The Copper Age is no longer an upcoming Minecraft update: Mojang released it on September 30, 2025, as Game Drop 3 of 2025. It is available in Java Edition 1.21.9 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.111. Update Minecraft to get the free features; there is no separate Copper Age expansion to buy.
What The Copper Age adds
The drop gives copper new uses in equipment, building, storage and item organization. Its main additions are copper gear and decorations, copper chests with sorting golems, and shelves.

You can make a copper golem that takes items from a copper chest and sorts them into nearby chests according to item type. The golem looks for a compatible chest when placing items; the exact pickup and placement behavior is documented in the Java Edition 1.21.9 release notes. Copper chests can oxidize over time or be waxed. Mojang describes copper golems as “handy, organization-loving companions that’ll bring your base to life!”
Copper equipment and decorations
Copper is an equipment tier, with tools, weapons, armor and horse armor. Minecraft’s official feature overview places its speed and durability between stone and iron, while the Java notes say copper tools are faster and last longer than stone tools. Copper gear does not oxidize. Check the Java or Bedrock release notes for edition-specific details rather than assuming every stat is identical.

For building, copper torches, bars, chains and lanterns add more oxidizing copper options. Java’s release notes give their recipes and functions. Java 1.21.9 also includes copper golem statues, mannequin entities, chat drafts, sound previews and other technical changes, so the headline feature list is not a complete account of that edition’s patch.
Shelves and redstone-powered item swapping
Shelves display and hold up to three item stacks. When connected and powered by redstone, they can swap multiple items with a player’s hotbar. Java’s notes specify that three connected shelves can swap the full hotbar.

Java and Bedrock availability
The Copper Age is available on both Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. The matching releases are Java 1.21.9 and Bedrock 1.21.111. Bedrock’s changelog confirms copper equipment, horse armor, chests and golems; consult that edition’s notes for its own implementation details. Do not assume a behavior or statistic confirmed for one edition applies unchanged to the other.
How to get The Copper Age
- Update Minecraft. The Copper Age features arrive with the latest version for your edition; no separate download or expansion purchase is required.
- For Java Edition, open the Minecraft Launcher and choose “Latest Release.” Mojang gives this route in the Java 1.21.9 release notes.
- For Bedrock Edition, install the latest available Minecraft update for your platform. The official Copper Age page directs players to update Minecraft.
Mojang’s game-drop timeline says new game-drop features are free. If you do not own Minecraft, you need the base game; The Copper Age itself is not sold separately.

The Copper Collection challenge was a past event
Mojang announced the Copper Collection community challenge on August 29, 2025. Its goal was to collect 50 million blocks of copper ore over four days, with a Bedrock Character Creator reward offered as part of the event. This was a historical campaign, not a current reward opportunity.
