A Minecraft strider is not tamed in the permanent, owner-bound sense used for wolves. “Taming” a strider means saddling it and controlling it with a warped fungus on a stick. Find one on a Nether lava sea, approach with a safe platform or Fire Resistance, place a saddle on it, mount, then hold the fungus-on-a-stick to steer and boost. The strider can walk across lava, but it does not make you fireproof: a fall, a bad dismount, or direct lava contact can still kill the rider.

This guide covers finding, saddling, controlling, breeding and protecting striders, plus the safest way to cross a lava lake and the advancement goals associated with them.

What a strider is and why it matters

The strider is a peaceful Nether mob designed for one specific problem: crossing vast lava lakes without building an entire bridge. It is fireproof and can walk on the surface of lava, carrying a mounted player above the dangerous liquid. That makes it one of the most useful ways to travel through open Nether terrain when a safe route around a lava sea is unavailable.

Minecraft gameplay developer Brandon Pearce described the strider as “the only non-aggressive mob in the Nether.” He also explained the design goal directly: “I think it was because we wanted something that allowed you to traverse the Nether – specifically lava lakes.” The mob’s unusual behavior follows that purpose: it is comfortable in lava, can be attracted with warped fungus, and becomes visibly cold when taken onto land.

The strider is a transport tool, not portable fire protection. Its body can cross lava safely, while the player remains vulnerable to lava, falls, hostile mobs and an unsafe landing. Treat the mount as a way to move over lava, not as a substitute for Fire Resistance or careful route planning.

Does Minecraft let you permanently tame a strider?

No permanent ownership state is established for striders. You cannot create a wolf-style bond that makes one yours forever. In practical terms, “taming” means completing two actions:

  • Saddle the strider so it becomes rideable.
  • Use a warped fungus on a stick while mounted to direct it and provide a boost.

A saddled strider remains a usable mount while you are riding it, but the saddle is equipment rather than proof of ownership. If you leave the area, lose the mount or fail to secure it, do not assume that the game has assigned it to you permanently.

Where to find a strider

Search the exposed surface of lava seas and lava lakes in the Nether. Striders are easiest to spot from a shore, ledge or temporary platform because their bodies contrast with the lava and they tend to remain on its surface. Do not sprint directly toward one across an open lake unless you already have a recovery plan.

Use warped fungus to draw one closer

Hold warped fungus while approaching. It attracts striders at short range, allowing you to guide one toward a safer edge or platform before attempting to saddle it. Keep the fungus in your hotbar even after you locate a mount; it is useful for positioning the mob before and after the ride.

Make the approach survivable

Build a short bridge, ledge or landing platform from a safe shore before interacting with the strider. A Fire Resistance potion is optional, but it is a sensible precaution when the only route to the mob runs beside or across dangerous lava. Fire Resistance protects the player during an accident; it does not remove the need to control the mount.

Choose a location with solid blocks nearby. You need somewhere safe to stand while saddling the strider and somewhere reachable to target when you dismount. A wide platform is better than a one-block ledge because it gives you room to recover if the strider turns or a hostile mob appears.

Equipment checklist

Item Purpose What to know
Saddle Makes the strider rideable. Saddles can come from loot, fishing, trading, or a strider that already has one, as listed in the advancement guide.
Warped fungus Attracts striders and feeds two of them for breeding. Hold it while approaching so a nearby strider follows toward a safer position.
Warped fungus on a stick Directs a mounted strider and provides a boost. Craft it from a fishing rod, including a damaged fishing rod, plus warped fungus.
Fire Resistance potion Optional player protection during the approach or an emergency. It is especially useful around large lava seas, but it does not make the strider easier to steer or replace a safe dismount.
Building blocks Creates a shore platform, approach path and destination landing area. Bring enough for both sides of the crossing; the destination platform is as important as the starting one.

How to saddle and ride a strider

  1. Locate the mob. Find a strider on a Nether lava lake or sea and identify a solid block where you can stand safely.
  2. Prepare the approach. Extend a platform or bridge toward the strider, or use Fire Resistance if the route requires working beside lava. Keep warped fungus selected or immediately available to lure the mob.
  3. Place the saddle. Use the saddle on the strider with your edition’s normal interact control. A successful interaction equips the mob for riding.
  4. Mount. Use the normal mount/interact control again. Once seated, the strider becomes your vehicle, but it will not be directed by ordinary walking input alone.
  5. Select the warped fungus on a stick. Hold the item while mounted. Face the direction you want to travel and use the item when you need a boost.
  6. Cross deliberately. Keep your view pointed toward the route and check the destination platform before committing to a long crossing. Avoid weaving close to lavafalls, hostile mobs or narrow edges.
  7. Set up the landing. Before dismounting, aim at a reachable solid block. Use the dismount control only when the target is clearly visible and large enough to stand on.

The official Minecraft explanation summarizes the basic setup as: “All you need is a saddle and a warped fungus on a stick, then giddyup – you have yourself a mount!” The saddle provides access to the ride; the fungus-on-a-stick is what turns that ride into controlled travel.

How to control and boost a mounted strider

Control comes from the warped fungus on a stick, not from the lure item by itself. Hold the stick while mounted, face the desired destination and use it to make the strider move and boost. The item lets you point the mount across the lake rather than hoping it wanders toward the opposite shore.

Keep the route simple. Long, straight crossings are easier to supervise than sharp turns around basalt, lavafalls or hostile mobs. If you need to change direction, do so early while there is still open lava around you. Turning at the edge of a lake leaves little room to correct a mistake.

Use the boost for meaningful gaps rather than repeatedly activating it without a route. Watch the destination while moving, and identify a broad solid surface before you begin the final approach. The safest ride is one that ends with the strider already aligned beside a platform, not one that requires a last-second turn.

Safe lava travel: what the strider protects and what it does not

The mount can cross lava; the rider can still die

Striders walk on lava’s surface and keep the rider above the liquid while the mount remains upright. That protection ends if you dismount into lava, fall from a ledge, are knocked away, or otherwise lose contact with the mount. Lava lakes also contain hazards around their edges, including drops, irregular shorelines and hostile mobs.

Never interpret “fireproof” as “the player is fireproof.” The strider’s immunity applies to the mob. Your own health, armor and status effects still determine what happens if you touch lava. Fire Resistance is the emergency layer that the mount cannot provide.

Build the destination before crossing

Place a landing platform on the opposite shore before beginning the crossing whenever possible. Make it wide enough for both you and the strider, and connect it to a route that does not immediately drop into another lava pocket. Looking at the platform while dismounting helps prevent the common failure in which the rider steps off directly into lava.

Use a controlled dismount

Aim at a reachable solid block before pressing the dismount or use control. This gives the game a clear safe location for the player and reduces the chance of stepping into the lake. If you cannot see a solid target, continue riding until one is available or create one from a safe position. Do not dismount merely because the strider has reached the approximate destination.

Account for hostile mobs and visibility

Open lava travel exposes you to threats that a bridge or enclosed tunnel might avoid. Scan the destination and the shoreline before committing. If visibility is poor, widen the landing area and shorten the crossing into smaller, recoverable stages. The strider solves the lava barrier; it does not solve every danger in the Nether.

Keeping a strider warm and out of danger

Striders are most comfortable in lava. When taken onto land, they turn purple and shiver. The official Minecraft article notes that players often make lava pools to keep them warm even though the game does not require such a pool mechanically for the mount to remain usable. The color and shaking are therefore warnings about its environment, not a taming status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Return the strider to lava when you are finished with a land-based setup, or keep a small protected lava pool near a base if you plan to use the same area repeatedly. Do not allow rain to reach it; keep the mob under cover whenever weather can affect the location. A covered pool or enclosed lava channel also reduces the chance that the mount wanders away while you prepare equipment.

Warmth does not make a route safe for the rider. A strider can be perfectly comfortable while you are one misplaced step from lava, so continue to use platforms, Fire Resistance and a deliberate dismount even when the mob is behaving normally.

Luring, breeding and raising striders

Luring with warped fungus

Hold warped fungus near a strider and it will approach when within range. Use this to bring a mob toward a shore, line up two adults for breeding or reposition a mount beside a landing platform. Because the attraction works only at short range, build your safe approach first and then bring the strider the final distance.

Breeding two adults

Feed warped fungus to two striders. The two adults enter love mode and produce a baby. Keep the adults in a protected area where they cannot wander into open lava or rain while you wait for the offspring to grow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Growth time and cooldown

A community reference records roughly 20 minutes for a baby to reach adulthood and roughly five minutes for the parents’ breeding cooldown. Those figures should be treated as approximate: Java and Bedrock behavior can differ, and updates can change mechanics. If a baby does not mature on the expected schedule, continue waiting and verify the behavior for your edition and version rather than assuming the breeding failed.

Warped fungus has two separate jobs here: it is the lure for positioning and the food used to trigger breeding. The warped fungus on a stick is the control item for a mounted adult; carrying one does not itself create ownership or start a breeding state.

Strider-related advancements

Advancement Requirement Practical method
This Boat Has Legs Ride and boost a strider with a warped fungus on a stick. Saddle a strider, mount it, select the fungus-on-a-stick and use the item to boost while riding.
Feels Like Home Ride a strider 50 blocks on lava in the Overworld. Use an Overworld lava route long enough to cover the documented 50-block distance, with a landing platform and player safety plan ready.

The 50-block distance is the explicit game figure associated with the second advancement. It is a goal condition, not a general measurement of strider performance.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The strider will not come closer. You are outside the short range at which warped fungus attracts it, or the approach is blocked. Move closer from a protected platform, keep warped fungus in hand and clear a safe line toward the shore.
You can sit on the strider but cannot direct it. You are holding ordinary food or warped fungus instead of the control item. Select the warped fungus on a stick while mounted, face the destination and use it to steer or boost.
The strider turns purple and shivers. It has been taken onto land and is away from lava. Move it back to lava or provide a protected lava pool. The appearance indicates cold conditions, not that the saddle has failed.
You fall into lava while getting off. No solid landing target was selected before dismounting. Ride beside a broad platform, aim at a reachable solid block and dismount only when the target is visible.
The approach is too dangerous to reach the mount. The strider is surrounded by open lava with no safe standing position. Build a bridge or shore platform first, and consider Fire Resistance for the approach and recovery plan.
The player takes damage even though the strider is on lava. The mount’s fireproofing does not transfer to its rider. Avoid direct lava contact, falls and hostile attacks; use Fire Resistance when the route warrants it.
A baby strider has not grown yet. Growth and parent cooldown take time, and reported timings are approximate across editions and versions. Wait longer and check the behavior for your current edition and update before concluding that breeding failed.
The strider is exposed during bad weather. It has been left in rain or outside a protected pool. Move it under cover and keep its resting area sheltered from rain.

Choosing a strider instead of a bridge or another mount

Striders are most valuable when lava itself is the obstacle. A bridge remains useful when you need a permanent, predictable route or when you cannot safely mount a mob. Other mounts can help on solid ground, but they do not replace a strider’s ability to walk over a lava lake. Use the following decision points rather than assuming one travel method is best everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Travel option Lava access Required setup Control and safety Best use
Strider Directly crosses the lava surface. Saddle, warped fungus on a stick and a safe approach. Steered with the stick; rider still needs a solid dismount target and may need Fire Resistance. Fast access across Nether lava seas without building the entire crossing first.
Bridge Crosses above lava if constructed safely. Building blocks, time and a route with guardrails or other fall protection. Predictable once built, but construction exposes the player and consumes materials. Permanent highways, repeat journeys and routes where a mount cannot be secured.
Boat Not a substitute for a lava-surface crossing. A boat and a suitable water route. Useful only where the environment supports boat travel; it does not solve an open lava lake. Water travel rather than Nether lava travel.
Land-based mount Cannot provide the strider’s lava-surface access. Its own saddle or control requirements. Often convenient on solid terrain, but the lava barrier still requires another solution. Overland travel before reaching the lava edge or after landing.

A practical route often combines methods: use a land route to reach the shore, a strider for the open lava section and a bridge or tunnel for the final approach to a dangerous destination. The safest choice is the one that leaves a clear landing surface and a recovery route.

A reliable strider crossing plan

  1. Scout both shores. Identify where you will start, where you will land and whether the destination has a usable solid platform.
  2. Stage supplies. Carry the saddle, warped fungus, fungus-on-a-stick, building blocks and optional Fire Resistance before approaching the lava.
  3. Secure the starting edge. Build enough floor to stand on without being pushed into lava while interacting with the mob.
  4. Position the strider. Hold warped fungus and draw it toward the starting side until the saddle can be placed safely.
  5. Mount and align. Equip the saddle, mount, select the fungus-on-a-stick and point toward the destination platform.
  6. Cross in a controlled line. Boost when useful, avoid unnecessary turns and keep the landing area in view.
  7. Stop before the edge. Approach the destination slowly enough that the strider is beside solid ground, not halfway beyond it.
  8. Dismount onto the block. Aim at the platform, use the dismount control and immediately move away from the lava edge.
  9. Secure the return route. Leave a visible platform or bridge so the next crossing does not require repeating the most dangerous approach.

This sequence separates the three risks that cause most failures: reaching the mob, crossing the lake and getting off safely. Solving each one before moving to the next is more reliable than improvising from the saddle.

Bottom line

To “tame” a Minecraft strider, saddle it and control it with a warped fungus on a stick. Find it on a Nether lava lake, lure it with warped fungus, protect your approach with a platform or Fire Resistance, and build a solid landing area before you ride. The strider can cross lava; only the mob is fireproof, so deliberate steering and a carefully aimed dismount remain essential.
