Soul sand is a Nether block with three major jobs: it supports Nether wart, forms upward bubble columns when placed beneath water source blocks, and provides the terrain that Soul Speed is designed to cross. It also slows players and mobs, can be used in traps, and is one of the two materials needed to summon the Wither. Soul soil looks similar but does not replace soul sand for Nether-wart farms or upward bubble elevators.

What soul sand does
Soul sand is a Nether block that changes movement and entity behavior as soon as an entity crosses it. Players and mobs are slowed while walking over the block, and entities sink slightly into it. That combination makes a patch of soul sand useful as a defensive obstacle, a trap component, or a deliberate hazard in an adventure map.
Movement slowdown
Ordinary movement over soul sand is slower than movement over a normal solid floor. The effect applies to players and mobs, so a corridor covered with it can delay a pursuer or give a defender time to react. Because the block affects movement rather than simply blocking a route, it can be combined with walls, doors, drops, or other hazards in a custom build.

Entity sinking and trap design
Entities sink slightly into soul sand. The visual and collision change is small, but it matters when a mob is trying to cross a narrow passage or when you are timing a trap. A continuous strip can make a route feel noticeably sluggish without requiring a full obstruction.
Lava warning
Mojang specifically warns that being near lava while standing on soul sand can set the player on fire. Treat soul-sand paths beside lava as a genuine safety hazard: use a wider safe platform, remove exposed lava where possible, or cross with a route that does not leave you standing on the block at the lava edge.

Nether wart requires soul sand as its growing base. If you are planning a Nether-wart farm, the block beneath every planted wart is the critical part of the setup; replacing it with ordinary dirt, netherrack, or soul soil does not satisfy that requirement.
Basic farm setup
- Place a row, platform, or other farm layout made from soul sand.
- Plant Nether wart on the soul-sand blocks.
- Leave enough access to inspect and harvest the crop without walking across dangerous terrain or into nearby lava.
- Keep the soul sand in place when expanding the farm. The growing requirement belongs to the block underneath the wart, not merely to the surrounding Nether environment.
Nether wart is a key ingredient in brewing potions, so a soul-sand farm is the dependable starting point for a brewing supply. The useful rule is simple: if a wart will not plant or grow in the intended spot, first verify the block directly beneath it is soul sand.

Why soul soil cannot replace it
Soul soil supports Soul Speed and soul fire, but it does not provide soul sand’s Nether-wart-growing behavior. A floor made from soul soil may look appropriate for a themed farm, yet it cannot serve as the planting base described above.
Making an upward soul-sand bubble column
Place soul sand beneath a continuous column of water source blocks and the column becomes an upward bubble elevator. Players, mobs, and dropped items can rise through it, and a player inside can restore breath while the column carries them upward.

Build procedure
- Choose the shaft where the elevator will stand and make sure its interior is tall enough for the intended travel distance.
- Place soul sand at the bottom of the shaft.
- Fill the entire shaft with water source blocks. The water must be continuous from the soul sand to the top; flowing water that has not been converted into source blocks will not create the same column.
- Enter the water above the soul sand. The upward bubbles should carry you toward the top, and the same lift applies to eligible mobs and items.
- Test the exit before enclosing the shaft. A landing platform, opening, or connecting corridor prevents the elevator from leaving entities trapped at the top.
What the column is good for
- Vertical player travel: an upward shaft can connect a lower room to a higher floor without a staircase.
- Mob or item transport: the rising current affects mobs and items as well as players, allowing vertical movement in a larger transport system.
- Emergency breathing: a player inside the column can restore breath while rising, which is useful when the shaft is used as an underwater route.
Common bubble-column failures
- No bubbles: check that the bottom block is soul sand rather than soul soil and that the water above it is a continuous set of source blocks.
- The lift stops partway: inspect the exact level where the water changes from source to flowing water. A single break in the source column can interrupt the elevator.
- Items or mobs do not arrive where expected: verify the opening and landing area at the top. The column provides upward movement, but the surrounding structure still determines where an entity can leave the shaft.
- The design works in one world but not another: confirm the Java or Bedrock version. The documented mechanics are based on Java-era Nether Update behavior, and edge cases can vary by version.
Soul Speed: crossing soul blocks faster
Soul Speed is the enchantment intended for movement across soul sand and soul soil. It increases walking speed on both blocks, and its maximum level is III. The enchantment is associated with boots, so the practical setup is a pair of boots carrying Soul Speed while you cross the soul terrain.
How to obtain Soul Speed
The documented route is piglin bartering. Soul Speed is not described as a normal table-crafted item; you acquire it through the bartering system and then use the resulting enchantment on boots according to your version’s available mechanics.

Durability cost
Soul Speed has a trade-off: Mojang states that boot durability degrades as the wearer walks across soul blocks. The enchantment therefore improves travel time but consumes the boots’ durability during the very movement it accelerates. Carry replacement boots, maintain the pair when your version allows it, or reserve Soul Speed for routes where the time saved is worth the wear.

Use Soul Speed when a route repeatedly crosses soul terrain or when a long Nether connection would otherwise be slowed. Avoid treating it as a universal movement upgrade: its benefit is tied to soul sand and soul soil, and the durability cost is tied to walking across those blocks.

The two blocks share the Soul Speed and soul-fire themes, but their practical roles are different. The table below separates the mechanics that matter when choosing a block for a build.

For a farm or elevator, choose soul sand. For a decorative floor or a route where you want Soul Speed and soul fire without those two soul-sand functions, soul soil is the appropriate distinct choice.

Summoning the Wither with soul sand
Soul sand is part of the Wither-summoning structure. You need four soul-sand blocks and three wither skeleton skulls. The structure is assembled in the world in a T shape; it is not a crafting-table recipe.

- Build a T from four soul-sand blocks: three blocks across the top and one block centered beneath them.
- Place one wither skeleton skull on each of the three top soul-sand blocks.
- Complete the structure in the world rather than placing ingredients in a crafting grid.
- If the arrangement and materials are valid for your version, the Wither-summoning process begins. Prepare the surrounding area before placing the final skull, because the event occurs at the structure itself.
Why the exact arrangement matters
A pile of four soul-sand blocks and three skulls is not enough by itself. The blocks must form the T-shaped arrangement, and all three skulls belong across the top row. If nothing happens, count the blocks and skulls, inspect the shape from the side, and make sure the final skull is placed on the intended top block.

Nether-wart production room
Use soul sand as the crop floor and keep the room’s walking lanes separate from the planting area. This preserves the required growing base while reducing unnecessary movement over the slowing block. If the farm is near lava, build a broad, protected walkway rather than relying on speed alone.
Vertical transport hub
A soul-sand bubble column can serve as the upward leg of a base’s transport system. Put the shaft where a player, mob, or item stream can enter and exit cleanly, and make every water level a source block before testing the full height. A separate downward route may be needed because the documented soul-sand column provides upward movement.

Soul-themed corridor
Soul soil can provide the visual and soul-fire theme while retaining Soul Speed compatibility. Use soul sand only where you need its slowdown, Nether-wart support, bubble-column function, or Wither structure. Mixing the blocks intentionally prevents a decorative choice from breaking a farm or elevator.

Nether wart will not grow or cannot be planted
- Look at the block directly beneath the wart.
- Replace soul soil or another block with soul sand.
- Do not assume that a Nether location alone satisfies the requirement; the base block is the decisive part of the setup.
Soul Speed seems inactive
- Confirm that the boots carrying Soul Speed are equipped.
- Test on both soul sand and soul soil; the enchantment is designed to affect each.
- Remember that the enchantment increases walking speed on those blocks rather than changing movement everywhere.
The bubble elevator does not lift
- Confirm the bottom block is soul sand.
- Convert the entire water shaft to source blocks so there is no break in continuity.
- Check the game edition and version if the build behaves differently from the documented Java-era mechanics.
The Wither structure does not activate
- Count four soul-sand blocks and three wither skeleton skulls.
- Rebuild the blocks as a T in the world.
- Place the skulls across the three top blocks, and remember that this is not a crafting-table recipe.
Version and edition considerations
The authoritative descriptions for these mechanics come from Mojang’s Nether Update-era material and a help page that lists Soul Speed’s maximum level as 3. They establish the core behavior covered here, but they do not provide a universal list of every Java and Bedrock edge case. Before publishing a technical tutorial, designing a timing-sensitive contraption, or troubleshooting a server, check the exact game edition, version, and server implementation you are using.
That qualification matters most for details that are not central to the block’s identity: collision behavior at unusual heights, transport interactions with specific mobs or items, and changes introduced after the Nether Update. The core decisions remain stable: soul sand is the Nether-wart base, the upward bubble-column block, the movement-slowing terrain, and part of the Wither structure; soul soil is not a substitute for those soul-sand functions.
