Its equivalent of traditional Java mods is primarily add-ons: resource packs and behavior packs that can change mobs, items, blocks, recipes, visuals, and more. Java Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge mods do not install into Minecraft for Windows.
This guide explains what Bedrock add-ons can do, where to find them, how to install and activate them, how to use them on existing worlds and Realms, and when Java Edition is the better choice.
Minecraft Windows 10 Edition is now Minecraft for Windows
“Minecraft Windows 10 Edition” is the older name for the Windows version of Bedrock Edition. The current launcher may show it as Minecraft for Windows. The PC package can include both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, but they remain separate games with different content systems.
Microsoft’s official comparison presents Java as the edition built around independent user-made mods, while Bedrock uses Marketplace content and add-ons. Therefore:

- MINECRAFT TOY FOR KIDS – LEGO Minecraft Zombie Dungeon (21587) building toy for boys and girls ages 8 years old and up
- 5 LEGO FIGURES – Builders can cast a Wastelands Wanderer minifigure, a slime and 3 zombies (including one with enchanted leggings and gold sword and one with diamond helmet) in their pretend play adventure stories
- GAMING-INSPIRED FUNCTIONS – Set in the Minecraft desert biome, this zombie dungeon features a rotating, zombie-spawning chamber and a sliding piece that triggers a rockfall
- INSPIRE CREATIVE STORYTELLING – The Wastelands Wanderer, equipped with a diamond pickaxe, mace and netherite armor, takes on a slime and 3 zombies in the desert biome dungeon
- ACCESSORIES FOR PRETEND PLAY – Features netherite armor, a mace, diamond pickaxe, gold sword, diamond helmet, crafting table, torch and a chest containing bread, bone and rotten flesh
- A Bedrock .mcpack or .mcaddon is not a Java mod.
- A Java .jar downloaded for Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge will not install into Minecraft for Windows.
- Tutorials showing a Java “mods” folder or a mod loader are for Java Edition.
For Bedrock, “mods” is still a useful search term, but add-ons is the technically accurate term.
What are Bedrock add-ons?
Bedrock add-ons are built from two main types of packs:
| Pack | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Resource pack | Textures, models, sounds, UI elements, animations, and other presentation features. |
| Behavior pack | Mob behavior, items, recipes, blocks, progression systems, and other gameplay logic. |
| Add-on | A packaged resource pack, behavior pack, or combination of both. |
Microsoft’s creator portal and Bedrock documentation describe resource and behavior packs as the foundation for changing mobs, blocks, items, and worlds.
Depending on the creator’s implementation and the current Bedrock version, add-ons can provide:
- New mobs, creatures, bosses, and altered mob behavior
- New weapons, tools, armor, items, and recipes
- Furniture, decorative blocks, building pieces, and new materials
- Vehicles and rideable entities
- Farming, automation, survival, and RPG mechanics
- New progression systems, adventures, maps, and minigames
- Texture, audio, animation, and user-interface changes
- Enhanced visuals, including some ray-tracing or Vibrant Visuals packs
They are not unrestricted Java code mods. Their capabilities depend on Bedrock’s pack formats, creator APIs, scripting support, version compatibility, and the individual creator’s implementation.
Choosing the right kind of Bedrock content
| Your goal | Look for |
|---|---|
| More challenging survival | Mob overhauls, new progression, survival mechanics, bosses, or exploration add-ons. |
| Better building | Furniture packs, decorative blocks, building tools, architecture packs, or texture packs. |
| Automation and farming | Behavior packs adding machines, crops, recipes, storage, or production systems. |
| Adventure and RPG gameplay | Custom worlds, quests, dungeons, classes, weapons, enemies, and progression systems. |
| Visual improvements | Resource packs, texture packs, animation packs, Vibrant Visuals packs, or compatible RTX packs. |
| Small quality-of-life changes | UI, accessibility, inventory, sound, display, and interface packs. |
| Multiplayer content | Add-ons whose documentation specifically confirms multiplayer or Realm support. |
Avoid choosing solely from a screenshot or title. Check the pack’s supported Minecraft version, update date, installation notes, required experiments, dependencies, multiplayer limitations, and comments.

Where to get Minecraft Bedrock add-ons
Official Minecraft Marketplace
The Marketplace is the simplest option for most players. It is built into Bedrock and distributes add-ons, maps, skin packs, texture packs, and other content through Minecraft’s in-game store.
It is a good choice when you want:
- In-game discovery and installation
- A more controlled purchasing environment
- Content designed for ordinary Bedrock worlds
- Convenient use across supported Bedrock devices
- A parent-friendly alternative to downloading files from random websites
Marketplace content may be free or paid. Purchases commonly use Minecoins; PlayStation uses Tokens instead. Availability, pricing, and platform compatibility vary by listing. Marketplace content is also not equivalent to unrestricted Java modding. Marketplace Pass provides access to a curated library, not every Marketplace item.

CurseForge’s Bedrock catalog is a useful source for free community add-ons. Its installation guide covers common Bedrock file formats and setup.
CurseForge is a third-party community platform, not the official Minecraft Marketplace. Before downloading, check:
- Whether the project supports your installed Bedrock version
- The last update date and download history
- Creator documentation and required dependencies
- Whether both a resource pack and behavior pack are included
- Comments reporting crashes, missing features, or multiplayer problems
- Download permissions and the identity of the file host
Be cautious with misleading download buttons, repackaged files, executable installers, and websites that ask for unrelated software. A normal Bedrock add-on is commonly delivered as an .mcpack, .mcaddon, or .mcworld file—not an executable program.
How to install an add-on on Minecraft for Windows
The easiest method: import the file
- Download the add-on from a source you trust.
- Check the file extension. .mcpack usually contains one resource or behavior pack; .mcaddon commonly bundles multiple packs; .mcworld is a world package that may already contain add-ons.
- Double-click the file, or right-click it and choose Open with Minecraft.
- Wait for Minecraft to report that the file was imported.
- Open Play.
- Create a new world, or select the pencil/edit icon beside an existing world.
- Under the Add-Ons section, open Resource Packs and/or Behavior Packs.
- Find the pack under Available and select Activate.
- Launch or create the world.
Importing is not the same as activating. A downloaded pack can be present in Minecraft but do nothing until it is enabled for a particular world. If an add-on includes both a resource pack and a behavior pack, activate both unless the creator says otherwise.

- GAMING-INSPIRED FUNCTIONS – The giant chicken-shaped coop lays eggs at the rear and dispenses seed from its mouth into a container, which tilts forward when the chickens need food
- CREATIVE STORYTELLING POSSIBILITIES – Young players can help the Chicken Fan care for the chickens while fending off a fox trying to eat the cold chicken and a baby zombie trying to hitch a ride
- ACCESSORIES FOR PRETEND PLAY – Features torches, hay, a smoker stove, 2 eggs, 2 lots of seeds, a chicken leg, feather and an axe
If the download is a ZIP file
Microsoft’s creator documentation explains that some downloads arrive as ZIP archives that need to be renamed to .mcpack or .mcworld. In File Explorer, enable View > Show > File name extensions before renaming.
Make sure you change the actual extension. A filename such as my-pack.mcpack.zip is still a ZIP file and will not import correctly. After renaming it, open the file with Minecraft.
Manual folder installation
Manual copying is mainly useful for creators and advanced troubleshooting. For current main-release Bedrock installations, Microsoft documents the following path:
%appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojang
Relevant folders include:
behavior_packs
resource_packs
development_behavior_packs
development_resource_packs
minecraftWorlds
Development folders are intended for testing packs under construction. Preview builds may use a different location. Back up the minecraftWorlds folder before changing installations or experimenting with content.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Adding an add-on to an existing world
For a normal local world:
- Open Play.
- Select the world’s pencil/edit icon.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Find the imported pack under Available.
- Select Activate.
- Return to the world and select Play.
Test substantial behavior packs on a copy of your world first. Packs can change recipes, entities, terrain, progression, or saved data in ways that may not be completely reversible. Keep a clean backup of valuable survival worlds.
Using add-ons on a Realm
To configure an add-on-enabled Realm:
- Open Play.
- Select Realms.
- Choose the Realm and open its Settings.
- Select the relevant world slot.
- Choose Edit World.
- Open Resource Packs or Behavior Packs.
- Activate eligible packs from My Packs or supported Marketplace Pass content.
- Confirm the change and return to the Realm.
- Wait for the world to upload before joining.
Players joining a Bedrock Realm should automatically download and apply the add-ons active on that Realm. However, “works on Bedrock” does not guarantee that every community add-on works correctly on Realms. Check the creator’s multiplayer and Realm notes first. A pack that works in single-player may have multiplayer limitations.

Do you need to enable Experiments?
Only enable experiments when the add-on’s documentation requires them. Depending on the version and pack, the world’s Experiments section may include options such as:
- Holiday Creator Features
- Upcoming Creator Features
- Beta APIs
Do not turn on every experiment by default. Experimental features can affect stability, compatibility, or achievement availability, depending on the version and feature. Read the creator’s instructions and enable only the specifically required options.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Shaders, RTX, and Vibrant Visuals are not the same thing
Bedrock visual packs vary considerably:
- Texture or resource packs replace or enhance textures, sounds, models, UI elements, or materials.
- Ray-tracing packs are designed for compatible DXR-capable hardware and a supported rendering mode.
- Vibrant Visuals packs target Bedrock’s newer visual system and are not automatically interchangeable with RTX packs.
Minecraft describes ray tracing on Bedrock as requiring a compatible DXR-capable GPU. Individual packs can impose stricter requirements. For example, the Vanilla RTX project lists supported Windows hardware such as NVIDIA RTX 20-series or newer, AMD RX 6000-series or newer, and Intel Arc A380 or better, while also offering a non-ray-tracing Vibrant Visuals version for unsupported hardware. Those are that project’s requirements, not universal Minecraft requirements.
Expect possible performance loss at high resolutions or render distances. A visual pack may conflict with another resource pack, and a pack designed for one rendering mode may not work correctly in another. Do not call every Bedrock shader “RTX.” Follow the pack’s activation instructions and enter the world only after the required visual mode is enabled.

The add-on imported but does nothing
- Confirm that it is activated in the specific world you launched.
- Activate both the resource and behavior packs if both were supplied.
- Check that the pack supports your installed Bedrock version.
- Enable only the experiments the creator requires.
- Check dependencies and pack load order.
- Verify that the file was imported rather than merely downloaded.
- Read the creator’s notes for world-type, multiplayer, or Realm restrictions.
The pack is not listed under Available
Close and reopen Minecraft, then check whether the import completed. Confirm that the file really ends in .mcpack or .mcaddon, not .zip. If Windows opens it in the wrong program, use Open with and select Minecraft. Re-download incomplete files.
Minecraft crashes or the world becomes unstable
- Test the pack in a new world.
- Disable recently added packs one at a time.
- Remove outdated packs after a major Minecraft update.
- Restore the world from a backup.
- Avoid enabling experiments that the pack does not require.
Microsoft recommends backing up the minecraftWorlds folder before installing a new build. For important worlds, a separate copy is safer than testing directly on the original.

Two packs conflict visually
Resource packs can replace the same textures, UI files, sounds, materials, or models. A behavior pack may also depend on a matching resource pack. Activating both packs does not guarantee that both will display correctly. Disable packs one at a time and check the creator’s recommended load order.
RTX or another visual pack will not load
Check the GPU, drivers, supported rendering mode, pack requirements, and whether another resource pack is overriding it. An RTX pack cannot make incompatible hardware ray-tracing capable, and a non-RTX pack should not be described as an RTX shader.
Achievements or multiplayer behavior changed
Do not assume achievements remain available after enabling experiments or particular add-ons. Check the warning shown in-game and the pack’s documentation. For multiplayer, confirm that all players are using compatible Bedrock environments and that the add-on supports the intended world type or Realm.
Bedrock add-ons versus Java mods
| What you want | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Cross-play with console or mobile friends | Bedrock |
| One-click curated content | Bedrock Marketplace |
| Free community add-ons | Bedrock or Java, depending on the project |
| Large technical overhaul modpacks | Java |
| Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge content | Java |
| Ray tracing on supported Windows hardware | Bedrock |
| Controller and touch support | Bedrock |
| Deep automation, magic, dimensions, or long-form modded progression | Java |
Choose Bedrock add-ons when you value easy setup, cross-platform multiplayer, Marketplace convenience, or Windows ray-tracing support. Choose Java Edition when your priority is the broadest traditional modding ecosystem, loader-based modpacks, and extensive code-level changes.

Creator tools for making your own add-ons
If installing packs is not enough, Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation points creators toward tools such as Visual Studio Code for editing JSON behavior and resource files. Blockbench is commonly used for custom models, entities, animations, and related assets. Creating an add-on requires more than editing a texture: you may need pack manifests, correct UUIDs, compatible formats, dependencies, and testing in a separate world.
Final recommendation
For Minecraft Windows 10 players, the practical path is clear: use Bedrock add-ons, not Java Forge or Fabric mods. Start with the Marketplace for the lowest-friction experience, or use a reputable community catalog such as CurseForge for free and more experimental content. Import the file, activate the correct packs in the target world, enable only required experiments, and back up important worlds before testing behavior changes.
If what you really want is a massive technical modpack, deep automation, custom dimensions, or the mature Java loader ecosystem, use Java Edition instead. Both editions are available in the PC package, but their modding systems are not interchangeable.
