The Ghast is at the center of a poignant theory prompted by Minecraft’s Dried Ghast, Ghastling, and Happy Ghast: perhaps Ghasts are poorly suited to the hot, dry Nether, and their young need water to survive. That is an interpretation of reported game details, not a confirmed Mojang lore reveal.
What are the Dried Ghast, Ghastling, and Happy Ghast?
A March 25, 2025 article by ScreenRant, republished by Head Topics Germany, described a new sequence of Ghast forms. In that report, Dried Ghasts appear beneath fossils in the Soul Sand Valley and can be picked up like blocks. Placing one in water in the Overworld causes it to grow into a Ghastling and then a Happy Ghast.
The article described the grown Happy Ghast as a rideable flying mount that can carry up to four players. Those are reported mechanics from coverage of an announced update, not a guarantee of what is available in every current Minecraft version or on every platform. Check the release notes for your edition and platform before relying on them as gameplay instructions.
Why does the new Ghastling suggest a sad story?
The theory draws on details that can be observed or reported in the game: the Ghastling’s gill-like appearance, the Dried Ghast’s placement beneath fossils, and the reported need for water as it grows. Taken together, these details invite the idea that Ghasts may not be naturally adapted to the Nether’s harsh, dry environment.

From there, the more emotional speculation is that Ghastlings might need moisture—and that a parent’s tears could provide it. The source article connects that idea to the familiar crying appearance of Ghasts. But gills, water-related growth, fossils, and tears are clues for interpretation, not proof of a canonical Ghast life cycle or origin.
What does the “Uneasy Alliance” achievement actually say?
The ScreenRant article, as republished by Head Topics, quotes the Uneasy Alliance achievement description: “Rescue a Ghast from the Nether, bring it safely home to the Overworld… and then kill it.” The words “rescue” and “home” fit the theory’s emotional reading, but achievement phrasing does not establish that the Nether is not the Ghast’s natural home. The article also points to a claimed health contrast between happy and regular Ghasts; that contrast, too, is presented as part of its interpretation, not a confirmed explanation of the species’ lore.

Is there evidence the Nether was once frozen?
The article also mentions a separate fan theory that the Nether may once have been frozen, drawing on an ice-related basalt crafting recipe and the Happy Ghast’s interaction with snowballs. It further refers to speculation about Piglins and fire charges, the Mobestiary’s mechanical portrayal of Ghasts, and early development plans involving Ghasts near Overworld Nether portals.
These are ideas and details reported in the article, not verified evidence of canonical history. They may inspire theories about the Nether, but they do not confirm that the dimension was once frozen or that Ghasts originated elsewhere.
