Minecraft’s Herdcraft trailer promotes Mojang’s April Fools’ snapshot for Minecraft: Java Edition, published April 1, 2026. Its joke turns the inventory system inside out: items stay in the world beside you, and you direct them as a herd. Herdcraft is a snapshot, not a change to Minecraft’s standard release.
What is the Herdcraft update?
Mojang describes Herdcraft as an April Fools’ snapshot available only for Minecraft: Java Edition. The official update article, “The Herdcraft Update,” presents the idea with the line, “The inventory is gone, and it’s gone for good. Now, the world is your inventory.” That is the snapshot’s comic premise, not a promise that the regular game has permanently lost its inventory.
The trailer is listed as “Minecraft – Official Herdcraft April Fools Update Trailer” and dated April 1, 2026. The listing identifies the trailer; Mojang’s article is the source for the update’s features and installation guidance.
How does the inventory gag work?
Instead of carrying items in a conventional inventory, the player has blocks and items alongside them in the world. The update’s described commands make the collection act like a herd:

- Lay out a crafting grid on the ground and use it to craft.
- Order weapons to attack.
The central joke is that familiar inventory actions become instructions to objects gathered around the player.
How to access Herdcraft
Mojang’s instructions use the Minecraft Launcher. The snapshot is described as available for Java Edition, and the official article also says it can be played on Java Realms.

- Open the Minecraft Launcher.
- Go to Installations and enable snapshots.
- Select Latest Snapshot to launch the snapshot.
Protect your worlds and return to the release version
Mojang warns that snapshots can corrupt worlds. Its guidance is to back up your world and/or run the snapshot in a different folder from your main worlds. To return to the release version, select Latest Release in the launcher. Keep snapshot play separate from important saves if you want to reduce the risk to them.
