Start with sudo modprobe tun, then verify that /dev/net/tun exists and that your OpenVPN profile requests the intended dev tun or dev tap interface. If the command fails, the correct fix depends on whether the problem is a missing module, a missing device node, a permission or security policy, restricted host exposure, or an OpenVPN configuration mismatch.

A successful modprobe command is only one checkpoint. It does not prove that the OpenVPN process can open the device. Work through the layers below in order; do not troubleshoot certificates or firewall rules until the virtual interface can be opened.

What the modprobe TUN error means
Linux presents TUN/TAP as a kernel networking facility. TUN creates a virtual layer-3 IP interface; TAP creates a virtual layer-2 Ethernet interface. OpenVPN opens the corresponding character device and exchanges packets through it. On a conventional Linux installation, that device is /dev/net/tun.
modprobe is the utility used to add or remove kernel modules while handling their dependencies and options. Running sudo modprobe tun asks the running kernel to load the TUN driver when it is available as a module. The OpenVPN manual documents the baseline recovery pair as creating the device node with major number 10 and minor number 200, then loading the driver:

mknod /dev/net/tun c 10 200
modprobe tunThose commands address different layers. A loaded module does not automatically repair a deleted device node, and a correctly created node does not help when a container, virtual machine, or security policy prevents access to the host’s TUN implementation.
Run this diagnosis sequence first
1. Confirm the host and running kernel
These instructions apply to Linux. Identify the exact kernel that is running:
uname -rRecord the complete result, including distribution-specific suffixes. Kernel modules are built for particular kernel builds. If the system was upgraded but not rebooted, the installed module files may belong to a different kernel than the one shown here.
2. Check whether TUN is already loaded
lsmod | grep '^tunb'A line beginning with tun indicates that the module is loaded. No output does not automatically mean failure: TUN may be built into the kernel rather than loaded as a separate module, or the module may simply not have been requested yet.
3. Attempt to load the module
sudo modprobe tunA clean return means that modprobe completed without reporting an error. It is not an end-to-end test. Continue by checking the device node and OpenVPN’s ability to open it.
4. Inspect module metadata
modinfo tunIf metadata is displayed, the running system can see a TUN module or its built-in metadata. If modinfo reports that the module is absent, inspect the distribution’s kernel-module packages and kernel configuration. Install the module package that matches the kernel reported by uname -r, or boot the kernel for which the matching modules are installed. Do not copy a tun module from another kernel build; an apparently similar file can fail to load or destabilize the system.

Some kernels compile TUN directly into the kernel. In that case there may be no separate loadable file even though TUN support is present. Check the distribution’s kernel configuration or documentation and the running kernel’s module state before treating a missing modinfo file as proof that the feature is unavailable.
5. Check the device node
ls -l /dev/net/tunThe expected result is a character device at that exact path. If the path does not exist, and you have permission to create device nodes on this host, use the OpenVPN-documented baseline:
sudo mkdir -p /dev/net
sudo mknod /dev/net/tun c 10 200
sudo chmod 0666 /dev/net/tunThe major and minor numbers, 10,200, identify the Linux TUN device. A mode of 0666 allows every local user to open the node and should be treated as a diagnostic baseline, not an automatic security recommendation. Prefer ownership and mode settings that match your service account and distribution policy once the cause is understood. If mknod is blocked, the host administrator or the environment’s device-management system must provide the node.
6. Check the OpenVPN device selection
Inspect the profile or service configuration for the device directives. A routed VPN normally uses:

dev tapOpenVPN also supports explicit selection with --dev, --dev-type, and --dev-node. If --dev-node points somewhere other than /dev/net/tun, verify that the specified path exists and is accessible. The device type must match the rest of the profile; a server configuration using --server requires dev tun or dev tap.
7. Read both OpenVPN and kernel logs
When the device still will not open, read the OpenVPN client or service log together with the kernel log at the same time the failure occurs. Use the log viewer provided by your distribution, or inspect the kernel messages with its standard tools. Look for a more specific denial, such as a rejected device open, a security-policy audit event, a namespace restriction, or a module insertion error. The exact service unit name and log command differ between distributions, so do not assume that one OpenVPN unit name applies everywhere.

8. Test traffic only after the interface opens
Once OpenVPN reports that the TUN or TAP interface was created, confirm that the interface receives an address and routes. If the tunnel connects but packets do not pass, move to firewall and routing checks. The OpenVPN FAQ specifically recommends tcpdump or Wireshark for observing network traffic. Capturing before the virtual interface opens cannot fix a kernel or device-node problem.
Fix the exact error message
modprobe: FATAL: Module tun not found
This means the module tree visible to the running kernel does not contain a loadable tun module, or TUN is built into the kernel and therefore has no separate module file. First compare uname -r with the kernel-module package and the directory of modules installed for that release. A common cause is booting an older kernel after installing modules for a newer one.

If the distribution’s kernel configuration says TUN is built in, loading it with modprobe is unnecessary; proceed to the device-node and permission checks. Never substitute a module copied from another release, architecture, or custom kernel build.
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'tun'
The module file was found, but the kernel rejected insertion. Capture the exact accompanying kernel error rather than relying on the short modprobe line. Check for a module built against a different kernel, a host security policy, a restricted namespace, or a virtual machine/container in which the host has not exposed TUN support.
On a managed server, ask the administrator whether module loading is allowed and whether TUN is enabled on the host. In a container, installing a package inside the container cannot create host kernel support; the host runtime must expose the device and the capability required by the OpenVPN process. In a virtual machine, verify the hypervisor and guest policy rather than repeatedly running modprobe.
Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/net/tun: No such file or directory
The path is missing in the process’s view of the filesystem. Recheck ls -l /dev/net/tun, then create the node with the documented mkdir, mknod, and permission commands from Step 5 if host policy permits it. If the commands succeed on the host but OpenVPN runs in a container or another namespace, the application may still have a different device view. The host administrator must expose the node inside that environment.

A missing node is a device exposure or device-management problem, not evidence that your certificates, username, or remote server address is wrong.
Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/net/tun: Permission denied or Operation not permitted
Here the path exists, but the OpenVPN process is not allowed to open it. Check the node’s owner and mode, the user or service account running OpenVPN, and any supplementary groups. Then inspect SELinux, AppArmor, or another mandatory-access-control policy for a denial at the time of the failure.
If the process is in a container or VM, also check device permissions and the environment’s network capabilities. Changing the mode to 0666 can distinguish a simple file-permission problem from a host-policy restriction, but it grants broad local access and should not be left in place without an explicit security decision. If a policy or runtime blocks the operation, only an administrator can change the relevant rule or expose the required device.
Options error: --server directive only makes sense with --dev tun or --dev tap
This is a configuration error, not a missing kernel module. Set the profile’s device to the interface type intended by the server, normally dev tun for a routed VPN or dev tap for a bridged design. Remove an incompatible dev-node or correct it to the actual device path. Resolve this parser error before investigating module loading because OpenVPN has not yet reached the point at which it opens TUN/TAP.

Make the device setup persistent and safe
A manually created node may disappear after a reboot, a device-directory rebuild, or a change in the container or VM lifecycle. Whether it persists is distribution- and environment-specific. Prefer the operating system’s normal device-management mechanism or the package’s service setup when available. There is no single persistence command that is correct for every Linux distribution.

- the kernel release shown by
uname -r; - whether TUN is a loadable module or built into the kernel;
- the node path and its intended owner and mode;
- the OpenVPN service account and its security policy;
- whether OpenVPN runs directly on the host, in a container, or in a virtual machine.
Recheck the node after rebooting and after restarting the service. A one-time mknod command is not proof that the host has a durable device-management configuration.
Containers and virtual machines need host support
Kernel modules belong to the host kernel. A container cannot load a module that the host has not made available, and a guest cannot assume that a hypervisor will expose every host device. If modprobe tun fails only inside a container or VM, compare the result with a host-level check and ask the administrator to verify TUN support on the host.
The administrator may need to expose /dev/net/tun, permit the OpenVPN process to open a character device, and grant the network capability required by the runtime. The exact setting depends on the container engine, orchestration platform, hypervisor, and security profile. Do not apply a host-specific flag copied from an unrelated environment without checking what privilege it grants.
Namespace differences also explain an apparent contradiction in which the host shows a valid node but OpenVPN reports “No such file or directory.” The application is reporting what it can see inside its own filesystem and device namespace, not necessarily what exists on the host.
Separate tunnel creation from firewall troubleshooting
OpenVPN has to open TUN/TAP before routing and firewall rules can carry VPN traffic. Once the log confirms that the virtual interface exists, check the interface address, routes, forwarding policy, and firewall rules on both ends. A tunnel that connects but carries no traffic can result from blocked UDP or TCP transport, missing forwarding or NAT, an incorrect route, or a host firewall rule.
Use a packet capture to locate the break:
- Capture on the physical interface to see whether encrypted OpenVPN packets arrive or leave.
- Capture on the TUN or TAP interface to see whether decrypted VPN packets are generated.
- Compare the two captures with the OpenVPN log and route table.
tcpdump and Wireshark can show whether packets disappear before encryption, inside the tunnel, or after decryption. Do not keep changing /dev/net/tun permissions once the interface is demonstrably open; move to the firewall or routing layer instead.

Final verification checklist
Before declaring the issue fixed, verify each layer rather than relying on a single successful command:
uname -ridentifies the kernel for which you checked modules.lsmod,modinfo, or the kernel configuration confirms that TUN support is available.ls -l /dev/net/tunshows the expected character device inside the environment where OpenVPN runs.- The OpenVPN account can open the node under the system’s security policy.
- The profile’s
dev tunordev tap, optional--dev-type, and optional--dev-nodeagree with the intended setup. - The log confirms that the virtual interface was created before you investigate routes and firewalls.
- Packet capture confirms encrypted transport and, where appropriate, decrypted traffic on the virtual interface.
The practical rule is simple: fix the lowest failing layer first. A missing kernel facility cannot be repaired in an OpenVPN profile, a missing device node cannot be repaired with certificates, and a firewall cannot explain an error that occurs before the TUN/TAP interface opens. OpenVPN 3 deployments may optionally use the ovpn-dco kernel module, but the classic TUN/TAP path remains the relevant prerequisite for the modprobe tun and /dev/net/tun errors described here.
