How to Set Up Redis as a Cache for MySQL with PHP on a Linux VPS

A production-focused guide to running Redis privately beside MySQL on a Linux VPS, with Predis and PhpRedis setup, cache-aside PHP code, invalidation, locking, and troubleshooting.

Use Redis as a fast, private read-through layer in front of MySQL—not as a replacement for MySQL. The dependable design is cache-aside: PHP checks a namespaced Redis key, queries MySQL only on a miss, stores the result with a TTL, and deletes that key after a successful database write. A short, token-protected lock prevents many requests from rebuilding the same hot key at once.

This guide covers installation on common Linux VPS distributions, Redis hardening, the Predis and PhpRedis clients, complete PHP/MySQL examples, invalidation, stampede protection, monitoring, and recovery procedures.

What the Redis–MySQL cache actually does

MySQL remains the source of truth. Redis holds temporary copies of data that is expensive or frequent to read. A request first looks in Redis; if the key exists, PHP returns the cached value without a MySQL query. If it does not, PHP reads MySQL, writes the result to Redis with an expiration, and returns it.

This cache-aside pattern gives you a bounded staleness window (the TTL) and an explicit invalidation action when data changes. Redis describes deleting the cache entry after a write and allowing the next read to repopulate it as the simplest and safest synchronization approach. Redis can provide sub-millisecond reads for a hot working set, but that is a qualitative description, not a guaranteed MySQL/PHP/VPS benchmark.

Request flow

  1. Construct a key such as cache:app:product:123.
  2. Ask Redis for that key.
  3. If a value is present, decode it and return it.
  4. On a miss, select the row from MySQL.
  5. Encode the result and store it in Redis with a TTL.
  6. Return the database result.
  7. After a successful insert, update, or delete in MySQL, delete the corresponding Redis key.

Prerequisites and architecture decisions

  • A Linux VPS with administrative access and a service manager such as systemd.
  • PHP 7.4 or newer; PHP 8.x is the recommended baseline in Redis’s PHP tutorial.
  • MySQL credentials for the application and a PHP database driver such as PDO MySQL.
  • Composer if you choose Predis, or permission to install and enable a PECL extension if you choose PhpRedis.
  • A Redis service reachable from PHP, normally on TCP port 6379.

For a single VPS, run Redis on the same machine and bind it only to a local interface. If Redis runs on a separate host, use a private network, encrypted transport, or a tunnel; do not send an unauthenticated Redis connection across the public internet.

Install Redis on the VPS

Use the official Redis installation path for your operating system. The exact package version and service-file location vary by distribution, so do not mix commands from different families.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ubuntu or Debian

  1. Update package metadata with your distribution’s package manager.
  2. Install the Redis server package from the official APT instructions.
  3. Keep the package’s systemd service enabled so Redis starts after a reboot.
  4. Review the generated Redis configuration before accepting external connections.

Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux

  1. Enable the repository or module required by the official Redis RPM instructions.
  2. Install the Redis server package with the distribution’s RPM-based package manager.
  3. Enable and start the Redis service through systemd.
  4. Check the configuration and firewall before allowing application traffic.

Docker

The official Redis Docker image is suitable when your VPS already uses Docker for service management. Persist the Redis data directory if you need data to survive container recreation, expose the port only to the application network, and provide configuration through a mounted file or container arguments. A container does not make a public Redis listener safe by itself.

Choose persistence deliberately

A cache can usually be rebuilt, so losing Redis data is normally a performance event rather than data loss. If you enable RDB snapshots or append-only persistence, place the files on storage with enough capacity and include them in your backup and restore plan. Do not treat a Redis backup as a substitute for MySQL backups.

Secure Redis before connecting PHP

Redis warns that an internet-exposed instance without security is very easy to exploit. Apply all of the following that fit your topology:

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed
  • Bind narrowly: listen on loopback for a same-VPS deployment, or on the private interface used by the PHP host. Do not bind to every interface unless a private network and firewall policy require it.
  • Authenticate: configure Redis authentication and keep the secret outside the web root, preferably in an environment variable or an OS-level secret store.
  • Filter the port: allow TCP 6379 only from the application host or private subnet. Never leave it open to the whole internet.
  • Encrypt off-host traffic: use Redis TLS where supported, or carry the connection through a VPN or SSH tunnel when traffic leaves a trusted host.
  • Separate applications: use distinct logical databases only as an organizational aid; namespaced keys and separate credentials or instances provide stronger isolation.

After changing Redis configuration, restart the service through the host’s service manager and inspect its logs. A syntax error or an invalid directive can prevent the daemon from starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the daemon and its startup behavior

  1. From the VPS, run redis-cli PING. A healthy local service returns PONG.
  2. Check the service status with your init system, for example systemctl status redis or the service name supplied by your distribution.
  3. Enable the service for boot, using the service manager’s enable command.
  4. Confirm that PHP can reach the same host, port, and authentication settings. A successful shell test does not prove that PHP-FPM uses the same network namespace or credentials.

If PING fails, check that Redis is running, that the configured bind address includes the interface you are using, and that a local firewall is not blocking the port. If Redis works locally but not from another host, inspect both the Redis bind setting and the VPS firewall.

Predis or PhpRedis?

Both clients speak Redis’s protocol, but they have different deployment implications.

Consideration Predis PhpRedis
Installation Composer package: composer require predis/predis PECL extension; enable it in php.ini
Runtime form PHP user-space library Compiled PHP extension
PHP-FPM/Web restart Not required for installing the package, although deploy your code normally Required after enabling or changing the extension
Deployment portability Works where Composer dependencies can be shipped Requires matching PHP version, ABI, package, and server configuration
Operational control Managed with application dependencies Managed with PHP modules and host packages
Expected overhead Additional user-space PHP work for protocol handling Native extension generally reduces client-side overhead

Choose Predis when you need a Composer-only deployment or cannot install server extensions. Choose PhpRedis when you control the VPS image and want a native extension with centralized PHP module management. Measure your own workload before promising a performance difference; the supplied Redis guidance does not publish a MySQL/PHP/VPS benchmark.

Configure the PHP client

Predis with Composer

  1. From the application directory, run composer require predis/predis.
  2. Load Composer’s autoloader in your application.
  3. Create a client pointed at the private Redis host and port, supplying authentication and TLS options when your deployment needs them.
  4. Reuse one client configuration per PHP request rather than constructing unrelated clients for every cache call.
<?php
require __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';

$redis = new PredisClient([
    'scheme' => 'tcp',
    'host'   => getenv('REDIS_HOST') ?: '127.0.0.1',
    'port'   => (int) (getenv('REDIS_PORT') ?: 6379),
    'password' => getenv('REDIS_PASSWORD') ?: null,
]);

Use the connection scheme and TLS options documented by the client when Redis is remote and encrypted. Do not hard-code a production password in source control.

PhpRedis with PECL

  1. Install the PhpRedis extension with PECL using the PHP version’s matching development tools.
  2. Add or enable the extension in the active php.ini.
  3. Restart PHP-FPM or the web server so the worker processes load the module.
  4. Confirm the module is loaded in the same SAPI that serves the application.
<?php
$redis = new Redis();
$redis->connect(getenv('REDIS_HOST') ?: '127.0.0.1', (int) (getenv('REDIS_PORT') ?: 6379));
if ($password = getenv('REDIS_PASSWORD')) {
    $redis->auth($password);
}

A command-line php -m check can inspect the CLI SAPI, while PHP-FPM may load a different configuration. Verify the module from a controlled diagnostic endpoint or an FPM-side health check, then remove that endpoint or restrict it.

Implement cache-aside around MySQL

The example below stores one product row as JSON. JSON keeps the value portable between Predis and PhpRedis and makes the cache easy to inspect. For larger objects or partial updates, Redis hashes are another option; use HSET and read fields with HGETALL.

<?php
function productKey(int $id): string {
    return 'cache:app:product:' . $id;
}

function getProduct(PDO $db, Redis $redis, int $id): ?array {
    $key = productKey($id);
    $cached = $redis->get($key);

    if ($cached !== false && $cached !== null) {
        return json_decode($cached, true, 512, JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR);
    }

    $stmt = $db->prepare(
        'SELECT id, name, price, updated_at FROM products WHERE id = :id'
    );
    $stmt->execute(['id' => $id]);
    $product = $stmt->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC);

    if ($product === false) {
        return null;
    }

    $redis->setex($key, 300, json_encode($product, JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR));
    return $product;
}

The five-minute TTL in this example is an implementation choice, not a universal recommendation. Select a value from how quickly the data changes and how much stale data the product can tolerate. Cache only successful, complete results unless you intentionally design negative caching for missing rows.

Namespaced keys prevent collisions

Use a stable prefix that identifies the application and object type, followed by an escaped identifier: cache:app:product:123. Include a tenant, locale, currency, permission scope, or version when those dimensions change the result. Never let untrusted user input create arbitrary key prefixes or commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle cache failures without taking down MySQL

A cache outage should normally degrade to a database read. Catch Redis connection and command exceptions, log them with request context, and continue with MySQL when safe. Do not hide database errors behind a generic cache miss, and do not retry Redis indefinitely inside a web request; short bounded timeouts prevent a dead cache from consuming every PHP worker.

Invalidate after every successful MySQL write

For an update, insert, or delete, commit the MySQL transaction first and then delete the affected key. If the transaction rolls back, leave the old cache untouched. Deleting after commit means a subsequent read fetches the current row and repopulates Redis.

<?php
$db->beginTransaction();
try {
    $stmt = $db->prepare(
        'UPDATE products SET name = :name, price = :price WHERE id = :id'
    );
    $stmt->execute(['name' => $name, 'price' => $price, 'id' => $id]);
    $db->commit();
    $redis->del(productKey($id));
} catch (Throwable $e) {
    if ($db->inTransaction()) {
        $db->rollBack();
    }
    throw $e;
}

If one write changes several cached representations—such as a product detail key and a category listing—delete every affected key. A wildcard delete can block Redis and remove unrelated tenants; keep an index of derived keys or version the namespace instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop cache stampedes on hot keys

When a popular key expires, many PHP workers can miss simultaneously and all issue the same MySQL query. Protect the refill path with a short single-flight lock. The lock TTL must exceed the worst-case MySQL read plus serialization time. Always store a random ownership token so one request cannot delete another request’s lock after its own lock has expired.

<?php
$key = productKey($id);
$lockKey = $key . ':lock';
$token = bin2hex(random_bytes(16));
$lockTtl = 10; // Must exceed the worst-case refill time.

if ($redis->set($lockKey, $token, ['nx', 'ex' => $lockTtl])) {
    try {
        // Re-check after taking the lock: another worker may have filled it.
        $cached = $redis->get($key);
        if ($cached === false || $cached === null) {
            $product = loadProductFromMySQL($db, $id);
            if ($product !== null) {
                $redis->setex($key, 300, json_encode($product, JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR));
            }
        }
    } finally {
        // Execute a compare-and-delete Lua script so only the owner unlocks.
        $redis->eval(
            "if redis.call('get', KEYS[1]) == ARGV[1] then " .
            "return redis.call('del', KEYS[1]) else return 0 end",
            [$lockKey, $token],
            1
        );
    }
} else {
    // Briefly wait, then retry the cache read rather than querying MySQL immediately.
}

On a lock miss, sleep for a small bounded interval and retry Redis. If the lock holder fails, its TTL releases the lock. Keep the wait shorter than your request timeout and define a fallback for sustained contention, such as serving a slightly stale value or allowing one uncached read.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Choose TTLs and data formats deliberately

  • Short TTL: fresher data and quicker recovery from missed invalidations, but more MySQL traffic.
  • Long TTL: better hit rate for stable data, but a larger stale window if invalidation fails.
  • JSON strings: simple whole-object replacement and easy debugging.
  • Hashes: field-level access with HSET/HGETALL, useful when consumers need only part of a record.
  • Versioned namespaces: change a prefix such as cache:v2:... for a schema-wide flush instead of scanning and deleting every key.

Add a small random jitter to TTLs for large groups of keys created together. This spreads expirations over time and complements, but does not replace, single-flight locking.

Observe hits, misses, and expiry

Operational visibility tells you whether Redis is helping and whether invalidation is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Inspect a hash with redis-cli HGETALL cache:app:product:123.
  • Check remaining lifetime with redis-cli TTL cache:app:product:123. A positive value is seconds remaining; a negative response indicates no expiration or a missing key, depending on the Redis response.
  • Count cache hits, cache misses, MySQL reads, lock acquisitions, lock-contention retries, Redis errors, and stale-result incidents in application metrics.
  • Log key type, namespace, operation, latency, and outcome without logging passwords or sensitive cached values.
  • Watch MySQL query rate and latency alongside Redis hit rate; a higher hit rate is not useful if invalidation serves incorrect data.

Set alerts for Redis unavailability, memory pressure, sustained lock contention, and an unexpected drop in hit rate. Keep a runbook that explains how to bypass the cache temporarily and how to flush only the affected namespace.

Common failures and fixes

Redis refuses connections

Check the service status and logs, then verify the bind address, port, password, and firewall rule. Confirm that PHP-FPM uses the same environment variables as the shell or deployment process.

PhpRedis appears installed but PHP cannot find it

Inspect the FPM configuration rather than only CLI output. Ensure the extension directive is enabled in the active php.ini, restart PHP-FPM, and verify the loaded module from the serving SAPI.

Data remains stale after an update

Confirm that deletion occurs only after a successful MySQL commit, that every derived key is removed, and that readers use exactly the same namespace and dimensions as writers. Check for a second application or worker writing an old value back into Redis.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MySQL load spikes whenever keys expire

Add the token-protected lock, re-check the key after acquiring it, and use TTL jitter for synchronized populations. Review lock TTL against the slowest observed database read.

Redis memory fills

Reduce TTLs or payload size, remove unused namespaces, and configure an eviction policy appropriate for a cache. Eviction is not a data-integrity mechanism: the application must continue to work when any key disappears.

Production checklist

  • Redis is bound to a private interface or loopback, authenticated, firewalled, and encrypted or tunneled when traffic leaves a trusted host.
  • The service starts through the VPS service manager and returns PONG to a local health check.
  • PHP 7.4+ is installed; PHP 8.x is preferred; the selected client is installed correctly for the serving SAPI.
  • Keys include an application namespace and every dimension that changes the result.
  • Cache-aside reads query MySQL only on misses and set an explicit expiration on successful fills.
  • Every successful write deletes all affected keys after commit.
  • Hot-key refills use a short lock with an expiration and ownership token.
  • Redis failures have bounded timeouts and a safe MySQL fallback.
  • Metrics cover hits, misses, database reads, errors, latency, expirations, and lock contention.
  • MySQL remains backed up as the authoritative store; Redis data can be rebuilt.
