How to Get a Free The Forest Server (Self-Hosting Guide)

The free way to run a The Forest server is self-hosting: install the dedicated-server tool, configure a valid Server.cfg, forward ports 8766, 27015, and 27016, create a Steam server token, and maintain the Windows host yourself.

The genuinely free way to run a The Forest server is to self-host the free dedicated-server tool on your own Windows PC. Install The Forest Dedicated Server through Steam’s Library > Tools menu (or with SteamCMD), configure it, and forward the required ports on your router and firewall. You avoid a recurring game-server rental bill, but you still provide the computer, electricity, internet connection, router access, and administration.

What “free” means for a The Forest server

Steam distributes the dedicated-server software at no charge. SteamDB lists the server application (App 556450) as “FreeToDownload: Yes,” with Windows support; its Windows depot is approximately 1.07 GiB to download and 1.58 GiB of installed content (SteamDB, accessed 2026). That is the software cost, not the total cost of operating a server.

Your host machine must remain available whenever friends want to play. You pay for its electricity and broadband, and you need access to the home router and firewall settings. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, blocks inbound connections, or changes your public address frequently, making a public server reachable can be difficult. A rented host shifts those responsibilities to a provider, but it is no longer a zero-rental-cost solution.

What you need before installing

  • A Windows computer that can stay powered on for the sessions you want to host. The documented dedicated-server package is Windows-focused; do not assume official Linux support from this guide.
  • Enough free disk space for roughly 1.07 GiB of download and 1.58 GiB of installed Windows depot content, plus room for saves, logs, and future updates.
  • Permission to install software and create firewall rules on that computer.
  • Administrator access to the home router so you can create port-forwarding rules.
  • A stable internet connection. The host’s upload capacity and latency affect the experience for everyone connected.
  • A plan for saves, updates, and restarts. The owner is responsible for keeping the process running and the files backed up.

You can install from the Steam client, or use SteamCMD if you prefer not to sign in to the full Steam client. SteamCMD still downloads the same dedicated-server software; the distinction is only the installation method.

Install The Forest Dedicated Server

Option 1: Steam Library and Tools

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Use the library’s filter or drop-down to show Tools, not only games.
  3. Find The Forest Dedicated Server and choose Install.
  4. Select an installation directory with the required free space. Avoid a folder that is routinely cleaned by storage-management software.
  5. Wait for Steam to finish downloading and validating the files before attempting to launch the server.

The dedicated-server entry is separate from the game entry. Installing the game alone does not create a dedicated server process.

Option 2: SteamCMD

SteamCMD is useful on a machine where you do not want the graphical Steam client. Install SteamCMD from Valve’s official distribution, then use its login and update commands to download the dedicated-server application. The Forest itself is associated with App ID 242760 in the historical setup tutorial, while SteamDB identifies the dedicated-server application as App 556450. Check the application shown by your SteamCMD output and the installed tool before running an update; do not substitute one ID for the other.

Because command syntax and package behavior can change, treat the installed tool’s current instructions as authoritative. After SteamCMD reports a completed update, locate the dedicated-server executable in the installation directory and continue with configuration below.

Launch the server process

The setup guide documents launching the server executable directly or from a desktop shortcut. For a background process, append the -batchmode launch parameter. Batch mode prevents the server from depending on an interactive graphical window, which is useful when the host is operated remotely or left running without a monitor.

Create a shortcut or startup script only after you have a known-good configuration. Keep the working directory pointed at the server installation so that configuration, logs, and saves are written where the tool expects them. Record the exact launch parameters in a text file; this makes future updates and troubleshooting reproducible.

Create a valid configuration before first start

Endnight’s April 18, 2017 notes state: “For your launched dedicated server to work, a valid configuration is mandatory, default setup will not work.” Do not assume that starting the executable with untouched defaults is sufficient. Use the generated Server.cfg where available, or pass the equivalent command-line parameters documented for your installed build.

The historical guide describes the following controls. Names and accepted values can vary between builds, so verify them against the configuration file generated by your installation.

Control What to decide Documented detail
Server name The name friends will see in the dedicated-server browser. Set a distinctive name so players can identify the correct listing.
Maximum players How many simultaneous players the configuration allows. The guide’s example uses a maximum of eight. That is an example value, not a guarantee that every build, computer, or connection supports eight players.
Password Whether access is limited to people who know a private password. Use a password for a private group and distribute it through a trusted channel.
Difficulty The gameplay difficulty selected for the server. Choose the value supported by your installed build and confirm it is reflected in the generated configuration.
initType Whether the server starts a new world or resumes an existing one. The documented values are New and Continue.
Save slot Which existing world the server should load. Match the slot to the save you intend to continue; an incorrect slot can make a working server appear to have lost progress.
Autosave interval How often the server writes automatic saves. Select an interval appropriate for your group, then allow the process time to complete its save before shutting down.
Logging How much diagnostic information the process records. Enable useful logging while testing so connection and startup errors leave a record.

Start with a simple private configuration: a recognizable name, a password, the desired difficulty, initType=New for a new world or Continue for an existing one, the intended save slot, and a conservative autosave interval. Stop the process cleanly after testing so the save is not interrupted.

Forward the required network ports

The Steam Community dedicated-server tutorial identifies three ports: 8766, 27015, and 27016. Forward and allow them for both TCP and UDP as specified by that tutorial, using the host computer’s local network address. You must create the matching rules in two places: the router’s port-forwarding section and the Windows firewall.

Port Role identified by the tutorial Where to allow it
8766 Steam Router forwarding and Windows firewall, TCP and UDP.
27015 Game Router forwarding and Windows firewall, TCP and UDP.
27016 Query Router forwarding and Windows firewall, TCP and UDP.

Router procedure

  1. Give the host PC a stable local address, either with a static address configured on the computer or a DHCP reservation in the router.
  2. Open the router’s administration page and locate Port Forwarding, NAT, or a similarly named section.
  3. Create entries for ports 8766, 27015, and 27016, pointing each entry to the host PC’s local address.
  4. Set the protocol to TCP and UDP, or create separate TCP and UDP rules when the router does not offer a combined option.
  5. Save or apply the rules, then restart the router only if its interface requires that step.

Windows firewall procedure

  1. Open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security.
  2. Create inbound rules for the server executable, or create port rules covering 8766, 27015, and 27016 on TCP and UDP.
  3. Allow the rules on the network profile the host actually uses.
  4. Start the server and check the firewall’s blocked-connection logs if friends cannot see or join it.

Port forwarding exposes a service from your home network. Keep the operating system and server files updated, use a strong server password, and do not open additional ports “just in case.”

Make the server appear in the dedicated-server browser

A reachable process is not necessarily a discoverable listing. The guide instructs owners to create a server ID through Steam Game Server Account Management and place the resulting login token in serverSteamAccount or the corresponding launch parameter. Follow the account-management page’s current instructions when creating the ID.

  1. Create the server account and copy the login token exactly.
  2. Put the token in the serverSteamAccount configuration field or its launch-parameter equivalent.
  3. Save the configuration and restart the dedicated-server process.
  4. Search for the configured server name in the in-game dedicated-server browser.

Treat the token like a password. Do not post it in screenshots, public chat, configuration snippets, or support requests. If it is exposed, replace or regenerate it through Steam Game Server Account Management.

Test a connection before inviting everyone

  1. Start the server with the validated configuration and watch the log for startup errors.
  2. From another computer or a friend’s connection, open The Forest and use the dedicated-server browser.
  3. Search for the exact server name, then enter the password if one is configured.
  4. Join with one test player first. Check that the world loads, the chosen difficulty is active, and the expected save slot appears.
  5. Only after that test succeeds should you distribute the name and password to the rest of the group.

If the listing does not appear, first confirm that the process is still running, the configuration is valid, the token is present, and all three ports are forwarded to the correct local address. A successful local launch does not prove that an outside connection can reach the host.

Keep the game and server versions aligned

Endnight’s release notes warn that game updates can require an update and restart of the dedicated-server tool. A version check can reject a server whose build does not match the game clients. Before a planned play session:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the server cleanly and let Steam or SteamCMD update the dedicated-server files.
  2. Update the game clients used by your friends.
  3. Review the configuration after the update; preserve your server name, save choice, password, and token.
  4. Restart the server and perform a short connection test.

Do not assume that a configuration file from the historical tutorial will work unchanged forever. The tutorial was published in 2017, and parameter names or behavior can change in later builds. If a parameter is rejected, compare it with the configuration generated by the installed version instead of blindly copying an old command line.

Maintenance for a self-hosted server

Saves and backups

Autosave protects against ordinary progress loss, but it is not a substitute for a separate backup. Periodically stop the server cleanly and copy the relevant save data to another disk or a protected location. Keep at least one backup from before a major update so you have a recovery point if a build or configuration change causes trouble.

Availability

A self-hosted server is available only while the host computer is powered on, connected to the internet, and running the process. Sleep settings, Windows restarts, router outages, and broadband interruptions can all make the listing disappear. Configure the host’s power settings deliberately and schedule restarts at times that do not interrupt your group.

Logs and troubleshooting records

Keep logging enabled while diagnosing problems. Note the date, game version, server-tool version, configuration changes, and the exact error text. Reverting one change at a time is faster than replacing the entire configuration and losing track of what fixed the issue.

Common problems and fixes

The server starts, but friends cannot see it

  • Confirm that a valid configuration is loaded; Endnight explicitly states that default setup will not work.
  • Check that the server process is still running and that the configured name is spelled correctly.
  • Verify forwarding and firewall rules for 8766, 27015, and 27016 on both TCP and UDP.
  • Confirm that the router forwards to the host’s current local address, not an old DHCP address.
  • Check that the Steam server-account token is present and has not been shared or corrupted.

The browser lists the server, but joining fails

  • Check that the client and dedicated-server builds match after any update.
  • Confirm the password and save configuration.
  • Review the server log for a rejected connection or startup error.
  • Have one player retry after a clean server restart; this distinguishes a transient process issue from a persistent network or version mismatch.

An update causes a version rejection

Stop the server, update the dedicated-server tool, update the game clients, and restart. Endnight’s notes specifically warn that the tool may need updating alongside game patches. Do not mix an old executable with a newly updated game and expect the version check to accept it.

The world appears to have reset

Stop the server and inspect initType and the save-slot selection. New starts a new world; Continue is the documented value for resuming an existing one. If the intended save is still unavailable, restore the last known-good backup rather than repeatedly launching with an uncertain configuration.

Self-hosting versus renting a server

Self-hosting is the only route established here that removes the recurring rental fee. Renting can be simpler for groups without an always-on Windows computer, but provider pricing, free tiers, uptime, and current compatibility vary and are not established by the available evidence. Use these decision points rather than assuming that any advertised “free” plan is suitable.

Decision point Self-hosted server Rented game server
Upfront and monthly cost No dedicated-server software fee; you supply hardware, electricity, broadband, and router access. Normally involves a provider charge; current prices and free tiers are not stated here.
Control Direct control over saves, configuration files, launch parameters, and updates. Control depends on the provider’s panel, file access, and supported settings.
Setup effort Install, configure, forward ports, create a server ID, and maintain the process. The provider usually handles network exposure, while you learn its panel and policies.
Always-on hardware Required whenever friends need access. The provider supplies the continuously running machine.
Home-network exposure Requires inbound router and firewall rules. Your home router generally does not need game-server forwarding.
Updates and backups You must update the tool with the game and protect saves yourself. Some maintenance may be automated, but backup and rollback options depend on the provider.
Availability Ends when your computer, router, or home connection is offline. Depends on the provider’s infrastructure and service status.

Choose self-hosting when you already have a suitable Windows machine, can change router and firewall settings, and want complete control. Consider a rental when avoiding home-network configuration and keeping the world online without your own PC matters more than eliminating the monthly charge.

Is a free The Forest server worth it?

For a small group with a spare Windows computer, self-hosting can be the practical zero-rental-cost option: Steam supplies the dedicated-server download, and the documented setup provides configuration, port, and discovery steps. The trade-off is ownership of every operational task. You are the person who must keep the computer awake, protect the token, forward ports, update after patches, and recover saves.

Endnight introduced dedicated-server support in the V0.59 notes with the warning that “As this is a first pass, it should be considered highly experimental,” and recommended peer-to-peer play for most players while issues were being fixed. That historical warning is a reason to keep backups and a fallback plan, not a statement that every current build behaves identically. If a dedicated server is unstable for your group, peer-to-peer play remains the simpler alternative while you investigate the specific configuration or version problem.
