Project Zomboid Local Multiplayer: Split-Screen, Remote Play and Co-op Options

Project Zomboid supports local split-screen and Steam Remote Play Together, while ordinary online co-op and dedicated servers suit separate clients and persistent worlds. Build 42 multiplayer remains experimental, so branch compatibility and save backups matter.

Yes. Project Zomboid supports local split-screen co-op, Steam Remote Play Together and ordinary online multiplayer. Split-screen puts players at one Windows PC, while Remote Play Together streams that same local session to a friend elsewhere. Regular online play uses a server and normally requires every participant to own the game. Build 42 needs extra caution: The Indie Stone’s 2025 announcement describes multiplayer in Unstable 42.13 as work in progress and intended for stress testing, not a finished, trouble-free release.

Which Project Zomboid multiplayer option fits your group?

The right method depends on where players are, whether everyone owns a copy, and whether the world must remain available when the host is offline.

Method Where players are Game ownership Branch considerations Input World persistence and administration
Local split-screen Same room, one Windows PC One installed copy on the host computer Use the branch supported by your current build; unstable branches can change behavior Host controls plus an additional compatible controller are the practical arrangement Temporary local session controlled by the host
Steam Remote Play Together Players in different locations Only the host needs to own and install the game Works by sharing the host’s local session; Build 42 instability still applies if the host uses that branch Remote player’s gamepad input is sent to the host PC Temporary host session; the host remains responsible for the game
Ordinary online co-op Players connect over the internet to a multiplayer server Each player generally needs their own copy Use a stable/default branch when reliability matters; branch compatibility must match for everyone Keyboard and mouse or controller, depending on each player’s setup Depends on the server; administration is separate from a local host
Dedicated server Players connect remotely, potentially at different times Players need access to the game; the server is a separate installation Server and clients must use compatible branches and mods Any supported client input Persistent world with independent administration and server uptime

Steam’s current Project Zomboid listing identifies Online Co-op, Shared/Split Screen Co-op, Steam Remote Play Together, local split-screen co-op and Xbox Controller Gamepad support on Windows. Those labels describe supported feature categories, not a promise that every experimental branch behaves identically.

How to play local split-screen on one PC

Local co-op is the simplest way to play together physically. One computer runs Project Zomboid, and the additional player joins that local game rather than connecting to a separate server.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

What you need

  • A Windows PC with Project Zomboid installed.
  • The host’s normal controls.
  • An additional compatible controller for the second player. A USB gamepad or Xbox-compatible PC controller is the practical choice because the Steam listing specifically identifies Xbox Controller Gamepad support on Windows.
  • A branch of the game that supports the local player-join flow you intend to use.

The available evidence does not establish a universal split-screen frame-rate figure or a single minimum hardware specification. Performance will depend on the host PC, display resolution, world activity and the number of players, so do not treat an advertised multiplayer label as a performance guarantee.

Joining a couch-co-op session

  1. Start Project Zomboid on the Windows PC that will host the session.
  2. Connect and test the host’s controls and the additional controller before loading the world. If Windows or the game does not see the second device, fix that first rather than trying to join repeatedly.
  3. Use the current build’s local split-screen player-join flow. The exact prompt can change between branches, so follow the on-screen instruction for adding a local player.
  4. Have the second player press the indicated controller button to join, then create or select that player’s survivor when the game presents the character setup.
  5. Load the desired world and confirm that both players can move and interact before starting a long run.

Local split-screen is a host session: pausing, saving, changing settings and ending the game are controlled by the computer running Project Zomboid. Treat the save as a shared world and make a backup before experimenting with a new branch or major mod change.

How Steam Remote Play Together works

Remote Play Together turns a local co-op session into a remote one. The host launches the game and keeps it running; Steam captures the game’s audio and video on that computer, streams them to the invited player, and sends the remote player’s keyboard, mouse or gamepad input back to the game process. Steam describes the experience as allowing friends to join “as though they were sitting at the same computer playing together.”

Ownership and equipment

  • Only the host needs to own and install Project Zomboid for Remote Play Together.
  • The remote participant does not need a separate copy merely to join the streamed local session.
  • A controller is strongly preferable for the remote participant. It maps naturally to a second local player and avoids trying to share the host’s keyboard and mouse controls.
  • The host needs a stable enough upload connection to stream video and receive input. Steam’s transport model means the host PC does the game simulation; the remote player is not running an independent copy.

Remote Play Together setup

  1. Install and launch Project Zomboid on the host’s computer.
  2. Open the Steam Overlay while the game is running.
  3. Choose the Remote Play Together option from the overlay and invite the friend through Steam.
  4. Wait for the friend to accept and connect. Steam will stream the host’s game view and expose the permitted input devices to the game.
  5. Return to Project Zomboid and use the local split-screen player-join prompt. The friend is joining the host’s local session, not a separate online server.
  6. Check that the remote controller is assigned to the new player. If input is controlling the host’s survivor, disconnect and reconnect the device or adjust Steam’s controller assignment before continuing.

The host should keep the Steam Overlay available because invitations and input permissions are managed there. Closing the game, losing the host’s connection or ending the host session ends the remote player’s access.

Remote Play limitations

Remote Play Together is convenient for a temporary session, but it is not a persistent server. The world exists while the host is running the game, and all simulation, saving and administration happen on the host PC. Video quality and input responsiveness can vary with the host’s upload capacity, the remote player’s connection and congestion between both locations. No authoritative latency or frame-rate figure is published for Project Zomboid Remote Play Together, so plan a short test session before committing to a long survival run.

Ordinary online co-op: how it differs

Online co-op connects separate game clients to a multiplayer server rather than streaming one local session. This is the appropriate model when everyone is remote, each person owns the game, and you want server-side administration or a world that can be managed independently of a couch-co-op host.

  • Each participant generally needs their own copy for ordinary online play.
  • All clients must use compatible game branches, mods and settings.
  • The server determines the world and connection rules; a player cannot simply join a different branch or incompatible mod set and expect it to work.
  • Online co-op can be hosted temporarily from the game or run as a separate dedicated server, depending on how persistent and configurable you need the world to be.

If one friend owns the game and the others do not, Remote Play Together is the relevant Steam option. If everyone owns a copy and you need independent clients, use online co-op instead of treating Remote Play as a substitute server.

Build 42 multiplayer status and branch safety

Build 42 multiplayer is branch-sensitive. The Indie Stone’s official 2025 announcement for Unstable Build 42.13 says, “Unstable Build 42.13, which contains multiplayer support, has been released,” but also states that “Multiplayer is WIP and has been released for stress testing.” It strongly advises, “For the best experience you are STRONGLY advised to play on whitelisted servers or in Steam co-op.”

What that means for players

  • Build 42.13 multiplayer should be treated as experimental, even though the feature is available.
  • Steam co-op, including Remote Play Together, is the option the announcement specifically recommends for the best experience on the unstable branch.
  • Whitelisted servers are another recommended route when server access is controlled.
  • Do not assume a world created on one Unstable revision will remain usable after every update.
  • The announcement warns that future Unstable updates can disrupt ongoing multiplayer games and that older saves may become incompatible.

Before switching to or from Unstable

  1. Back up your Project Zomboid saves and any configuration you cannot recreate.
  2. Read the current Unstable branch notes before starting a multiplayer world.
  3. Make sure every client and the server, if you use one, are on compatible revisions.
  4. Keep an established world on its known-working branch rather than repeatedly switching branches during an active run.
  5. Expect experimental behavior and be prepared to restore a backup if an update breaks the session.

The announcement also says it was inadvisable to exceed 20 players on a server during that unstable stress-test release. That is a warning for the specific Build 42.13 testing context, not a universal player limit for every Project Zomboid mode or future version.

Dedicated servers for persistent worlds

A dedicated server is separate from local split-screen and Remote Play Together. It can keep a world available for a group, allow players to join at different times and provide independent administration. The game’s Host option can launch a hosted session, while the Project Zomboid Dedicated Server can be installed through Steam for a separate server process.

Choose a dedicated server when you need

  • A world that does not depend on one player keeping the game open.
  • Persistent settings, permissions and scheduled administration.
  • A larger or more regular group than is practical for one couch session.
  • Control over server-side mods, backups and access lists.

Server hosting products, prices, uptime, mod support and branch compatibility change frequently. Verify those details directly at the time of purchase, and confirm that the provider supports the exact stable or Unstable branch your group intends to run. A server that supports one branch cannot make incompatible clients work automatically.

Troubleshooting common co-op problems

The second local player cannot join

  • Confirm the second controller is connected before launching or loading the session.
  • Check that the controller appears in Windows and is recognized by Steam.
  • Use the in-game local player-join prompt rather than trying to create a second online client.
  • Disconnect other gamepads temporarily if the wrong device is being assigned.

Remote Play connects, but the friend controls the wrong survivor

  • Open the Steam Overlay and review controller assignment and input permissions.
  • Have the friend reconnect the controller, then use the local player-join flow again.
  • Verify that the host’s controller remains assigned to player one.

The stream is blurry or input feels delayed

  • Test a short session before loading an important save.
  • Reduce competing network traffic on the host and remote connection.
  • Remember that the host PC is rendering and simulating the game while also streaming it.
  • If responsiveness remains unacceptable, use ordinary online co-op or a dedicated server so the remote player runs a local game client.

A Build 42 world stops working after an update

  • Stop launching the save until you have checked the current Unstable notes.
  • Restore the backup made before the branch change if necessary.
  • Put every client and server on the same compatible revision.
  • For a less experimental experience, start a new world on the stable/default branch when the multiplayer features you need are available there.

A practical decision guide

  1. Same room and one PC: choose local split-screen and connect a second compatible controller.
  2. Different locations, one owner: use Steam Remote Play Together; the owner hosts and the friend joins the local session.
  3. Different locations, everyone owns the game: use ordinary online co-op for separate clients and server-based play.
  4. Players join at different times: use a dedicated server or another persistent server arrangement rather than Remote Play.
  5. Considering Build 42: back up saves, read the current branch notes and treat multiplayer as experimental until the branch’s status changes.

For most two-player groups, local split-screen is the lowest-friction choice in one room, while Remote Play Together is the closest equivalent when the friend is elsewhere. Dedicated hosting is the structural choice for a persistent online community, not a requirement for a one-off co-op night.
