| Collect ancient plants | Give Sniffers suitable grass- and dirt-like ground to search. | Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pods. |
The core mechanics in this guide are documented for Java Edition 1.20 and for Bedrock Edition’s Trails & Tales release.
Why the Sniffer matters
Sniffers provide a renewable route to two ancient plant lines that are not obtained through ordinary seed farming. They periodically push their noses into suitable ground and can uncover Torchflower Seeds or Pitcher Pods. Those drops let you establish crops, decorate a base with unusual plants and maintain a breeding cycle without returning to ocean ruins for every new egg.

The mob was selected by the Minecraft Live 2022 vote with 55% of the vote, according to Minecraft’s feature coverage. Its defining role is therefore archaeological and botanical: the initial egg is an exploration reward, while the long-term value comes from breeding and digging.
How to find a Sniffer Egg
Prepare for the archaeology trip
Take a Brush before searching. The Brush is the required archaeology tool for suspicious blocks, so ordinary mining will not produce the same result. Carry enough inventory space for archaeological finds and a safe way to return from an underwater site. The key target is Suspicious Sand inside Warm Ocean Ruins.
Locate Warm Ocean Ruins
Search Warm Ocean Ruins for the suspicious sand identified by the official Sniffer documentation. Ruins contain ordinary sand as well, so do not treat every sand block as an egg source. Your objective is specifically the suspicious variant that can be brushed for archaeology loot.
Brush Suspicious Sand
- Equip the Brush.
- Position yourself at a Suspicious Sand block in the Warm Ocean Ruins.
- Brush the block carefully until its archaeological item is revealed.
- Collect the result and check whether it is a Sniffer Egg.
A Sniffer Egg is a possible find, not a guaranteed result from every suspicious block. If one block yields something else, continue examining the ruin’s other Suspicious Sand rather than assuming the site has no egg.

Protect the first egg
Once you obtain an egg, move it to a controlled area before starting the hatch. A simple pen near your base makes the next steps easier: you can place the egg on Moss for the shorter incubation, keep the resulting Sniffer where you can observe it and reserve nearby ground for later seed searches.
How long a Sniffer Egg takes to hatch
The documented time depends on the block directly beneath the egg. The times are approximate, so treat them as expected durations rather than a stopwatch guarantee.

| Hatch surface | Approximate time | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Moss | About 10 minutes | Use this when you want the shortest documented hatch time. |
| Any other block | About 20 minutes | Use this when Moss is unavailable or when the egg is already placed elsewhere. |
Hatch procedure
- Choose the location where the young Sniffer will be managed.
- Place Moss beneath the egg if the ten-minute option is important; otherwise, place the egg on the available block.
- Leave the egg in position for the appropriate approximate duration.
- After hatching, keep the young Sniffer in the prepared area while you work toward a second adult.
Changing the block beneath an egg changes which documented timing applies. Moss is the deliberate choice for speed; other blocks are not defective, they simply use the longer approximate interval.
How to breed Sniffers
What breeding requires
Breeding needs two adult Sniffers and Torchflower Seeds. The seeds are both a breeding item and one of the ancient resources that Sniffers can uncover, so the first successful dig can start a self-sustaining population.

Feed both adults
- Bring two adult Sniffers into the same safe area.
- Hold Torchflower Seeds.
- Feed the seeds to the first adult.
- Feed the seeds to the second adult.
- Watch the pair for the breeding result and collect the dropped Sniffer Egg.
The result is important: two Sniffers do not immediately spawn a Snifflet. Breeding drops a Sniffer Egg, which must be hatched using the same Moss-versus-other-block process as an archaeological egg.
Plan the second generation
Keep at least one hatch surface ready before feeding the adults. If the adults are in a crowded pen, move the new egg to a separate hatch area so you can track which generation is growing. Once the new Sniffer matures, it can join another breeding cycle, allowing population growth from the original archaeological find.

Because Torchflower Seeds are needed for breeding, do not plant or spend your entire first supply before you have secured enough for the next pair. Letting one or more Sniffers search for additional seeds gives you a buffer for future breeding attempts.
What ancient seeds Sniffers dig up
Sniffers can occasionally sniff up two documented ancient drops. Their outputs are distinct, so the item you receive determines which crop line you can start.

| Sniffer drop | Planting result | Use |

| Torchflower Seeds | Plant on Farmland to grow Torchflowers. | Grows the Torchflower line and supplies the seeds used to breed adult Sniffers. |

Encourage digging
Let Sniffers search suitable grass- and dirt-like ground rather than restricting them to a fully paved enclosure. Their defining behavior is pushing their noses into the ground until they uncover an ancient seed. The drops are occasional, so a quiet interval does not necessarily mean the mob is broken; give it accessible search ground and time.

- Collect Torchflower Seeds from a Sniffer or from an existing crop.
- Prepare Farmland.
- Plant the Torchflower Seeds on the Farmland.
- Allow the crop to grow, then harvest the resulting Torchflowers and retain seeds for breeding.
Torchflowers are therefore both an output and a management resource. Reserve some seeds for the next breeding pair before using the remainder for decoration or other plans.
Grow Pitcher Plants
- Collect a Pitcher Pod from a Sniffer’s digging.
- Plant the Pitcher Pod on Farmland.
- Wait for the Pitcher Crop to mature.
- Harvest the mature crop to obtain Pitcher Plants.
The Pod is the planting item; the mature Pitcher Crop is the stage that produces the Pitcher Plant. Keeping those names separate prevents a common mistake in which a player looks for a Pitcher Plant item to plant instead of using the Pod.

Separate the three jobs
A useful setup has distinct spaces for hatching, breeding and digging. Put the egg hatch area on Moss, keep adult Sniffers together where feeding is easy and leave a section of suitable ground open for searching. This layout prevents a newly dropped egg from being lost among adults and makes it obvious which surface is providing the shorter hatch time.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Keep a seed reserve
Store Torchflower Seeds before each breeding attempt. One portion is for feeding the two adults; another portion can be planted on Farmland; a reserve protects the cycle if your next Sniffer search takes time. Pitcher Pods can be planted separately so they do not get confused with the breeding crop.
Use labels and collection points
Simple signs or chests marked “eggs,” “Torchflower Seeds” and “Pitcher Pods” help distinguish archaeological loot, breeding output and plant drops. This is especially useful when several adults are digging and multiple item types appear in the same area.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting Sniffer problems
No egg after searching ruins
- Confirm that you are in Warm Ocean Ruins, not an unrelated ocean structure.
- Look specifically for Suspicious Sand.
- Use a Brush; ordinary breaking does not perform the archaeology action.
- Brush additional suspicious blocks because an egg is a possible find, not a guaranteed result from each block.
The egg seems to be taking too long
- Check the block beneath it. Moss uses the approximately ten-minute timing; any other block uses approximately twenty minutes.
- Use the Moss option when you need the shorter documented incubation.
- Do not treat the approximate figures as exact second-by-second timers.
Breeding produced no Snifflet
- Verify that both animals are adults.
- Feed Torchflower Seeds to each adult, not a different flower or crop item.
- Look for the dropped Sniffer Egg. The breeding result is an egg, so the next Sniffer appears only after that egg hatches.
Sniffers are not giving seeds
- Provide accessible grass- and dirt-like ground for searching.
- Allow time for their occasional digging behavior.
- Check the ground and nearby collection area for either Torchflower Seeds or Pitcher Pods.
- Remember that only those two documented ancient drops are expected from this process.
A crop will not grow
- Use Farmland for both Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pods.
- Plant the correct item: Seeds create Torchflowers, while Pods create Pitcher Crops that later yield Pitcher Plants.
Sniffer progression checklist
- Craft or obtain a Brush before visiting an archaeological site.
- Search Warm Ocean Ruins for Suspicious Sand.
- Brush the suspicious blocks and secure a Sniffer Egg when one appears.
- Prepare Moss if you want the approximately ten-minute hatch option.
- Hatch the egg and raise the resulting Sniffer.
- Obtain a second adult through another egg and hatch it.
- Feed Torchflower Seeds to both adults.
- Collect the dropped Sniffer Egg and hatch it to expand the group.
- Leave suitable ground available so Sniffers can dig.
- Plant Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pods on Farmland, then harvest Torchflowers and mature Pitcher Plants.
