Minecraft Java Snapshot 24w10a, released March 6, 2024, introduced eight wolf variants whose appearance depends on the biome where a wolf spawns. The notes name nine wolves in total because they also include the familiar Pale Wolf; it was not a new addition.
Which wolf variants did Snapshot 24w10a add?
The eight additions were Woods, Ashen, Black, Chestnut, Rusty, Spotted, Striped, and Snowy. Pale is the existing variant listed alongside them in the snapshot notes.
Where each wolf spawns determines its variant. The following biome and pack details come from the 24w10a release notes.
| Variant | Spawn biome | Pack details in the notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pale | Taiga | Default pack size is four |
| Woods | Forest | Not stated |
| Ashen | Snowy Taiga | Not stated |
| Black | Old Growth Pine Taiga | Packs of two to four |
| Chestnut | Old Growth Spruce Taiga | Packs of two to four |
| Rusty | Sparse Jungle | Packs of two to four |
| Spotted | Savanna Plateau | Packs of four to eight |
| Striped | Wooded Badlands | Packs of four to eight |
| Snowy | Grove | Rare; always walks alone |
Forest is the place to look for Woods Wolves
The snapshot describes Woods as the dominant Overworld variant because Forest is common. The notes do not give pack-size rules for every variant, so the table leaves those entries unstated rather than inferring them.

Minecraft announced the eight new variations as entering testing in Java Edition snapshots and Bedrock Edition beta/preview on March 6, 2024. The official New Minecraft Wolves article said Java snapshot installation starts in the Launcher’s Installations tab and cautioned that testing versions can corrupt worlds: “Important note: testing versions can corrupt your world, so please backup and/or run them in a different save folder from your main worlds.” Back up your world or use a separate save folder before trying a testing version.
