Minecraft TNT is made with five gunpowder and four sand blocks in the checkerboard TNT recipe. You can ignite it with flint and steel, a fire charge, redstone, a flaming arrow, a fire-aspect item, or another explosion. Once primed, TNT becomes a timed hazard: have a retreat route and cover ready before you trigger it.

A reliable TNT cannon combines a frame, a protected firing channel, propulsion TNT, and payload TNT. Water or blast-resistant blocks protect the launcher, while careful testing prevents self-destruction, wasted materials, lag, and damage to nearby builds. Java and Bedrock can behave differently, so check your edition and version before copying a design or rule.

TNT is a placeable explosive block. Ignition changes the placed block into primed TNT, which follows a fuse and then creates an explosion. The fuse gives you a short window to move away, but it is not a safety guarantee: nearby TNT can chain-react, and several explosions can destroy terrain, redstone, storage, and the launcher itself.
The Minecraft Wiki’s Tutorial:Using TNT gives the practical Survival instruction: “If in Survival mode, run as far from the TNT as possible!” Treat that as an in-game procedure, not as a promise that a particular distance is always safe. The result depends on the number of primed blocks, surrounding materials, terrain, and the edition’s explosion behavior.

TNT is useful for controlled excavation, traps, defensive mechanisms, minigames, and redstone experiments. It is also one of the fastest ways to lose a base or overload a world. The same tutorial warns, “Do not use excessive amounts of TNT.”
How to craft TNT
Ingredients
- 5 gunpowder
- 4 sand blocks
The recipe accepts ordinary sand and the other sand variants supported by your edition’s crafting system. Gather the ingredients before opening the crafting table so you can make the full recipe in one operation.
Crafting-table pattern
- Open a crafting table.
- Place gunpowder in all four corners and in the center slot.
- Place sand in the four remaining edge-center slots.
- Take the TNT from the result slot.
In a 3-by-3 view, the pattern is a checkerboard: gunpowder, sand, gunpowder on the first row; sand, gunpowder, sand on the second; and gunpowder, sand, gunpowder on the third. A partially filled pattern will not produce TNT.
Planning your stockpile
Every TNT block consumes five gunpowder and four sand. A cannon that uses separate propulsion and ammunition charges consumes TNT every time it fires, including test shots. Count both the launcher charge and the payload when estimating how much gunpowder to collect. Testing in a copied world lets you tune a design without repeatedly spending your Survival inventory.
Ways to ignite TNT
Ignition starts the fuse. Choose the method that fits the mechanism you are building and make the escape route before activating it.

| Ignition method | Typical use | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Flint and steel | Manual testing or a single placed block | Stand clear before using it; the TNT is primed immediately. |
| Fire charge | Manual ignition when a fire charge is available | Use it only after confirming that the blast area is clear. |
| Redstone signal | Remote triggers, traps, clocks, and cannons | Build a way to disable the circuit so it cannot fire while you are loading or repairing. |
| Flaming arrow | Ranged activation | Line up the shot from cover and account for misses or unintended fire. |
| Fire-aspect item | Close-range or experimental mechanisms | Do not stand beside the block while testing; the fuse still makes it a timed hazard. |
| Nearby explosion | Chain reactions and staged demolition | Chain reactions are difficult to control and can multiply damage and lag. |
Redstone is usually the easiest method to integrate into a repeatable machine because the player can trigger it from behind cover. It does not make the explosion harmless: a button, lever, pressure plate, or clock can still prime TNT while you are in the blast area. Put the control where you can see the chamber and retreat path, and include an off switch.

Safe TNT use in Survival
Prepare the area first
- Mark the intended blast zone and remove valuable blocks, animals, villagers, minecarts, and loose redstone from the test area.
- Provide a clear retreat path before placing or priming TNT. Do not rely on being able to sprint around an obstacle after ignition.
- Put solid blocks between the player and the blast. Cover is more dependable than trying to outrun a chain reaction.
- Test a cannon or large demolition in a copied world or a controlled area before using it near a base.
Control the number of primed blocks
One primed block is easier to predict than a cluster. Stacking many blocks and igniting them at once can produce enormous lag and, according to the Minecraft Wiki usage tutorial, may even crash the game. Large chain reactions also make it harder to recover if the first blast damages a redstone line or opens a path to additional TNT.
Keep an emergency plan
Before triggering a machine, know how to cut its redstone input and where you will stand. If the cannon misfires, do not run into the chamber to inspect it while other TNT may still be primed. Wait for the sequence to finish, then repair the frame and remove unexploded charges from a safe position.
What a TNT cannon needs
A TNT cannon uses one or more explosions to propel a payload. The core arrangement identified by the cannon guides is:
- Frame: the structure that holds the water, redstone, and TNT in a repeatable position.
- Protection: a water channel or blast-resistant construction around the firing area.
- Propulsion TNT: the charge whose explosion pushes the payload.
- Ammunition or payload TNT: the charge launched toward the target.
Water is especially useful in the firing channel because it can protect the cannon structure from the propellant’s explosion. Blast-resistant blocks can reinforce the chamber and walls. The Pearson sample Minecraft Redstone Essentials and Must-Do Projects describes the same functional components: a frame, water to keep the cannon from exploding, and TNT for propulsion and ammunition.

How to build and test a basic TNT cannon
The exact block layout varies by edition and design, but the construction sequence below applies to a conventional water-protected launcher. Use a copied world for the first build.
- Choose a test direction. Leave a long, empty runout in front of the muzzle. Keep the sides clear so you can see where the payload lands.
- Build the frame. Make a rigid channel that fixes the firing direction. Use materials you can replace easily, and reinforce the chamber with blast-resistant blocks where the propellant will detonate.
- Add the water protection. Place water in the firing channel so the propulsion explosion is contained rather than striking the frame directly. Confirm that the water stays in place when the cannon is loaded.
- Install the redstone trigger. Route the signal so it can ignite the propulsion charge and, where the design requires it, the payload in the intended sequence. Put the control behind cover and add a clear shutoff.
- Load the propulsion TNT. Place it in the protected firing chamber. Check that no redstone power is reaching it while you work.
- Load the payload TNT. Position the ammunition at the launch end of the channel. Keep the payload separate from the propulsion charge until the system is ready to test.
- Inspect the chamber. Verify the water, frame, trigger, and retreat route. Remove spare TNT from nearby storage and keep the player out of the blast line.
- Fire one test shot. Start with the smallest practical charge. Observe whether the payload exits, whether the frame survives, and whether the signal fires only the intended TNT.
- Change one variable at a time. Adjust charge size, payload position, or timing separately. Record where the payload lands and whether the launcher takes damage.
- Rebuild before scaling up. If the frame is damaged, repair it and identify the failure before adding more TNT. Never assume a larger charge will fix an alignment or timing problem.
Why the cannon destroys itself
Self-destruction usually means the firing chamber was not protected, water was missing or displaced, the frame used vulnerable blocks at the blast point, or the propulsion charge detonated outside the intended channel. A timing error can also cause the payload to explode inside the launcher instead of leaving the muzzle.
Check the cannon only after every primed TNT block has detonated. Then inspect the chamber in this order:
- Was water present in the exact area where the propulsion TNT exploded?
- Did a redstone line power a second charge unintentionally?
- Was the payload loaded too far back or blocked by a frame piece?
- Did the frame leave an exposed side for the blast to hit?
- Did the design rely on a Java or Bedrock behavior that is different in your edition?
Fix the underlying cause before trying another shot. Replacing the frame with more blocks while leaving the timing error unchanged only increases the amount of TNT lost per failure.

More propulsion does not produce unlimited range. The cannon tutorial notes diminishing returns as additional propellant is added. At some point, extra TNT adds cost, structural stress, and lag without giving a useful increase in distance or accuracy.

| Design goal | What to measure | Trade-off to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum range | Distance to the payload’s landing point over repeated shots | Higher charges can increase stress and resource use; diminishing returns make each added charge less valuable. |
| Accuracy | Spread between landing points | A slightly shorter but consistent shot is often more useful than a longer shot with a wide spread. |
| Large payload | Number and placement of payload TNT blocks | More payload raises damage potential and TNT cost, and can overload the launcher or create larger lag spikes. |
| Survivability | Whether the frame and water channel remain intact | Extra protection consumes building materials and space but reduces rebuilds. |
| Reload speed | Time and steps required between shots | Automatic loading can improve speed while adding redstone complexity and more failure points. |
For a practical launcher, compare range, accuracy, payload pattern, protection, TNT efficiency, reload complexity, and server impact together. A cannon that travels farther but destroys itself or takes several minutes to reload may be inferior to a shorter, repeatable design.

Do not copy a TNT cannon, command, or add-on mechanic across editions without testing it. Explosion timing, entity behavior, block destruction, and drops can differ between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, and they can change with version updates.
Bedrock explode component
Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation describes an explode component for entities and add-ons. Its settings include a configurable fuse_length range and destroy_affected_by_griefing. The latter means block destruction can depend on the world’s mob-griefing rule. If you are building an entity-based TNT system or using an add-on, check the component definition and the current Bedrock version rather than assuming that a Java TNT entity behaves the same way.
Java Edition explosion-drop gamerules
Java Edition 1.19.3 introduced three explosion-drop gamerules:
blockExplosionDropDecaymobExplosionDropDecaytntExplosionDropDecay
These rules affect how explosions handle drops. If a demolition project is intended to recover blocks, record the Java version and check the relevant gamerule settings before firing. A design tested under one setting may produce different drops under another. The rules concern drops; they do not make the blast itself safe for players or structures.

Version labels belong in your build notes
When sharing a cannon, label the edition, version, and any add-ons or gamerules it requires. Also note whether the design is intended for a local world or a multiplayer server. That information lets another player reproduce the test and helps explain why an otherwise identical layout behaves differently.
Server and world-impact precautions
Every primed TNT block is an entity that must be processed before and during its explosion. A large volley increases the amount of work the world must handle at once. The usage tutorial’s warning about severe lag and crashes is especially relevant on multiplayer servers, where one player’s test can interrupt everyone else’s session.
- Use a small number of charges while tuning.
- Warn other players before a large controlled blast.
- Keep test cannons away from spawn, farms, transport lines, and shared storage.
- Take a world backup before a demolition experiment.
- Remove unused loaded TNT from the machine when shutting it down.
If the game begins to stutter after a trigger, stop sending new redstone signals. Allow existing explosions to finish, then reduce the volley size and increase the time between shots. If a world or server crashes, restore the latest backup rather than repeatedly reconnecting to a machine that may still be priming charges.
A complete pre-fire checklist
- The TNT recipe and required number of charges have been confirmed.
- The cannon is identified as Java or Bedrock and the version is recorded.
- Water or blast-resistant protection is present in the firing chamber.
- Propulsion TNT and payload TNT are in the intended positions.
- The redstone trigger has a visible off switch.
- The player is behind cover with a clear retreat path.
- The target area contains no valuables or players who have not agreed to the test.
- The first shot uses a conservative charge.
- A copied world or backup exists for destructive experiments.
- No unnecessary TNT is primed nearby.
Choosing the right TNT approach
For one-time excavation
Use a small number of manually ignited charges, keep the player behind cover, and separate each blast rather than creating a chain reaction. This minimizes lag and makes the resulting terrain easier to inspect.
For a repeatable redstone machine
Build the protected frame first, then add a controllable redstone trigger and test one propulsion charge. Optimize for reliability and reload procedure before increasing payload or range.
For a long-range cannon
Measure landing points over multiple shots and compare the gain from each additional propulsion charge. Stop increasing the charge when range gains are small or the frame begins to fail. Accuracy, reload time, and TNT cost matter as much as maximum distance.
For multiplayer or shared worlds
Use a designated test area, agree on a firing schedule, and keep the volley small enough that the server remains responsive. Document the edition, version, gamerules, and add-ons so other players know exactly what they are testing.
