Do not begin by downloading miner.dll. This file is associated with old Ufasoft Bitcoin Miner and Coin Miner software, and malware has also used Ufasoft-derived mining components. The safest repair depends on which program requested it and where the file was located.
Which fix applies to you
Use this decision list before changing anything:
- You never installed cryptocurrency-mining software: treat the alert as a possible malware-removal event. Scan Windows, remove the parent program, and inspect startup persistence.
- The error appeared after antivirus software removed a file: review Windows Security protection history, but do not restore the file unless you have verified its source and purpose.
- You deliberately installed old Ufasoft mining software: reinstall the complete matching application from its original source. Do not mix a standalone DLL with an executable from another release.
- The popup returns after every restart: a scheduled task, service, startup entry, shortcut, or leftover executable may still be calling the deleted DLL.
- The message names another Microsoft DLL as well: that separate dependency may require a Microsoft runtime or Windows repair.
miner.dllitself is not a Windows, DirectX, .NET, Visual C++, or driver component. - The program is legitimate but still fails after reinstalling: check whether the application and its DLLs have matching 32-bit or 64-bit architectures.
What miner.dll is and what it is not
miner.dll is a third-party application DLL historically associated with Ufasoft Bitcoin Miner and Coin Miner. Archived application information identifies it as a file used by coin-miner.exe, alongside other mining components.

That makes its location important. A DLL inside a deliberately installed application folder is a different situation from one found in %TEMP%, %AppData%, a random user directory, or beside a suspicious copy of dllhost.exe.
There is no reliable evidence that Microsoft ships miner.dll with Windows. It is not a normal file for C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64, and copying it into either directory is not a proper repair.
The executable shown in the error may be coin-miner.exe, dllhost.exe, Shell.exe, Macromedia.exe, or a malicious lookalike. The name alone is not proof that the process is legitimate.

Fix 1: Identify the caller and its full path
Before reinstalling anything, find out which program is requesting the file.
Check the error and Task Manager
- Write down the executable name shown in the popup.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Look for that executable.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- In File Explorer, right-click the executable, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures and Details tabs if they are present.
A known application folder is useful evidence. A temporary folder, randomly named directory, or executable with no trustworthy publisher is suspicious.
Check startup entries
- In Task Manager, select Startup apps.
- Look for the named executable or an entry with an unknown publisher.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location.
- Record the path before disabling it.
- Right-click the entry and choose Disable.
Disabling startup prevents the immediate popup but does not remove malware. Scan and investigate the associated file before deleting it.
Check antivirus history
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections involving
miner.dll,coin-miner.exe,dllhost.exe, or the folder shown in the alert.
If Windows Security quarantined a file, restoration is appropriate only when you have independently verified that it is safe and belongs to software you intentionally installed. Otherwise, leave it quarantined and continue with malware removal.

Fix 2: Remove an unwanted miner safely
If you did not install Ufasoft mining software, do not restore miner.dll merely to stop the message. The missing-file popup may be evidence that antivirus software removed part of an unwanted miner while a startup entry remains.
Run a full Windows Security scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Click Scan now.
- Remove or quarantine anything Windows identifies as unwanted.
- Restart the computer.
If the popup returns:
- Open Windows Security again.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan).
- Save your work and select Scan now.
The offline scan restarts Windows and checks before the normal desktop loads, which can help when a suspicious process protects or recreates itself.
Remove the associated program
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Sort by installation date if the problem began recently.
- Select the unknown or unwanted program.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and run another full scan.
Also inspect Task Scheduler:
- Press Windows key, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch from temporary folders, user profile folders, or unusual paths.
- Open a task and inspect its Actions tab.
- Disable or delete a task only after confirming that it belongs to the unwanted program.
Do not delete a scheduled task belonging to Windows or a trusted application just because its name is unfamiliar. Check the action path and publisher first.
If scans find an active compromise, disconnect the computer from sensitive networks, change important passwords from a clean device, preserve useful evidence, and consider professional incident response or a Windows reinstall.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall an intentional application
If you knowingly installed Ufasoft Coin Miner or another legitimate program that uses this DLL, repair the entire application rather than replacing one file.
Try Windows app repair
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the program that requested
miner.dll. - Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the program again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen, choose Uninstall, restart Windows, and reinstall the complete package from the original vendor or installation media.
Do not combine miner.dll from one release with coin-miner.exe from another. A matching application package supplies the correct supporting files and dependencies.

Older mining software may also have compatibility and security limitations. If the vendor identifies an old release as problematic, replacing one missing DLL does not resolve those issues.

A 32-bit executable needs compatible 32-bit application dependencies. A 64-bit executable needs compatible 64-bit dependencies. The fact that Windows itself is 64-bit does not mean every installed program is 64-bit.
Keep the DLL beside the application that loads it unless the program’s official installer specifies another location. The Windows loader normally searches the application directory before system directories. That is another reason copying a file into System32 can create conflicts or DLL hijacking risk.
Fix 4: Repair corrupted Windows components
SFC and DISM are useful when protected Windows files are damaged. They do not recreate a third-party Ufasoft DLL, so use them after scanning and repairing the application that actually owns miner.dll.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the affected program.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart, run Windows Update, and repeat the commands. If the error still names miner.dll, repair or reinstall the parent application rather than expecting SFC to supply it.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while the actual problem remains a deleted third-party file. Fix 5: Check drivers only when the evidence points there
miner.dll is not a device driver, so Device Manager is not normally the correct repair. Use it only if the same application also reports a hardware, graphics, storage, or chipset problem.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category named in the application error.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If Windows cannot find a driver, obtain it from the computer or device manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not expect a driver update to restore miner.dll.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and matching driver packages can mean guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale. Fix 6: Understand when other repairs do not apply
Visual C++ Redistributable
A Visual C++ package does not provide miner.dll. Install or repair a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the error separately names a runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. Match the package to the application and its architecture.
Windows Features
Turning on .NET Framework, Media Features, or another Windows feature will not normally create miner.dll.
To check optional features:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review only the feature named by the application’s documentation.
- Select it, choose OK, and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random features as a substitute for reinstalling the parent program.
regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 miner.dll
as a general missing-DLL fix. regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide the registration entry points required by COM or ActiveX components. A mining engine DLL is normally loaded by its application and is not globally registered.
Why random DLL downloads and System32 copying fail
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong release, the wrong architecture, or a file with missing dependencies. Even a clean file may not match the executable that requests it.
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and increase DLL hijacking risk. It also hides the real problem if a suspicious startup program is still running.

Use the original application’s installer, verified installation media, or a vendor-supported repair path. If Windows Security removed the file, restore it only after independently verifying its provenance.
If the popup returns after every reboot
A recurring alert usually means the caller still exists. Repeat these checks:
- Review Windows Security → Protection history.
- Inspect Task Manager → Startup apps.
- Check Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for suspicious services in Services.
- Search the executable name from the popup in File Explorer.
- Check shortcuts in the Startup folder by pressing Windows key + R, entering
shell:startup, and pressing Enter. - Run a full scan followed by Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Reboot and test again.
If the caller is legitimate, reinstall its complete package. If it is not legitimate, remove the parent program and persistence instead of restoring miner.dll.
FAQ
Is miner.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence indicates that Microsoft ships it as a Windows component. It is associated with third-party mining software.
Is every miner.dll malicious?
No. A legitimate old Ufasoft mining installation can contain it. Malware has also reused or bundled mining components, so the file path, requesting executable, and installation history matter.

That is unsafe and usually does not fix the underlying problem. Use the complete installer for the program that requires it.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when miner.dll exists?
The application may be unable to load a dependency required by miner.dll. The message does not always mean the named file itself is absent.
Should I use System Restore?
Use it only when the problem began after a known software or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists. System Restore rolls back system settings and installed software, not personal files.
What if I never installed a miner?
Treat the popup as suspicious. Leave quarantined files alone, run Windows Security scans, remove the unknown parent program, and inspect startup persistence before attempting any DLL repair.
