Most PS5 4K and HDR problems are caused by the HDMI chain rather than the console alone. Start by connecting the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor with the included HDMI cable, then verify the display’s HDMI port, input mode, firmware and PS5 video settings. Add soundbars, receivers, switches and capture devices back only after the direct connection works.
Quick-fix checklist
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor.
- Use the HDMI cable included with the console, or a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120 Hz.
- Select the correct TV input and its enhanced or highest-bandwidth HDMI port.
- Update the TV or monitor firmware.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic; test 2160p manually if necessary.
- Set HDR to On When Supported.
- Set Video Transfer Rate to Automatic.
- Disable 120 Hz Output and VRR temporarily if the screen goes black.
- Set Video Transfer Rate to -1, then -2, if the image flickers.
Sony’s PS5 4K troubleshooting guide covers the console’s resolution, HDR, VRR, 120 Hz and HDMI output requirements.

Identify the symptom first
| Symptom | Likely areas to investigate |
|---|---|
| 1080p instead of 2160p | Wrong HDMI port, cable, TV setting, intermediary device or display limitation |
| HDR is unavailable | Display limitation, disabled HDR input mode, unsupported signal path or PS5 setting |
| HDR looks gray, dim or too dark | TV picture mode, HDR calibration, RGB-range mismatch or game-specific HDR behavior |
| Black screen at 4K/120 Hz | TV firmware, port, cable, receiver, soundbar, capture device or 120 Hz compatibility |
| Flicker or intermittent blackouts | Marginal HDMI link, high-bandwidth mode, cable, port, VRR, 120 Hz or intermediary equipment |
| 4K works but HDR does not | TV input mode, unsupported pass-through, disabled HDR or an SDR-only game/app |
| Cropped picture or black borders | TV overscan, aspect-ratio settings or PS5 display-area settings |
These symptoms are clues, not proof that a particular component has failed.
Check what the PS5 is actually outputting
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Record the displayed information about the connected HDMI device, including resolution, HDR and VRR status, before changing settings. This separates a console configuration problem from a display or connection problem.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Use these baseline settings:
- Resolution: Automatic. Test 2160p manually if Automatic negotiates incorrectly.
- 120 Hz Output: Automatic for a compatible display; turn it off during diagnosis of black screens.
- VRR: Off initially; re-enable it after stable 4K/HDR output is established.
- Video Transfer Rate: Automatic initially.
- HDR: On When Supported.
- RGB Range: Automatic unless the display is demonstrably reporting or handling the range incorrectly.
- Deep Color Output: Enabled unless it causes a specific compatibility failure.
Fix a PS5 that outputs 1080p instead of 4K
- Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic. If that fails, test 2160p.
- Confirm that the TV or monitor is actually 4K-capable at the selected refresh rate.
- Move the cable to the display’s port marked for enhanced, 4K/120 Hz or HDMI 2.1 operation.
- Remove receivers, soundbars, switches, splitters, capture cards, extenders and wall plates.
- Reseat the cable and test the included cable or another known-good cable.
A 4K display does not necessarily support 4K at 120 Hz, HDR, VRR, 4:4:4 chroma and every other feature simultaneously. Check the exact display model’s manual: HDMI ports can have different capabilities even on the same TV.
Fix missing HDR
Check three separate things:
- Display support: the TV or monitor must support HDR.
- Input configuration: HDR may need to be enabled separately for the selected HDMI input.
- Content support: the current game or app must output HDR.
TV manufacturers use different names for the required input mode, including Enhanced Format, Input Signal Plus, HDMI Deep Color and Ultra HD Deep Color. Enable the equivalent mode for the port connected to the PS5.
On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR and select On When Supported. Then choose Adjust HDR and complete the calibration. Sony’s HDR setup guide explains these controls.
Always On converts SDR games and apps to HDR output. It does not mean that the content is native HDR. For normal troubleshooting, On When Supported makes the distinction clearer.
Fix flicker, sparkles and intermittent black screens
First replace or reseat the cable, try another compatible HDMI port and bypass every intermediary device. Then temporarily disable 120 Hz Output and VRR. Establish stable 4K/60 Hz HDR before re-enabling VRR and 120 Hz separately.

If flickering continues, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and test -1, followed by -2 if needed. These settings reduce transfer demands; they are compatibility workarounds, not image-quality upgrades. Sony documents that they limit 4K/120 Hz and reduce some 4K/50/60 Hz RGB/YUV444 Deep Color output. HDR at 50/60 Hz may use YUV422 or YUV420 under these settings. A successful -1 or -2 test points to a marginal high-bandwidth path, but does not identify the exact failing component.
When 4K/120 Hz fails but 4K/60 Hz works
This usually means the display, port, cable or intermediary can handle 4K but not the complete 4K/120 Hz signal. Confirm all of the following:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- The exact TV or monitor model supports 4K/120 Hz.
- The connected HDMI port supports that mode.
- The display firmware is current.
- The cable is the included PS5 cable or a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
- The PS5 is connected directly to the display.
- Resolution is Automatic or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate is Automatic.
HDMI 2.1 branding alone does not guarantee that every port or feature combination works.
Fix washed-out, crushed or overly dark HDR
- Use the TV’s HDR picture mode for HDR content.
- Set PS5 RGB Range to Automatic.
- Check the TV’s black-level or HDMI range setting.
- Run Adjust HDR again after changing the TV’s HDR mode.
- Compare a known HDR game with an SDR game or the PS5 interface.
- Compare more than one game; HDR implementations vary by title.
Do not assume RGB Full is always correct. Sony advises changing RGB Range only when the HDMI device does not handle range information correctly. An incorrect match can produce gray blacks or crushed shadow detail.
Fix cropping and black borders
On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area. Also check the TV’s aspect-ratio and overscan settings.

Test soundbars, AV receivers and capture devices
Use this diagnostic connection:
PS5 → TV or monitor directly
Temporarily remove the AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter, capture card, extender, wall plate and video processor. If the direct connection works, reconnect one device at a time. The problem may be limited HDMI pass-through, an outdated firmware version, a Standard rather than Enhanced signal mode, an unsuitable cable, or a device that supports HDR but not 4K/120 Hz or VRR.
With an older receiver or soundbar, try:
PS5 → TV directly
TV eARC/ARC or optical output → soundbar or receiver
This can preserve video compatibility, although audio formats and latency depend on the TV and audio equipment. Sony also recommends direct source-to-TV connection when an intermediary cannot pass through the required enhanced 4K/HDR signal; see its receiver guidance.
Capture cards commonly support recording specifications that differ from their pass-through specifications. Verify support for the exact combination of 4K, HDR, 120 Hz and VRR rather than relying on a “4K capture” label.
Check the cable and HDMI port
Do not begin by buying an expensive cable. Reseat both ends, test the included PS5 cable and try another known-good cable. For 4K/120 Hz, use a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable; certification information is available from the HDMI Licensing Administrator.

A cable may work at 4K/60 Hz but fail at 4K/120 Hz. Cable length, construction, damaged connectors and marginal source or display ports can affect high-bandwidth stability. Replacing a cable cannot fix a TV port without the required capability, an incompatible receiver or a damaged PS5 HDMI port.
Power-cycle and update the equipment
For a persistent no-image problem, Sony recommends this sequence:
- Turn off the PS5 and TV or monitor completely.
- Disconnect their power cables.
- Wait 20 minutes.
- Reconnect power and restart the setup.
Also update the TV or monitor, receiver, soundbar and other HDMI equipment. The 20-minute interval is Sony’s published troubleshooting step, not a universal technical requirement, but it is the official procedure to follow for a stubborn HDMI handshake problem.

A visibly loose or damaged HDMI port is also a reason to seek service. Do not infer a failed HDMI retimer, port IC or motherboard component from symptoms alone. If the issue follows the PS5 across compatible displays, hardware becomes more likely; if another cable, port or direct connection fixes it, suspect that part of the signal path instead.
PS5 model note
Allow 8K Output and Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games are limited to PS5 consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. They are not universal PS5 settings and are unrelated to basic 4K/HDR troubleshooting.
What each successful fix tells you
- Direct connection works: suspect the receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter, capture device or its cables.
- Another cable works: suspect the original cable or its connectors.
- -1 or -2 stops flicker: suspect a marginal high-bandwidth connection or compatibility issue.
- Only one game looks wrong: investigate that game’s HDR implementation before blaming the console.
- The issue follows the PS5 to multiple displays: official hardware support is appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every PS5 support 4K and HDR?
All PS5 consoles support 4K and HDR capabilities, but the actual output depends on the display, HDMI port, cable, firmware and every intermediary device in the signal path.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do I need HDMI 2.1 for 4K?
Not necessarily. Older HDMI connections may support some 4K modes. HDMI 2.1-class capability is relevant to higher-bandwidth combinations such as 4K/120 Hz, VRR and certain HDR formats.
Should HDR be set to Always On?
Usually use On When Supported. Always On converts SDR games and apps to HDR output and does not prove that content is native HDR.
Should RGB Range be set to Full?
No universal setting is correct. Leave RGB Range on Automatic unless the display is demonstrably handling the range incorrectly, then match the TV’s black-level setting.
Can a soundbar prevent 4K/120 Hz?
Yes. Its HDMI pass-through may support HDR or 4K/60 Hz but not 4K/120 Hz or VRR. Test the PS5 directly on the TV.
