1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose Minecraft Realms if a small group wants a private, always-online world with almost no administration. Choose dedicated server hosting when you need more simultaneous players, configurable server software, mod/plugin or add-on control, or a provider-managed machine. Match editions first: Java and Bedrock Realms are separate ecosystems, and neither option lets Java and Bedrock players join the same Realm.
The practical decision comes down to edition, simultaneous players, recurring cost, setup and maintenance, backups, and how much control your group actually needs.

What you are comparing
Minecraft Realms
Mojang defines a Realm as “a subscription to your own personal Minecraft server, where you can easily and safely play online with friends in shared worlds across devices.” It is a managed service: Minecraft keeps the world available, supplies backups, and provides world slots while you invite players through the game. You do not have to leave a computer running or configure your home network.
Realms is designed for a private group rather than a public community. Friends can play without buying their own subscription, but the plan’s simultaneous-player limit still applies. The Realms page says invitations can reach as many as 10,000 people; that is an invitation-list figure, not a promise that 10,000 people can play at once.

Dedicated server hosting
A dedicated server is a separate Minecraft server process running on hardware you control or rent. “Dedicated” describes the server environment, not one specific purchasing model:
- Self-hosting: you run Mojang’s Java or Bedrock server software on your own computer or rented virtual machine. The software download is free, but you provide the hardware, internet connection, power, security, administration, backups and monitoring.
- Managed hosting: a hosting company supplies the machine, network connection and control panel. You still choose and maintain the Minecraft configuration, but the provider handles much of the operating-system and uptime work. Prices, resources and policies differ by provider.
Mojang’s own Java-server documentation warns that running a multiplayer server yourself “gets kind of involved.” That extra work is the trade for control.
Match the Minecraft edition before comparing services
Java and Bedrock are different server ecosystems. A Java Realm accepts Java Edition players on Windows, macOS and Linux. A Bedrock Realm accepts supported Bedrock clients, including Android, iOS, Windows, Amazon Fire, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo devices and Chromebook. Java and Bedrock players cannot join the same Realm, so a mixed-edition group must first decide which edition everyone will use or select a technically compatible third-party server solution rather than assuming Realms will bridge the gap.
| Edition | Realms compatibility | Official dedicated software | Typical client platforms noted by Mojang |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Java Realms only | Java server software; compatible Java installation required | Windows, macOS and Linux |
| Bedrock Edition | Bedrock Realms only | Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS), with Windows and Ubuntu/Linux downloads | Android, iOS, Windows, Amazon Fire, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo devices and Chromebook, where supported |
Check the edition installed on every player’s device before paying. “Minecraft on Windows” can refer to Bedrock or Java, while console and mobile versions are generally Bedrock.
Current Realms plans and player limits
The following figures are from the current US Minecraft listing checked October 14, 2026. Prices and catalog contents can change by region or over time, so treat them as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent price guarantee.
| Plan | Monthly price (US listing) | Simultaneous players | Included distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Realms for Bedrock | $3.99 USD per month | Owner plus two players (three people total) | Personal 24/7 server, friends play free, backups and three world slots |
| Realms Plus for Bedrock | $7.99 USD per month | Owner plus ten players (11 people total) | Realms features plus Marketplace Pass access to a rotating catalog of more than 150 items |
| Realms for Java | $7.99 USD per month | Owner plus ten players (11 people total) | Personal 24/7 server, friends play free, backups and three world slots |
The owner occupies a simultaneous-play slot. A Java plan therefore does not mean ten friends plus the owner; it means the owner and up to ten friends. Bedrock’s lower-priced plan is suitable only when no more than two invited players need to join the owner at the same time.
What the managed features mean in practice
- Always online: the Realm remains available when its owner is offline, so nobody has to keep a home PC running.
- Backups: Realms includes free backups, reducing the risk of losing a shared world after an unwanted change or mistake. You should still make an independent copy before major experiments.
- Three world slots: the subscription includes three saved world slots. They are useful for rotating maps or testing without deleting the primary world, but they do not raise the simultaneous-player cap.
- Friends play free: invited players do not need their own Realms subscription. They still need the relevant Minecraft edition and a platform that supports it.
- Marketplace Pass on Realms Plus: the Bedrock Plus plan includes access to a catalog of more than 150 Marketplace Pass items that rotates monthly. Catalog availability is tied to the subscription and may change.
What a dedicated server requires
Self-hosted Java server
Mojang’s Java server download is free, but the server machine must have a compatible Java installation and an operating system that can run the software. Players outside your home network commonly require port forwarding and firewall rules. Those changes expose a service to the internet, so use a strong operator account, keep Java and server software updated, and restrict administrative access.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Choose the machine: use a computer or virtual machine with enough CPU, memory and storage for the world, view distance, mods and peak player count. The free download does not provide any hardware.
- Install the required Java runtime: use the Java version supported by the server release you intend to run. A mismatched runtime can prevent startup or produce version errors.
- Download and launch the official server: place the server files in a dedicated folder, run the server once, accept the EULA as required by Mojang’s instructions, then stop it before editing settings.
- Configure the world: set the world name, difficulty, game mode, view or simulation distance and operator permissions in the server configuration.
- Open networking only as needed: configure the router’s port forwarding and the computer’s firewall, then give players the correct address. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work.
- Operate it continuously: schedule backups, install updates during a maintenance window, monitor disk space and memory, and test restoration rather than assuming a backup is usable.
Self-hosted Bedrock Dedicated Server
Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is Mojang’s official Bedrock server software, with downloads for Windows and Ubuntu/Linux. Its listed requirements include a compatible 64-bit operating system, broadband internet and 4 GB of RAM. Those are baseline requirements, not a guarantee of smooth performance for every world or player count.
BDS still requires installation, configuration, network exposure, updates, access control and backups. Console and mobile players must be able to reach the server through the supported Bedrock networking path; verify platform support before committing a group to self-hosting.
Managed dedicated hosting
Managed hosting removes much of the machine and network administration, but it is not identical to Realms. You normally receive a control panel, a selectable server version and some ability to install mods, plugins or add-ons. Before subscribing, compare the actual allocation and policies rather than choosing on the word “dedicated.”
Recommended Free Tools
| Check before purchase | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| CPU model or guaranteed share | World generation, redstone-heavy areas, entities and modded workloads can be CPU-bound. |
| RAM allocation and upgrade path | More players, larger view distances and modpacks increase memory use; advertised system RAM may not equal RAM assigned to your server. |
| Storage type and capacity | Fast storage improves loading and leaves room for world history and backups. |
| Datacenter location | Distance affects latency. Select a region near most players. |
| Backups and restore controls | Confirm frequency, retention, off-server storage and whether you can restore without support intervention. |
| Player-slot policy | Some plans meter slots, while others allow any count subject to resources. Read the definition of a slot. |
| Mod, plugin and add-on support | Java mods/plugins and Bedrock add-ons are not interchangeable. Confirm supported loaders and versions. |
| Network and DDoS protection | Protection, filtering and a dedicated address vary widely and can affect availability. |
| Support, cancellation and data access | Check response hours, export options, billing terms and what happens to your world after cancellation. |
Official software being free does not make self-hosting free. Budget for a machine or hosting subscription, electricity, broadband, storage, backups and your own time. Mojang does not publish provider-neutral prices, universal uptime guarantees or a single player cap for all dedicated hosts.
How to compare the real cost
Realms has a clear recurring charge: $3.99 per month for the entry Bedrock plan or $7.99 per month for Bedrock Plus and Java on the US listing dated October 14, 2026. Friends do not need separate Realms subscriptions, so the owner’s fee covers the shared service for the invited group. The trade-off is a fixed capacity and less control.
A self-hosted server shifts the bill into several categories. The official Java and Bedrock downloads cost nothing, but a suitable computer or virtual machine, electricity, broadband, storage, independent backup space and the operator’s time all have value. A home machine also has to remain powered and connected whenever players expect access. A managed host replaces those infrastructure tasks with a monthly invoice, but the invoice can vary with CPU, RAM, storage, location, backup retention and the number of permitted players. Compare the complete package rather than comparing a Realms subscription with a software download.
There is no universal dedicated-host price or uptime promise to use as a benchmark. Read the provider’s slot definition, renewal and cancellation terms, backup policy and data-export rules. A low headline price may exclude backups, upgrades or enough allocated memory for the configuration you want.

Capacity, invitations and administration
Planning by the size of your chat group is a common mistake. Realms can list up to 10,000 invited friends, while the active session remains limited to the plan: owner plus two on entry Bedrock, or owner plus ten on Bedrock Plus and Java. Count the highest number likely to be online at the same time, including the owner.
Dedicated hosting does not automatically mean unlimited players. Its practical capacity depends on CPU time, RAM, storage performance, view or simulation distance, entities, redstone activity, mods and the provider’s own policy. A host may sell a nominal slot count that does not match the workload your world creates. Ask what resources are reserved and how upgrades work.
Administration is another form of capacity. Realms largely assigns maintenance to Mojang. With self-hosting, someone must respond to failed updates, full disks, access requests, corrupted worlds and network changes. Managed hosting reduces operating-system work, but you still administer the Minecraft version, permissions and installed content unless the plan specifically includes that service.
Realms versus dedicated hosting at a glance
| Decision factor | Realms | Dedicated server hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Subscribe, select a world and invite players in Minecraft. | Install and configure software yourself, or use a host’s control panel. |
| Availability | Managed and online without the owner’s computer running. | Depends on your machine, internet connection or host’s infrastructure. |
| Simultaneous players | Fixed by the plan: owner plus two on entry Bedrock, or owner plus ten on Realms Plus and Java. | Determined by hardware, software configuration and the provider’s policy. |
| Edition | Java and Bedrock Realms are separate. | Choose Java or Bedrock server software; cross-edition play is not automatic. |
| Backups | Included free, with three world slots. | Only as good as the host’s or operator’s backup plan; verify restoration. |
| Customization | Limited to the Realms feature set and supported Marketplace content. | Much broader control over versions, plugins, mods, add-ons and server settings, subject to compatibility. |
| Administration | Minimal server maintenance. | Updates, permissions, monitoring, security and troubleshooting remain someone’s responsibility. |
| Cost model | Predictable subscription shown above. | Variable hosting or hardware cost plus network, power, storage and administration expenses. |
When Realms is the better choice
- Your group is small enough for the plan’s simultaneous-player limit.
- Everyone will use the same edition.
- The owner wants the world online while away and does not want to manage a server.
- Automatic backups and a simple restore path matter more than deep configuration.
- You want friends to join without asking them to install a server client, configure a firewall or learn an address and port.
For this profile, the subscription fee buys time and reliability rather than raw hardware. The main trade-off is that you accept Mojang’s player cap, platform separation and customization boundaries.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen dedicated hosting is worth the extra work
- The community regularly exceeds 11 simultaneous players or needs a capacity policy beyond Realms’ fixed plans.
- You need server-side mods, plugins, add-ons, custom permissions, scheduled jobs or settings unavailable in Realms.
- You want a long-running community server with multiple administrators, a predictable location and migration control.
- You need to select a specific server version or software stack.
- You can assign someone to handle updates, security, backups and incident recovery—or pay a managed host to handle the infrastructure.
Choose managed hosting when you want control without operating a home server. Choose self-hosting only when the operator is comfortable with Java or BDS, operating-system maintenance, firewall and port configuration, monitoring and tested backups.
Moving from a small world to a larger server
Start with the edition and world format, not the provider’s brand. A Java Realm and a Java dedicated server use the same broad edition ecosystem, but the transfer process, supported versions and installed content still need checking. Bedrock worlds likewise need a Bedrock-compatible destination. Do not assume that a Java world, Bedrock world, modded world and add-on world are interchangeable.
Before changing services, make a dated copy of the world and verify that it opens in a separate test instance. Ask a managed host how worlds can be exported and restored, how long data remains after cancellation, and whether backups are stored away from the live machine. For a self-hosted move, stop the old process before copying files so the source is not changing during the transfer. Keep the original untouched until players have confirmed that inventories, builds and permissions work on the new server.

Common failure points and practical fixes
Players cannot join because editions differ
Confirm the exact edition on every device. A Java account and a Bedrock account do not become compatible merely because both are labeled Minecraft. Move the group to one edition or select a server architecture that explicitly supports the clients you need.
The server works locally but not from the internet
For self-hosting, check the server’s listening address, router port-forward rule, operating-system firewall and whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT. Test from a different network, not only from another device on the same Wi-Fi.
A world becomes unstable after an update or mod change
Stop the server, preserve a copy of the world, verify that the server version and every mod, plugin or add-on are compatible, then change one component at a time. On Realms, use a world slot or backup before making a major change.
Backups exist but cannot restore the needed version
Review retention and restore controls before relying on a service. For self-hosting, keep dated copies outside the live server directory and perform a trial restore to a separate instance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Latency is high for distant players
On a hosted server, select a datacenter near the majority of players. On a home server, upload capacity, routing and distance can be limiting even when download speed looks high; moving the server or using managed hosting may help.
The advertised memory is not the memory the game receives
Ask whether a host’s RAM figure is dedicated to your instance or shared with other services. Include the server software, mods, add-ons, world size and view distance when estimating demand. If the plan has no upgrade path, a growing world may eventually require migration.
Someone assumes a backup is the same as a second world
Realms’ three world slots are saved worlds you can rotate; they do not increase active-player capacity. A host’s backup snapshots are recovery copies, not necessarily separate playable environments. Confirm how each feature is created, retained and restored.

A decision checklist
- List each player’s device and edition.
- Estimate the highest number of simultaneous players, not the total invitation list.
- Decide whether anyone will administer updates, networking, permissions and backups.
- Identify required customization: vanilla settings, Marketplace content, Java plugins/mods or Bedrock add-ons.
- Price the complete option: subscription for Realms; hardware or hosting, storage, backups and administration for a dedicated server.
- Check CPU, RAM, storage, datacenter, player-slot rules, supported software, DDoS protection, support and cancellation terms for any host.
- Test a backup restore and a connection from outside the local network before inviting the whole group.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Minecraft Realms cheaper than dedicated server hosting?
Realms has a predictable US subscription price: $3.99 per month for entry Bedrock and $7.99 per month for Bedrock Plus or Java, as listed October 14, 2026. Dedicated hosting prices vary, and self-hosting adds hardware, power, broadband, storage, backups and administration costs even though Mojang’s server software is free.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How many people can play on a Realm at once?
The owner counts as a player. Entry Bedrock Realms allows the owner plus two players; Bedrock Realms Plus and Java Realms allow the owner plus ten players. The invitation list can be much larger, but invitations do not raise the simultaneous-player limit.
Can Java and Bedrock players share one Realm?
No. Java Realms and Bedrock Realms are separate ecosystems. Your group must use one edition, or choose a server architecture that explicitly supports the client types you need.
Do friends need to pay for Realms?
Invited friends can play without their own Realms subscription. They still need the correct Minecraft edition and a supported device, and the owner’s plan limit still applies.
Is a dedicated Minecraft server free?
The official Java and Bedrock server software is free to download. Running it is not cost-free: you supply a capable machine or pay a host, plus internet service, electricity, storage, backups, security and maintenance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which option is easier for a beginner?
Realms is easier because subscription setup, online availability, invitations and included backups are handled in Minecraft. Self-hosting requires a compatible runtime or operating system, installation, configuration, firewall and possibly port-forwarding changes, updates and tested backups.
Does Realms support mods and plugins?
Realms is limited to its supported feature set and Marketplace content. Dedicated hosting gives broader control over Java plugins and mods or Bedrock add-ons, but you must verify compatibility, supported loaders and version requirements.
What should I check before buying managed hosting?
Compare allocated CPU and RAM, storage type and capacity, datacenter location, player-slot rules, backup frequency and retention, restore controls, mod/plugin/add-on support, network or DDoS protection, support hours, cancellation terms and world-export options.
The Bottom Line
Choose Realms for a small, same-edition group that values instant setup, 24/7 availability and included backups. Choose dedicated hosting when you need more than 11 simultaneous players, deeper software control or migration flexibility, and can budget for administration or a managed provider. Self-host only if you are prepared to operate the machine, network, security and backups.
