For a small, single-node Tomcat and MongoDB deployment, use 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM as a practical starting point, with SSD or NVMe storage and a supported Linux system. This is an engineering estimate—not a minimum published by Apache or MongoDB, and not a guarantee that a particular workload will run well. Tomcat’s Java heap, MongoDB’s working set and indexes, traffic, backups, and the VPS CPU architecture all affect the size you need.

What VPS size should you start with?
For a development environment or a lightly used, single-node service, 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM is a reasonable first configuration to evaluate. It gives the operating system, Tomcat, and MongoDB more room to coexist than a very small VPS, but it should not be treated as a production guarantee. The appropriate size depends on what your application does and how much data MongoDB must keep readily available.

These figures are not a substitute for load testing or observing a live workload. A small application with a compact dataset may fit below a production tier, while a busy service or a database whose working set grows beyond available memory may need more resources. There is no evidence-based universal disk capacity, IOPS target, bandwidth figure, or plan price for this combination.

Why the application and database compete for VPS resources
RAM has to cover more than the Java heap
Tomcat runs on a Java runtime, and its heap is only one part of the machine’s memory use. The operating system, Java’s native memory and threads, MongoDB, monitoring processes, and any backup work also need room. Setting a large Java heap without leaving space for those other consumers can create memory pressure even when the heap setting itself appears reasonable.
Apache Tomcat’s memory page says, “if your computer has less than 128MB of ram – you will probably have trouble.” That is a broad warning, not a modern VPS sizing recommendation. Tomcat’s HowTo gives -Xms256m -Xmx256m as an example configuration and warns that physical RAM must also cover the operating system and application. Neither figure should be mistaken for a complete memory budget for a server that also runs MongoDB.
MongoDB needs memory for its data workload
MongoDB sizing depends in part on the dataset and indexes it must serve. When the relevant working set grows, a VPS with the same fixed RAM allocation has less room to keep database activity and the rest of the stack comfortable. The supplied official guidance does not establish a universal cache size or RAM-per-gigabyte-of-data rule, so use measurements from your own dataset rather than a fixed ratio.

CPU and disk affect more than peak traffic
CPU capacity matters for the concurrent work performed by Tomcat and MongoDB. Storage matters when the database reads or writes data and when backups run. SSD or NVMe-backed storage is a sensible starting preference, but the official pages cited here do not define a universal disk size or IOPS threshold. Measure latency under the workload you expect instead of assuming that a capacity label alone predicts database performance.
Check Tomcat’s Java requirement before choosing an image
The Apache Tomcat 11.0.26 README states: “Tomcat 11.0 requires Java 17 or later.” That requirement applies to Tomcat 11; confirm the supported Java runtime for the Tomcat major version you actually plan to run rather than assuming all Tomcat releases have the same requirement. A VPS can have adequate CPU and RAM yet still be unsuitable if its operating-system image or installed Java runtime does not meet the application’s requirements.
Set the heap deliberately
Choose Java heap limits in light of the total machine budget. -Xms sets the initial heap and -Xmx sets the maximum heap; they do not represent all memory used by the Java process. The example -Xms256m -Xmx256m in Tomcat’s HowTo illustrates syntax, not a recommended production setting for every application.

Configure the options through the startup environment used by your installation, commonly CATALINA_OPTS, and leave headroom for the operating system, Java native memory and threads, MongoDB, and supporting services. If you raise the heap to address application pressure, check whether enough memory remains for MongoDB and the OS. If you lower it, verify that the application still has enough heap for its actual behavior.
Verify MongoDB’s CPU architecture and operating-system support
VPS processor labels such as “2 vCPU” describe an allocation, not by themselves whether MongoDB can run on the underlying architecture. MongoDB 5.0 and later require supported x86_64 microarchitectures with AVX on applicable Intel and AMD systems. On arm64, the requirement is ARMv8.2-A or later. Check the provider’s actual CPU architecture and instruction support before provisioning; do not infer compatibility from the vCPU count alone.
Also select an operating system supported by the MongoDB version you intend to install. MongoDB’s platform guidance includes filesystem behavior: the filesystem must support fsync() on directories. These compatibility checks are separate from memory and storage sizing, and a larger VPS does not fix an unsupported CPU or OS.

Plan for swapping rather than treating it as extra RAM
MongoDB’s production notes say: “MongoDB performs best where swapping can be avoided or kept to a minimum.” They recommend Linux vm.swappiness of 1 or 0 depending on application and cluster needs. This is tuning guidance, not a substitute for enough physical memory: monitor memory pressure and size the machine so routine application and database activity does not depend on swapping.
Apply the setting appropriate to your Linux environment and operating requirements, then verify the value and observe the workload. A low swappiness setting does not ensure that memory is sufficient, nor does it eliminate the need to watch for pressure during traffic spikes, backups, or growth in the database working set.
Choose a VPS in a practical order
- Choose the software versions first. Identify the Tomcat major version, its supported Java runtime, the MongoDB release, and an operating system supported by that MongoDB release. For Tomcat 11, Java 17 or later is required.
- Confirm the CPU architecture. For MongoDB 5.0 or later, verify applicable x86_64 AVX support or, on arm64, ARMv8.2-A or newer. Confirm the provider’s details rather than relying only on the number of vCPUs.
- Start with the workload tier that matches your use. For a small single-node evaluation, 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM is a reasonable estimate. A small production service may call for 2–4 vCPU and 4–8 GB RAM, but validate it under representative traffic.
- Budget memory across the whole server. Set Tomcat’s heap intentionally and leave room for Java’s non-heap use, the operating system, MongoDB, monitoring, and backup activity. Do not assign all physical RAM to the Java heap.
- Select SSD or NVMe-backed storage. Estimate capacity from the data, indexes, logs, and backup needs of your deployment; no universal disk-size or IOPS minimum is established here. Measure storage latency with the workload you expect.
- Configure and observe the system. Monitor memory pressure, CPU use, application concurrency, database working-set and index behavior, and storage latency. Adjust compute and heap settings based on observed bottlenecks rather than a generic plan label.
- Plan operations separately. Backups, monitoring, firewalling, updates, and replica topology are operational requirements that the minimum compute estimate does not solve. Account for backup activity when evaluating memory, CPU, and storage.
Is 2 GB of RAM enough?
It may be possible to run a minimal test setup in 2 GB, but the available evidence does not establish that as a dependable minimum for a combined Tomcat-and-MongoDB VPS. Tomcat needs memory beyond its heap, MongoDB has its own workload-dependent needs, and the operating system also consumes RAM. A small Java heap alone does not demonstrate that the complete stack fits.

For a real deployment, regard 2 GB as a constrained configuration that must be validated against the actual application and dataset, not a safe general recommendation. If you are deciding without measurements, 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM is the more useful starting estimate; move up if monitoring shows memory pressure or workload bottlenecks.

When should you increase the VPS size or split the services?
Scale up when observation shows that the current machine cannot serve the workload comfortably. Relevant signals include sustained memory pressure, Tomcat needing a larger heap while MongoDB also needs room, increasing request concurrency, growth in database data or indexes, or storage latency that affects the workload. The sizing decision is about the combined system: raising only Java’s heap can make less memory available elsewhere.
For heavier production use, the estimate moves to 4 or more vCPU and 8 GB or more RAM, but that is still a starting point rather than a target guaranteed to work. Separating the application and database onto different nodes is worth considering when shared resources create contention or when the operational design calls for independent scaling. It adds infrastructure and operational considerations; the cited constraints do not establish a specific point at which every deployment must split.
What the minimum estimate does not include
A compute estimate is only one part of a reliable deployment. Before treating a VPS as production-ready, separately decide how backups will be made and restored, how the host and services will be monitored, how firewall rules and software updates will be handled, and whether the database topology meets your availability needs. The single-node starting point is not a recommendation for a particular replication or recovery design.
Likewise, do not assume the estimate establishes a required disk capacity, IOPS level, bandwidth allowance, or provider plan. Those depend on the amount and behavior of your data and traffic, and the cited official material does not specify universal values for them.
