Shipwrecks are ruined Overworld boats that can hold up to three chests: a supply chest, a treasure chest and a map chest. The map chest has a guaranteed buried-treasure-map roll in both Java and Bedrock, making it the fastest route from a wreck to a heart of the sea and other valuables.

Find the wreck along an ocean or coast, secure the map before your air runs out, follow its red X to a nearby shore, then dig methodically. The safest approach differs slightly between editions, especially when you use chunk coordinates to pinpoint the buried chest.

Shipwrecks generate as ruined vessels in Overworld ocean and coastal environments. A wreck may be completely underwater, partly beached, or rotated so that its hull is difficult to recognize. Look for exposed planks, a broken hull, masts or other wooden sections rising from the water. The structure can also provide a useful supply of wood after you have checked its chests.
Depending on how much of the boat generated, a shipwreck can contain up to three chests. The three chest roles are distinct:

| Chest | Primary purpose | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Map chest | Locates buried treasure | A guaranteed buried-treasure-map roll in Java and Bedrock, plus additional randomized rolls |
| Supply chest | Early-survival provisions | Food, paper, potatoes, carrots, moss blocks, poisonous potatoes, nuggets, lapis lazuli and occasional higher-value items such as diamonds or bottles o’ enchanting |
| Treasure chest | Material valuables | Randomized pools centered on iron, gold, emeralds, lapis lazuli and related materials |
Not every wreck has every chest. Missing sections of the generated boat can mean that only one or two chests are present, and awkward terrain can hide a chest inside the hull or beneath the seabed. Loot pools also depend on the edition and game version, so treat an item list as a set of possibilities rather than a guarantee.
Prepare before you dive
A shipwreck is often an easy early-game target, but water, drowned and a poor exit route can turn a short dive into a death. Take enough equipment to make the first visit a controlled search rather than an improvised underwater fight.
- Food: Carry enough to restore health after taking damage and to refill hunger while swimming or digging.
- A boat: Use it to search coastlines and open ocean quickly, and to leave the site once the map is secured.
- Marking blocks: Place a distinctive column, platform or other marker at the wreck so you can return after following the map.
- Breathing help: Doors can create a temporary air pocket in applicable versions and locations; a Respiration helmet or a Water Breathing potion gives you more time when available.
- A return plan: Identify the surface directly above the wreck and keep an unobstructed route back up. Do not begin stripping the entire boat if your oxygen bar is already low.
Drowned may occupy or patrol a shallow wreck. Enter, locate the map chest and leave if your air is running short. You can return for the supply and treasure chests after the treasure route is known.
How to find a shipwreck
Search the right terrain
Travel by boat along ocean edges, beaches and coastal shallows. Scan both the waterline and the seabed: a wreck may be partly beached with its wood obvious from land, or fully submerged with only a mast or a few planks visible. A rotated hull can look like scattered debris until you see several wooden sections together.
Mark the site immediately
Before opening the first chest, place a marker where it can be seen from the water. A wreck is easy to lose when the shoreline curves or the ocean floor is uneven. The marker also lets you return for the other chests after you have collected the map.
Enter in short, deliberate passes
- Swim or descend to the hull while watching for drowned.
- Identify the stern and lower sections of the boat; the map chest is generally found in the lower stern area.
- Open the map chest first. Take the marked treasure map and leave any ordinary paper or other secondary items until you have confirmed your air supply.
- Surface, recover health and oxygen, then decide whether to clear the remaining chests immediately or return later.
Which chest should you open first?
The map chest is the priority because it turns a random ocean find into a directed treasure hunt. The Minecraft Wiki conduit tutorial advises taking the marked map and postponing a complete wreck search when air is limited. A short dive that obtains the map has achieved the most important objective even if you leave the other loot behind.

Map chest contents
In the documented Java and Bedrock loot tables, the map chest includes a guaranteed buried-treasure-map roll. Microsoft’s Bedrock definition labels the destination of that exploration map as buriedtreasure. The table then makes three further rolls from entries that include a compass, map, clock, paper, feather and book.
That means the chest can contain more than one map-like item. Select the map with a marked destination and red X; an empty map, ordinary map item or paper is not the buried-treasure map you need. Java’s secondary map entry is called an empty map, while the corresponding Bedrock entry is called map.
Supply chest contents
Supply chests are useful for a new world because their pools mix food and basic materials. Documented possibilities include paper, potatoes, carrots, moss blocks, poisonous potatoes, nuggets and lapis lazuli. Rare or higher-value rolls can include diamonds and bottles o’ enchanting. The exact combination is random, and the active edition and release determine the final pool.
Treasure chest contents
The separate treasure chest focuses on valuable materials. Its pools include iron, gold, emeralds, lapis lazuli and related items. Do not assume that a wreck’s treasure chest will contain every listed material; each chest is generated from randomized pools.

How to read and follow the treasure map
1. Choose the marked map
Open the map chest and place the map with the red X in your hotbar. Hold it so the player marker and destination are visible. Keep the other maps and paper separate until you have identified the correct one.
2. Use the map’s orientation
On a Minecraft treasure map, the top edge is north and the right edge is east. Your white player marker shows your position relative to the mapped area. Travel in the direction that moves the marker toward the red X rather than relying on the direction your character model is facing.

3. Slow down as the marker grows
At a distance, the marker may sit near an edge of the map or outside the detailed area. As you approach the destination, it enlarges and the map begins filling in more terrain. Switch from fast boat travel to careful movement when the marker is close to the X; overshooting the target makes the final search harder.
4. Identify the associated shore
The red X normally marks buried treasure on a beach, snowy beach or stony shore. The target can be just inland, at the waterline or under shallow water where the coastline meets the ocean. Do not assume the X points to the exact center of a visible sand patch; use the marker’s position and nearby terrain together.

5. Dig a small search area
Start with a compact 2×2 or 2×3 area around the X. Remove sand, gravel and shallow covering blocks one layer at a time. The achievement guidance for buried treasure says the chest is never deeper than a few blocks in the normal case, so widen the search methodically instead of excavating an entire beach.
If the X lies underwater or a wave of gravel keeps falling into the hole, place temporary blocks to control the excavation. Doors or a Water Breathing option can provide additional time while you clear the target. Keep a visible route back to the surface.
Pinpointing the chest with chunk coordinates
Treasure maps get you to the correct area; chunk coordinates can refine the final search. The buried chest is placed at a consistent horizontal location within its generated chunk, but Java and Bedrock use different local coordinates. The vertical coordinate is variable, so the useful target is the chunk’s X and Z position rather than a fixed Y value.
| Edition | Most-precise chunk-center target | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | x=9, z=9 within the chunk | After reaching the X, align your position to local chunk coordinates 9 and 9, then dig through the nearby covering blocks. |
| Bedrock Edition | x=8, z=8 within the chunk | After reaching the X, align your position to local chunk coordinates 8 and 8, then search vertically and slightly around that point. |
These coordinates are a targeting aid, not a substitute for the map. A map can be difficult to read at the exact shoreline, and terrain or water may obscure the chest. If the coordinate point is empty, check the neighboring blocks and confirm that you are using the coordinate convention for your edition.

What is inside buried treasure?
Every buried-treasure chest contains exactly one heart of the sea. That item is the fixed reward and is also the key ingredient for a conduit when combined with eight nautilus shells.
The remaining contents are randomized. Depending on the active version’s loot table, possible rewards include iron and gold ingots, diamonds, emeralds, prismarine-related items, food, potions and TNT. The chest may contain only some of these categories; no single buried chest promises the complete list.
Java and Bedrock differences that matter
The overall route is the same in both editions: locate a wreck, take its guaranteed map, follow the red X and dig. The differences become important when you inspect secondary loot or try to stand on the most precise block above the chest.
| Feature | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Map-chest guaranteed map | Present in the documented map-chest loot table | Present in the documented map-chest loot table |
| Secondary map-item label | Empty map in the table’s secondary entries | Map in the table’s secondary entries |
| Buried-chest chunk-local target | x=9, z=9 | x=8, z=8 |
| Loot-pool interpretation | Use the Java table for the specific release | Use the Bedrock table for the specific release |
Loot tables and structure behavior can change with game releases. When documenting exact item pools or probabilities for a particular world, record the edition and version instead of treating one table as universal.

When the wreck is shallow
Shallow water can look harmless but gives drowned easy access to the same confined space you are entering. Approach with food ready, open the map chest first and retreat to land if hostile mobs block the hull. Return with stronger equipment rather than trading health for a low-value supply roll.
When the wreck is deep
Do not swim down without knowing how you will return. Use a breathing aid when available, keep the surface route clear and watch the oxygen bar rather than waiting for the final bubbles. If the bar becomes critical, abandon the chest-clearing process and surface; the wreck remains available after you recover.

When the map target is underwater
Treasure can generate at a shoreline that has shifted or is covered by shallow water. Build a small working platform, use temporary blocks to hold back water and dig a narrow shaft. A 2×2 or 2×3 opening is easier to breathe around and repair than a broad excavation. Widen the hole only after the first few layers fail to reveal the chest.
Common problems and fixes
The chest is not where the X appears
Check that you selected the map with the red X, not a blank map or paper. Move until the player marker is centered over the X, then search a small area rather than one block. Use the correct Java or Bedrock chunk-local coordinate and inspect adjacent blocks if the exact point is obstructed.
The map marker barely moves
You may be traveling sideways relative to the destination or still be outside the map’s detailed region. Remember that map up is north and map right is east. Turn toward the direction that moves the marker toward the X, and slow down once it begins enlarging.
The wreck has no map chest
Shipwrecks can generate with missing sections, and not every wreck contains all three chest types. Search the lower stern and remaining interior carefully. If the map chest truly did not generate, continue exploring other shipwrecks rather than expecting a supply or treasure chest to produce the guaranteed map roll.
You run out of air while looting
Leave immediately, recover at the surface and mark the wreck if you have not already done so. On the next attempt, take the map first, then use doors, Respiration or Water Breathing if available. Clearing every room in one dive is unnecessary.
A complete shipwreck-to-treasure checklist
- Bring food, a boat, marking blocks and an underwater-breathing option when available.
- Search ocean and coastal water for a hull, mast or exposed ship wood.
- Mark the wreck before swimming into it.
- Enter carefully and locate the lower stern area.
- Open the map chest first and take the map with the red X.
- Surface if your oxygen is low; return later for supply and treasure chests.
- Travel so the white marker moves toward the X, using north-at-top and east-at-right map orientation.
- Slow down when the marker enlarges and the terrain detail fills in.
- Search the associated beach, snowy beach or stony shore.
- Dig a compact 2×2 or 2×3 area through sand, gravel and shallow cover.
- Use Java local coordinates 9,9 or Bedrock local coordinates 8,8 as a final targeting aid.
- Collect the guaranteed heart of the sea and randomized additional rewards.
Why the map chest is the best first objective
A shipwreck is valuable even when its supply and treasure pools are modest, but the map chest provides a reliable progression path. The guaranteed map leads to a buried chest whose fixed heart of the sea can support a conduit, while the wreck itself supplies food, materials and a safe return landmark. Prioritizing that map, managing oxygen and digging a narrow search pattern turns an awkward underwater structure into a repeatable treasure run.
