host and any upstream firewall. |
| Identity and addressing | Hostname for an SSL certificate; IPv4 and IPv6 | The hostname must resolve correctly before certificate setup. |
BigBlueButton recommends dedicated compute instances for cloud deployments. Shared, heavily oversubscribed VPS hardware can produce variable single-thread performance even when the advertised core and memory totals look sufficient.
Planning a BigBlueButton installation
- Deploy the specified 64-bit Ubuntu release on a dedicated instance with the memory, swap, cores, disk, and symmetrical bandwidth listed above.
- Assign a stable hostname and verify both IPv4 and IPv6 reachability. Create the DNS records before installation.
- Obtain a trusted SSL certificate and confirm that ports 80 and 443 reach the correct host.
- Open UDP 16384–32768 end to end. Check the VPS provider’s network firewall as well as the operating-system firewall.
- Install the current BigBlueButton 3.0 release according to its production guide, then perform the project’s post-install checks.
- Decide whether recordings stay on the VPS or are copied to separate storage. If recording is enabled, monitor free space and test a retention policy.
- Run a class-sized rehearsal that includes webcams, screen sharing, presentations, moderation, and recording. Test from a second network and a mobile device.
Capacity and recording trade-offs
The 500 GB figure is storage for recordings, not a promise that the disk will last indefinitely. Recording duration, resolution, number of sessions, and retention determine how quickly it fills. Disabling recording changes the documented free-disk requirement to 50 GB, but it does not remove CPU, memory, or network demand from live sessions.
Nextcloud Talk: best when Nextcloud is already your workspace
Nextcloud Talk combines video, audio, chat, and collaboration inside an existing Nextcloud deployment. That integration can reduce context switching and simplify account management for organizations that already use Nextcloud files, calendars, and user directories. It is usually a poor reason to deploy an entire collaboration suite solely for occasional video calls.
Nextcloud’s system-requirements documentation warns that load rises with concurrent active participants. Its integrated signaling option is described as suitable for small and medium installations. Size the VPS from the number of simultaneously active people, camera usage, screen sharing, and any other Nextcloud workloads sharing the host; do not treat a low-traffic file server’s current utilization as proof that it can absorb a busy meeting.

Nextcloud Talk deployment checklist
- Run a supported Nextcloud release on a VPS with a public hostname and trusted HTTPS.
- Keep video calls on HTTPS from the first test. Browser WebRTC requires it, and an untrusted certificate can block camera and microphone use.
- Install and configure Talk using the version-matched Nextcloud documentation. Decide whether integrated signaling is adequate for your expected concurrency.
- Separate heavy file-transfer or background jobs from the meeting host when they compete for CPU, memory, or disk I/O.
- Test calls with the maximum expected active participants, cameras on, and screen sharing enabled. Observe the effect on both Talk and the rest of Nextcloud.
- Back up the Nextcloud database, configuration, and user files, and document how a Talk-related failure will be diagnosed without restoring the entire service blindly.
LiveKit: a media foundation for developers
LiveKit is the right direction when the product you need does not exist yet: a branded meeting interface, an embedded support call, a game-community voice and video feature, or a workflow that needs custom authentication and event handling. Its official virtual-machine guide focuses on production deployment, including media-ingress networking, rather than presenting a turnkey meeting-room application.
That distinction changes the project scope. A LiveKit server does not by itself answer how users discover rooms, sign in, receive permissions, moderate conversations, record sessions, present slides, or recover from abuse. Your application must supply those policies and interfaces, while the VPS must provide reliable public networking and the media routes your design requires.
LiveKit deployment sequence
- Define the application’s room, identity, token, moderation, and recording model before selecting a VPS size.
- Provision a production virtual machine with a public hostname and trusted TLS, following the LiveKit VM guide for your chosen operating system.
- Plan media-ingress networking and firewall rules explicitly. A web port that works for signaling does not prove that media traffic can reach the server.
- Implement the client application, permission checks, reconnection behavior, and user-facing error states.
- Add metrics for room count, active publishers and subscribers, packet loss, bitrate, CPU, memory, and network throughput.
- Load-test with the codecs, layouts, and recording paths your application will actually use. Do not substitute a signaling-only test for a media test.
How to size a VPS without inventing a participant cap
Only BigBlueButton in the material here publishes a concrete production baseline. For Jitsi and Nextcloud Talk, the reviewed guides do not provide one universal VPS size; LiveKit sizing depends on the application and media topology. Use a capacity worksheet instead of copying a number from a different product.
| Dimension | Questions to answer | What to reserve |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | How many people publish camera video? Is there recording, transcoding, compositing, or intensive presentation handling? | Dedicated or predictable cores; prioritize high single-thread performance where the product recommends it. |
| Memory | How many rooms and other services share the host? Does the platform cache media or application data? | Headroom above normal usage, plus swap where the product’s baseline calls for it. |
| Network | Are streams forwarded to many subscribers? Are users behind restrictive networks? Is traffic symmetrical? | Sufficient sustained throughput, low packet loss, and the documented TCP/UDP ranges. |
| Disk | Are sessions recorded? How long are recordings retained? Are logs and backups local? | Separate recording and backup capacity or an explicit export policy; alerts before the disk is full. |
| Reliability | What happens if the VPS, certificate, or DNS fails during a meeting? | Monitoring, certificate-renewal checks, tested backups, and a recovery or alternate-host plan. |
Start with a small pilot, capture metrics during the busiest realistic meeting, then add safety margin. A participant count without the associated camera, screen-share, recording, codec, and network conditions is not a useful capacity promise.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Common operational problems and fixes
Browsers report an insecure connection or deny camera access
Confirm that the meeting hostname resolves to the VPS and that the certificate is trusted, current, and valid for that exact name. Renew the certificate before it expires, then retest in a private browser window and on a mobile network. For Nextcloud Talk, HTTPS is a hard WebRTC requirement; for Jitsi, the self-hosting guide also calls out a trusted certificate for mobile clients.
Recommended Free Tools
Users can join the room but have no audio or video
Check UDP media ports at every layer: the application configuration, operating-system firewall, VPS provider firewall, and any upstream router. Test from a network different from the server’s. If failures cluster on corporate or carrier networks, review the product’s TURN or relay configuration and confirm that media, not just the web page, can traverse the path.
The first meeting works, then later meetings fail
Inspect CPU throttling, memory pressure, network saturation, and disk growth during the failure window. Recordings and logs can silently consume storage; a full disk may break more than recording. Move archives to separate storage, set retention limits, and leave headroom rather than waiting for 100 percent utilization.
Performance varies between identical VPS plans
Virtual CPUs do not guarantee identical physical performance. BigBlueButton specifically emphasizes high single-thread performance and dedicated compute. If latency and frame delivery vary while your own metrics show no configuration change, test on a less-contended or dedicated instance before rewriting application settings.
An upgrade breaks clients or integrations
Read the project’s version-specific upgrade notes, take a restorable backup, and stage the update on a separate hostname when possible. Keep the previous configuration and package or container versions available for rollback. After upgrading, test browser permissions, mobile access, screen sharing, recording, and authentication—not only the landing page.

Security, privacy, and maintenance decisions
- Use a real hostname and TLS. Protect signaling and media setup with a trusted certificate and automate renewal checks.
- Minimize exposed services. Open only the documented web and media ports, restrict administration interfaces, and use key-based SSH with updates applied promptly.
- Control room access. Use waiting rooms, authenticated accounts, room passwords, or application-level tokens where the product supports them. Treat an unguessable URL as convenience, not authorization.
- Protect recordings. Recordings can contain personal or confidential information. Define who can access them, how long they are retained, and where backups are encrypted.
- Monitor the certificate and the media path. A green web check does not prove that UDP media works. Include a real browser call in periodic synthetic tests.
- Separate failure domains when stakes are high. Keep databases, recordings, and backups off the same disk when a single VPS outage would stop both service and recovery.
A practical decision framework
Pick Jitsi Meet if
- You need a conventional browser meeting service rather than a custom product.
- Your team can manage DNS, nginx, OpenJDK 17, TLS, firewall rules, and updates.
- You want Debian-package or Docker deployment options and will size the VPS from observed media usage.
Pick BigBlueButton if
- Classes, webinars, presentations, moderation, and recordings define the workflow.
- You can provide the published Ubuntu 22.04, 16 GB RAM plus swap, eight high-performance cores, network, disk, and port baseline.
- You are willing to use dedicated compute and operate recording storage deliberately.
Pick Nextcloud Talk if
- Nextcloud is already the organization’s collaboration hub.
- Keeping calls, chat, files, and users in one system matters more than deploying a standalone meeting service.
- Your expected concurrent active participation fits the documented small- or medium-installation signaling model, or you have a scaling plan.
Pick LiveKit if
- You have developers to build the user experience and authorization layer.
- You need embedded or highly customized real-time media behavior.
- You are prepared to design media ingress, observability, recording, moderation, and recovery rather than receiving them as a finished meeting product.
Final recommendation
For a new, self-hosted meeting service on a VPS, deploy Jitsi Meet first and validate it with real browser and mobile clients over the networks your audience uses. Move to BigBlueButton when education or webinar workflows justify its dedicated production baseline. Use Nextcloud Talk when the value comes from an existing Nextcloud workspace, and reserve LiveKit for a product you intend to build around a media platform. In every case, treat TLS, UDP reachability, recording storage, monitoring, backups, and measured concurrency as part of the software choice—not as afterthoughts.
