Spawn eggs are Creative-mode and command items that create a chosen mob immediately. In a normal, unmodified Survival world, you cannot obtain them through ordinary gameplay. You can use one in Survival only after a permitted command, Creative inventory transfer, or server administrator has supplied it.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Select the egg, aim at a suitable surface, and press the platform’s use button. You can also use an egg on an existing compatible mob to produce a baby, place it in a dispenser for redstone automation, or use it on a monster spawner to change that spawner’s creature.

What a Minecraft spawn egg is
A spawn egg is an item tied to one particular mob. It is not a single universal egg with a menu of creatures: a zombie spawn egg creates zombies, a cow spawn egg creates cows, and so on. Mojang’s official explanation described the family as “69 different items” in an article published on January 6, 2022. That number is a dated count, not a promise about the catalog in a current Java or Bedrock release; new mobs and edition differences can change the total.
Spawn eggs first appeared in Minecraft 1.1, released in 2012. Their purpose is controlled placement rather than natural spawning: the selected creature appears when the egg’s spawning action is used. This makes eggs useful for Creative building, map-making, testing farms, populating custom arenas, and setting up repeatable redstone systems.

Each egg is consumed when it successfully creates a mob. The item’s behavior is separate from a normal chicken egg: a spawn egg is not thrown as a projectile, and its identity determines the mob that appears.
How to get spawn eggs
There are two normal acquisition routes in an unmodified game: take them from the Creative inventory or obtain them with commands. Both routes require permissions that are intentionally unavailable in an ordinary no-cheat Survival world.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCreative inventory
- Enter a world in Creative mode, or switch to Creative if your world’s permission settings allow it.
- Open the inventory and search for the mob’s name followed by “spawn egg.”
- Move the required egg to your hotbar or inventory.
The exact inventory category and search presentation can change between Java and Bedrock releases, so searching by the mob name is more reliable than relying on a remembered tab position. A server may also restrict inventory access even when the player is otherwise in Creative.
Commands and cheats
Commands can place a specific egg in a player’s inventory, but the world or server must permit command use. In Java Edition, enable Allow Commands while creating the world, or open the world’s options and enable it later when that option is available. On a multiplayer server or Realm, you need the appropriate operator or administrator permission.
In Bedrock single-player, turn on Allow Cheats in the world’s Game settings. Bedrock warns that enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world, even if you later turn cheats off. That consequence applies to the world, so create a copy or a separate testing world if achievements matter to you.

Can you get a spawn egg in Survival?
In a normal, unmodified, no-cheat Survival world, there is no ordinary gameplay route that supplies spawn eggs. They are not a standard drop from the mob they represent, and routine exploration does not provide a general spawn-egg source. Mojang’s description summarizes the rule: spawn eggs are impossible to obtain without cheats or Creative Mode.

If an operator gives you an egg, a map distributes one, or you transfer one from a permitted inventory, you can select it and use it while still playing Survival. The item does not force a permanent switch to Creative; the permission or transfer that supplied it is the exceptional part.
For a shared world, agree on the rules before enabling commands. In Bedrock, the achievement lock is permanent for that world. On a server, administrators can instead provide a prepared map or item without granting every player command access, depending on the server’s tools and policies.
How to use a spawn egg
The basic interaction is the same in Java and Bedrock, although button names depend on your device.
- Put the desired spawn egg in your hotbar and select it.
- Look at a solid surface or other valid placement area with enough room for the mob’s bounding box.
- Press the platform’s use button. The creature appears immediately if the location is valid.
- Move away or provide additional space if the mob is large, hostile, or likely to damage nearby builds.
An egg can fail to create a creature when the target is unsuitable, the mob has no room, the location is outside the allowed spawning conditions for that interaction, or the item is being used on the wrong target. Check the block you are aiming at, clear a larger area, and try again rather than repeatedly clicking the same obstructed spot.

Creating a baby mob
To request a baby version, aim the egg at an existing mob of the appropriate type and use the egg on that mob. This is a targeted interaction: it is different from using the egg on the ground, which creates a new creature beside the targeted surface. Baby conversion is supported for applicable animal interactions, but an egg cannot turn every mob into a baby. If nothing happens, verify that the existing mob matches the egg and that the edition and current version support that pairing.
Because the interaction consumes an egg when it succeeds, keep a spare and watch the target before using the item. In a crowded pen, aim carefully so you do not create an additional adult on the floor when your intention was a baby.
Using an egg on a monster spawner
Use a spawn egg directly on a monster spawner to change which creature that spawner produces. This is a configuration action, not a one-time spawn: the spawner’s future output is retargeted to the mob represented by the egg. Make sure you are aiming at the spawner block itself, not at the floor in front of it.
Retargeting is especially useful in Creative testing and custom maps. Hostile mobs can damage nearby structures, so isolate the spawner and test its output before placing it in a public area.
Putting a spawn egg in a dispenser
A dispenser can automate the spawning action. Place the egg in a dispenser, connect the dispenser to a redstone trigger, and activate it. The dispenser uses the egg’s spawning behavior; it does not fire the item as a thrown chicken egg.

- Place a dispenser facing the area where you want the mob to appear.
- Open the dispenser and insert one or more matching spawn eggs.
- Connect a button, lever, pressure plate, clock, or another redstone source.
- Trigger the circuit and observe the first activation from a safe distance.
- Adjust the facing, floor space, timing, and stock of eggs before making the system repeat.
Each successful activation consumes one egg. A rapid clock can empty the dispenser quickly and create more mobs than the area can safely hold, so use a controllable trigger while testing. Leave enough room in front of the dispenser for the creature’s size and behavior; a large or hostile mob can become trapped, escape, or damage the build.
Commands for spawn eggs
Command syntax is edition- and version-sensitive. Entity IDs, item IDs, and command arguments should be checked with the current command help or the reference for the edition you are actually playing. Do not assume that a Java command copied into Bedrock, or an old command copied into a new release, will work unchanged.
Java Edition example
With commands enabled and permission to run them, a current Java-style item command is:
/give @s minecraft:zombie_spawn_egg 1
This gives the executing player one zombie spawn egg. Replace the item ID with the required mob’s spawn-egg ID, and change the count when needed. The in-game command autocomplete is useful for confirming the exact ID available in your release.
Bedrock Edition workflow
Bedrock command syntax and available entity identifiers differ from Java. Open chat, begin the /give command, and use the game’s autocomplete suggestions to select the spawn-egg item exposed by your version. If the suggestion does not appear, check that cheats are enabled, that you have permission, and that the mob is available in that edition and release. Enabling cheats has the permanent achievement consequence described earlier.

Commands can also be used to transfer an egg between inventories or to prepare a map, but they do not create a legitimate no-cheat Survival source. On a server, the command can fail simply because your role lacks permission; ask the administrator rather than repeatedly changing client settings.

| Question | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Permission setting | Use Allow Commands when creating the world or in applicable world options | Use Allow Cheats in Game settings |
| Achievements | Java’s setting does not carry the Bedrock achievement warning described here | Enabling cheats permanently disables achievements in that world, even after cheats are disabled |
| Basic use | Select the egg, aim, and press the use button | Select the egg, aim, and press the use button |
| Commands | Use Java item/entity IDs and syntax for the current release | Use Bedrock IDs and syntax; confirm them with in-game autocomplete or current Bedrock documentation |
| Catalog | Version-sensitive; do not treat an old complete list as current | Version-sensitive and not necessarily identical to Java |
The shared interaction is simple, but command setup and the available egg list are not interchangeable. Identify the edition from the title screen or launcher, then check the release number before troubleshooting an ID or a missing egg.
Version history and catalog warnings
The often-quoted total of 69 spawn-egg items comes from Mojang’s January 6, 2022 article. It accurately describes that article’s count at the time, but it should not be presented as the current Java-and-Bedrock total. Editions add, remove, or organize content differently, and new mobs can change the family.
A useful example is Java snapshot 22w44a. That snapshot added Creative eggs for the Ender Dragon, Iron Golem, Snow Golem, and Wither. In that snapshot, the Ender Dragon and Wither eggs remained command-only to reduce accidental destruction of builds. This is historical snapshot behavior, not a guarantee that every current release handles those eggs the same way.
When writing a command, building a map, or documenting a tutorial, record the edition and version alongside the item ID. A command that worked in a snapshot may be unavailable in a later release, and a mob listed in one edition’s Creative inventory may be absent or command-only in another.

Common problems and fixes
The egg is not in the inventory
- Confirm that you are in Creative or that a permitted command supplied the item.
- Search the inventory by the mob’s name and “spawn egg” rather than browsing a remembered category.
- Check the edition and version; catalogs are not fixed.
- On a server or Realm, ask whether your role is allowed to receive or use the item.
The command is rejected
- Verify that commands or cheats are enabled in that world.
- Confirm your operator or administrator permission on multiplayer.
- Use the correct Java or Bedrock syntax and let autocomplete supply the identifier.
- Check spelling, underscores, and the release’s available entity IDs.
Nothing spawns when you use the egg
- Aim at a clear surface with sufficient headroom and floor space.
- Move away from a crowded pen, wall, or obstruction and try again.
- Check that you are using the egg on the intended target; baby creation and ground spawning are different interactions.
- For a dispenser, verify its facing, redstone signal, and remaining egg stock.
The result is dangerous or destructive
Test hostile, large, or high-impact mobs in a separate Creative area before putting them near a base. Keep dispensers on a manual switch until their timing is proven, and do not assume a historical command-only restriction still protects a current build.
Choosing the right method
| Your goal | Best-fit method | Why | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Place one creature while building | Creative inventory | Fast, visual, and does not require typing an ID | Requires Creative access |
| Give a specific player a known egg | Command | Precise and scriptable | Edition syntax and permissions |
| Keep achievements in a Bedrock world | Use a separate prepared map or an administrator-supplied item without enabling cheats in that world | Avoids turning on Bedrock cheats | The host must provide the item through an allowed method |
| Produce mobs repeatedly | Dispenser plus redstone | Repeatable activation | Consumes one egg per successful spawn and can overload an area |
| Convert a spawner’s output | Use the egg on the spawner | Changes the spawner’s creature type | Test the new mob in a protected area |
Safety and planning checklist
- Identify the edition and exact game version before relying on a catalog or command.
- Make a backup or use a test world before enabling cheats, especially in Bedrock.
- Clear a large enough area for the mob you are placing.
- Keep hostile or destructive mobs away from valuable builds during testing.
- Use a manual redstone trigger first; add automatic timing only after one activation behaves correctly.
- Count your eggs before building a dispenser loop, because every successful activation consumes one.
- When aiming at an existing mob, verify that you want a baby interaction rather than a new ground spawn.
Spawn eggs are therefore best understood as controlled creation tools: Creative inventory and commands provide access, direct use creates a mob, targeted use can request a baby, dispensers make the action repeatable, and a monster-spawner interaction changes future output. The exact catalog and command form depend on the edition and release, so treat old lists and snapshot examples as historical references rather than universal rules.
