What this file actually does
mclmcrrt77.dll is a MathWorks MATLAB Compiler Runtime library. It is loaded by standalone applications built with MATLAB Compiler, including older scientific, engineering, research, and measurement programs.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The 77 identifies MCR 7.7. It does not identify Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or one particular application. The program that installed the file determines which MATLAB Runtime release and architecture it needs.

A 64-bit deployment uses the corresponding win64 directory when the application was built for 64-bit Windows. The exact location can differ when the developer included a private runtime folder with the application.

A newer MATLAB Runtime does not normally replace an older, version-specific runtime. Multiple MCR versions can remain installed on the same computer.
Causes matched to symptoms
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The error appeared after installing an old application | Matching MCR 7.7 was never installed | Run the MCR installer supplied with the application |
| The program worked before a Windows upgrade | PATH, compatibility, or prerequisite change | Check the runtime folder and restart Windows |
| The DLL exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found” | A dependency of the DLL is missing | Install the vendor-listed Visual C++ prerequisite |
| The application is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows | Wrong MCR architecture | Install the 32-bit runtime required by the application |
| Antivirus history mentions the DLL | Quarantine or security interference | Restore only the file from a trusted installer |
| Reinstalling the application changes nothing | The installer does not include MCR 7.7 | Obtain the separate runtime from the application developer |
| Several MATLAB Runtime folders are present | Side-by-side MCR installations | Keep them unless you have confirmed one is unused |
Fix 1: Install the matching MATLAB Runtime
This is the most likely solution.
- Close the failing application.
- Open its installation folder. Check for
MCRInstaller.exe, aMATLAB Runtimefolder, installation media, or areadme.txt. - Read the application documentation for the required MCR version. The filename points to MCR 7.7, but the application documentation remains the authority.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. Look in its readme, installer name, vendor instructions, or deployment documentation.
- Run the supplied runtime installer as administrator:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Show more options if necessary.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the licence terms.
- Keep the suggested destination unless the application documentation specifies another path.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit MCR, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing only a 64-bit runtime will not satisfy that application.
If the installer is not included, contact the application publisher or obtain the original installation media. MathWorks’ current MATLAB Runtime page explains current runtime installation, but it does not necessarily provide every historical MCR release as a direct download. Do not substitute a newer runtime merely because it is easier to obtain.

Check whether the runtime is present
In File Explorer, inspect paths resembling:
C:Program FilesMATLABMATLAB Compiler Runtimev77runtimewin64
or:
C:Program FilesMATLABMATLAB Compiler Runtimev77runtimewin32
If mclmcrrt77.dll is in the correct architecture folder, do not copy it elsewhere. Continue with the PATH check below.
Fix 2: Repair the MATLAB Runtime PATH
MathWorks identifies an incorrect PATH as a common cause. The runtime can be installed correctly while Windows still cannot find its directory.
- Press Windows, type
environment variables, and select Edit the system environment variables. - In System Properties, open the Advanced tab.
- Select Environment Variables.
- Under System variables, select
Path. - Select Edit.
- Select New.
- Add the runtime directory that contains the DLL, such as:
text
C:Program FilesMATLABMATLAB Compiler Runtimev77runtimewin32
Rank #2
Use win64 instead when the application requires the 64-bit runtime.
8. Select OK on each open dialog.
9. Restart Windows.
10. Try the application again.
Do not replace the entire PATH value. Add the runtime directory as a separate entry. If the application uses a private deployment folder, its own documentation may require that folder instead.
You can inspect the current PATH from Command Prompt:
echo %PATH%
This only shows the environment inherited by that Command Prompt. Open a new Command Prompt after changing PATH, or restart Windows before testing.
Fix 3: Install the required Visual C++ prerequisite
Some old MATLAB-compiled programs need a Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable in addition to MATLAB Runtime. FlowQuant and CTM4XAS documentation, for instance, identify an old Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable x86 dependency.
Use the application’s installer or documentation to identify the exact package. Do not assume the newest Visual C++ package automatically replaces every older runtime.
Rank #3
- Close the application.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Check whether the architecture named by the application is installed.
- If the vendor supplied a prerequisite installer, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the MATLAB-compiled application.
If the error changes from “mclmcrrt77.dll was not found” to “The specified module could not be found,” the named DLL may already be present while one of its dependencies is missing. That wording is a reason to investigate Visual C++ prerequisites rather than download another copy of the MATLAB DLL.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the parent application
The DLL belongs with the application’s MATLAB Runtime deployment, not with Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the original developer installer or trusted installation media.
- Confirm that the installer also installs MCR 7.7.
- Restart Windows again before launching the program.
For software managed by a launcher, use its Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair function instead of replacing individual files.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine the DLL or a related runtime file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
mclmcrrt77.dll, the application executable, or its runtime folder. - Verify that the file came from the original application installer.
- Restore it only when the installer and application are trusted.
- Reinstall the runtime if the file is damaged or the quarantine entry does not provide a clean restore.
- Add an exclusion only when the application vendor documents that requirement.
Do not restore an isolated DLL obtained from an unknown source. A missing file can be a symptom of a damaged or untrusted application package.

Fix 6: Confirm the application architecture
Windows being 64-bit does not prove that the application is 64-bit. Many older programs remain 32-bit and require the win32 MCR.
Check the application’s readme or vendor instructions first. You can also inspect the executable with a trusted development or deployment utility, but do not infer architecture from the presence of System32 or SysWOW64.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32normally contains native 64-bit Windows system files.SysWOW64supports 32-bit Windows components.
Neither folder is the correct general destination for mclmcrrt77.dll. Install the matching MCR and leave its DLL in the runtime directory.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall drivers only when the application points there
A graphics, instrument, USB, or device driver is not the usual cause of a missing MATLAB Runtime DLL. Consider this step only if the application also reports device initialization, graphics, or hardware errors.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and status.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver change, return to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when available.
- For a damaged vendor driver, select Uninstall Device, restart Windows, and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many driver versions: its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required for this DLL, and reinstalling the MATLAB application remains the definitive fix when the runtime is missing.
Fix 8: Use DISM and SFC only for wider Windows corruption
mclmcrrt77.dll is not normally a protected Windows system file, so SFC is unlikely to restore it. Use these commands when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, failed updates, or broader system-file errors.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components, not a missing application-specific MATLAB Runtime.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed: its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is handled by the full version. It is not required, and the application’s original MCR installer remains the correct repair for this file.

Why regsvr32 and DLL download sites are wrong fixes
Do not run:
regsvr32 mclmcrrt77.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. MATLAB Runtime libraries are loaded runtime components, not ordinary self-registering COM controls. The command may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found.
Also avoid downloading a standalone mclmcrrt77.dll. An isolated file can have the wrong MCR version, architecture, build, or dependencies, and it can conceal malware or a damaged application installation. Use the original application developer, installation media, or an authorized MathWorks runtime source instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is mclmcrrt77.dll a Windows file?
No. It is part of MATLAB Compiler Runtime and is used by applications built with MATLAB Compiler.
Will the latest MATLAB Runtime fix MCR 7.7?
Usually not. Compiled applications generally require the same runtime release used during compilation. Install the version specified by the application.
Can I copy the DLL into System32?
No. Keep it in the MCR runtime directory or the application’s private deployment directory. Copying it into a Windows system folder can create architecture and dependency problems.
Can several MATLAB Runtime versions coexist?
Yes. Older applications may require different releases. Do not delete other MCR folders merely because they look duplicated.
What if the original MCR installer is unavailable?
Contact the application publisher and ask for the matching MCR 7.7 installer or complete deployment package. The current MathWorks runtime page may not provide that historical release directly.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the DLL exists?
A dependency of mclmcrrt77.dll may be missing, commonly an application-specific Visual C++ runtime. Check the vendor’s prerequisites and the runtime architecture before replacing the DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I run System Restore?
Only when the error began after a significant system change and you have a suitable restore point. Reinstalling the correct MCR is the direct fix; System Restore cannot be expected to restore an application DLL that was never installed.
