It preserves the reveals that shaped the saga and is the simplest way to avoid turning a large franchise into homework. Choose chronological order only if you specifically want the in-universe timeline. If you want the shortest complete story, watch the nine episodic Skywalker Saga films by themselves.
Which Star Wars viewing order is best?
Lucasfilm does not make one order mandatory. StarWars.com presents both release order and chronological order, and its May 1, 2025 viewing guide says, “Whichever order you choose…is the right one!” The useful choice depends on what you want the first viewing to feel like.

| Approach | Best for | What it preserves | Main complication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | Newcomers and viewers who want the original experience | The sequence in which major characters, ideas and twists were revealed | Stories jump backward and forward in the timeline |
| Chronological order | Returning fans and viewers who want the in-universe history | The Republic-to-Empire, Rebellion and later-era progression | Anthologies and overlapping series do not fit one perfectly linear line |
| Skywalker Saga only | Anyone who wants the numbered-film narrative without television | A complete nine-film arc | It leaves out context and side stories |
There is also a practical difference in scope. A film-only marathon is easy to schedule. An all-title marathon includes animated and live-action series, anthology episodes and stories that overlap. Decide whether you want the nine-film spine or the wider slate before you start.
Release order: the recommended first watch
Release order lets the franchise explain itself as audiences first encountered it. Early films establish the central conflict before later entries revisit its origins. That rhythm is especially valuable if you know little about the story and want major revelations to arrive without advance context.

The film spine in release order
- Star Wars: A New Hope
- The Empire Strikes Back
- Return of the Jedi
- The Phantom Menace
- Attack of the Clones
- Revenge of the Sith
- The Force Awakens
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
- The Last Jedi
- Solo: A Star Wars Story
- The Rise of Skywalker
This list is the film-only release sequence, including the two standalone films. The official StarWars.com guide also provides a combined release list for films and series. Use that guide when you want every television season included in publication order rather than trying to guess where a series belongs from its setting alone.
How to add series without breaking release order
Series are optional expansions, not prerequisites for understanding the nine episodic films. A sensible first watch is to complete the film spine, then add the shows that interest you. If you prefer a complete release-order marathon, follow the combined official list one entry at a time and keep the list’s sequence intact.
- The Clone Wars is both a theatrical film and an animated series. Treat the film as part of that story, not as a replacement for the series.
- Star Wars Rebels and Andor explore the period leading toward Rogue One, but they were released as separate productions.
- Obi-Wan Kenobi, Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire, Tales of the Underworld and Star Wars Resistance can be added when you want more character or era context.
Do not assume that every series is essential viewing for the films. The release guide is a completeness tool; your personal marathon can remain selective.
Chronological order: the in-universe timeline
The official chronological guide begins with The Acolyte and then moves through the prequel-era stories, the Clone Wars, the fall of the Republic, the Imperial period, the Rebellion and the New Republic/First Order era. This order is useful when your priority is historical progression rather than the order in which the audience learned information.

A practical chronological route
- The Acolyte.
- The prequel-era material, including The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.
- The Clone Wars, using Lucasfilm’s dedicated sequential episode order rather than the original broadcast order.
- Revenge of the Sith, which follows the Clone Wars period and depicts the Republic’s fall.
- Solo: A Star Wars Story.
- Obi-Wan Kenobi.
- Andor and Star Wars Rebels, which take place concurrently and both lead toward Rogue One.
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
- A New Hope, followed by The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
- Star Wars Resistance, which begins before The Force Awakens and continues beyond it.
- The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
This is a guide to story placement, not a claim that every episode can be assigned to one exact date. The official all-title list is the right checklist for a full chronological marathon, especially as new titles are added or their availability changes.
Why some chronological entries need flexibility
Andor and Star Wars Rebels overlap in time. Neither completely precedes the other, so watching one entire series before starting the other is a convenient choice, not a precise timeline requirement.
The Tales anthology shows span wide stretches of history. Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire and Tales of the Underworld should be treated as collections of stories from different points in the timeline, not as single blocks that belong between two films.

Splitting it around the film is more chronologically exact, while watching it as a series is easier for most viewers.

The nine-film Skywalker Saga order
If you want the main numbered-film narrative and nothing else, use this chronological sequence:
- Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
- Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
- Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
- Star Wars: A New Hope
- The Empire Strikes Back
- Return of the Jedi
- The Force Awakens
- The Last Jedi
- The Rise of Skywalker
Lucasfilm used this order for its 2024 Skywalker Saga marathon announcement. It is the cleanest route for a viewer who wants one continuous family saga, and it does not require Rogue One, Solo or any series to make sense.
Where the standalone stories fit
Rogue One
The official guide places Rogue One immediately before A New Hope. Its story follows a mission to steal the Death Star plans, so the transition into the opening of A New Hope is unusually direct. In release order, watch it after The Force Awakens; in chronological order, place it immediately before A New Hope.
Solo
The guide places Solo before Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor. It is a self-contained origin story rather than a required bridge between numbered episodes. Add it when you want more background on its central characters, or omit it from a Skywalker-only marathon.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Standalone films enrich the wider setting, but they are not prerequisites for following the nine episodic films. Their optional status is one reason release order and chronological order can both work without requiring every title.
How to watch The Clone Wars correctly
The Clone Wars is the main exception to a simple film-and-series checklist. The series is set between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, but Lucasfilm’s official sequential episode order rearranges episodes from their original broadcast sequence and includes the theatrical movie.
- Place the Clone Wars story between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.
- Use Lucasfilm’s dedicated sequential episode list, dated March 17, 2014.
- Follow that list episode by episode rather than inserting episodes according to air date or an abbreviated fan-made order.
- When finished, continue to Revenge of the Sith in the chronological route.
This matters because a broadcast-order binge can move characters and events out of their intended internal sequence. The official list is the reliable reference when you want episode-level chronology.

First-time viewer
Choose release order. Start with the film spine, then add series only if you want a longer marathon. This keeps the original reveal structure and prevents a prequel-era story from explaining information before the original films introduce it.

Returning fan
Choose chronological order when you want to trace the history from The Acolyte through the Republic, Empire, Rebellion and later eras. Keep the overlap warnings in mind, and use the official episode list for The Clone Wars.
Short weekend or family marathon
Choose the nine Skywalker Saga films. Chronological order is easier to follow for a single uninterrupted family story, while release order preserves the original reveal pattern. Either is complete at the level of the numbered films.
Completionist
Use StarWars.com’s current combined guide and mark each film and series as you go. Expect the list to include titles displayed for 2026; confirm that a title has actually been released before adding it to a watch schedule.

Streaming, availability and planning notes
The official viewing guide directs viewers to Disney+, but catalogues vary by region and change over time. Check your territory before planning a marathon, and verify whether a listed 2026 title is available rather than assuming that its appearance on a guide means it has already been released.
For a physical reference, Lucasfilm announced Star Wars: Timelines as a visual chronology covering films, live-action series, animation, books, comics and games. It is optional background reading; you do not need it to choose a viewing order.
Common watch-order mistakes
- Mixing reveal order and timeline order without a plan: Decide which experience you want before starting.
- Treating every show as required: The nine films remain a complete shorter route.
- Forcing anthology series into one date: The Tales shows span different periods.
- Putting Andor entirely before Rebels: The two stories are concurrent.
- Using broadcast order for The Clone Wars: Follow Lucasfilm’s sequential episode order instead.
- Assuming chronological means perfectly linear: Resistance crosses the beginning of the sequel trilogy, and some series overlap.
- Planning around an unverified future listing: Check release status and regional availability on the day you schedule the watch.
Bottom line
Start with release order unless you have a specific reason not to. Use chronological order for an in-universe history lesson, and use the nine-film Skywalker Saga sequence for the most compact complete narrative. Add Rogue One, Solo and the series as optional expansions, using the official guide’s placement notes whenever stories overlap or span multiple eras.
