Short answer: The native Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 edition is the one to choose if you want its confirmed Vibrant Visuals setting and updated Super Mario Mash-Up pack. It is scheduled for October 27, 2026. If you already own Minecraft digitally on Switch, you can keep playing that version on Switch 2 when compatible, or use Mojang’s limited-time digital upgrade offer for the native edition. The main trade-off to know is that Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in split-screen and some other content.
What changes in the Switch 2 version?
A native edition with Vibrant Visuals
Mojang announced a native Minecraft edition optimized for Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for October 27, 2026. Its Vibrant Visuals setting is enabled by default. Mojang describes directional lighting and volumetric fog; Nintendo lists enhanced lighting, shadows, and water reflections. These are feature descriptions, not promises of a specific resolution or frame rate. Mojang’s announcement and Nintendo’s product listing describe the announced features.

Vibrant Visuals is not available in every situation: Nintendo says it is unavailable in split-screen and in certain Marketplace worlds or content. If you play those modes, do not assume the visual setting will be active.
Switch worlds can carry over
Nintendo says players can carry over worlds from the Switch version and continue where they left off. Its listing does not spell out every transfer condition or every possible Marketplace-content edge case, so check the current in-game or Nintendo instructions for your specific world and content.
#1 Best Overall
- Build whatever you can imagine in your own infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
The Super Mario Mash-Up pack is updated
The native Switch 2 edition includes the Super Mario Mash-Up pack, updated for Vibrant Visuals. Nintendo lists a themed world, 15 music tracks, and 40 player skins. The pack is exclusive to Nintendo versions of Minecraft. Nintendo’s listing gives the included contents.
What is not established about performance?
Mojang says the native edition is optimized for Switch 2 hardware, but the official materials reviewed do not give a frame-rate target, resolution, draw distance, loading-time comparison, or measured Switch-versus-Switch-2 benchmark. The announced release date is still in the future as of October 13, 2026, so there are no post-launch results to cite here. Treat “optimized” as an official description, not a numerical performance guarantee.

Which version should you play?
| Your situation | What makes sense |
|---|---|
| You already own Minecraft digitally on Switch and are happy with it | Keep playing the Switch edition if it suits you. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible Switch games, but compatibility is not guaranteed for every title. You can also consider the Minecraft-specific digital upgrade offer if you want the native edition. |
| You own the digital Switch edition and want Vibrant Visuals or the updated Mario pack | Consider upgrading to the native Switch 2 Standard Edition. The limited-time offer is free in most territories through the end of January 2027, with stated prices in Japan and Taiwan; see the offer details below. |
| You do not own Minecraft and have a Switch 2 | The native Switch 2 edition is the straightforward choice if you want the announced visual features and updated Mario pack. A physical retail edition is announced; compare its local price with any digital option available to you. |
| Split-screen is central to how you play | Choose based on the play mode rather than assuming the new visual setting will apply: Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in split-screen. |
| You want online or cross-platform multiplayer | Nintendo says cross-platform play requires a Microsoft Account, and online multiplayer requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. |
How the digital upgrade offer works
Mojang’s preorder announcement says owners of the digital Minecraft for Nintendo Switch edition can get the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition for free in most territories through January 31, 2027. The stated exceptions are Japan, where it costs 100 JPY, and Taiwan, where it costs 30 NTD. Check the Nintendo eShop offer in your territory before relying on those terms.
