mispace.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Storage Management Provider for Spaces. If mispace.dll is missing or cannot load, repair Windows and its Storage Spaces components rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What mispace.dll does
mispace.dll belongs to Windows Storage Spaces, the storage-management layer that handles storage pools, virtual disks, and related provider operations. Microsoft documents Storage Management Providers in the RootMicrosoftWindowsStorage namespace.

Windows commonly loads it through the smphost service. That is why Event Viewer may show entries such as svchost.exe_smphost, mispace.dll_unloaded, or exception code 0xc0000005.
It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, game file, or ordinary third-party application dependency. Microsoft update documentation lists it among Windows Storage Management Provider files, and current Windows 11 incident reports also show smphost referencing it.

Expected versions and locations
The normal location on 64-bit Windows is:
C:WindowsSystem32mispace.dll
Windows also has architecture-specific system components, so the correct file depends on the Windows build and whether the component is 32-bit or 64-bit.
| Build family | Architecture | Reported file size |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0.18362.1 | 64-bit | 3.49 MB |
| 10.0.14393.0 | 32-bit | 2.58 MB |
| 10.0.14393.0 | 64-bit | 3.09 MB |
| 10.0.10586.0 | 32-bit | 2.41 MB |
| 10.0.10586.0 | 64-bit | 2.95 MB |
| 6.3.9600.17031 | 32-bit | 0.98 MB |
These are reference fingerprints, not universal requirements. Do not reject a legitimate file only because its version or size differs.
To check your Windows edition and architecture:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
msinfo32and press Enter. - Check OS Name, Version, and System Type.
- Record the information before requesting support.
You can also open Settings → System → About and check System type and Windows specifications.

Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because mispace.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because mispace.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading mispace.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load mispace.dll.”
- Event Viewer:
Faulting module name: mispace.dll_unloaded
These messages do not all describe the same failure.
A missing-file message usually means Windows cannot find the expected component, or a protected component is damaged. An mispace.dll_unloaded entry can instead mean that the file exists but crashed while the Storage Spaces provider was running.
That distinction matters. Replacing a DLL will not fix a crash caused by a Windows servicing problem, incompatible storage software, a damaged component store, or a storage-provider defect.
Fix mispace.dll errors on Windows
Work through these repairs in order. Restart when a step asks you to, then check whether the original error returns.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →1. Install Windows updates and restart
Windows servicing is the safest way to restore a missing or mismatched system DLL. It also delivers fixes for the Storage Spaces provider itself.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional updates are offered.
If the problem began immediately after an update, open Update history and note the update date and KB number. Do not remove an update automatically. First install the newest available cumulative update, because later servicing may already contain a correction.
If Windows Update fails:
- Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Restart.
- Try Windows Update again.
A Windows 10 system may have fewer current servicing options because Microsoft support and free Windows Update security servicing ended on October 14, 2025. If the hardware supports it, upgrading to Windows 11 may be the appropriate long-term repair.

2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Use an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. It can appear stalled for several minutes. When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart after SFC reaches 100 percent.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: no protected-file corruption was found.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart into normal Windows and retry from an elevated Command Prompt.
Microsoft’s supported sequence is DISM first, followed by SFC. If SFC still reports unrepaired files, inspect the CBS log or continue to the recovery options below.
Repeating SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the affected Windows repair issues and show what it found; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional. Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the supported repair path.
3. Check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined the file
Security software can quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy. Do not restore a file solely because the filename is mispace.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Expand any detection related to
mispace.dll. - Review the detected path, threat name, and action.
- Leave the item quarantined if the path or signature is suspicious.
- Run a full scan.
If the quarantined file was in the Windows system directory and Windows Security identifies it as a false positive, establish its authenticity before restoring it. The safer approach is usually to update Windows and run DISM/SFC so Windows supplies a clean protected copy.
Never disable Defender just to copy a replacement DLL into System32.
4. Check the file path and signature
A legitimate filename does not prove that a file is legitimate. Malware can use the same name.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Look for
mispace.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if available.
- On the Details tab, look for Microsoft as the company and Storage Management Provider for Spaces as the description.
A file with the same name in a game folder, Downloads, Temp, or an unfamiliar application directory deserves extra caution. Do not overwrite the Windows copy with it.

5. Check Storage Spaces and storage drivers
If Event Viewer reports svchost.exe_smphost or mispace.dll_unloaded, inspect whether storage operations are failing.

- Open Settings → System → Storage → Advanced storage settings → Storage Spaces.
- Check whether Windows reports a storage pool or virtual disk problem.
- If you use Storage Spaces, confirm that the associated physical disks are connected and visible.
- Do not delete a pool, virtual disk, or storage space as a troubleshooting experiment.
Then inspect storage devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives and Storage controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under General and record the device name and driver date.
- Use Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a driver.
If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties → Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise obtain the driver from the PC, motherboard, or storage-device manufacturer.
Drivers can be difficult to match when several storage controllers are installed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the detected results; installation through the full version is optional, and the correct manufacturer driver remains the priority.
There is no normal Windows Features checkbox that repairs mispace.dll. Do not enable random optional features or install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET to address this Windows Storage Spaces component.
6. Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error started after a driver, update, or system-management utility was installed, System Restore can reverse that change without removing personal files.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if offered.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Click Scan for affected programs.
- Review the list.
- Click Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a backup and may not be available if protection was disabled. It also does not normally remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before confirming.
7. Use Windows recovery or repair reinstall
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, the component store or Windows installation may be more seriously damaged.
On Windows 11, try the repair reinstall when it is available:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to power until the process finishes.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported.
If that option is unavailable, review Settings → System → Recovery for supported reset and recovery choices. Back up important files first. A repair installation or reset is preferable to manually replacing protected system files.
What not to do
Do not download mispace.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL downloads can provide:
- Malware or modified code
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing dependencies
- A file that does not match Windows servicing metadata
Even a file that removes the popup may leave the underlying Storage Spaces or component-store problem untouched. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or Windows recovery instead.

Do not run:
regsvr32 mispace.dll
unless Microsoft support gives you a specific, build-matched instruction. Registering the file does not restore a missing protected component and may produce a misleading registration error.
Do not replace the file with a different architecture
A 32-bit and 64-bit DLL are not interchangeable. A file from another Windows release can also have incompatible dependencies. Let Windows servicing select the correct component.
If only Event Viewer reports the error
If the desktop works and no storage pool, virtual disk, or disk-management operation is failing, an isolated mispace.dll_unloaded event does not necessarily mean the file is missing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOpen Event Viewer and collect:
- Open Start and type Event Viewer.
- Select Windows Logs → Application.
- Find the event at the reported time.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code, and event ID.
- Also check Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows for related storage events.
Install pending Windows updates first. If the event continues, provide the complete event details rather than replacing the DLL. A provider crash can require a Windows-build-specific fix.

FAQ
Is mispace.dll safe?
It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component when it is in the expected Windows system directory and has appropriate Microsoft metadata and signature. The filename alone is not proof of authenticity.
Is mispace.dll part of Storage Spaces?
Yes. It is the Storage Management Provider for Spaces and is associated with the smphost storage-management service.
Does Windows 10 or Windows 11 use it?
Microsoft documentation lists the component in Windows Storage Management Provider files, and Windows 11 incident reports show smphost referencing it. Exact behavior varies by Windows build and enabled storage features.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Those runtimes are not the normal repair for a Windows Storage Spaces component. Repair Windows itself.
What if the file is missing but SFC cannot restore it?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If it still cannot repair the component, use System Restore or a supported Windows repair reinstall.
What if Defender quarantined it?
Review the detection and leave it quarantined unless authenticity is established. Repair Windows through updates and DISM/SFC rather than restoring an unverified copy.
Can I copy mispace.dll from another PC?
Do not do this as a routine fix. Windows build, architecture, dependencies, and servicing state must match, and manual copying can conceal the real problem.
