Your Minecraft purchase upgrade and your existing content are separate questions. Minecraft’s Switch 2 edition launches October 27, 2026, and eligible owners of the digital Switch game can get the digital Standard Edition upgrade free in most territories through January 2027. But Minecraft has not published a Switch-to-Switch 2 procedure confirming how existing DLC, Marketplace purchases, or locally saved worlds will carry over. Keep the same Microsoft account for Marketplace purchases, and do not assume every entitlement or world will appear automatically.
What the Switch 2 upgrade offer includes
Minecraft’s October 7, 2026 announcement says the Switch 2 edition launches October 27. If you own the digital version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch, you can obtain the digital Standard Edition upgrade through the Nintendo eShop for free in most territories through the end of January 2027. The announced charge is 100 JPY in Japan and 30 NTD in Taiwan. The offer is for digital Switch owners; the announcement does not extend it to physical-game owners. Minecraft’s pre-order and upgrade announcement also describes discounted upgrades to the Deluxe and Ultimate digital editions, but does not give prices for every territory.

Minecraft also announced a physical retail edition. The announcement does not explain how the new editions’ bundled content interacts with entitlements you already own, so the bundles should not be treated as confirmation that separately purchased packs transfer—or that they are included again at no cost.
Will your existing DLC and Marketplace purchases transfer?
As of October 9, 2026, Minecraft has not published Switch 2-specific steps or confirmed the outcome for existing Marketplace purchases, Switch-purchased DLC, or locally stored worlds. The August release announcement said digital-upgrade details would follow; the October pre-order announcement described the game upgrade and new editions, but not a transfer process for those existing items. The precise migration result remains unresolved. The August announcement and the October announcement do not provide a DLC or world-transfer procedure.

Bedrock Marketplace purchases
Minecraft’s general Bedrock guidance says Marketplace content syncs across Bedrock versions when it was purchased while signed in to the same Microsoft account. On Switch, sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use; Minecraft’s Nintendo Switch sign-in guide explains that account link. This is a reason to use your existing account, not a guarantee that every purchase will be available automatically in the Switch 2 edition.
DLC bought in the legacy Switch edition
Older Minecraft instructions cover the earlier move from Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition to Switch Bedrock. They said to launch the legacy game to sync recent purchases, then launch Bedrock; DLC bought in the legacy edition stayed on the Switch rather than carrying to other devices. Those instructions are historical and do not establish what happens in the Switch 2 transition. The same guidance described converting old-format worlds to Bedrock on the same Switch, not transferring them to Switch 2. Minecraft’s 2019 world-transfer guidance concerns that earlier transition only.

Nintendo eShop purchases and Nintendo Accounts
Nintendo says digital purchases cannot be transferred from one Nintendo Account to another. That is distinct from Minecraft Marketplace syncing through a Microsoft account: the two accounts serve different purposes. Nintendo also says downloaded content loaded as a virtual game card on a console can be accessed by other users of that console; that console-sharing option is not an account-to-account purchase transfer. The official material cited here does not say whether locally saved Switch worlds will be copied, converted, or otherwise made available in the Switch 2 edition, nor does it provide a Switch-to-Switch 2 procedure. Marketplace account syncing does not by itself establish that local world files will migrate.

What changes for Minecoins on October 27
Minecraft announced a Nintendo-specific Minecoin change that begins October 27, 2026. It is a future change as of October 9, not a policy already in effect. From October 27, Minecoins newly purchased in Minecraft on a Nintendo device—Switch or Switch 2—will be usable only on Nintendo systems. Minecoins bought on another device will no longer be usable for Marketplace purchases on Nintendo devices after that date. Minecraft’s Minecoin announcement sets out the wallet transition.
Coins you already own
Minecoins owned before October 27 move to a Legacy Wallet. Minecraft says they remain usable on compatible platforms, do not expire, and are spent before coins added after launch. New Minecoins purchased on a Nintendo device go into a separate Nintendo Wallet. The 700 Minecoins in Deluxe and 1,000 in Ultimate are included Minecoins, and Minecraft says included coins and coins purchased in Minecraft on a Nintendo device must be used in the Nintendo ecosystem.

What to do before upgrading
- Check which Switch game you own. The free Standard Edition offer is stated for owners of the digital Minecraft for Nintendo Switch. The announcement does not say physical owners qualify.
- Use the same Microsoft account. Link the account associated with your Bedrock Marketplace purchases when signing in to Minecraft on Switch 2. This follows Minecraft’s general purchase-sync guidance, but does not replace a Switch 2 transfer confirmation.
- Keep your Nintendo Account straight. Nintendo eShop purchases are tied to Nintendo Account ownership; do not confuse that with Microsoft-account Marketplace syncing.
- Do not delete or trade in your old console on the assumption that worlds have moved. No Switch-to-Switch 2 world-transfer steps are documented in the cited official material. Keep access to your old Switch until Minecraft or Nintendo provides instructions that cover your worlds.
- Plan around the Minecoin date. If you have coins purchased before October 27, they follow the announced Legacy Wallet rules; purchases made on Nintendo devices from that date use the Nintendo Wallet and Nintendo ecosystem.
- Compare the edition bundles in your region. The Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate upgrade offers differ in included add-ons, Character Creator items, and Minecoins. Check the Nintendo eShop for your territory’s live terms rather than assuming a price from another region.
