MLB The Show 24 is a polished baseball simulation with a broad selection of modes and a distinctive historical focus in Storylines. Its strongest reasons to choose it over an earlier annual edition are targeted additions—especially the women’s Road to the Show career and new Storylines—not a proven wholesale reinvention. If you already own MLB The Show 23, whether to upgrade depends on which of those additions matters to you.
What kind of baseball game is MLB The Show 24?
It is a multi-mode baseball game built around on-field play, with career, management, seasonal, history-focused, card-collection and multiplayer options. The official PlayStation Store listing describes Road to the Show, Franchise, March to October, Storylines, Diamond Dynasty and multiplayer. Nintendo’s announcement for the Switch edition also outlines platform features.

Road to the Show
Build a prospect and develop their career through training, equipment, perks and relationships. The 2024 edition adds a women’s career path, including a storyline alongside rival Mia Lewis, and a Draft Combine. The official manual says the Combine has three mini-games and that performance can affect draft position. San Diego Studio narrative designer Mollie Braley told Xbox Wire: “This feature was inspired by the stories of women in baseball. Throughout history, women have been making waves in the sport. These include legends such as Toni Stone, who was one of the first women ever to play professional baseball and has a new Storyline in MLB The Show 24.” Xbox Wire’s feature provides more detail.
Franchise and March to October
Franchise is the longer-running team-management option; March to October offers a more focused route through a season. If online Franchise is important to you, note that GameSpot reviewer Richard Wakeling listed its continued absence among the game’s weaknesses in his March 27, 2024 review. That is one reviewer’s criticism, not evidence that every player will find the mode lacking.

Storylines
Storylines turns baseball history into playable, video-supported chapters. The base game includes a Derek Jeter chapter and Negro Leagues Season 2. The latter features Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, Henry Aaron and Toni Stone; its chapters combine gameplay with historical material. PlayStation Blog described Negro Leagues Season 2 as a “playable micro-documentary” narrated by Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Its launch announcement said ten new legends would arrive across launch and later free content drops. The manual notes that future Storylines content requires internet downloads, and the announcement says an internet connection is needed for launch content and updates.
Diamond Dynasty
In Diamond Dynasty, collect player cards, assemble a fantasy roster and play online or offline. The 2024 materials describe seasonal and Core cards and multiple Wild Cards. Xbox Wire lists activities including Conquest, Ranked, Showdown, Mini Seasons and Battle Royale. The official store listing flags in-game purchases and random items, so players who prefer to avoid spending should take those disclosures into account.

Multiplayer and the pitch clock
Official launch materials list multiplayer and describe cross-platform play and cross-progression. Exact support can depend on console, mode, account linking and edition, so confirm the relevant details for your setup. The game manual says its pitch clock is enabled by default, with a 20-second limit when runners are on base and 15 seconds with the bases empty; it can be disabled in offline modes. Those figures describe the game’s settings, not a general statement of current MLB rules.
How good is the gameplay, and what did critics say?
Wakeling’s GameSpot review praised the baseball gameplay and Storylines, while criticizing the lack of online Franchise and describing Road to the Show as stale. The praise and criticisms are useful signals, but they represent one reviewer’s evaluation rather than a universal consensus.

Base the decision on the mode you actually play. The clearest specific reasons to consider this edition are the women’s Road to the Show career and the Derek Jeter and Negro Leagues Storylines. If historical baseball is a major draw, the playable, narrated format gives this edition a strong identity. If you mainly want an online Franchise, the cited review specifically notes that it is still absent. If you spend most of your time in Road to the Show, weigh the new career route and Combine against Wakeling’s view that the mode otherwise feels stale.

The available review evidence supports praise for the on-field baseball and these targeted additions, but does not establish how large a gameplay improvement this is over MLB The Show 23 for every player. If you are content with your current edition and do not want the new career or historical content, the case for an immediate upgrade is less compelling; if those features are priorities, they are concrete reasons to consider it.
Platforms and practical considerations
Official launch materials list PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch editions. Cross-platform play and cross-progression are described by PlayStation and Nintendo, but check the exact console, mode, edition and account-linking requirements before buying. Current price, retailer stock, subscription access and server status are not established here, so check those directly when making a purchase decision.
