There is no single fix for Minecraft being stuck on a loading screen: the correct solution depends on whether the Launcher, Java Edition, Bedrock, a local world, or multiplayer is failing. Start by fully closing Minecraft, restarting your device and connection, signing back into your Microsoft account, and checking for updates. Do not uninstall the game or delete saved data until your worlds are backed up.
First, identify which loading screen is stuck
Use the symptom that best matches what you see:
- The Minecraft Launcher will not finish loading: focus on Windows app repair, Microsoft Store cache, and Gaming Services.
- Java Edition freezes after selecting Play: test without mods, shaders, custom JVM arguments, or a damaged installation profile.
- Minecraft for Windows/Bedrock freezes during startup: check account authentication, updates, add-ons, storage, and Windows gaming services.
- A local world will not open: test another world and disable recently added add-ons or resource packs.
- Joining a Realm, server, or friend never completes: test local play and check your network, versions, account, and service status.
If Minecraft has just installed a major update or is opening a very large world for the first time, give it a short, reasonable wait. If the application is clearly unresponsive or the screen never changes, continue below. Minecraft does not publish a universal loading timeout.

- Record any error code or message.
- Identify whether you are using Java Edition or Bedrock/Minecraft for Windows.
- Back up worlds where possible.
- Do not delete world folders, saved data, or console storage as a first test.
- Note whether every world fails or only one.
Fast fixes for every platform
1. Fully close Minecraft and restart
Close Minecraft rather than leaving it suspended. On Windows, also close the Minecraft Launcher, Xbox app, and Microsoft Store. If a window will not close, open Task Manager and end the frozen Minecraft or launcher process, then restart Windows. On a console or phone, force-close the game and restart the device.
Minecraft recommends signing out, shutting down or restarting the device, restarting the internet connection, and relaunching the game for crash and connection-related problems. See the official crash and lag guidance.

2. Restart your router or modem
This is especially useful if the loading screen appears during Microsoft account sign-in, Marketplace loading, Realm access, or server connection:
- Close Minecraft.
- Restart the router and modem.
- Wait until your connection returns.
- Restart the gaming device.
- Try Minecraft again.
Do not treat changing DNS, disabling IPv6, or opening firewall ports as guaranteed fixes. Those are advanced, case-specific steps.

An authentication problem can look like an endless loading screen. In the Launcher, open the account or gamertag menu in the upper-left, choose Log out, select Microsoft Login, and sign in again.
On Xbox, close Minecraft, press the Xbox button, open Profile & System, select the account, choose Sign Out, then sign in again. On PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, open Minecraft’s Settings > Account, choose Sign out of your Microsoft Account, then select Sign in for free! and follow the displayed-code instructions. On Windows, also sign out of the Microsoft Store and Xbox app, close both, and sign back in.

4. Install updates
Update the relevant software before making more invasive changes:

- Minecraft and the Minecraft Launcher.
- Xbox app and Microsoft Store on Windows.
- Windows, macOS, console system software, or mobile operating system.
- Graphics drivers on PC.
A version mismatch can prevent multiplayer connections. Confirm that you and the world, Realm, friend, or server are using the same edition and compatible version. Use Minecraft’s official platform update instructions.
5. Check storage and available memory
Free space on the disk, console, or phone and close other demanding applications. A nearly full device may fail to finish loading, while heat or low available memory can make mobile performance worse. Minecraft specifically identifies insufficient storage as a possible Bedrock problem; see its Bedrock error guidance.
More Java RAM is not automatically better. Excessive allocation can leave too little memory for Windows or other programs.
Fix the Minecraft Launcher or Bedrock on Windows
Repair the Launcher first
- Open Start and search for Minecraft Launcher.
- Right-click it and select App settings.
- Select Repair.
- Reopen the Launcher and test Minecraft.
If Repair fails, return to the same page and select Reset. Reset is more disruptive and may remove local preferences, so use it only after Repair. Current labels can vary slightly by Windows version; Minecraft documents these steps in its Launcher update troubleshooting guide.

Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
WSReset. - Select OK.
- Wait for the process to finish, then reopen the Launcher.
Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool
Xbox Gaming Services supports Minecraft Launcher and game updates on Windows. If the Launcher freezes, will not update, or Bedrock will not start, run the Gaming Services Repair Tool from the official Minecraft support instructions. Use the tool linked by Minecraft rather than downloading an unofficial repair utility. See Minecraft’s Launcher crash and freeze guide.
After each Windows fix, restart the Launcher and test before moving to the next one. Minecraft Launcher, Java Edition, and Minecraft for Windows are separate troubleshooting targets; repairing one does not necessarily repair the others.
Fix Java Edition stuck after Play
Disable mods, shaders, and custom settings
Temporarily test Java with no Forge, Fabric, Quilt, or other mod loader; no mods or shaders; default resource packs; and default JVM arguments. A mod or shader that worked before an update may no longer match the game version.
Create a clean Java installation
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open Installations.
- Select New installation.
- Give it a test name and choose the same game version as the affected world.
- Leave advanced settings at their defaults and launch it.
If the clean installation works, the original profile is likely affected by a mod, shader, resource pack, JVM argument, or other custom setting. Minecraft describes this diagnostic approach in its Java launch troubleshooting guide.
Check Java memory allocation cautiously
Only change memory when the symptoms suggest a Java memory problem. In the Launcher, open Java Edition > Installations, select the installation, choose More Options, and locate the JVM arguments. Back up the existing text first. If you see an argument such as -Xmx2G, Minecraft’s guidance gives -Xmx4G as an example for a system that can support it.

Minecraft says systems with 4 GB of RAM or less may be more stable with 2 GB allocated, while systems with 8 GB or more may be able to allocate more. It also advises keeping allocation to roughly half of total system RAM at most. Do not allocate all available memory. See the official Java memory instructions.
When only a world is stuck loading
Test a new temporary world and a different existing world:
- Every world fails: investigate the installation, account, updates, storage, device, or an outage.
- Only one world fails: suspect world-specific corruption, an add-on, resource pack, shader, or experimental feature.
If only one world is affected, disable recently added Bedrock add-ons or resource packs and test again. In Java, test without the world’s mods, shaders, or resource packs. Restore a known-good backup if available. Do not delete the affected world just to test an add-on. A launcher reinstall will not necessarily repair a damaged world.
If the world remains inaccessible, preserve the original save and contact Minecraft Support. Avoid undocumented cache or folder-deletion instructions unless you fully understand which edition’s data they affect.

If local worlds load but Joining world or Connecting to multiplayer game never completes, do not reinstall immediately. Work through these checks:

- Test a local world.
- Try a different server or Realm.
- Confirm Minecraft is updated and the edition/version matches.
- Sign out and back into the Microsoft account.
- Restart the router and device.
- Check Minecraft’s service troubleshooting guidance, including Xbox and PlayFab status.
- Ask the Realm owner or server administrator whether the service is online.
If only one Realm or server fails while other multiplayer and local play work, the problem may be on that service or host. An Xbox, PlayFab, Realm, or server outage cannot be fixed by reinstalling files locally.

Platform-specific notes
Windows 10/11
Use this order: restart; sign out and in; update Launcher, Xbox, Store, and Windows; repair or reset the Launcher; run WSReset; run Gaming Services Repair Tool; then test Java clean or Bedrock without add-ons.
macOS and Linux
Use the Java path: restart, update the Launcher and operating system, disable mods and shaders, create a clean installation, check conservative JVM memory allocation, and update graphics drivers where applicable. Windows Store, WSReset, and Gaming Services steps do not apply to these platforms. Minecraft’s Java system requirements state that continued Java updates and online play require at least Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 as of March 2025.
Xbox
Fully quit Minecraft, restart the console, sign out and back into the Xbox profile, install updates, and test local play separately from Realm or server access. Check Xbox service status when sign-in or multiplayer is stuck.
PlayStation and Nintendo Switch
Close the game completely, restart the console, update both the system and Minecraft, and sign out and back into the Microsoft account inside Minecraft. Do not delete saved data without a confirmed backup. Nintendo also provides general Switch troubleshooting.
Android and iOS
Force-close Minecraft, restart the device, free storage, update the app, sign out and back in, and disable recently added add-ons or resource packs. Reinstall only after verifying that worlds and purchases are backed up or recoverable. Minecraft’s update instructions cover supported platforms.
Reinstall only after backing up
Reinstalling is a later step, not a universal solution. Before uninstalling, back up Java and Bedrock worlds using the applicable method, record the game version, note installed mods or add-ons, save screenshots of errors, and confirm that you are signing into the account that owns the game.
A reinstall may not fix an outage, account problem, server issue, damaged world, Windows Gaming Services failure, or an incompatible mod that you install again. On Windows, obtain the Launcher through the official Minecraft download page or Microsoft Store.
