The safest way to kill one is to separate or kill its rider first, then attack from range behind high ground, a two-block opening, or another protected position. Shields, trenches, lava and iron golems can help control its movement, but its roar can knock you back and damage you.

Ravagers drop a saddle. The raid around them can also yield emeralds, crossbows, totems of undying, ominous banners, iron axes and witch drops, with loot and encounter details varying between Java and Bedrock Editions and between game versions.
What is a Ravager in Minecraft?
A Ravager is a large hostile beast tied exclusively to village raids. It does not appear as a normal wilderness mob; you encounter it as one of the stronger threats in a raid wave. A Ravager can spawn with an illager riding it, turning the encounter into two simultaneous problems: the beast’s charge and roar, plus the rider’s ranged, magical or melee attacks.

Ravagers can carry a pillager or evoker. In Java Edition, a vindicator can also ride one; Bedrock Edition does not use vindicator riders. That distinction matters because a mounted ravager is not just a stronger target. Killing the rider removes an additional attack pattern and makes the remaining beast much easier to manage.
Ravagers resist knockback, so ordinary hits do not reliably push them away. They can also damage crops and leaves while pursuing a target, which means an unprotected village can lose farmland and cover during the battle. Treat the fight as a terrain-and-position problem rather than trying to trade hits in the open.

How many waves are in a Minecraft raid?
Raid length is set by difficulty. Easy has three waves, Normal has five, and Hard has seven. A higher Bad Omen level can add one extra wave whose composition matches the final wave. If you are planning supplies or a raid farm, account for that possible additional wave rather than preparing only for the base difficulty count.
| Difficulty | Base raid waves |
|---|---|
| Easy | 3 |
| Normal | 5 |
| Hard | 7 |
The exact group of illagers can vary with edition and game version, but the combat tutorial describes a useful progression: early waves emphasize pillagers and vindicators; Ravagers enter in later waves; witches appear in the middle of the raid; and evokers and mounted Ravagers feature in the final waves. Use that progression to decide when to conserve arrows, food and defensive blocks.
Why the final waves are dangerous
Final waves combine several threats that punish a single defensive plan. A Ravager can force you out of cover, an evoker can create vexes, and a witch can add ranged damage and support. When a Ravager is mounted, remove the rider whenever the terrain lets you target it safely. Leaving an evoker or Java vindicator on the beast turns every attempt to finish the Ravager into a second attack window.
Prepare the village before starting the raid
Preparation determines whether the fight stays controlled. Complete these checks before entering the village with Bad Omen.
- Secure every villager. Put villagers inside houses or protected cells and close entrances. A raid is easier when you are not forced to rescue villagers while fighting.
- Bring durable armor, a shield and food. On Hard, an unarmored Ravager hit deals 18 HP, or nine hearts. Do not treat an exposed hit as survivable just because you have full hunger.
- Carry a bow or crossbow and spare ammunition. Ranged combat is the safest general method, especially when the beast has a rider.
- Pack spare blocks. Blocks let you close gaps, create a two-block firing opening and repair a route that a pursuing Ravager or raid group has disrupted.
- Plan a fallback position. Choose a house, wall, roof or elevated platform that you can reach without crossing open ground.
- Protect crops and flammable structures. Ravagers can damage crops and leaves. If you plan to use lava, keep the trap away from villagers and buildings that can burn.
- Keep an iron golem nearby if available. A golem can absorb pressure while you attack from another angle, but it is support rather than a replacement for cover.
Use the village bell as a locator
During the raid, ring the village bell to help locate raiders. Use it when the raid bar remains active but the next group is not visible. Once you have an approximate direction, search from cover instead of running through the village center; a Ravager encountered in the open can close the distance before you have a safe firing position.

How to defeat a Ravager: a safe procedure
- Identify the edition and the rider. Before engaging, note whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and whether the Ravager carries a pillager, evoker or, in Java, a vindicator. The rider determines which attack you must avoid first.
- Choose terrain that limits the charge. High ground, a trench, a wall or a two-block opening gives you time between shots. Do not rely on knockback to hold the Ravager in place because it resists it.
- Separate the rider when possible. Circle around cover until the rider is exposed while the Ravager remains blocked or below you. A mounted evoker can summon vexes, and a mounted vindicator in Java adds heavy melee pressure. Removing that rider first simplifies the rest of the fight.
- Fire from range and retreat between shots. Keep the Ravager outside melee distance. The combat tutorial says a Power V bow takes about five to six arrows to defeat one, but that is an instructional estimate rather than a guarantee for every weapon, difficulty, edition or firing condition.
- Use the shield deliberately. A shield can trigger a brief Ravager stun, giving you a moment to reposition or land an attack. The Ravager’s roar can still knock you backward and deal damage, so raise the shield as part of a retreat plan rather than standing directly in front of it.
- Close the angle if the beast reaches you. Move behind your prepared wall or through the two-block opening. Place blocks if necessary, but leave yourself a route out; sealing yourself into a dead end turns the Ravager’s charge into unavoidable damage.
- Use lava only as a controlled trap. Lava can slow or damage a Ravager while you attack from safety, but it can also injure villagers and ignite buildings. Deploy it where the village is protected from fire and where you can still reach the target without stepping into the flow.
- Finish with controlled melee only after the position is secure. If you must use a sword or other melee weapon, attack from a protected corner, trench edge or opening and retreat immediately after each exchange. Do not chase a wounded Ravager into open terrain.
Why ranged attacks are the default
Distance removes the Ravager’s strongest advantage: its ability to force you into a close-range exchange. A bow or crossbow also lets you keep a rider in view while the beast absorbs or blocks some approaches. High ground and a two-block opening are particularly useful because they limit the Ravager’s route without depending on a long knockback chain.
Using an iron golem as a distraction
An iron golem can draw the Ravager’s attention and give you a safer attack angle. Stay far enough away that the beast cannot switch targets and reach you immediately. If the golem moves away from the village, do not follow into open ground; reposition and continue firing from cover.
How to handle each Ravager rider
Pillager rider
A pillager adds ranged pressure while the Ravager closes the distance. Keep a wall or high-ground edge between yourself and the rider whenever possible. Once the rider is exposed, remove it before committing to the beast. If you focus only on the Ravager, the pillager can continue firing while you retreat.
Evoker rider
An evoker is the most urgent rider to separate because it can summon vexes. Vexes can attack around the cover that would normally make a Ravager manageable, so target the evoker as soon as you have a clear and safe shot. If vexes appear, stay inside your protected position, block alternate entrances and avoid abandoning cover just to chase the Ravager.

Java Edition can generate a vindicator riding a Ravager. The vindicator adds high-damage melee pressure, making an open-ground approach especially dangerous. Use elevation or a narrow opening to remove it, then return to the ranged Ravager plan. Bedrock Edition does not use vindicator riders, so a Bedrock encounter will not contain this specific combination.

Raid priorities beyond the Ravager
Ravagers are visually imposing, but raid survival depends on threat order. Prioritize targets that can either remove your cover or create additional attackers:
- Mounted rider first: especially an evoker, because vexes can attack from angles the Ravager cannot.
- Unmounted evokers: their magic can create vexes and force you out of a static defense.
- Witches: their attacks and support effects can prolong the fight while you are already managing a Ravager.
- Ravagers: eliminate them before they reach villagers, crops or your fallback position.
This is a priority order, not a rule that overrides safety. If an evoker is exposed and a Ravager is about to hit you, retreat first, regain cover and then resume the order from a position where you can actually land shots.
What does a Ravager drop?
The Ravager’s listed direct drop is a saddle. The beast does not provide a large personal loot table, so do not expect the raid’s full rewards to appear every time you kill one. Most of the valuable haul is associated with defeating the raid rather than with the Ravager itself.
Other loot associated with raids
Raid rewards can include emeralds, crossbows, totems of undying, ominous banners, iron axes and witch drops. Java and Bedrock Editions have differences in raid loot tables and behavior, and those tables can also change with game versions. Treat a list from a farm tutorial or older guide as edition- and version-specific instead of assuming every listed item appears identically in your world.
Can you farm Ravagers and raid loot?
Raid farms generally funnel incoming raiders into a controlled killing area. That approach can make Ravagers easier to handle because the farm supplies the containment that a village wall or trench would otherwise provide. The farm still needs to be designed for the correct edition and game version: Java and Bedrock use different spawning rules, raid behavior and loot outcomes.
Before building or copying a farm, verify four things:

- Edition: Java and Bedrock are not interchangeable for raid-farm mechanics.
- Game version: spawning and raid behavior can change after updates.
- Rider assumptions: a Java design may account for vindicator riders that never appear in Bedrock.
- Loot expectations: the items and rates shown by a design must match the edition and version you actually play.
Label your own build with its edition and tested version. If a farm suddenly produces different groups, misses waves or yields different items after an update, stop and recheck its spawning and loot assumptions before changing the killing chamber.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences
The clearest Ravager-specific distinction is rider composition. Other raid details—including wave composition, spawning rules, loot tables and farm behavior—can differ by edition and version, so a strategy that works in one environment should not be presented as universal.
| Feature | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Possible Ravager riders | Pillager, evoker or vindicator | Pillager or evoker; vindicator riders are not used |
| Farm and loot assumptions | Use a design and loot table tested for the specific Java version | Use a design and loot table tested for the specific Bedrock version |
When following instructions, record the edition and version before you begin. This is especially important for raids because the visible wave count can remain familiar while the groups, spawning locations or farm output differ.

The raid bar is active but you cannot find the Ravager
Ring the village bell and use the sound and highlighted location to narrow the search. Check the village perimeter from protected positions rather than crossing every field. Once you find the group, build or use cover before drawing the Ravager’s attention.

Your shield saves you from a hit but you are thrown backward
That is the roar’s knockback effect. Keep open space behind you or place a wall that prevents a dangerous fall. Use the brief stun to retreat or change angles instead of trying to remain in front of the Ravager for another melee exchange.
Lava is hurting villagers or buildings
Stop using the trap until the village is protected from fire. Move villagers into secure cells, use stone or another fire-safe barrier and place the lava where it cannot flow through homes or farmland. If you cannot guarantee that control, return to ranged attacks from high ground.
A raid lasts longer than expected
Check the difficulty and Bad Omen level. Easy, Normal and Hard have different base wave counts, and a higher Bad Omen level can add an extra wave matching the final wave’s composition. Prepare for the additional group rather than assuming the raid is bugged.
A copied raid farm no longer works
Confirm the edition and exact game version used by the farm’s instructions. Compare its assumed spawning rules, rider composition and loot table with your current version. A Java design may fail in Bedrock even when the layout looks identical, and an update can invalidate a previously reliable arrangement.
