Craft a Minecraft Spyglass with one Amethyst Shard and two Copper Ingots. On a crafting table, put the shard in the top-middle slot, then put one copper ingot in the middle-middle slot and one in the bottom-middle slot. What the Spyglass does
The Spyglass is a vanilla Minecraft viewing tool for examining something far away without walking up to it. Hold it in your hand and use the item to look through a circular magnified view. Mojang describes the purpose plainly: “Spyglasses make far-away things larger so you can see them more clearly.”

That makes the item useful before you commit to a route or expose yourself to danger. You can inspect a shape on the horizon, check a structure before approaching, or review a build from outside its immediate area. It improves what you can identify at a distance; it does not replace ordinary movement, combat, or a safe position.
The Spyglass view is tied to your configured field of view rather than being one universal zoom value. A player using a wider FOV receives a wider Spyglass view than a player using a narrower FOV, although both follow the same one-tenth relationship described by Mojang.

The arrangement is a single vertical column. The result is one Spyglass. The official recipe description identifies the same requirement as two Copper Ingots and one Amethyst Shard.
How to craft it
- Collect one Amethyst Shard.
- Collect or smelt two Copper Ingots.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the Amethyst Shard in the top-middle cell of the 3-by-3 grid.
- Place one Copper Ingot in the middle-middle cell.
- Place the second Copper Ingot in the bottom-middle cell.
- Take the Spyglass from the output slot.
Do not scatter the ingredients around the grid. If the output does not appear, clear the grid and rebuild the exact vertical pattern before checking anything else.

How to get the two materials
Copper Ingots: smelt raw copper
Copper Ingots come from smelting copper material. The practical starting points are Copper Ore and Raw Copper; the official Minecraft guidance specifically directs players to obtain ingots by smelting Raw Copper. Put the raw material in a furnace or another suitable smelting block, supply fuel, and collect the resulting ingots when processing finishes.
You need two ingots for one Spyglass, so plan for two completed outputs rather than two pieces of ore. If you are preparing several Spyglasses, multiply the recipe: each additional item consumes two more Copper Ingots and one more Amethyst Shard.
- Verify that the furnace input is Raw Copper or an accepted copper source, not an unrelated stone or metal item.
- Wait for the smelting operation to finish before removing the ingots.
- Keep the two ingots together in your inventory so the crafting pattern is easy to place correctly.
Amethyst Shard: harvest a mature cluster in a geode
Amethyst Shards are obtained underground in an amethyst geode. Look for fully grown amethyst clusters and break those harvestable clusters to obtain shards. The cluster is the part that supplies the lens material for the Spyglass.

Several blocks in a geode look similar but are not interchangeable for this purpose. An amethyst block is a building block, while budding amethyst is the growth block that produces clusters. Neither should be treated as a substitute for a fully grown cluster when you are trying to obtain a shard. If you see a cluster that is still growing, return after it has reached its mature form and harvest that cluster.
A simple ingredient checklist
- One Amethyst Shard from a fully grown amethyst cluster.
- Two Copper Ingots made by smelting copper material.
- Access to a crafting table for the 3-by-3 recipe grid.
These are the only recipe materials established for the Spyglass. You do not need a separate lens, glass pane, string, or special workstation.
How to use a Spyglass
Activate the view
- Move the Spyglass into your active hotbar slot.
- Hold it in your hand.
- Right-click in Java Edition, or press the platform’s normal use-item control in Bedrock Edition.
- Keep the view aimed at the distant object you want to inspect.
- Stop using the item to return to the normal first-person view.
The exact button label can vary by platform or a player’s custom controls, but the action is the ordinary use-item command. If nothing happens, confirm that the Spyglass is actually selected rather than merely stored in the inventory.
Understand the FOV-based magnification
Mojang’s 2022 figures describe the Spyglass as providing one tenth of the player’s configured field of view. The default values differ by edition:

The approximate values are calculated from the defaults reported by Mojang in 2022. They are not a promise that every player sees exactly the same framing: changing FOV changes the Spyglass view as well. A player who has adjusted FOV should judge the result against that personal setting rather than against the default examples.

Control comfort in Bedrock Edition
Bedrock documentation notes that camera movement is slowed while you look through a Spyglass. The Spyglass Damping slider in Settings lets you tune that movement response. Treat this as a comfort and control adjustment; it does not alter the recipe or the basic distant-view function.
Useful ways to apply the Spyglass
Scan a route before leaving safety
Climb to a secure vantage point and sweep the horizon before choosing a direction. A Spyglass can help you look for villages, towers, portals, ships, or other recognizable structures. This lets you compare possible routes before spending time crossing difficult terrain or approaching an unknown area.
Identify a distant moving shape
At long range, a moving silhouette can be difficult to classify. Use the Spyglass to decide whether the shape is a useful mob, a hostile mob, or simply a piece of terrain that looked animated from a distance. Make the identification from a protected position whenever possible; the magnified view does not make nearby threats disappear.
Inspect a build from outside
Builders can step back from a structure and check its silhouette, roofline, and broad alignment. A distant view reveals proportions that are easy to miss while standing against the wall. Use the Spyglass for the overview, then return to normal view for block-level placement.
Check landmarks while navigating
When a landmark is visible but not yet close, magnification can confirm that you are heading toward the intended feature rather than a similar-looking hill or tree line. This is particularly useful when several possible reference points are visible at once.

Pair magnification with a safe position
A good viewing location matters as much as the item. Stop in a lit, enclosed, or otherwise defensible spot before looking through the Spyglass. Because your attention is focused on the magnified view, choose a place where a nearby threat cannot easily reach you while you are scanning.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences
The core item is shared: both editions use the same one-shard, two-ingot recipe and provide the same basic ability to enlarge distant objects. The practical differences documented for players concern default FOV and camera comfort.

The edition differences do not require separate crafting instructions. If a Java and Bedrock player compare screenshots, their default framing can differ because their default FOV values differ. Changing either player’s FOV changes that player’s Spyglass framing too.

Client-side zoom features can behave differently depending on the software and configuration involved. The Spyglass is the consistent vanilla option described here: it has a defined recipe, a defined use action, and FOV-dependent behavior in both major editions.

The recipe produces no Spyglass
- Confirm that you opened a crafting table rather than a smaller grid.
- Check that the Amethyst Shard is in the top-middle slot.
- Check that the two Copper Ingots occupy the middle-middle and bottom-middle slots.
- Make sure the copper items are ingots, not Raw Copper or Copper Ore.
- Remove all items and place them again in one vertical column.
You cannot obtain an Amethyst Shard
Return to an underground amethyst geode and inspect the growths carefully. Break a fully grown amethyst cluster, not an amethyst block and not budding amethyst. A growth that has not reached its mature cluster form is not the harvest target described for the recipe.

You have copper but no ingots
Put Raw Copper into a furnace or another suitable smelting block and provide fuel. Copper Ore and Raw Copper are starting materials; the Spyglass recipe accepts the finished Copper Ingots.
The view looks different from a friend’s view
Compare FOV settings before assuming the item is behaving differently. Mojang’s one-tenth rule applies to configured FOV, and Java and Bedrock have different defaults: 70° and 60°, respectively. A changed personal FOV can therefore make the Spyglass appear wider or narrower than the default examples.
The camera feels too sensitive or too slow in Bedrock
Open Settings and adjust the Spyglass Damping slider. This setting controls the slowed camera movement documented for Bedrock while the Spyglass is active; it does not change how far the item magnifies.
You are surprised by a nearby threat while looking
Move to a defensible location before activating the item. Use short scans, stop viewing when you need to check your surroundings, and avoid standing in an exposed area simply because a distant landmark is interesting.
A practical Spyglass workflow
- Prepare the item: craft the Spyglass from one Amethyst Shard and two Copper Ingots and place it in an accessible hotbar slot.
- Choose cover: use a secure ledge, enclosed opening, or other position that limits surprise attacks.
- Set expectations: remember that your configured FOV determines the framing, so do not compare your view directly with someone using another FOV.
- Scan systematically: sweep left to right across the horizon instead of staring at one ambiguous shape.
- Classify what you see: decide whether the target is terrain, a useful or hostile mob, or a structure such as a village, tower, portal, or ship.
- Plan the approach: choose a route only after checking the terrain and nearby dangers in normal view.
- Lower the Spyglass before moving: return to ordinary view so you can monitor your immediate surroundings while traveling.
This workflow keeps the item in its intended role: a compact reconnaissance tool that helps you make better decisions before you move closer.
